  • What is a modern software engineer's resume supposed to look like? [on hold]

    - by willOEM
My secondary education was primarily focused on the sciences (Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics), but now I work primarily as a software developer. I feel like my resume is totally inappropriate for my current career goals. Listing laboratory skills and accomplishments is not the same as listing software development skills and accomplishments. Oddly enough, I can't seem to find any resources for writing a engineer's resume online that aren't older than 5 years. GitHub and StackExchange profiles seem like as important resume items as anything, yet I don't know how to list them on a resume, or whether they are appropriate at all. So what is a modern software engineer's resume supposed to look like?

  • OpenStack + Ubuntu 12.04

    - by csgeek
Supposedly openstack can be installed easily under Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I've installed 32 and 64bit versions of Ubuntu Server with the same behavior. sudo tasksel check OpenStack hit Okay then I get a tasksel: aptitude failed (100) I've seen: http://www.hastexo.com/resources/docs/installing-openstack-essex-20121-ubuntu-1204-precise-pangolin and https://github.com/EmilienM/doc-openstack documentation, but I was hoping that since it was an LTS released and it was an option in tasksel that I was simply overlooking something obvious and it's just a matter of selecting the right checkbox and hitting okay. Too much wishful thinking?

  • How can I move a library inside a project's source tree and compiling static binaries?

    - by AbrahamVanHelpsing
How can I move a library inside a project's source tree and compiling static binaries? I want to use a particular tool that utilizes ANCIENT binaries without upgrading it's API usage. This way I can use the old libraries inside the single binary without wrecking the local host environment. I am on nix with netbeans/eclipse/code::blocks. I don't have a problem reading, just looking for a starting point. Any thoughts?

  • Two bugs you should be aware of

    - by AaronBertrand
In the past 24 hours I have come across two bugs that can be quite problematic in certain environments. LPIM issue with SetFileIoOverlappedRange Last night the CSS team posted a blog entry detailing a potential issue with Lock Pages in Memory and Windows' SetFileIoOverlappedRange API. I tweeted about it at the time, but thought it could use a little more treatment. The potential symptoms can vary, but include the following (as quoted from the blog post): Wide ranging in SQL from invalid write location,...(read more)

  • Which Git-based MIS to track workflow like Trac/Redmine but on console minimastically?

    - by hhh
Definitions MIS = management information system Some list about console based solutions here and some GUI-hacks here. Been fed up to install all those dependencies and no make -files with GUI -things so which console-based MIS would you suggest for a game-development team with graphical -repo, animation -repo, code -repo, stories -repo, etc ? P.s. I do use Git -submodules and the reason for repo -fragmentation is due to roles and size, certain repos such as graphic -repos tend to be quite large so better to keep them separate. Perhaps useful to readers interested about this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5881578/trac-vs-redmine https://github.com/jchris/sofa

  • Which Kinect package for PC takes care of motion tracking too?

    - by Extrakun
I am aware that there are opensource drivers for interfacing Kinect with the PC. My question is - the drivers at OpenKinect seems to provide only the images and depth data (from the reading of their wiki and API). It seems that you need to provide your own imaging solution. My question is - is there any all-in-one package, with samples/sources that not only grab images from Kinect, but also do the imaging/motion detection for you?

  • Using NPM to share resources between UI projects [on hold]

    - by guy mograbi
I am a UI team leader. My team has a lot of projects using different languages/technologies. In some parts we will rewrite (gradually - @Ampt this is for you) the application in order to enable new fresh technologies in and get old dinosaurs out. I am going to use Node Package Manager to set up an "all powerful" build/dependency manager. Can I use NPM to depend on a private github repository? Can I use NPM to depend on SVN? Will NPM play nice with quickbuild? Since each project might have a slightly different structure (think jetty/maven or play!framework) can I configure NPM to install some dependencies in different folders while still running it from the project's root? How can I, using NPM, get development resources out and build a packaged product? (like a war) Yes/No - is there a reason to use grunt? No discussion, just one liners.

  • Is a function plotter a legitimate use of eval() in JavaScript?

    - by moose
From PHP development I know that eval is evil and I've recently read What constitutes “Proper use” of the javascript Eval feature? and Don't be eval. The only proper use of eval I've read is Ajax. I'm currently developing a visualization tool that lets users see how polynomials can interpolate functions: Example Code on GitHub I use eval for evaluation of arbitrary functions. Is this a legitimate use of eval? How could I get rid of eval? I want the user to be able to execute any function of the following forms: a x^i with a,i in R sin, cos, tan b^x with b in R any combination that you can get by adding (e.g. x^2 + x^3 + sin(x)), multiplying (e.g. sin(x)*x^2) or inserting (e.g. sin(x^2))

  • Dump an arbitrary object To Html String

  • Are nested classes under-rated?

    - by Aaron Anodide
I'm not trying to say I know something everyone else doesn't but I've been solving more and more designs with the use of nested classes, so I'm curious to get a feeling for the acceptablilty of using this seemingly rarely used design mechanism. This leads me to the question: am I going down an inherintly bad path for reasons I'll discover when they come back to bite me, or are nested classes maybe something that are underrated? Here are two examples I just used them for: https://gist.github.com/3975581 - the first helped me keep tightly releated heirarchical things together, the second let me give access to protected members to workers...

  • Moving from a traditional in memory Java session to persistent storage sessions

    - by Benju
We have decided to take the plunge and move from using a typical java session provider in Tomcat/Jetty/etc to persisting everything to a central datastore. We are looking at using MongoDB for this. A few options come to mind... http://wiki.eclipse.org/Jetty/Tutorial/MongoDB_Session_Clustering This is nice because it will "auto-magically" persist our session to a Mongo installation. I am concerned however that we will not have fine grained control of what is happening. https://github.com/mattinsler/com.lowereast.guiceymongo/ GuiceMongo is interesting as it integrates with Guice. Perhaps we could persist everything via this ORM. Has anybody had to deal with this kind of move? It seems that moving from in memory to persistent session storage has a lot of gotchas.
