    I need to show a list of movies ordered by the date they were registered in the system and the amount of comments users have made about them. E.g: Title | Register Date | # of comments Gladiator | 02-01-2010 | 30 Matrix | 01-02-2010 | 20 It is a web application that follows MVC. So, I have the object "Movie", there is a MovieManager interface that is used for retrieving/persisting data to the database and a servlet RecentlyAddedMovies.java that forwards to a .jsp to render the list. I will explain my problem by showing an example of how I am doing another similar task: Showing top ranked movies. Regarding the MovieManager: /** * Returns a collection of the x best-ranked movies * @param x the amount of movies to return * @return A collection of movies * @throws SQLException */ public Collection<Movie> getTopX(int x) throws SQLException; The servlet: public class Top5 extends HttpServlet{ @Override protected void doGet(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse resp) throws ServletException, IOException { MovieManager movManager = JDBCMovieManager.getInstance(); try { req.setAttribute("movies", movManager.getTopX(5)); } catch (SQLException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } req.getRequestDispatcher("listMovies.jsp").forward(req, resp); } } And the listMovies.jsp has is some place something like: <c:forEach var="movie" items="${movies}"> ... <c:out value="${movie.title}"/> ... </c:forEach> The difference between the top5 problem and the problem I am trying to solve is that with the top5 thing all the data I needed to show in the view where part of the "Movie" object, so the MovieManager simply returned a Collection of Movies. Now, the MovieManager must retrieve an ordered list of (Movie, # of comments). The Movie object has a collection of Comment associated but of course, it lacks an instance variable with the length of that collection. The following things came into my mind: a) Create a MovieView object or something like that, that is only used by the "View" and "Controller" layer of the MVC which is not part of the "Model" in the sense that is used only for easy retrieval and display of information. This MovieView object will have a title, registerDate and # of Comments so the thing would look something like this: /** * Returns a collection of the x most recently added movies * @param x the amount of movies to return * @return A collection of movies * @throws SQLException */ public Collection<Movie2> getXRecentlyAddedMovies(int x) throws SQLException; The .jsp: <c:forEach var="movie2" items="${movies2}"> ... <c:out value="${movie2.title}"/> <c:out value="${movie2.registerDate}"/> <c:out value="${movie2.noOfComments}"/> ... </c:forEach> b) Add to the Collection the movie has, empty Comments (there is no actual need to retrieve all the comment data from the database) so that the comment's collection.size() will show the number of comments that movie has. (This sounds horrible to me) c) Add to the "Movie" object an instance field noOfComments with the setter and getter that will help with this type of cases even if, looking only from the object point of view, it is a redundant field since it already has a Collection that is ".size()"able . d) Make the MovieManager retrieve some structure like a Map or a Collection of a two component array or something like that that will contain both a Movie object and the associated number of comments and with JSLT iterate over it and show it accordingly.

The article by Andrei Kouvchinnikov describes well how to fetch message list in notes mail folders; after obtaining session id during login one can for example select top 100 messages by calling: https://your.server.domain/mail_db/mailbox.nsf/($Inbox)?ReadViewEntries&Start=1&Count=100 And this works perfectly. The arises when I am trying to get message contents (0A1DA5EEB7B65277C12576F50055D811 is an example message unique Id): https://your.server.domain/mail_db/mailbox.nsf/($Inbox)/0A1DA5EEB7B65277C12576F50055D811/?OpenDocument Such request in IE shows frameset with data hard to parse, in less common browsers like Opera it informs about unsupported browser. Ideally if it is possible to fetch notes message contents and all attachments by requesting it in the url, has anybody some information what request would it be?     So my whole problem is that I have two files one with following format(for Python 2.6): #comments config = { #comments 'name': 'hello', 'see?': 'world':'ABC',CLASS=3 } This file has number of sections like this. Second file has format: [23] [config] 'name'='abc' 'see?'= [23] Now the requirement is that I need to compare both files and generate file as: #comments config = { #comments 'name': 'abc', 'see?': 'world':'ABC',CLASS=3 } So the result file will contain the values from the first file, unless the value for same attribute is there in second file, which will overwrite the value. Now my problem is how to manipulate these files using Python. Thanks in advance and for your previous answers in short time ,I need to use python 2.6

    hello, i'm storing XML values to an entry in my database. Originally, i extract the xml datatype to my business logic then fill the XML data into a DataSet. I want to improve this process by loading the XML right into the T-SQL. Instead of getting the xml as string then converting it on the BL. My issue is this: each xml entry is dynamic, meaning it can be any column created by the user.     I can't find any thorough explanation of the ivy dependency tag's conf attribute: <dependency org="hibernate" name="hibernate" rev="3.1.3" conf="runtime, standalone -> runtime(*)"/> See that conf attribute? I can't find any explanation (that I can understand) about the right hand side of the - symbol. PLEASE keep in mind I don't know the first thing about maven so please explain this attribute with that consideration.   • Calling webservice via server causes java.net.MalformedURLException: no protocol

    I am writing a web-service, which parses an xml file. In the client, I read the whole content of the xml into a String then I give it to the web-service. If I run my web-service with main as a Java-Application (for tests) there is no problem, no error messages.     I’m trying to design a database to use with ASP.net MVC application. Here is the scenario: There are three entities and users can post their comments for each of these different entities. I just wonder how just put one table for Comments and link all other entities to it. Obviously, Comments table needs 3 references (foreign key) to those tables but as you know these foreign keys can’t be null and just one of them can be filled for each row. Is there any better way than implementing three different tables for each entity’s comments? Cheers Ethan

Right now, this renders as a set of buttons. I'd like to render it as a table, with each row clickable in the same way (ie, using the 'post' method, so that only the haml file has to be edited without touching the rest of the files). Ideally, I'd also like to be able to sort the table by name, time, or comments, but that might be getting ahead of myself. So how can I change this list of buttons into a table with clickable rows?

    I have five tables in my database. Members, items, comments, votes and countries. I want to get 10 items. I want to get the count of comments and votes for each item. I also want the member that submitted each item, and the country they are from. After posting here and elsewhere, I started using subselects to get the counts, but this query is taking 10 seconds or more! SELECT `items_2`.*, (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM `comments` WHERE (comments.Script = items_2.Id) AND (comments.Active = 1)) AS `Comments`, (SELECT COUNT(votes.Member) FROM `votes` WHERE (votes.Script = items_2.Id) AND (votes.Active = 1)) AS `votes`, `countrys`.`Name` AS `Country` FROM `items` AS `items_2` INNER JOIN `members` ON items_2.Member=members.Id AND members.Active = 1 INNER JOIN `members` AS `members_2` ON items_2.Member=members.Id LEFT JOIN `countrys` ON countrys.Id = members.Country GROUP BY `items_2`.`Id` ORDER BY `Created` DESC LIMIT 10 My question is whether this is the right way to do this, if there's better way to write this statement OR if there's a whole different approach that will be better. Should I run the subselects separately and aggregate the information?

  • Encapsulate update method inside of object or have method which accepts an object to update

    Hi, I actually have 2 questions related to each other: I have an object (class) called, say MyClass which holds data from my database. Currently I have a list of these objects ( List < MyClass ) that resides in a singleton in a "communal area". I feel it's easier to manage the data this way and I fail to see how passing a class around from object to object is beneficial over a singleton (I would be happy if someone can tell me why). Anyway, the data may change in the database from outside my program and so I have to update the data every so often. To update the list of the MyClass I have a method called say, Update, written in another class which accepts a list of MyClass. This updates all the instances of MyClass in the list. However would it be better instead to encapulate the Update() method inside the MyClass object, so instead I would say foreach(MyClass obj in MyClassList) { obj.update(); } What is a better implementation and why? The update method requires a XML reader. I have written an XML reader class which is basically a wrapper over the standard XML reader the language natively provides which provides application specific data collection. Should the XML reader class be in anyway in the "inheritance path" of the MyClass object - the MyClass objects inherits from the XML reader because it uses a few methods. I can't see why it should. I don't like the idea of declaring an instance of the XML Reader class inside of MyClass and an MyClass object is meant to be a simple "record" from the database and I feel giving it loads of methods, other object instances is a bit messy. Perhaps my XML reader class should be static but C#'s native XMLReader isn't static.? Any comments would be greatly appreciated Thanks Thomas
