  • How to open AsyncTask from a Thread

    - by Abhishek
In my application I have created a SplashScreen that will b shown for 5 Seconds and after that it executes an if else case depending upon the values stored in the Preference file. If Preference file contains values then the AsyncTask code will run else the Login form will load. When i try to run my application. The thread is going to the Login form with the help of intent but when it comes to AsyncTask my application shows a force close error message. This is my SplashScreen code: public class SplashScreen extends Activity { @Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.splashscreen); Thread timer = new Thread() { public void run() { try { sleep(5000); } catch(InterruptedException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } finally { if(GoGolfPref.getEmail(SplashScreen.this)!=null && GoGolfPref.getPass(SplashScreen.this)!=null) { new LoadingScreen(SplashScreen.this, SplashScreen.this).execute("login_page", Login.url+GoGolfPref.getEmail(SplashScreen.this)+"/"+GoGolfPref.getPass(SplashScreen.this)); } else { Intent in = new Intent(SplashScreen.this, Login.class); startActivity(in); finish(); } } } }; timer.start(); } } This is the error I am getting: 08-29 07:25:58.040: E/AndroidRuntime(2365): FATAL EXCEPTION: Thread-10 08-29 07:25:58.040: E/AndroidRuntime(2365): java.lang.RuntimeException: Can't create handler inside thread that has not called Looper.prepare() 08-29 07:25:58.040: E/AndroidRuntime(2365): at android.os.Handler.<init>(Handler.java:121) 08-29 07:25:58.040: E/AndroidRuntime(2365): at android.app.Dialog.<init>(Dialog.java:101) 08-29 07:25:58.040: E/AndroidRuntime(2365): at android.app.AlertDialog.<init>(AlertDialog.java:63) 08-29 07:25:58.040: E/AndroidRuntime(2365): at android.app.ProgressDialog.<init>(ProgressDialog.java:80) 08-29 07:25:58.040: E/AndroidRuntime(2365): at android.app.ProgressDialog.<init>(ProgressDialog.java:76) 08-29 07:25:58.040: E/AndroidRuntime(2365): at com.pnf.gogolf.LoadingScreen.<init>(LoadingScreen.java:130) 08-29 07:25:58.040: E/AndroidRuntime(2365): at com.pnf.gogolf.SplashScreen$1.run(SplashScreen.java:32) How to get this working? Thanks in advance...

  • Drawable advantage over bitmap for memory in android

    - by Tabish
This question is linked with the answers in the following question: Error removing Bitmaps[Android] Is there any advantage of using Drawable over Bitmap in Android in terms of memory de-allocation ? I was looking at Romain Guy project Shelves and he uses SoftReference for images caches but I'm unable to search where is the code which is de-allocating these Drawables when SoftReference automatically reclaims the memory for Bitmap. As far as I know .recycle() has to be explicitly called on the Bitmap for it to be de-allocated.

  • Programmatically forward-lock an Android APK

    - by String
Doing a bit of advance research, and am stuck on the point summarized in the title. Namely, is there any way to forward-lock an APK installed programmatically, from another app? I've not come across anything beyond a hint in the following post: http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/msg/e39941389d4a4cf8 I can't see anything in the docs for PackageManager about forward- locking, but I readily confess that this is an unfamiliar area of the SDK for me. • webview showing white bar on right side

    - by Funkyidol
I am giving the following method call to my webview client embedded in my layout wv.loadData("<html><body bgcolor=\"Black\"></body></html>","text/html", "utf-8"); when i run this on the device, it shows a white vertical bar on the right side. I fixed the white thing by using webview.setBackgroundColor(Color.BLACK); but i want to remove it completely Following is my layout xml <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" > <TextView android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="@string/hello" /> <WebView android:id="@+id/wv1" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_width="fill_parent" /> </LinearLayout> Any suggestions??

  • Google Analytics Event Tracking and Variable visibility.

    - by Jeow
Hi guys, I have added to my html page the standard latest snippet to get google analytics to work: ... ... var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-15080849-1']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); (function() { var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true; ga.src = 'http://www.google-analytics.com/ga.js'; (document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0] || document.getElementsByTagName('body')[0]).appendChild(ga); })(); Now looking at the official 'event tracking guide' google says: add a snippet such as: pageTracker._trackEvent('Videos', 'Play', 'Gone With the Wind'); my question is: where is pageTracker coming from ? is it a global object in ga.js ? but if it is, why google did not tell me that they run a risk on breaking some script... I must be missing something any help really appreciated.

  • Google Translate API for iPhone - UTF8 problem in Chinese Translation

    - by Sky Chen
I've tested a workable translation API url by: http://translate.google.com/translate_a/t?client=t&text=%E5%BB%A3%E5%A0%B4&langpair=zh|zh-CN And it returns the correct result as the following which is in JSON format: {"sentences":[{"trans":"??","orig":"??","translit":"Guangchang"}],"src":"zh-CN"} However, when I try to use this function in XCode, I experienced this problem ... Here is my code: NSData *data; NSString *urlPath = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"/translate_a/t?client=t&text=%@&langpair=zh|zh-CN",qText]; NSURL *url = [[NSURL alloc] initWithScheme:@"http" host:@"translate.google.com" path:urlPath]; NSMutableURLRequest *request = [[[NSMutableURLRequest alloc] init] autorelease]; [request setURL:url]; [request setHTTPMethod:@"GET"]; NSURLResponse *response; NSError *error; data = [NSURLConnection sendSynchronousRequest:request returningResponse:&response error:&error]; NSString *result = [[NSString alloc] initWithData:data encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding]; //Problem's here. It returns nil. NSLog(result); Initially I guessed it's encoding problem so I tried other encoding as well (NSISOLatin1StringEncoding) , but I got wrong answer: {"sentences":[{"trans":"ã ","orig":"ã ","translit":"Tu¨¯ "}],"src":"zh-CN"} Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Thank you very much!

  • No resource type specified (at 'id' with value '@+id\st')

    - by Refaat
I'm new at android programming, I'm now trying to make some buttons, I configured these buttons using the following code: The MainActivity class : public class MainActivity extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ Button st,nd,center; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); st = (Button)findViewById(R.id.st); st = (Button)findViewById(R.id.center); st = (Button)findViewById(R.id.nd); } } and the XML Layout: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:background="@drawable/background" > <TextView android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="Hello from animation!!" /> <button android:layout_width="100dp" android:layout_height="50dp" android:text="1st half" android:id="@+id\st" /> // and the other two points defined the same way </LinearLayout> And i got that syntax error: error: Error: No resource type specified (at 'id' with value '@+id\st'). // and the same error with the other two buttons HINT: The R class is imported and accessible from the MainActivity class but it can't read R.id.

  • One site being on a subdirectory of another. Does google count this against you?

    - by Mick
I have created two similar websites (relating to monetary systems). So far, one appears to be loved by Google and the other hated. I'm struggling to work out why. This is a mystery to me because both sites were created by me with the same design philosophy, both in pure html. Both are packed to the rafters with references to, and information about, their respective subjects. One issue I'm worried may be the cause is to do with the location of the sites. I got a web hosting package from hostmonster.com for the successful one, but less liked one is just an "add-on" which sits on a subdirectory of the successful one. I wonder if Google somehow detects this and treats it as a less significant website? EDIT: Just to clarify, even though one site is an add-on that sits on a subdirectory of the other, the URL is arranged to look like it is a root. I.e. the unpopular site can be accessed directly with a simple www.myunpopularsite.com name, without specifying any subdirectory. EDIT: Just in case its important... say the popular site is called pop.com and the unpopular one unpop.com. In the webspace I've purchased, there is a directory called public_html. This is where I put the index.htm and all the other files of my popular site. When I purchased the add-on unpop.com. I made a subdirectory of public_html called unpop. It is within this "public_html\unpop\" that I place the index.htm and all the other files of my unpopular site. Typing www.unpop.com into the address bar of a browser links directly to the contents of "public_html\unpop\" and the user is not aware that this site is sitting on a subdirectory of another site. BUT if you type "www.pop.com/unpop" into the address bar of a browser you DO see the unpopular site.

  • why the difference in google search result using script for search and using a browser for search

    - by Jayapal Chandran
I wrote a code to find the position in google search result for a search keyword. I also did the same with the browser. Both the results are different. Let me explain in detail here. I have a website and i wanted to know on which page number my domain appears for a search string. Like when i search for 'code snippets' i wanted to find in google search on which page number a certain domain appears. I wrote a php code to search page by page starting from page 1 to page n. I did the same task using a browser. The script returned page 4 and when browsed i can see the domain appearing in second page. here is the search string i use in my code. /search?hl=en&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=code+snippets&start=0&btnG= and for each request i change the start=0 to start=1, start=2, etc... and in the response i will check whether my domain appears in it. any idea for this different in search results?

  • Empty APN list on your Android phone? Restart the phone to fix it

    - by Gopinath
Today I tried to connect to internet on my Google Galaxy Nexus running on 4.2.2 using Cellular Data connection and it failed. Tried reaching customer care representative to figure out why data connection is not working, but the robots (Interactive Voice Response systems) never allowed me to reach a human. After digging through the settings I found empty list of APN (Access Point Names) is the reason for not able to connect to internet. Not sure what caused APN list to vanish but I tried to create a new one that matches with the settings required for AT & T mobile. To my surprise I found that the newly created APN is also not shown in the APN list. Well there is something wrong with the phone – my APN’s are not shown as well as the newly created one is also not displayed. A simple Google search on this problem shown many forum discussions list and the solution to resolve the issue is to restart the phone. As soon as I restarted my phone the APN list is automatically populated and I’m able to connect to internet on my mobile.
