• Reading the tea leaves from Windows Azure support

  A few idle thoughts… Three months ago I had an issue regarding Windows Azure where I was unable to login to the management portal. At the time I contacted Azure support, the issue was soon resolved and I thought no more about it. Until today that is when I received an email from Azure support providing a detailed analysis of the root cause, the fix and moreover precise details about when and where things occurred. The email itself is interesting and I have included the entirety of it below. A few things were interesting to me: The level of detail and the diligence in investigating and reporting the issue I found really rather impressive. They even outline the number of users that were affected (127 in case you can’t be bothered reading). Compare this to the quite pathetic support that another division within Microsoft, Skype, provided to Greg Low recently: Skype support and dead parrot sketches   This line: “Windows Azure performed a planned change from using the Microsoft account service (formerly Windows Live ID) to the Azure Active Directory (AAD) as its primary authentication mechanism on August 24th. This change was made to enable future innovation in the area of authentication – particularly for organizationally owned identities, identity federation, stronger authentication methods and compliance certification. ” I also found to be particularly interesting. I have long thought that one of the reasons Microsoft has proved to be such a money-making machine in the enterprise is because they provide the infrastructure and then upsell on top of that – and nothing is more infrastructural than Active Directory. It has struck me of late that they are trying to make the same play of late in the cloud by tying all their services into Azure Active Directory and here we see a clear indication of that by making AAD the authentication mechanism for anyone using Windows Azure. I get the feeling that we’re going to hear much much more about AAD in the future; isn’t it about time we could log on to SQL Azure Windows Azure SQL Database without resorting to SQL authentication, for example? And why do Microsoft have two identity providers – Microsoft Account (aka Windows Live ID) and AAD – isn’t it about time those things were combined? As I said, just some idle thoughts. Below is the transcript of the email if you are interested. @Jamiet  This is regarding the support request <redacted> where in you were not able to login into the windows azure management portal with live id. We are providing you with the summary, root cause analysis and information about permanent fix: Incident Title: You were unable to access Windows Azure Portal after Microsoft Account to Azure Active Directory account Migration. Service Impacted: Management Portal Incident Start Date and Time: 8/24/2012 4:30:00 PM Date and Time Service was Restored: 10/17/2012 12:00:00 AM Summary: Windows Azure performed a planned change from using the Microsoft account service (formerly Windows Live ID) to the Azure Active Directory (AAD) as its primary authentication mechanism on August 24th.   This change was made to enable future innovation in the area of authentication – particularly for organizationally owned identities, identity federation, stronger authentication methods and compliance certification.   While this migration was largely transparent to Windows Azure users, a small number of users whose sign-in names were part of a Windows Live Custom Domain were unable to login.   This incompatibility was not discovered during the Quality Assurance testing phase prior to the migration. Customer Impact: Customers whose sign-in names were part of a Windows Live Custom Domain were unable to sign-in the Management Portal after ~4:00 p.m. PST on August 24th, 2012.   We determined that the issue did impact at least 127 users in 98 of these Windows Live Custom Domains and had a maximum potential impact of 1,110 users in total. Root Cause: The root cause of the issue was an incompatibility in the AAD authentication service to handle logins from Microsoft accounts whose sign-in names were part of a Windows Live Custom Domains.  This issue was not discovered during the Quality Assurance testing phase prior to the migration from Microsoft Account (MSA) to AAD. Mitigations: The issue was mitigated for the majority of affected users by 8:20 a.m. PST on August 25th, 2012 by running some internal scripts to correct many known Windows Live Custom Domains.   The remaining affected domains fell into two categories: Windows Live Custom Domains that were not corrected by 8/25/2012. An additional 48 Windows Live Custom Domains were fixed in the weeks following the incident within 2 business days after the AAD team received an escalation from product support regarding those accounts. Windows Live Custom domains that were also provisioned in Office365. Some of the affected Windows Live Custom Domains had already been provisioned in AAD because their owners signed up for Office365 which is a service that also uses AAD.   In these cases the Azure customers had to work around the issue by renaming their Microsoft Account or using a different Microsoft Account to administer their Azure subscription. Permanent Fix: The Azure Active Directory team permanently fixed the issue for all customers on 10/17/2012 in an upgraded release of the AAD service.

• Using MPMoviePlayerViewController full screen in iPad app that's not fully ported from iPad...yet.

  I have an iPhone app that launched the good old MPMoviePlayerController with a movie file. I changed it to a MPMoviePlayerViewController and used presentMoviePlayerViewControllerAnimated to get the movie to play on the iPad. It looks awful with the 2x sized controls. Can this be coded in such a way that it will look good regardless of which device? This is just an intermediate thing, but I need to get it going quickly. Thanks for any pointers.

  Hi I am trying to select count of rows from a table which has foreign keys of two tables. The C# code threw the error mentioned below. So, I added a primary key column to the table (schema as follows) and regenerated the code. But still the same error is coming.   Hi, I have a gridview with some imagebuttons, each of which kicks off a report page for that item. The report take 10-15 seconds to run, so I'd like a popup 'Generating report, please wait' type thing. I can think of a few ways but would like the opinion of those more experienced than I. The options I was considering: a) link my imagebutton to an intermediate page that says 'please wait', and then refer it onto the report page from there. Seems a bit clunky b) Investigate using jquery or similar. I have telerik controls, they have a few things but it isn't clear if any are suitable. c) Define some kind of CSS layer with a please wait warning on it, and make it visible as part of the button's onclick event d) Look into jquery or similar Any thoughts? • controller path not found for static images? asp.net mvc routing issue?

  I have an image folder stored at ~/Content/Images/ I am loading these images via <img src="/Content/Images/Image.png" /> Recently, the images aren't loading and I am getting the following errors in my error log. What's weird is that some images load fine, while others do not load. Anyone have any idea what is wrong with my routes? Am I missing an ignore route for the /Content/ folder?   My target: a DocumentPaginator which takes a FlowDocument with a table, which splits the table to fit the pagesize and repeat the header/footer (special tagged TableRowGroups) on every page. For splitting the table I have to know the heights of its rows. While building the FlowDocument-table by code, the height/width of the TableRows are 0 (of course). If I assign this document to a FlowDocumentScrollViewer (PageSize is set), the heights etc. are calculated. Is this possible without using an UI-bound object? Instantiating a FlowDocumentScrollViewer which is not bound to a window doesn't force the pagination/calculation of the heights. • Use synergy with Physical KVM

  I am using synergy on a Linux Mint computer as the server with a Mac as the client. I also have a physical KVM switch. The problem I have is that when ever I switch the physical KVM to my Mac, synergy stops working as in the keyboard and mouse don't work with the Mac. Thanks in advance! • onload Event in embedded SVG not calling function in attached script. Scope Issue?

  Hi So I've got an XHTML page with a script - not inline > <script type="text/javascript" > src="../global/js/scripts.js"></script> and an embedded (I tried embed and object, same behavior) SVG document with a onload="CheckIfLoaded(evt)" attribute. The problem is firefox doesn't call the CheckIfLoaded() function in scripts.js. Firebug gives me "CheckIfLoaded() is not defined" with no reference to any line numbers. I can't find any information regarding the scope of javascript functions with respect to embedded content. Curiously, it works fine in IE. I could of course add a reference to the script into the SVG file as well but I believe that will result in the client downloading the scripts file twice and in addition I have 1000+ svg files and I'd really rather not add one line to all of them, although I suppose I could write a batch file or whatever if I have to.   Ok, I am using insertRow to insert a TR element into a table, but for some reason it doesn't count that inserted TR element as a sibling of the others when I do nextSibling on it.   Firstly sorry for the long piece of code pasted below. This is my first time actually having to worry about performance of an application so I haven't really ever worried about performance. This piece of code pretty much searches for an image inside another image, it takes 30 seconds to run on my computer, converting the images to greyscale and other changes shaved of 15 seconds, I need another 15 shaved off. I did read a bunch of pages and looked at examples but I couldn't find the same problems in my code. So any help would be greatly appreciated. • Synchronizing issue: I want the main thread to be run before another thread but it sometimes doesn´t

  I have done my own small concurrency framework (just for learning purposes) inspired by the java.util.concurrency package. This is about the Callable/Future mechanism. My code below is the whole one and is compilable and very easy to understand. My problem is that sometimes I run into a deadlock where the first thread (the main thread) awaits for a signal from the other thread. But then the other thread has already notified the main thread before the main thread went into waiting state, so the main thread cannot wake up. FutureTask.get() should always be run before FutureTask.run() but sometimes the run() method (which is called by new thread) runs before the get() method (which is called by main thread). I don´t know how I can prevent that. This is a pseudo code of how I want the two threads to be run. //From main thread: Executor.submit().get() (in get() the main thread waits for new thread to notify) ->submit() calls Executor.execute(FutureTask object) -> execute() starts new thread -> new thread shall notify `main thread` I cannot understand how the new thread can start up and run faster than the main thread that actually starts the new thread. • Steganography : Encoded audio and video file not being played, getting corrupted. What is the issue

  I have made a steganography program to encrypt/Decrypt some text under image audio and video. I used image as bmp(54 byte header) file, audio as wav(44 byte header) file and video as avi(56 byte header) file formats. When I tries to encrypt text under all these file then it gets encrypted successfully and are also getting decrypted correctly. But it is creating a problem with audio and video i.e these files are not being played after encrypted result. What can be the problem. I am working on Turbo C++ compiler. I know it is super outdated compiler but I have to do it in this only.
