  • Convert a string of numbers to a NSTimeInterval

    I know I must be over-complicating this because it NSTimeInterval is just a double, but I just can't seem to get this done properly since I have had very little exposure to objective c. the scenario is as follows: The data im pulling into the app contains two values, startTime and endTime, which are the epoch times in milliseconds. The variables that I want to hold these values are NSTimeInterval *start; NSTimeInterval *end; I decided to store them as NSTimeIntervals but im thinking that maybe i ought to store them as doubles because theres no need for NSTimeIntervals since comparisons can just be done with a primitive. Either way, I'd like to know what I'm missing in the following step, where I try to convert from string to NSTimeInterval: tempString = [truckArray objectAtIndex:2]; tempDouble = [tempString doubleValue]; Now it's safely stored as a double, but I can't get the value into an NSTimeInterval. How should this be accomplished? Thanks

    There is a similar question on SO which suggests using NumberFormat which is what I have done. I am using the parse() method of NumberFormat. public static void main(String[] args) throws ParseException{ DecToTime dtt = new DecToTime(); dtt.decToTime("1.930000000000E+02"); } public void decToTime(String angle) throws ParseException{ DecimalFormat dform = new DecimalFormat(); //ParsePosition pp = new ParsePosition(13); Number angleAsNumber = dform.parse(angle); System.out.println(angleAsNumber); } The result I get is 1.93 I didn't really expect this to work because 1.930000000000E+02 is a pretty unusual looking number, do I have to do some string parsing first to remove the zeros? Or is there a quick and elegant way?

    I want a regular expression to validate a nickname: 6 to 36 characters, it should contain at least one letter. Other allowed characters: 0-9 and underscores.   • Getting consecutive version numbers from Hibernate's @Version usage once per transaction

    We use Hibernate with the following version definition for optimistic locking et. al: <version name="version" access="field" column="VERSION" type="long" unsaved-value="negative"/> This is fine and dandy; however, there is one small problem, which is that the first version for some entities is '0', and for others, it is '1'. Why this is happening, is that for some object graphs, an entity will be subject to both onSave and flushDirty - this is reasonable, such as if two object are circular dependencies. However, the version number gets incremented on both occasions, leading to the above '0' / '1' discrepancy. I'd really like the version number only to ever increment once per transaction. However, I can't see a simple way to do this in the hibernate versioning implementation, without hacking about with an Interceptor (which was how I generated a column value for version before, but I wanted hibernate to do it itself)..

  • Tracing spoofed mobile phone numbers

    I am being harassed by some prank caller that is spoofing his/her number neither T-Mobile nor the police can do anything about it. I have been told from one of my friends that if I set up an Asterisk server, I can accomplish the tracing of the prank caller. I am hardly knowledgeable in terms of networking, so a lot of what they told me was filled with jargon I couldn't really understand. But first things first, I downloaded Asterisk 1.5.0 and was finally able to install it (had issues with partitioning... In the end I just had Asterisk hog the entire HDD space). I tried out Asterisk, and it was slightly complicated for me so I decided to install trixbox 2.8.0.4 instead. It looks very similar to Asterisk... I'm not entirely sure what to do from here. I know I have to get the server up and running, but do I need a PBX card or something to accomplish what I'm trying to do? I'm running trixbox on a laptop to minimize electricity usage. Also, will I have to open any ports for the server? I have limited administrative permissions because of my father who is very uncomfortable with opening ports.

    I would like to create a TextBox that only accepts numeric values, in a specific range. What is the best way to implement such TextBox? I thought about deriving TextBox and to override the validation and coercion of the TextProperty. However, I am not sure how to do this, and I understand that deriving WPF control is generally not recommended. Edit: What I needed was a very basic textbox that filters out all key presses which are not digits.     In locales, e.g. French, with comma as decimal indicator (where "5,2" means five and two-tenths), how do users separate function arguments from each other? For example, in many programming/scripting languages, I could specify MAX(1.5, X) in a EN-US locale. How do you avoid the ambiguity between the comma as decimal indicator, and as argument separator? In particular, I'm interested in how software that's perceived as user-friendly in the foreign locale does it. Obviously, it's a no-brainer to say, "thou shalt use decimal POINTs", but that's not particularly "friendly".

    I'm trying to write an ARM program that will convert an ieee number to a TNS format number. TNS is a format used by some super computers, and is similar to ieee but different. I'm trying to use several masks to place the three different "part" of the ieee number in separate registers so I can move them around accordingly. EDIT: What I mean, is that after the subroutine runs, registers 4, 5, and 6 all remain 0. I can't figure out why the masks are not working. I think I do not fully understand how the number is being stored in the register or using the masks wrong. Any help appreciated. If you need more info just ask. I have an about screen in my application with some information like support phone number, email address, website URL and application version in form like 01.01.01 After setting autoLink="all" on the textView, all values are linked fine - except that version number 01.01.01 is linked as the phone number as well. Is there some way to exclude this text fragment from linkifing?

  • How are integers converted to strings under the hood?

    I suppose the real question is how to convert base2/binary to base10. The most common application of this would probably be in creating strings for output: turning a chunk of binary numerical data into an array of characters. How exactly is this done? my guess: Seeing as there probably isn't a string predefined for each numerical value, I'm guessing that the computer goes through each bit of the integer from right to left, each time incrementing the appropriate values in the char array/base10 notation places. If we take the number 160 in binary (10100000), it would know that a 1 in the 8th place means 128, so it places 1 into the third column, 2 in the second, and 8 in the third. The 1 in the 6th column means 32, and it would add those values to the second and first place, carrying over if needed. After this it's an easy conversion to actual char codes.

  • Computationally simple Pseudo-Gaussian Distribution with varying mean and standard deviation?

    This picture from wikipedia has a nice example of the sort of functions I'd ideally like to generate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Normal_Distribution_PDF.svg Right now I'm using the Irwin-Hall Distribution, which is more or less a Polynomial approximation of the Gaussian distribution...basically, you use uniform random number generator and iterate it x times, and take the average. The more iterations, the more like a Gaussian Distribution it is. It's pretty nice; however I'd like to be able to have one where I can vary the mean. For example, let's say I wanted a number between the range 0 and 10, but around 7. Like, the mean (if I repeated this function multiple times) would turn out to be 7, but the actual range is 0-10. Is there one I should look up, or should I work on doing some fancy maths with standard Gaussian Distributions?
