  • Is it any good to use binary arithmetic in a C++ code like "C style"?

    I like the fact that the C language lets you use binary arithmetic in an explicit way in your code, sometimes the use of the binary arithmetic can also give you a little edge in terms of performance; but since I started studying C++ i can't really tell how much i have seen the explicit use of something like that in a C++ code, something like a pointer to pointer structure or an instruction for jumping to a specific index value through the binary arithmetic. Is the binary arithmetic still important and relevant in the C++ world? How i can optimize my arithmetic and/or an access to a specific index? What about the C++ and the way in which the bits are arranged according to the standard? ... or i have taken a look at the wrong coding conventions ... ?

  • Using multiple indexes with buffer objects in OpenTK

    I've got multiple buffers in OpenGL holding data on position, normals and texcoords. I also have an equal number of buffers holding distinct index data for each of those buffers. I quite like this format (indvidual indexes for each buffer) utilised by COLLADA since it strikes me as optimally efficient at accessing each buffer. I've set up pointers to the relevant data arrays using VertexPointer, NormalPointer, etc however I have no way to assign pointers to the index buffers since DrawElements appear to only look at one ElementArrayBuffer. Can I utilise multiple indices some way or will I be better off using a different technique which can support this? I'd prefer to keep the distinct indices if at all possible.

  • Drawing multiple objects from one Vertex Buffer Object in OpenGL/OpenTK

    I am trying to experimenting drawing method using VBO in OpenGL. Many people normally use 1 vbo to store one object data array. I was trying to do something quite opposite which is storing multiple object data into 1 vbo then drawing it. There is story behind why i want to do this. I want to group many of objects as a single object sometime. However my code doesn't do the justice.     In my last post I went for a warts n all approach to set up a web role on Azure. In this post I’ll describe how to add an SQL Azure database to the project. This will be described with an as minimal as possible amount of code and screen dumps. All questions are welcome in the comments area. Please don’t email since questions answered in the comments field is made available to other visitors. As an example we will add a comments section to the site we used in the previous post (Länk här). Steps: 1. Create a Comments entity and then use Scaffolding to set up controller and view, and add ConnectionString to web.config. 2. Create SQL Azure database in Management Portal and link the new database 3. Test it online!   1. Right click Models folder, choose add, choose “class…” . Name the Class Comment. 1.1 Replace the Code in the class with the following: using System.Data.Entity; namespace MvcWebRole1.Models { public class Comment {    public int CommentId { get; set; }    public string Name { get; set; }      public string Content { get; set; } } public class CommentsDb : DbContext { public DbSet<Comment> CommentEntries { get; set; } } } Now Entity Framework can create a database and a table named Comment. Build your project to assert there are no build errors.   1.2 Right click Controllers folder, choose add, choose “class…” . Name the Class CommentController and fill out the values as in the example below.     1.3 Click Add. Replace everything within “ “ in the copied connectionstring with that you got from SQL Azure. You will have something like this:   2.3 Rebuild the application, right click the cloud project and choose “Package…” (if you haven’t set up publishing profile which we will do in our next blog post). Remember to choose the right config file, use debug for staging and release for production so your databases won’t collide. You should see something like this:   2.4 Go to Management Portal and click the Web Services menu, choose your service and click update in the bottom menu.   2.5 Link the newly created database to your application. Click the LINKED RESOURCES in the top menu and then click “Link” in the bottom menu. You should get something like this. 3. Alright then. Under the Dashboard you can find the link to your application. Click it to open it in a browser and then go to ~/Comments to try it out just the way we did locally. Success and end of this story!

  • jqGrid - dynamically load different drop down values for different rows depending on another column value

    Goal: As we all know the jqGrid examples in the demo and the Wiki always refer to static values for drop down boxes. This of course is a personal preference but in dynamic design these values should be populated from the database/xml file, etc, ideally JSON formatted. Can you do this in jqGrid, yes, but with some custom coding which we will briefly show below (refer to some of my other blog entries for a more detailed discussion on this topic). What you CANNOT do in jqGrid, referrign here up and to version 3.8.x, is to load different drop down values for different rows in the jqGrid. Well, not without some trickery, which is what this discussion is about. Issue: Of course the issue is that jqGrid has been designed for high performance and thus I have no issue with them loading a  reference to a single drop down values list for every column. This way if you have 500 rows or one, each row only refers to a single list for that particuolar column. Nice! SO how easy would it be to simply traverse the grid once loaded on gridComplete or loadComplete and simply load the select tag's options from scratch, via ajax, from memory variable, hard coded etc? Impossible! Since their is no embedded SELECT tag within each cell containing the drop down values (remeber it only has a reference to that list in memory), all you will see when you inspect the cell prior to clicking on it, or even before and on beforeEditCell, is an empty <TD></TD>. When trying to load that list via a click event on that cell will temporarily load the list but jqGrid's last internal callback event will remove it and replace it with the old one, and you are back to square one. Solution: Yes, after spending a few hours on this found a solution to the problem that does not require any updates to jqGrid source code, thank GOD! Before we get into the coding details, the solution here can of course be customized to suite your specific needs, this one loads the entire drop down list that would be needed across all rows once into global variable. I then parse this object that contains all the properties I need to filter the rows depending on which ones I want the user to see based off of another cell value in that row. This only happens when clicking the cell, so no performance penalty. You may of course to load it via ajax when the user clicks the cell, but I found it more effecient to load the entire list as part of jqGrid's normal editoptions: { multiple: false, value: listingStatus } colModel options which again keeps only a reference to the sinlge list, no duplciation.     I have a question on redirects. HTTP status code checker tool shows "HTTP/1.1 302 Moved Temporarily" for the home page url http://someurl.com (just a namesake url). Also, this url opens up http://www.someurl.com/general/index. As you can see, a non-www url to a www url redirect is happening. My questions are: Is a 302 redirect acceptable for the home page? Will this affect the site showing up in search results in anyway? Isnt redirection to /general/index a bad practice?

  • SH404SEF URLs in Joomla 1.5

    I have two modules to play with urls, the global configuration module and the sh404sef module. The global config is set to "Sef urls: YES" and "mod rewrite enabled: YES" and the sh404sef is set "url optimization: NO". My problem is, even with "Sef urls" set in the global config, my urls still don't seem to be that "user friendly" so I turn on the "Url optimization" using the sh404sef module, and I get better descriptive urls. However, the problem I inherit from doing this is that my dynamically populated chronoforms get messed up (only the chrono forms, other forms are fine); These forms are now showing up at the homepage instead of their own reserved page. Here's an example: Old form "GOOD" url: http://www.mycraftwork.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=94 New optimized "BAD" URL: http://www.mycraftwork.com/handthrown-pottery/alladin-teapot/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=94 Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!   • Broken links in content reports when tracking subdomains with Google Analytics

    I have a tracking code that I use on my main site and my blog, which is on a subdomain: www.example.com blog.example.com I have a single profile in Google Analytics. I use advanced segments to look at traffic to the main site vs. traffic to the blog. Problem 1: When I'm browsing my content reports under Standard Reporting, the "Page" column doesn't show the top-level or sub-domain, so I can't differentiate www.example.com/index.html from blog.example.com/index.html easily. According to the docs, this filter is supposed to make GA prepend the hostname to the page URL in your content reports, but it doesn't seem to work. Problem 2: When I click on the little "Open in new window" icon next to a given page in a content report line, it always assumes the page lives on www.example.com, so I get 404s when the page is actually on blog.example.com. Is there a good solution for these subdomain tracking problems?

    I had installed Ubuntu inside Windows XP but then I formatted XP and installed Windows 7. EDIT1: I used Wubi for the same. I want to know which one of the two will solve my problem? creating a virtual disk or resizing root? Also is resizing root possible as the 4GB ext4 partition is already in a NTFS format Hard Drive partition. At the time of installation I had allocated only 4GB of space to Ubuntu. I want to increase that size as I keep getting a low disk space notification. I have surfed through a lot of similar questions but this is not a duplicate. Because I want to know a little about the file systems. In order to solve my problem,do I have to increase the size of root.disk? Or will it be solved by creating a virtual disk? Also I want to know the difference between creating a virtual disk and just increasing disk space of root.I'm new to Ubuntu so I don't know how the file systems function. EDIT2:I have created a virtual disk of 10gb ,but I'm still getting the same notification.Is there anyway to install all further applications on the virtual disk I created?

  • Configuring A Subdomain (cPanel) - www works, subdomain on it's own doesn't

    I've created a sub domain on my website using cPanel at test.mydomain.com, and this created a folder in my main 'www' directory called test. In this folder is a folder called cgi-bin, and it seems to redirect the page to say "It works!", but when I upload my own index.html file to the test directory it keeps showing http://test.mydomain.com/cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi instead of the index file. If I go to www.test.mydomain.com then it works OK. How do I host my content at the sub domain? It's my first time setting one up so I'm a bit lost.

I tried to do that by using .htaccess but instead of fixing the problem, the crawl pages increased and a new crawl came www.mysite.com/www.mysite.com. My problems are as follows: to use the built in auto center script the scrolling changes the white space in between images during the transition to fit the width of the wrapper. The installation instructions at http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Oneiric_Installation_Guide download catalyst 12.1 However, there is no download available at http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx for my AGP card. Only Windows drivers are available. Should I go ahead and use the guide and manually install 12.1? I assume it's not on the amd website for a reason, but I was wondering if anybody had any experience with this. Thanks!

    How can I avoid using default new() to create each object? My previous demo had very unpleasant framerate hiccups during dynamic memory allocations (usually, when arrays are resized), and creating lots of small objects which often contain one pointer to some DirectX resource seems like an awful lot of waste. I'm thinking about: Creating a master look-up table to refer to objects by handles (for safety & ease of serialization), much like EntityList in source engine Creating a templated object pool, which will store items contiguously (more cache-friendly, fast iteration, etc.) and the stored elements will be accessed (by external systems) via the global lookup table. The object pool will use the swap-with-last trick for fast removal (it will invoke the object's ~destructor first) and will update the corresponding indices in the global table accordingly (when growing/shrinking/moving elements). The elements will be copied via plain memcpy(). Is it a good idea? Will it be safe to store objects of non-POD types (e.g. pointers, vtable) in such containers?   • Is there a better way to consume an ASP.NET Web API call in an MVC controller?

    In a new project I am creating for my work I am creating a fairly large ASP.NET Web API. The api will be in a separate visual studio solution that also contains all of my business logic and database interactions, Model classes as well. In the test application I am creating (which is asp.net mvc4), I want to be able to hit an api url I defined from the control and cast the return JSON to a Model class. The reason behind this is that I want to take advantage of strongly typing my views to a Model. This is all still in a proof of concept stage, so I have not done any performance testing on it, but I am curious if what I am doing is a good practice, or if I am crazy for even going down this route. Here is the code on the client controller: public class HomeController : Controller { protected string dashboardUrlBase = "http://localhost/webapi/api/StudentDashboard/"; public ActionResult Index() //This view is strongly typed against User { //testing against Joe Bob string adSAMName = "jBob"; WebClient client = new WebClient(); string url = dashboardUrlBase + "GetUserRecord?userName=" + adSAMName; //'User' is a Model class that I have defined. User result = JsonConvert.DeserializeObject<User>(client.DownloadString(url)); return View(result); } . . . } If I choose to go this route another thing to note is I am loading several partial views in this page (as I will also do in subsequent pages). The partial views are loaded via an $.ajax call that hits this controller and does basically the same thing as the code above: Instantiate a new WebClient Define the Url to hit Deserialize the result and cast it to a Model Class. So it is possible (and likely) I could be performing the same actions 4-5 times for a single page. Is there a better method to do this that will: Let me keep strongly typed views. Do my work on the server rather than on the client (this is just a preference since I can write C# faster than I can write javascript).

    I am new to web development and trying to study various types of websites as case study. Right now my focus is on how search engines works for an eCommerce website. I know basic functioning for a search engine, i.e. crawl web pages, index them and the display the results using those indexes. But I got little confuse in case of an eCommerce website. Don't you think that it would be better if a search engine instead of crawling the web pages containing products, it should directly crawl the database and index the products stored in the database? And when a user search for any product, it will simply give us the rows of the table which matches the user query? If this is not the case, can someone please explain how the usual method works on eCommerce website?

  • Best way to redirect users back to the pretty URL who land on the _escaped_fragment_ one?

    I am working on an AJAX site and have successfully implemented Google's AJAX recommendation by creating _escape_fragment_ versions of each page for it to index. Thus each page has 2 URLs: pretty: example.com#!blog ugly: example.com?_escaped_fragment_=blog However, I have noticed in my analytics that some users are arriving on the site via the "ugly" URL and am looking for a clean way to redirect them to the pretty URL without impacting Google's ability to index the site. I have considered using a 301 redirect in the head but fear that Googlebot might try to follow it and end up in an endless loop. I have also considered using a JavaScript redirect that Googlebot wouldn't execute but fear that Google may interpret this as cloaking and penalize the website. Is there a good, clean, acceptable way to redirect real users away from the ugly URL if for some reason or another they end up arriving at the site that way?

  • Is it possible for a web-server to send more files than requested for, and have the browser accept them?

    I've created a basic web server for a school project, and it serves static content without a problem. I thought of having the server parse all htm/html files for links to .js/.css/image files, and send these files to the client without these files being requested by the client later. eg. The browser requests: index.htm The server responds with intex.htm and image.jpg I modified the server to send two distinct http responses for a "GET /index.html HTTP1.1" (one for the html page and one for the image), but the browser ended up requesting the image when it was good and ready. Is there any way to bypass this? (use a multipart response, perhaps) Will these files be accepted by most browsers, or will they be rejected for security reasons?
