  • Does my fat-client application belong in the MVC pattern?

    - by boatingcow
The web-based application I’m currently working on is growing arms and legs! It’s basically an administration system which helps users to keep track of bookings, user accounts, invoicing etc. It can also be accessed via a couple of different websites using a fairly crude API. The fat-client design loosely follows the MVC pattern (or perhaps MVP) with a php/MySQL backend, Front Controller, several dissimilar Page Controllers, a liberal smattering of object-oriented and procedural Models, a confusing bunch of Views and templates, some JavaScripts, CSS files and Flash objects. The programmer in me is a big fan of the principle of “Separation of Concerns” and on that note, I’m currently trying to figure out the best way to separate and combine the various concerns as the project grows and more people contribute to it. The problem we’re facing is that although JavaScript (or Flash with ActionScript) is normally written with the template, hence part of the View and decoupled from the Controller and Model, we find that it actually encompasses the entire MVC pattern... Swap an image with an onmouseover event - that’s Behaviour. Render a datagrid - we’re manipulating the View. Send the result of reordering a list via AJAX - now we’re in Control. Check a form field to see if an email address is in a valid format - we’re consulting the Model. Is it wise to let the database people write up the validation Model with jQuery? Can the php programmers write the necessary Control structures in JavaScript? Can the web designers really write a functional AJAX form for their View? Should there be a JavaScript overlord for every project? If the MVC pattern could be applied to the people instead of the code, we would end up with this: Model - the database boffins - “SELECT * FROM mind WHERE interested IS NULL” Control - pesky programmers - “class Something extends NothingAbstractClass{…}” View - traditionally the domain of the graphic/web designer - “” …and a new layer: Behaviour - interaction and feedback designer - “CSS3 is the new black…” So, we’re refactoring and I’d like to stick to best practice design, but I’m not sure how to proceed. I don’t want to reinvent the wheel, so would anyone have any hints or tips as to what pattern I should be looking at or any code samples from someone who’s already done the dirty work? As the programmer guy, how can I rewrite the app for backend and front end whilst keeping the two separate? And before you ask, yes I’ve looked at Zend, CodeIgnitor, Symfony, etc., and no, they don’t seem to cross the boundary between server logic and client logic!

  • it means quick-select algorithm?

    - by matin1234
Hi, I have a question from my homework. I think my teacher needs an algorithm like quick select for this question is this correct? The question: Following a program (Subroutine) as a "black box" is given (for example, inside it is not clear and we do not even inside it) with the worst case linear time, can find the middle of n elements. Using this black box, get a simple linear algorithm that takes input i and find the element which its rank is equal to i (among the n elements) Thanks.

  • Accessing an object's fields without an active session

    - by Dave
I'm using Hibernate 4.0.1.Final. Is it possible to access an object's fields if that object has been loaded via the org.hibernate.Session.load(Class clazz, Serializable id) method and there is no active session? I use this code to access an object by id … protected Object find(Class clazz, Serializable id) { Object obj = null; try { startOperation(); obj = session.load(clazz, id); tx.commit(); } catch (HibernateException e) { handleException(e); } finally { session.close(); } return obj; } but if I have that object without an active session, like with this code … final Organization foundOrg = orgDao.findById(org.getOrganizationId()); System.out.println(foundOrg.getName()); I get this error on the "System.out" line … org.hibernate.LazyInitializationException: could not initialize proxy - no Session at org.hibernate.proxy.AbstractLazyInitializer.initialize(AbstractLazyInitializer.java:149) at org.hibernate.proxy.AbstractLazyInitializer.getImplementation(AbstractLazyInitializer.java:195) at org.hibernate.proxy.pojo.javassist.JavassistLazyInitializer.invoke(JavassistLazyInitializer.java:185) at org.myco.myproject.orgsclient.model.Organization_$$_javassist_0.getName(Organization_$$_javassist_0.java) at org.myco.myproject.orgsclient.dao.OrganizationDAOTest.testInsertSchool(OrganizationDAOTest.java:43) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke0(Native Method) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(NativeMethodAccessorImpl.java:39) at sun.reflect.DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.java:25) at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:597) at org.junit.runners.model.FrameworkMethod$1.runReflectiveCall(FrameworkMethod.java:44) at org.junit.internal.runners.model.ReflectiveCallable.run(ReflectiveCallable.java:15) at org.junit.runners.model.FrameworkMethod.invokeExplosively(FrameworkMethod.java:41) at org.junit.internal.runners.statements.InvokeMethod.evaluate(InvokeMethod.java:20) at org.junit.internal.runners.statements.RunBefores.evaluate(RunBefores.java:28) at org.junit.runners.BlockJUnit4ClassRunner.runChild(BlockJUnit4ClassRunner.java:76) at org.junit.runners.BlockJUnit4ClassRunner.runChild(BlockJUnit4ClassRunner.java:50) at org.junit.runners.ParentRunner$3.run(ParentRunner.java:193) at org.junit.runners.ParentRunner$1.schedule(ParentRunner.java:52) at org.junit.runners.ParentRunner.runChildren(ParentRunner.java:191) at org.junit.runners.ParentRunner.access$000(ParentRunner.java:42) at org.junit.runners.ParentRunner$2.evaluate(ParentRunner.java:184) at org.junit.runners.ParentRunner.run(ParentRunner.java:236) at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit4.runner.JUnit4TestReference.run(JUnit4TestReference.java:50) at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit.runner.TestExecution.run(TestExecution.java:38) at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit.runner.RemoteTestRunner.runTests(RemoteTestRunner.java:467) at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit.runner.RemoteTestRunner.runTests(RemoteTestRunner.java:683) at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit.runner.RemoteTestRunner.run(RemoteTestRunner.java:390) at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit.runner.RemoteTestRunner.main(RemoteTestRunner.java:197)

  • Using a custom form in a modelformset factory?

    - by jamida
I'd like to be able to use a customized form in a modelformset_factory. For example: models.py class Author(models.Model): name = models.CharField() address = models.CharField() class AuthorForm(ModelForm): class Meta: model = Author views.py def test_render(request): myModelFormset = modelformset_factory(Author) items = Author.objects.all() formsetInstance = myModelFormset(queryset = items) return render_to_response('template',locals()) The above code works just fine, but note I'm NOT using AuthorForm. The question is how can I get the modelformset_factory to use the AuthorForm (which I plan to customize later) instead of making a default Author form?

  • display values within stacked boxes of rowstacked histograms in gnuplot?

    - by gojira
I am using gnuplot (Version 4.4 patchlevel 2) to generate rowstacked histograms, very similar to the example called "Stacked histograms by percent" from the gnuplot demo site at http://www.gnuplot.info/demo/histograms.html I want to display the values of each stacked box within it. I.e. I want to display the actual numerical value (in percent and/or the absolute number) of each box. How can I do that?

  • "Push" linq vs reactive framework

    - by Benjol
(Once again exposing the depths of my ignorance here by combining two concepts which I haven't grokked) I read here about the Reactive framework being a 'Push' model compared to Linq's 'Pull' model. This reminded me of reading an article about 'Push' Linq. Is there really any similarity between these two 'frameworks'? UPDATE Since I asked this question, Jon Skeet has asked it too, here are his first and second impressions.

  • Javascript image copy protection

    - by Chris
Is there a way to protect your images from being copied, specifically their URL's. So that if someone were to try right click the image and copy the URL I could pop up an embed box, or perhaps specify my own particular copy code so that I dictate the terms of the copy? An alternate to this would be popping up a custom dialog box on right click with copy / embed options... How would one do this?

  • Flex Canvas child Randomly resizes

    - by BS_C3
    Hi! I have an application with a viewstack that contains all the components that need to be displayed. The navigation is defined in the main application. All the components are based on canvas. The main application looks like that: <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute" xmlns:components="components.*"> <mx:VBox width="1024" height="100%" horizontalCenter="0" verticalGap="0" backgroundColor="#FFFFFF"> <mx:Image id="header" verticalAlign="top" /> <mx:ViewStack id="body" horizontalCenter="0" verticalCenter="0" width="100%" height="100%"> <components:HomePage id="hp" width="100%"/> <components:CollectionSelection id="cs" width="100%"/> <components:SearchEngine id="se" width="100%"/> <components:SearchResult id="sr" width="100%"/> <components:Tray id="tr" width="100%"/> <components:Order id="or" width="100%"/> </mx:ViewStack> <mx:Image id="footer" verticalAlign="bottom" maintainAspectRatio="false" width="100%"/> </mx:VBox> </mx:Application> I'm getting a strange behaviour from the TRAY component. Here's the code for component Tray (I've only left the display info): <mx:Canvas xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"> <mx:Image id="bg" horizontalCenter="0" verticalCenter="0" width="100%" height="100%" maintainAspectRatio="false"/> <mx:HBox width="100%"> <mx:Button x="20" y="20" label="BACK"/> <mx:Spacer width="100%"/> <mx:LinkBar itemClick="linkbar_itemClick(event)" styleName="GLBLinkBTN" separatorColor="#FFFFFF" separatorWidth="1" > <mx:dataProvider> <mx:Object label="CLEAR"/> <mx:Object label="LOGOUT"/> </mx:dataProvider> </mx:LinkBar> </mx:HBox> <mx:VBox id="mainBox" horizontalCenter="0" verticalCenter="0" verticalGap="0"> <mx:HBox width="100%" height="50" backgroundColor="#60524D" verticalAlign="bottom" paddingBottom="5"> <mx:Label styleName="TRTitle" paddingLeft="15"/> <mx:Spacer width="100%"/> <mx:Label styleName="TRItems" paddingRight="15"/> </mx:HBox> <mx:HorizontalList id="hlist" dataProvider="{TrayData.instance.itemsCollection}" columnCount="{TrayData.instance.hlistColumns}" rowCount="1" itemRenderer="components.TrayItem" horizontalScrollPolicy="off" rollOverColor="#FFFFFF" selectionColor="#FFFFFF" horizontalCenter="0" verticalCenter="0" borderStyle="none" horizontalScrollPosition="{TrayData.instance.hsPosition}" /> <mx:HBox width="100%" backgroundColor="#E7DDDB" height="40" verticalAlign="middle" paddingLeft="20" paddingRight="20"> <mx:Box width="25" verticalAlign="middle" horizontalAlign="left"> <mx:Button id="leftBtn" /> </mx:Box> <mx:Spacer width="100%"/> <mx:Box width="25" verticalAlign="middle" horizontalAlign="right"> <mx:Button id="rightBtn" /> </mx:Box> </mx:HBox> </mx:VBox> </mx:Canvas> All the components are displaying properly. However, sometimes, randomly, the vbox "mainBox" in the tray component is not displaying as it should: the horizontallist shrinks and instead of fully displaying its items, I get horizontal and vertical scrollbars for each item... I'm currently trying to reproduce this behaviour (to get a print screen) but right know, it's working fine... -_-' As soon as I get it work as it shouldn't, I'll upload an image. Here's the code for the itemRenderer (just in case...): <mx:VBox xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" > <mx:HBox width="100%" paddingTop="0" paddingBottom="0" paddingRight="3"> <mx:Spacer width="100%"/> <mx:Box width="14" height="14" verticalAlign="middle" horizontalAlign="center"> <mx:Button width="8" height="8"/> </mx:Box> </mx:HBox> <mx:VBox paddingLeft="20" paddingRight="20" verticalGap="15" paddingBottom="15"> <mx:Canvas id="thumbnail"> <mx:Image id="thumbnailBG" /> <mx:Image id="thumbnailIM" /> </mx:Canvas > <mx:VBox width="100%" verticalGap="7"> <mx:HBox width="100%" height="13"> <mx:Label width="74" opaqueBackground="#ECE5E2"/> <mx:Label paddingBottom="5"/> </mx:HBox> <mx:HBox width="100%" height="13"> <mx:Label width="74" opaqueBackground="#ECE5E2"/> <mx:Label /> </mx:HBox> <mx:HBox width="100%" height="13"> <mx:Label width="74" opaqueBackground="#ECE5E2"/> <mx:Label /> </mx:HBox> <mx:HBox width="100%" height="13"> <mx:Label width="74"opaqueBackground="#ECE5E2"/> <mx:Label /> </mx:HBox> <mx:HBox width="100%" height="13"> <mx:Label width="74" opaqueBackground="#ECE5E2"/> <mx:Label /> </mx:HBox> <mx:HBox width="100%" height="13"> <mx:Label width="74" opaqueBackground="#ECE5E2"/> <mx:Label /> </mx:HBox> <mx:HBox width="100%" height="13"> <mx:Label width="74" opaqueBackground="#ECE5E2"/> <mx:Label /> </mx:HBox> <mx:HBox width="100%" height="13"> <mx:Label width="74" opaqueBackground="#ECE5E2"/> <mx:Label /> </mx:HBox> </mx:VBox> <mx:Button /> </mx:VBox> </mx:VBox> Your help would really be appreciated. • ASP.NET MVC, Webform hybrid

    - by Greg Ogle
We (me and my team) have a ASP.NET MVC application and we are integrating a page or two that are Web Forms. We are trying to reuse the Master Page from our MVC part of the app in the WebForms part. We have found a way of rendering an MVC partial view in web forms, which works great, until we try and do a postback, which is the reason for using a WebForm. The Error: Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster. The Code to render the partial view from a WebForm (credited to "How to include a partial view inside a webform"): public static class WebFormMVCUtil { public static void RenderPartial(string partialName, object model) { //get a wrapper for the legacy WebForm context var httpCtx = new HttpContextWrapper(System.Web.HttpContext.Current); //create a mock route that points to the empty controller var rt = new RouteData(); rt.Values.Add("controller", "WebFormController"); //create a controller context for the route and http context var ctx = new ControllerContext( new RequestContext(httpCtx, rt), new WebFormController()); //find the partial view using the viewengine var view = ViewEngines.Engines.FindPartialView(ctx, partialName).View; //create a view context and assign the model var vctx = new ViewContext(ctx, view, new ViewDataDictionary { Model = model }, new TempDataDictionary()); //ERROR OCCURS ON THIS LINE view.Render(vctx, System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Response.Output); } } My only experience with this error is in context of a web farm, which is not the case. Also, I understand that the machine key is used for decrypting the ViewState. Any information on how to diagnose this issue would be appreciated. A Work-around: So far the work-around is to move the header content to a PartialView, then use an AJAX call to call a page with just the Partial View from the WebForms, and then using the PartialView directly on the MVC Views. Also, we are still able to share non-tech-specific parts of the Master Page, i.e. anything that is not MVC specific. Still yet, this is not an ideal solution, a server-side solution is still desired. Also, this solutino has issues when working with controls that have more sophisticated controls, using JavaScript, particularly dynamically generated script as used by 3rd party controls.

  • translate database fields with rails

    - by fursie
hi I know about the built-in I18n in Rails, but how can I select a database field per locale? My model structure is something like this: title #default (englisch) title_de #(german) title_it #(italian) In my template I want to be able to write only <%= @model.title %> and should get the value in the right language. Is there a plugin or a solution to use different fields per different locale settings with a structure like mine?

  • Advanced Django query with subselects and custom JOINS

    - by Bryan Ward
I have been investigating this number theoretic function (found in the Height model) and I need to query for things based on the prime factorization of the primary key, or id. I have created a model for Factors of the id which maintains all of the prime factors. class Height(models.Model): b = models.IntegerField(null=True, blank=True) c = models.IntegerField(null=True, blank=True) d = models.FloatField(null=True, blank=True) class Factors(models.Model): height = models.ForeignKey(Height, null=True, blank=True) factor = models.IntegerField(null=True, blank=True) degree = models.IntegerField(null=True, blank=True) prime_id = models.IntegerField(null=True, blank=True) For example, if id=24, then the associated entries in the factors table would be height_id=24,factor=2,degree=3,prime_id=0 height_id=24,factor=3,degree=1,prime_id=1 the prime_id keep track of the relative order of the primes. Now let p < q < r < s all be prime numbers and a,b,c,d be positive integers. Then I want to be able to query for all Heights of the form id=(p**a)*(q**b)*(r**c)*(s**d). Now this is simple in the case that all of p,q,r,s,a,b,c,d are known in that I can just run Height.objects.get(id=(p**a)*(q**b)*(r**c)*(s**d)) But I need to be able to query for something like (2**a)*(3**2)*(r**c)*(s**d) where r,s,a,d are unknown and all Heights of such form will be returned. Furthermore, not all of the rows in Height will have exactly four prime factors, so I need to make sure that I am not matching rows of the form id=(p**a)*(q**b)*(r**c)*(s**d)*(t**e)... From what I can tell, the following MySQL query accomplishes this, but I would like to do it through the Django ORM. I also don't know if this MySQL query is the proper way to go about doing things. SELECT h.*,count(f.height_id) AS factorsCount FROM height AS h LEFT JOIN factors AS f ON ( f.height_id = h.id AND f.height_id IN (SELECT height_id FROM factors where prime_id=1 AND factor=2 AND degree=1) AND f.height_id IN (SELECT height_id FROM factors where prime_id=2 AND factor=3 AND degree=2) AND f.height_id IN (SELECT height_id FROM factors where prime_id=3 AND factor=5 AND degree=1) AND f.height_id IN (SELECT height_id FROM factors where prime_id=4 AND factor=7 ANd degree=1) ) GROUP BY h.id HAVING factorsCount=4 ORDER BY h.id; Any ideas or suggestions for things to try?

  • Is the design notion of layers contrived?

    - by Bruce
Hi all I'm reading through Eric Evans' awesome work, Domain-Driven Design. However, I can't help feeling that the 'layers' model is contrived. To expand on that statement, it seems as if it tries to shoe-horn various concepts into a specific, neat model, that of layers talking to each other. It seems to me that the layers model is too simplified to actually capture the way that (good) software works. To expand further: Evans says: "Partition a complex program into layers. Develop a design within each layer that is cohesive and that depends only on the layers below. Follow standard architectural patterns to provide loose coupling to the layers above." Maybe I'm misunderstanding what 'depends' means, but as far as I can see, it can either mean a) Class X (in the UI for example) has a reference to a concrete class Y (in the main application) or b) Class X has a reference to a class Y-ish object providing class Y-ish services (ie a reference held as an interface). If it means (a), then this is clearly a bad thing, since it defeats re-using the UI as a front-end to some other application that provides Y-ish functionality. But if it means (b), then how is the UI any more dependent on the application, than the application is dependent on the UI? Both are decoupled from each other as much as they can be while still talking to each other. Evans' layer model of dependencies going one way seems too neat. First, isn't it more accurate to say that each area of the design provides a module that is pretty much an island to itself, and that ideally all communication is through interfaces, in a contract-driven/responsibility-driven paradigm? (ie, the 'dependency only on lower layers' is contrived). Likewise with the domain layer talking to the database - the domain layer is as decoupled (through DAO etc) from the database as the database is from the domain layer. Neither is dependent on the other, both can be swapped out. Second, the idea of a conceptual straight line (as in from one layer to the next) is artificial - isn't there more a network of intercommunicating but separate modules, including external services, utility services and so on, branching off at different angles? Thanks all - hoping that your responses can clarify my understanding on this..
