  • Create Custom Sized Thumbnail Images with Simple Image Resizer [Cross-Platform]

    Are you looking for an easy way to create custom sized thumbnail images for use in blog posts, photo albums, and more? Whether is it a single image or a CD full, Simple Image Resizer is the right app to get the job done for you. To add the new PPA for Simple Image Resizer open the Ubuntu Software Center, go to the Edit Menu, and select Software Sources. Access the Other Software Tab in the Software Sources Window and add the first of the PPAs shown below (outlined in red). The second PPA will be automatically added to your system. Once you have the new PPAs set up, go back to the Ubuntu Software Center and click on the PPA listing for Rafael Sachetto on the left (highlighted with red in the image). The listing for Simple Image Resizer will be right at the top…click Install to add the program to your system. After the installation is complete you can find Simple Image Resizer listed as Sir in the Graphics sub-menu. When you open Simple Image Resizer you will need to browse for the directory containing the images you want to work with, select a destination folder, choose a target format and prefix, enter the desired pixel size for converted images, and set the quality level. Convert your image(s) when ready… Note: You will need to determine the image size that best suits your needs before-hand. For our example we chose to convert a single image. A quick check shows our new “thumbnailed” image looking very nice.   • A C# implementation of the CallStream pattern

    Dusan published this interesting post a couple of weeks ago about a novel JavaScript chaining pattern: http://dbj.org/dbj/?p=514 It’s similar to many existing patterns, but the syntax is extraordinarily terse and it provides a new form of friction-free, plugin-less extensibility mechanism. Here’s a JavaScript example from Dusan’s post: CallStream("#container") (find, "div") (attr, "A", 1) (css, "color", "#fff") (logger); The interesting thing here is that the functions that are being passed as the first argument are arbitrary, they don’t need to be declared as plug-ins. Compare that with a rough jQuery equivalent that could look something like this: $.fn.logger = function () { /* ... */ } $("selector") .find("div") .attr("A", 1) .css("color", "#fff") .logger(); There is also the “each” method in jQuery that achieves something similar, but its syntax is a little more verbose. Of course, that this pattern can be expressed so easily in JavaScript owes everything to the extraordinary way functions are treated in that language, something Douglas Crockford called “the very best part of JavaScript”. One of the first things I thought while reading Dusan’s post was how I could adapt that to C#. After all, with Lambdas and delegates, C# also has its first-class functions. And sure enough, it works really really well. After about ten minutes, I was able to write this: CallStreamFactory.CallStream (p => Console.WriteLine("Yay!")) (Dump, DateTime.Now) (DumpFooAndBar, new { Foo = 42, Bar = "the answer" }) (p => Console.ReadKey()); Where the Dump function is: public static void Dump(object options) { Console.WriteLine(options.ToString()); } And DumpFooAndBar is: public static void DumpFooAndBar(dynamic options) { Console.WriteLine("Foo is {0} and bar is {1}.", options.Foo, options.Bar); } So how does this work? Well, it really is very simple. And not. Let’s say it’s not a lot of code, but if you’re like me you might need an Advil after that. First, I defined the signature of the CallStream method as follows: public delegate CallStream CallStream (Action<object> action, object options = null); The delegate define a call stream as something that takes an action (a function of the options) and an optional options object and that returns a delegate of its own type. Tricky, but that actually works, a delegate can return its own type. Then I wrote an implementation of that delegate that calls the action and returns itself: public static CallStream CallStream (Action<object> action, object options = null) { action(options); return CallStream; } Pretty nice, eh? Well, yes and no. What we are doing here is to execute a sequence of actions using an interesting novel syntax. But for this to be actually useful, you’d need to build a more specialized call stream factory that comes with some sort of context (like Dusan did in JavaScript). For example, you could write the following alternate delegate signature that takes a string and returns itself: public delegate StringCallStream StringCallStream(string message); And then write the following call stream (notice the currying): public static StringCallStream CreateDumpCallStream(string dumpPath) { StringCallStream str = null; var dump = File.AppendText(dumpPath); dump.AutoFlush = true; str = s => { dump.WriteLine(s); return str; }; return str; } (I know, I’m not closing that stream; sure; bad, bad Bertrand) Finally, here’s how you use it: CallStreamFactory.CreateDumpCallStream(@".\dump.txt") ("Wow, this really works.") (DateTime.Now.ToLongTimeString()) ("And that is all."); Next step would be to combine this contextual implementation with the one that takes an action parameter and do some really fun stuff. I’m only scratching the surface here. This pattern could reveal itself to be nothing more than a gratuitous mind-bender or there could be applications that we hardly suspect at this point. In any case, it’s a fun new construct. Or is this nothing new? You tell me… Comments are open :)

  • How to get rank from full-text search query with Linq to SQL?

    I am using Linq to SQL to call a stored procedure which runs a full-text search and returns the rank plus a few specific columns from the table Article. The rank column is the rank returned from the SQL function FREETEXTTABLE(). I've added this sproc to the data model designer with return type Article. This is working to get the columns I need; however, it discards the ranking of each search result. I'd like to get this information so I can display it to the user. So far, I've tried creating a new class RankedArticle which inherits from Article and adds the column Rank, then changing the return type of my sproc mapping to RankedArticle. When I try this, an InvalidOperationException gets thrown: Data member 'Int32 ArticleID' of type 'Heap.Models.Article' is not part of the mapping for type 'RankedArticle'. Is the member above the root of an inheritance hierarchy? I can't seem to find any other questions or Google results from people trying to get the rank column, so I'm probably missing something obvious here.

  • Why do I lose my javascript from the browser cache after a full page postback?

    Hi, I have an external javascript file which I include to my page on the code behind (as seen below). My problem is, when I my page makes a postback (not partial one), I check the loaded scripts by using FireBug, and I cannot see the javascript file in the list after the post back. I asusmed once it is included to page on the first load, browser will be caching it so that I do not need to re-include it. What am I doing wrong?   • How do I create a pull-down/up window in Android GUI?

    For Android GUI: I would like to create a window that I can pull up from the bottom of another window, kind of like the Notification bar or the tab in the bottom on Spotify for Android. I want to be able to grab a small piece of the window and pull it up. Or just click it and it will "pop up". And afterwards be able to pull or click it so it returs to its original space. Does anyone know a good way to do this?

  • Possible to rank partial matches in Postgres full text search?

    I'm trying to calculate a ts_rank for a full-text match where some of the terms in the query may not be in the ts_vector against which it is being matched. I would like the rank to be higher in a match where more words match. Seems pretty simple? Because not all of the terms have to match, I have to | the operands, to give a query such as to_tsquery('one|two|three') (if it was &, all would have to match). The problem is, the rank value seems to be the same no matter how many words match. In other words, it's maxing rather than multiplying the clauses. select ts_rank('one two three'::tsvector, to_tsquery('one')); gives 0.0607927. select ts_rank('one two three'::tsvector, to_tsquery('one|two|three|four')); gives the expected lower value of 0.0455945 because 'four' is not the vector. But select ts_rank('one two three'::tsvector, to_tsquery('one|two')); gives 0.0607927 and likewise select ts_rank('one two three'::tsvector, to_tsquery('one|two|three')); gives 0.0607927 I would like the result of ts_rank to be higher if more terms match. Possible? To counter one possible response: I cannot calculate all possible subsequences of the search query as intersections and then union them all in a query because I am going to be working with large queries. I'm sure there are plenty of arguments against this anyway! Edit: I'm aware of ts_rank_cd but it does not solve the above problem.

  • What's the maximum size Windows 7 allows for ReadyBoost?

    I read somewhere the Windows 7 had removed the limit on ReadyBoost from 4GB and now allows an unlimited number of GBs. I would like to reconfirm this as a fact. At present, my Windows 7 RC 7100 allows me a maximum of 4GB on one of my 8GB flash drives (though I've tried to connect two at a time and use 4GB on one and 2GB on another). Thanks!

Here's my HTML: <input type="button" onclick="window.location='/registrations/new'" value="Start a new registration" id="create"> Update: Alternatively, I'm thinking about doing something where I assert that a location is specified in the window.location='', store that location, and call the open() command using that location. Not sure if this is an acceptable approach to testing this.

  • How do I get started with the M-Project is a Mobile HTML5 JavaScript Framework on Windows?

    This website for this great tool, call the M-Project says that I will need to add a doskey like this: doskey espresso=node C:\Path\To\Espresso\bin\espresso.js $1 $2 $3 $4 (It is a tool for creating Native mobile apps with the Phonegap/Cordova library, and it seems to be something that would be very helpful in this process). If I enter that at a command prompt in Windows 7 or 8, it's not going to stick around or persist. Is it an Environment Variable? Then it says at this page: http://www.the-m-project.org/ that it will work with Windows with some additional tools installed. The next line says that Node.js is needed, so I don't know if that is the additional tools mentioned above. Also, in an old discussion I read that one could just install cygwin. What would that do? It doesn't actually install any of the Linux distributions. I did install Ubuntu 12.04 server with VirtualBox because I thought it would be good to learn more about using Linux as I manage websites that are on a dedicated host. Anyway, the suggestion to install cygwin did not go into any details... I guess it would allow one to create a bash profile?? which would only work in a cygwin Command Line Window. Is that right? Isn't there a similar file that one could use in Windows or an Environment Variable that one could set to be able to achieve the same result? Thanks, Bruce

  • Unusual heap size limitations in VS2003 C++

    I have a C++ app that uses large arrays of data, and have noticed while testing that it is running out of memory, while there is still plenty of memory available. I have reduced the code to a sample test case as follows; void MemTest() { size_t Size = 500*1024*1024; // 512mb if (Size > _HEAP_MAXREQ) TRACE("Invalid Size"); void * mem = malloc(Size); if (mem == NULL) TRACE("allocation failed"); } If I create a new MFC project, include this function, and run it from InitInstance, it works fine in debug mode (memory allocated as expected), yet fails in release mode (malloc returns NULL). Single stepping through release into the C run times, my function gets inlined I get the following // malloc.c void * __cdecl _malloc_base (size_t size) { void *res = _nh_malloc_base(size, _newmode); RTCCALLBACK(_RTC_Allocate_hook, (res, size, 0)); return res; } Calling _nh_malloc_base void * __cdecl _nh_malloc_base (size_t size, int nhFlag) { void * pvReturn; // validate size if (size > _HEAP_MAXREQ) return NULL; ' ' And (size _HEAP_MAXREQ) returns true and hence my memory doesn't get allocated. Putting a watch on size comes back with the exptected 512MB, which suggests the program is linking into a different run-time library with a much smaller _HEAP_MAXREQ. Grepping the VC++ folders for _HEAP_MAXREQ shows the expected 0xFFFFFFE0, so I can't figure out what is happening here. Anyone know of any CRT changes or versions that would cause this problem, or am I missing something way more obvious?

    I'm trying to get the title of the active window. The application is a background task so if the user has Eclipse open the function returns "Eclipse - blabla", so it's not getting the window title of my own window. I'm developing this in Python 2.6 using PyQt4. My current solution, borrowed and slightly modified from an old answer here at SO, looks like this: def get_active_window_title(): title = '' root_check = '' root = Popen(['xprop', '-root'], stdout=PIPE) if root.stdout != root_check: root_check = root.stdout for i in root.stdout: if '_NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW(WINDOW):' in i: id_ = i.split()[4] id_w = Popen(['xprop', '-id', id_], stdout=PIPE) for j in id_w.stdout: if 'WM_ICON_NAME(STRING)' in j: if title != j.split()[2]: return j.split("= ")[1].strip(' \n\"') It works for most windows, but not all.
