  • Does UserId data type affect FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(UserId.ToString(), false)?

    Does the original data type of the username string in a call to FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(...) make any difference with regards to security or code maintainability? As I understand it, the cookie is encrypted and used to identify a user on each request. I'm curious whether it should affect the design of the primary key on my Users table in my database, eg. Guid vs int or a unique username string.

  • spring-nullpointerexception- cant access autowired annotated service (or dao) in a no-annotations class

    I have this problem that I cannot fix. From my @Controller, i can easily access my autowired @Service class and play with it no problem. But when I do that from a separate class without annotations, it gives me a NullPointerException. My Controller (works)- @Controller public class UserController { @Autowired UserService userService;... My separate Java class (not working)- public final class UsersManagementUtil { @Autowired UserService userService; or @Autowired UserDao userDao; userService or userDao are always null! Was just trying if any one of them works.   • Could not load file or assembly 'Base' or one of its dependencies. Access is denied

    I have deployed one web project into Azure emulator. And I get this error saying that Could not load file or assembly Base. The thing is that this web project, got dependencies to another project in the same solution. I have added that dependency into the reference list of my web project. And if I run this web application without using the azure emulator it will run fine. But I will get error when I try to run it on the azure emulator. At first glance I thought that I maybe need to add the other project as role also. But it couldn't be that. Anyone know what the problem might be? I hope I got enough data for you to look into.   • Caching asp.net viewdata

    Hey guys, I'm currently thinking about caching most of my viewdata excpt user specific data after a user logs on. I thought the simplest way was caching the ViewData object itself and adding the user specific data after it was loaded. Are there any downsides of this approach?   • How to limit number of displayed items in html.dropdownlist?

    I have a html.dropdownlist on my webpage as follows: <%=Html.DropDownList("MyDropDown", Model.Data, new { @class = "dropdown"})%> I am populating the dropdown with ~80 items. The issue is that when I click the dropdown the list of items is rendered from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen. How can I set up the dropdownlist so that it only displays a maximum of 20 items when the dropdown menu is clicked (i.e. user needs to scroll down to see items 21 - 80)? I was anticipating (!) that there would be a html.dropdownlist property to control the number of displayed items that would allow something like the following e.g.: <% =Html.DropDownList("MyDropDown", Model.Data, new { @class = "dropdown", rows ="20"}) %> From research I have been doing on the msdn website it appears that there is no such property and that each browser has its own rules of how many items are displayed in a dropdownlist (?). I am using IE6 and IE7.

  • Why are my connections not closed even if I explicitly dispose of the DataContext?

    I encapsulate my linq to sql calls in a repository class which is instantiated in the constructor of my overloaded controller. The constructor of my repository class creates the data context so that for the life of the page load, only one data context is used. In my destructor of the repository class I explicitly call the dispose of the DataContext though I do not believe this is necessary. Using performance monitor, if I watch my User Connections count and repeatedly load a page, the number increases once per page load. Connections do not get closed or reused (for about 20 minutes). I tried putting Pooling=false in my config to see if this had any effect but it did not. In any case with pooling I wouldn't expect a new connection for every load, I would expect it to reuse connections. I've tried putting a break point in the destructor to make sure the dispose is being hit and sure enough it is. So what's happening?     Right now, I'm trying to work around an IE6/7 bug which requires the wrapping of the </a closing tag with this IE specific comment to make some drop-down menu work: <!--[if IE 7]><!--></a><!--<![endif]--> Unfortunately, I cannot inject this directly into my View page code like this: <%= Html.ActionLink("LinkName<!--[if IE 7]><!--></a><!--<![endif]-->","Action","Controller") %> As Html.ActionLink will do the safe thing and filter out the comment to prevent a Javascript injection attack. Ok, cool. I'm fine with that. Good design decision. What I'd like to do is write an Extension Method to this, but the process is eluding me as I haven't done this before.   • Better performance to Query the DB or Cache small result sets?

    Say I need to populate 4 or 5 dropdowns w/ items from a database. Each drop down will have < 15 items in it. These items almost never change. Now I could query the DB each time the page is accessed or I could grab the values from a custom class that would check to see if they already exist in ASP.Net's cache and only if they don't query the DB to update the cache. It's trivial for me to write but I'm unsure if the performace would be better or not. I think it would be (although not likely anything huge). What do you think?

  • Applying fine-grained security to an existing application

    I've inherited a reasonably large and complex ASP.NET MVC3 web application using EF Code First on SQL Server. It uses ASP.NET Membership roles with database authentication. The controller actions are secured with attributes derived from AuthorizeAttribute that map roles to actions. There are extension methods for the finer points, such as showing a particular widget to particular roles. This is works great and I have a good understanding of the current security model. I've been asked to provide finer grained security at the data level. For example a 'Customer' user can only see data (throughout the database) associated with themselves and not other Customers. The problem is that 'Customer' is only 1 of 5 different types with their own specific restrictions (each of the 9 roles is one of these 5 types). The best thing I can think of is to go through all the data repositories and extend each and every LINQ statements/query with a filter for every user type. Even if I had time for that it doesn't seem like the most elegant way. Any suggestions? I really don't know where to start with this so anything could be helpful. Many thanks.

  • How to disable server-side caching on IIS 7.5 (asp net mvc3)

    I'm struggling with my IIS setup regarding caching, here's a brief description of my problem: I'm making a site for mobile and non-mobile, sharing the same controllers. IE: mysite/page will serve either mysite/page.cshtml, or mysite/M/page.cshtml, depending on the device. Here's the catch, it worked fine with my local and integration environment (cassiini and iis 6), but on another machine (2008r2/iis 7.5), apparently there is an aggressive server-side caching policy: If I access the website from a desktop machine, I have the correct pages (desktop version) If now I use my mobile phone to access the site, I will have the desktop version, (which implies a server-side cache, my phone is not using the same network). On the contrary, if I were to restart the server and access the site using my phone first, then I will get the mobile version on my desktop (only for the pages I already visited of course). I tried 2 solutions so far: Disabling OutputCache from my Web.config: <httpModules> [..] <remove name="OutputCache" /> </httpModules> And unchecking "Enable output cache" in "Output Caching" for my site in IIS. What's bugging me is that I do not have this problem with my other server (iis 6.0), although caching is enabled on this one, which leads me to think it is related to iis 7 caching addition. My question is simple: how does one disable server-side caching on IIS 7.5? Thanks in advance for your iis lights!

    I have a .Net MVC4 model / view with a number of [Required] fields, one of which is selected via a drop down list, "Content_CreatedBy" [the first code block below]. Client side validation fires on all fields except the DDL [although server side validation does not allow no entry in DDL]. I have tried validating on the DDL text as well its numeric value but niether fire on the client side. Can anyone see what I am doing wrong?   • Exception calling UpdateModel - Value cannot be null or empty

    This is probably something silly I'm missing but I'm definitely lost. I'm using .NET 4 RC and VS 2010. This is also my first attempt to use UpdateModel in .NET 4, but every time I call it, I get an exception saying Value cannont be null or empty. I've got a simple ViewModel called LogOnModel: [MetadataType(typeof(LogOnModelMD))] public class LogOnModel { public string Username { get; set; } public string Password { get; set; } public class LogOnModelMD { [StringLength(3), Required] public object Username { get; set; } [StringLength(3), Required] public object Password { get; set; } } } My view uses the new strongly typed helpers in MVC2 to generate a textbox for username and one for the password. When I look at FormCollection in my controller method, I see values for both coming through. And last but not least, here's are post controller methods: // POST: /LogOn/ [HttpPost] public ActionResult Index(FormCollection form) { var lm = new LogOnModel(); UpdateModel(lm, form); var aservice = new AuthenticationService(); if (!aservice.AuthenticateLocal(lm.Username, lm.Password)) { ModelState.AddModelError("User", "The username or password submitted is invalid, please try again."); return View(lm); } return Redirect("~/Home"); } Can someone please lend some insight into why UpdateModel would be throwing this exception?     How should I properly implement data access in my custom model binders? Like in controllers I use IContentRepository and then have it create an instance of its implementing class in constructor. So I have everything ready for incorporating IoC (DI) at a later stage. Now I need something similar in model binder. I need to make some DB lookups in the binder. I'm thinking of doing it the same way I do it in controllers but I am open to suggestion.     What I'm trying to do is create an extension method for the HtmlHelper to create a specific output and associated details like TextBoxFor<. What I want to do is specify the property from the model class as per TextBoxFor<, then an associated controller action and other parameters. So far the signature of the method looks like: public static MvcHtmlString Create<TModel, TProperty, TController>(this HtmlHelper<TModel> htmlHelper, Expression<Func<TModel, TProperty>> expression, Expression<Action<TController>> action, object htmlAttributes) where TController : Controller where TModel : class The issue occurs when I go to call it. In my view if I call it as per the TextBoxFor without specifying the Model type I am able to specify the lambda expression to set the property which it's for, but when I go to specify the action I am unable to. However, when I specify the controller type Html.Create<HomeController>( ... ) I am unable to specify the model property that the control is to be created for. I want to be able to call it like <%= Html.Create(x => x.Title, controller => controller.action, null) %> I've been hitting my head for a few hours now on this issue over the past day, can anyone point me in the right direction?

    I have a similar concept to the SO questions/tags scenario however am trying to decide the best way of implementation. Tables Questions, QuestionTags and Tags Questions QuestionTags Tags --------- ------------ ---- QID QID TID QName TID TName When adding/updating a question I have 2 textboxes. The important part is a single textbox that allows users to enter in multiple Tags separated by spaces. I am using Linq2Sql so the Questions model has an EntitySet of QuestionTags with then link to Tags. My question is regarding the adding/updating of Questions (part 1), and also how to best show QuestionTags for a Question (part 2). Part 1 Before performing an add/update, my service layer needs to deal with 3 scenarios before passing to their respective repositories. Insert Tags that do not already exist Insert/Update Question Insert QuestionTags - when updating need to remove existing QuestionTags Here is my code below however started to get into a bit of a muddle.   • DotNetOpenAuth / WebSecurity Basic Info Exchange

    I've gotten a good number of OAuth logins working on my site now. My implementation is based on the WebSecurity classes with amends to the code to suit my needs (I pulled the WebSecurity source into mine). However I'm now facing a new set of problems. In my application I have opted to make the user email address the login identifier of choice. It's naturally unique and suits this use case. However, the OAuth "standards" strikes again. Some providers will return your email address as "username" (Google) some will return the display name (Facebook). As it stands I see to options given my particular scenario: Option 1 Pull even more framework source code into my solution until I can chase down where the OpenIdRelyingParty class is actually interacted with (via the DotNetOpenAuth.AspNet facade) and make addition information requests from the OpenID Providers. Option 2 When a user first logs in using an OpenID provider I can display a kind of "complete registration" form that requests missing info based on the provider selected.* Option 2 is the most immediate and probably the quickest to implement but also includes some code smells through having to do something different based on the provider selected. Option 1 will take longer but will ultimately make things more future proof. I will need to perform richer interactions down the line so this also has an edge in that regard. The more I get into the code it does seem that the WebSecurity class itself is actually very limiting as it hides lots of useful DotNetOpenAuth functionality in the name of making integration easier. Andrew (the author of DNOA) has said that the Attribute Exchange stuff happens in the OpenIdRelyingParty class but I cannot see from the DotNetOpenAuth.AspNet source code where this class is used so I'm unsure of what source would need to be pulled into my code in order to enable the functionality I need.
