• Setup Jetty 7 with JSP engine

  I've been trying to get Jetty to run my web app via a custom launcher (embedded). I am trying to figure out how to tell Jetty which java compiler to use for JSPs. I want to do what java -jar start.jar -OPTIONS=jsp does, but without using start.jar. Here is what shows on the console: Javac exception, Unable to find a javac compiler; com.sun.tools.javac.Main is not on the classpath. Perhaps JAVA_HOME does not point to the JDK Do I need to put the javac libraries into my classpath?

  My ideal workflow would consist of the following steps edit the code compile git commit -a -m "commit message" start running the new binaries, tests, etc. (may take 10+ minutes) start new changes, while the binaries are still running when step # 4 is finished, edit the commit message from step # 3, without committing the changes introduced in step # 5, by adding, say, "test FOO failed" I cannot use git commit -a --amend -m "new commit message", because this commits the new changes as well. I'm not sure that I want to bother with staging or branching. I wish I could just edit the commit message without committing any new changes. Is it possible?

Is it possible to open the command prompt (and I guess any other terminal for other systems), and execute commands in the newly opened window? Currently what I have is this: Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime(); rt.exec(new String[]{"cmd.exe","/c","start"}); I've tried adding the next command after the "start", I've tried running another rt.exec containing my command, but I can't find a way to make it work. If it matters, I'm trying to run a command similar to this: java -flag -flag -cp terminal-based-program.jar

  I am currently writing a Haskell program that does some initialization work and then calls ncmpcpp. What I am trying to do is start ncmpcpp and terminate the Haskell program, so that only ncmpcpp is left (optionally, the program can keep running in the background, as long as it's unintrusive) However, even though I am able to start ncmpcpp, I cannot interact with it. I see its output, but input appears to be impossible. • Mirroring a portion of the screen to an external display (in OSX)

  I would like to write a program that can mirror a portion of the main display into a new window. Ideally this new window could then be displayed on an external monitor. I have seen this uiltity for a flightsim that does this on a pc (a multifunction display extractor). MFDex http://trac2.assembla.com/lightnings..._x86_Setup.msi I have looked at screen magnifiers or vnc clients for ideas but I think I need to write something from scratch. I have tried to do some reading on osx programing but where do I start in terms of gaining access to the display? I somehow need to extract the graphics from a particular program. Is it best to go near the final output stage (the individual pixels sent to the display) or somewhere nearer the window management stage. Any ideas or pointers would be much appreciated.   I'm trying to replicate the Perl and PHP style pack and unpack functions in JavaScript. Unsigned integers were easy enough, so my pack('n') and pack('N') are ok. But my lack of a computer science background is a hurdle now and I don't know where to start with pack('d') for packing JavaScript's standard floating point. Is there a JavaScript library for this out there? If not, is there a good resource where I can learn how to do this? I am fine with bitwise and binary level operations in JS, I just don't know where to start with the logic. Thanks.

  Maybe it's not worth worrying about in this scenario, but lets say you have two classes, a JFrame with all its components, and a server-like class that handles requests from remote clients. The user is able to start and stop server objects through the GUI, and is shown various events that happen to each server object. Whether or not I use an explicit pattern (like MVC), it seems like the JFrame needs a reference to the server class (to call start and stop) and the server needs a reference to the JFrame (to notify of it of certain events). Is this a problem, or am I looking at this situation in the wrong way?

• Swing: How do I run a job from AWT thread, but after a window was layed out?

  My complete GUI runs inside the AWT thread, because I start the main window using SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait(...). Now I have a JDialog which has just to display a JLabel, which indicates that a certain job is in progress, and close that dialog after the job was finished. The problem is: the label is not displayed. That job seems to be started before JDialog was fully layed-out. When I just let the dialog open without waiting for a job and closing, the label is displayed. The last thing the dialog does in its ctor is setVisible(true). Things such as revalidate(), repaint(), ... don't help either. Even when I start a thread for the monitored job, and wait for it using someThread.join() it doesn't help, because the current thread (which is the AWT thread) is blocked by join, I guess. Replacing JDialog with JFrame doesn't help either. So, is the concept wrong in general? Or can I manage it to do certain job after it is ensured that a JDialog (or JFrame) is fully layed-out? • Is my way of doing threads in Android correct?

  Hi, I'm writing a live wallpaper, and I'm forking off two separate threads in my main wallpaper service. One updates, and the other draws. I was under the impression that once you call thread.start(), it took care of everything for you, but after some trial and error, it seems that if I want my update and draw threads to keep running, I have to manually keep calling their run() methods? In other words, instead of calling start() on both threads and forgetting, I have to manually set up a delayed handler event that calls thread.run() on both the update and draw threads every 16 milliseconds. Is this the correct way of having a long running thread? Also, to kill threads, I'm just setting them to be daemons, then nulling them out. Is this method ok? Most examples I see use some sort of join() / interrupt() in a while loop...I don't understand that one...

  Hi buddies, I'm developing on Ubuntu based, actually I got one script in-charged on GUI(console) setup. It runs before another scripts (rcX.d) start. Currently, I installed this script on rc2.d and start earlier than other ones. But when run on real machine, I can't input any keystroke on "dialog --inputbox" or whiptail through shell script. Additionally, It runs well on my Virtual Machine (Virtual Box and Vmware), that's so strange! So, does anybody give some help or point me any clues for overcome this ? Thanks

  Hi, I'm working on a media player and am able to load in a single .wav and play it. As seen in the code below. foo = wx.FileDialog(self, message="Open a .wav file...", defaultDir=os.getcwd(), defaultFile="", style=wx.FD_MULTIPLE) foo.ShowModal() queue = foo.GetPaths() self.playing_thread = threading.Thread(target=self.playFile, args=(queue[0], 'msg')) self.playing_thread.start() But the problem is, when I try to make the above code into a loop for multiple .wav files. Such that while playing_thread.isActive == True, create and .start() the thread. Then if .isActive == False, pop queue[0] and load the next .wav file. Problem is, my UI will lock up and I'll have to terminate the program. Any ideas would be appreciated.

• Developing for iPhone or Android?

  I'd like to start developing for iPhone or Android in my spare time, as a chance to learn something new but also hoping make some extra income. I'm not sure which is the best development for me to start developing on. I own an iPhone, but I don't have a Mac (which I would need to use the SDK), plus with the iPhone I believe there's an annual charge to develop for it. As far as I understand Android, the SDK is free and can be used on Windows. Professionally I develop using .net and C#, which sounds more similar to the Java based Android enviroment. Another negative I perceive against iPhone is it has a much more crowded App Store, I would think apps get better exposure on Android?

  In an application, i saw that they used to display pictures of vehicles. But what was amazing was when we touch and swipe in that picture, it rotates in 3d way left and right. And from the front view we can rotate and get to see its back view also. It is a very good feature and i was trying to replicate it. But couldnt get an idea of how and where to start.   I'm currently taking computer systems in a technical institute and I will start looking for a coop job by next September. Since summer vacation is only a few weeks away, I was wondering what I should learn or do to help me land a job and do well in it. I'm pretty sure I'm ahead of most of my classmates since I got around 1.5 years "head start." For now, I'm planning to learn how to use source control (git - for no reason really) and was actually thinking of learning Scheme through SICP and maybe build something nice with it at the end. On the other hand, I'm wondering if it's better to expand on what I know right now and I'm thinking of C++ since I enjoy it a lot more than others like Java. Can I get advice on this? thanks!
