  For an application of mine, I analyze the sentiment of articles, using NLTK, to display sentiment trends. But right now all articles weigh the same amount. This does not show a very accurate picture because some articles have a higher impact on the internet than others. For example, a blog post from some unknown blog should not weigh the same amount as an article from the New York Times. How can I determine their impact?

A handful of people commented that this generalisation was bad because it made the solution more complex. One such comment is voted +8. Putting aside the hard-to-explain voting effects on SO, there are two types of complexity to be considered here: Runtime complexity, i.e. how fast does the code run Code complexity, i.e. how difficult is the code to read and understand The question of runtime complexity is something that requires a better understanding of the input data today and what it might look like in the future, taking the various growth factors into account where necessary. The question of code complexity is the one I'm interested in here. By generalising the solution, we avoid having to rewrite it in the event that the constraints change. However, at the same time it can often result in complicating the code. In the reference question, the code for NxN is easy to understand for any competent programmer, but the NxM case (unless documented well) could easily confuse someone coming across the code for the first time. So, my question is this: Where should you draw the line between generalising and keeping the code easy to understand?

  I need to parallelize a library through the use of a graphic accelerator. I have had no trouble doing similar work on Linux but I am struggling with using Visual Studios 2012. I can't figure out how to do analogs to simple things. I can't figure out how to do simple things like specifying linkage, libraries, and include files. I need to move quickly from understanding the Linux build system to the Windows build system. Does anybody have a guide or some advice on moving from Linux to Visual Studios development? I feel like I am crawling through a labyrinth of menus. With frequent dead ends saying that this feature has moved to another place. Also this code must build with VS2012.

• Installed LibreOffice 4 with ppa, how do I remove it and go back to LibreOffice 3?

  EDIT This question is not at all a duplicate of How to downgrade from LibreOffice 4.0 to 3.6? The above mentioned question talks about downgrading from a specific version of LibreOffice, namely from 4.0 to 3.6. The solutions mentioned are not the ones I am looking for. They will work but I wanted a general solution without using PPA or downloading .deb files for from a higher version to a lower version. The above solutions suggest either downloading .deb files for LibreOffice 3.6 or adding repository for it. Furthermore, some of the answers put out-of-proportion~(applicable for the solution, however) stress on use of synaptic, not general command-line-solution. That made me wonder, at this very moment, if I take a fresh computer, and install Ubuntu 12.04, LibreOffice installation will work without a hitch. Then why I can not install LibreOffice in my 12.04 machine today from simple command line? This answer to my question, clarified everything. I need to use ppa-purge so that this resets all packages from a PPA to the standard versions released for my distribution. Basically it is like a way to restore my system back to the way it was before my installed packages from a PPA. This article further elaborates the idea. The above mentioned answer worked perfectly for me. Actually, this was an education for me since it taught me how do downgrade a package that was added via PPA. I had upgraded from LibreOffice 3 to LibreOffice 4 using the PPA. Now since I found that LibreOffice 4 has some issues, including handling my native language, I want to move back to LibreOffice 3. In order to accomplish this, I removed the LibreOffice config directory from my home and then purged LibreOffice from my machine. sudo apt-get purge libreoffice-* Then I removed the relevant PPA's using the sudo apt-add-repository --remove command. And then ran sudo apt-get update. Now, when I try to install LibreOffice using the command sudo apt-get install libreoffice I get an avalanche of output about unmet dependencies, something like, The following packages have unmet dependencies: libreoffice : Depends: libreoffice-core (= 1:3.5.7-0ubuntu4) but it is not going to be installed (snipped) If I dig the issue further, by using the command, sudo apt-get install libreoffice-core I get The following packages have unmet dependencies: libreoffice-core : Depends: libreoffice-common (> 1:3.5.7) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libexttextcat0 (>= 2.2-8) but it is not going to be installed Depends: ure (>= 3.5.7~) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. Could you please tell me how do I install LibreOffice 3 in my machine? I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

• Where to go after having a good grasp of a language?

  I have been programming as a hobby for the past few years now (most of high school and 1 year in cs in college) and although I've came to the conclusion that a career in CS isn't for me I switched over to math (which pairs what I love about programming with my interest in physical sciences) but I miss writing code. Recently I've had an interest in low-level programming. Understanding how compilers work, learning some basics of assembly language and trying to get out of my comfort zone. The problem is that since I've been out of the CS programs, I'm not faced with much opportunities to write code. I do intend to take a few CS classes in college (a lot of CS stuff is opened to math majors) but that won't come for until next year. So I ask: What are the steps to take in order to keep improving as a programmer once you're passed the basic steps? How do you find projects to keep you going? Beside my newly discovered interest in assembly language, I've been writing code in C and have been interested in FOSS. Thanks!

• Why does video playback lag/freeze when I go into full-screen mode?

  When I try to play my video files in SMPlayer it works fine but as soon as I switch to fullscreen mode(16:9) following thing happens: 1) Video starts lagging. 2) Audio and video goes out of sync. 3) CPU usage rises to ~50%. 4) SMPlayer starts to hang. My current SMPlayer configuration: 1)Video Output Driver = x11(slow) 2)Audio Output Driver = alsa(0.0-HDA Intel) 3)Cache = 8192 KB 4)Threads for decoding(MPEG-1/2 and H.264 only = 2 Things I tried solve this problem: 1) Tried changing video o/p driver to xv,gl. 2) Tried changing audio o/p driver to pulse. 3) Tried increasing cache size and also tried using nocache. Everything works fine on windows but I don't want to switch to windows just to play video files. My system config: Acer Aspire One D270 Atom N2600(Cedar Trail) 1.6GHz 2GB Memory Intel GMA 3600 graphics. Ubuntu 12.04 Kernel Release: 3.2.0-23-generic-pae Rest all things are working fine I have no resolution issue, bluetooth, wireless also working fine. • New website, plans to go large. How do you protect yourself?

  I'm planning to create a new site that (in hopes) will make it to a decent state of popularity and use. I have made sites before, but they weren't serious, with any intended purpose other than personal and friend use. I've never been able to find a solid post on good steps to protecting yourself, and your site/idea before you start. This site will always be free, and will not be bringing it any revenue by ads or whatnot, but I plan to in the future and would want to make I'm in the clear legally for one. Do you need to copyright anything? Or anything of the same concept as copyright? Do I make an LLC to operate it under? Apologies for this extremely poorly written question, basically I want to be both legal, and I want to make sure nobody can just rip my idea or name(s). • 14.04.1 LTS 64 bit from USB does not see my windows 7 when I go to install it

  I suppose this is as much a question as a heads up/warning 14.04.1 LTS only gave me the option of writing over everything on one of my windows 7 machines. If I'd pushed the wrong button and continued I would have lost some mighty important items. On a similar windows laptop I succesfully installed 14.04.1 LTS 32 bit alongside windows 7 rather easily ( and I dig it!), there was a prompt in that case that let me select to install it alongside my windows OS.Yikes, not in this case. This laptop was formatted NTFS, the Ubuntu usb pendrive I formatted fat32. could be a clue? It looks like there is an advanced install ubuntu, but I am not that advanced. I may try to use windows diskformat (What fdisk is gone?) to make a partition, then see if the ubuntu on my usb stick "sees" my windows. If anybody has a better plan let me know. Mahalo AHA!? p.s. its a SSD harddrive, perhaps thats the crux?

• How do you go about checking your open source libraries for keystroke loggers?

  A random person on the internet told me that a technology was secure(1), safe to use and didn't contain keyloggers because it is open source. While I can trivially detect the key stroke logger in this open source application, what can developers(2) do to protect themselves against rouge committers to open source projects? Doing a back of the envelope threat analysis, if I were a rogue developer, I'd fork a branch on git and promote it's download since it would have twitter support (and a secret key stroke logger). If it was an SVN repo, I'd create just create a new project. Even better would be to put the malicious code in the automatic update routines. (1) I won't mention which because I can only deal with one kind of zealot at a time. (2) Ordinary users are at the mercy of their virus and malware detection software-- it's absurd to expect grandma to read the source of code of their open source word processor's source code to find the keystroke logger.

• Best way to go for simple online multi-player games?

  I want to create a trivia game for my website. The graphic design does not have to be too fancy, probably no more advanced than a typical flash game. It needs to be secure because I want users to be able to play for real money. It also needs to run fast so users don't spend their time frustrated with game freezing. Compatibility, as with almost all online products, is key because of the large target market. I am most acquainted with Java programming, but I don't want to do it in Java if there is something much better. I am assuming I will have to utilize a variety of different languages in order for everything to come together. If someone could point out the main structure of everything so I could get a good start that would be great! 1) Language choice for simple secure online multiplayer games? 2) Perhaps use a database like MySQL, stored on a secure server for the trivia questions? 3) Free educational resources and even simpler projects to practice? • Test Doubles : Do they go in "source packages" or "test packages"?

  I've got a couple of data access objects (DefaultPersonServices.class, DefaultAddressServices.class) which is responsible for various CRUD operations in a database. A few different classes use these services, but as the services requires that a connection is established with a database I can't really use them in unit tests as they take too long. Thus, I'd like to create a test doubles for them and simply do FakePersonServices.class and FakeAddressService.class implementations which I can use throughout testing. Now, this is all good (I assume)...but my question relates to where I put the test doubles. Should I keep them along with the default implementations (aka "real" implementations) or should I keep them in a corresponding test package. The default implementations are found in Source Packages : com.company.data.services. Should I keep the test doubles here too, or should the test doubles rather be in Test Packages : com.company.data.services?

• Android Loading Screen: How do I go about using a stack to load elements, and the option of incrementing the size counter?

  I have some problems with figuring out what value I should put in the function: int value_needed_to_figure_out = X; ProgressBar.incrementProgressBy(value_needed_to_figure_out); I've been researching about loading screens and how to use them. Some examples I've seen have implemented Thread.sleep() in a Handler.post(new Runnable()) function. To me, I got most of that concept of using the Handler to update the ProgressBar, while pretending to do some heavy crunching work. So, I kept looking. I have read this thread here: How do I load chunks of data from an assest manager during a loading screen? It said that I can try using a stack it needs to load, and adding a size counter as I add elements to the stack. What does it mean? This is the part where I'm totally stumped. If anyone would provide some hints, I'll gladly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

  I recently upgraded my desktop mac to Precise and now can't get past the Ubuntu 12.04 splash page. The splash freezes with ubntu and the dots turning from white to orange forever. This is when I choose 3.2.0-generic from the grub menu. If I choose to load up older kernels, I still get the same thing. How can I make my computer finish booting again? I'm able to ssh into the machine and poke around, but the actual screen freezes at the splash. dmesg cat kern.log

• Should I go with Java or Python for my next project, after using PHP for 5 years? [closed]

  I have a full-time PHP job and I've been working with PHP for 5 years. I'm not willing to stay within this technology stack any more. I also worked with Java for 2 year before, so for me it looks more obvious to switch back to Java. However during last 5 years I was thinking about starting my own project, and now I think I have a very good SAAS idea. I'm completely confused what technology should I use for my project. I don't want to do it in PHP, and after reading many articles about rapid prototype development it seems to me that Django is the best option. I will continue to work full time for my current employer because I need to pay my bills and will work on my project in my free time. The concern I have is should I do my project in Java or Python? To be realistic there is always a risk when you are doing your own project/start-up. If I do it in Java in the worst case scenario I believe I will be able to find a full time Java position because I already have some experience in Java + recent experience in my project. With regards to Python it looks like it is not very popular in my area and salaries are much more lower then for Java. On the other hand I have a feeling that if I chose Java it will take me a way longer to finish my project. Guys I'm completely confused and I need your advice. P.S. I have moved to London 2 years ago from another country, local guys are very welcome to share their thoughts about London's job market.
