  • Internet Explorer / Windows 7 does not want to show HTML file from local network drive

    - by Jaanus
Setup: I have Windows 7 running inside VirtualBox on Mac OS X host. I have a shared drive with some HTML files, that I am mounting as a local drive W: in Windows, from the VirtualBox server \VBOXSVR. I want to look at them with a browser in Windows. Chrome in Windows 7 opens and shows those HTML files just fine (file:///W:/welcome.html). But Internet Explorer does not, and shows this error instead of the files: Internet Explorer cannot display the web page What you can try: [button Diagnose Connection Problems] More information This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including: Internet connectivity has been lost. The website is temporarily unavailable. The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable. The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain. If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section. For the internet zone in the status bar, it shows: Internet | Protected Mode: On IE settings are a mystery to me, and I could possibly get it to work by tweaking IE settings, but I don't know which ones. How do I make IE show the same files that Chrome is happy to show? (Chrome showing them means that the files themselves are fine, there is something about the setup that just makes IE be a diva.)

  • Sharing soundcard to network.

    - by zerkms
Let's suppose I have a laptop (L) and desktop PC (D), both with Windows 7 onboard. It is SB X-Fi extreme soundcard with rather good 5.1 home theater connected. But it is not comfortable to watch video sitting on the sofa from my desktop (sofa is in the center of the room and D is in the corner), even though it is 23" monitor. So I'm watching everything from the laptop. So the question - is it possible somehow to "share" soundcard from D to L, so I will watch the video from notebook and listen the sound from the 5.1? L and D are connected via wi-fi (fast enough).

  • Accessing Network Printers from a Citrix Session:

    - by Harry
We have an application that uses Active Reports documents. You pass a document the UNC of the printer and away it goes. We have a group that runs this application within a Citrix session and the truly networked printers function perfectly but shared printers that work well outside of Citrix become unreachable. Printers do not need to be defined on the machine running the report for the system to work. There is something in the way Critrix passes the information to the destination UNC that I don’t understand.

  • Best way to troubleshoot intermittent network outages?

    - by Ben Scheirman
We have a Comcast 50/10 line into our office. We keep seeing very short but sometimes frequent drops in our internet service. It's enough to kick you off of skype and stop any websites from loading, which is obviously affecting our productivity. We've tried 4 different routers, we've tried moving everyone off of wireless and onto wired via a switch and so far nothing has helped. Right now we're on a Cisco SB WRP400-G1 router. Attached to the router is a 16 port switch going to the ports in all of the offices. We've moved to OpenDNS in the case that it was the comcast DNS servers going down. Today we tried putting the modem, router, and switch on a UPS to make sure it wasn't power fluctuations that was causing it. Every time we call Comcast, by the time they are here the internet is working fine. I'd like to somehow prove that the problem is with Comcast, so if that means plugging in a machine directly into their router and collecting data all day, I'm up for that. I just want to hear ideas on what tools to run and how to collect this data. I could just continuously ping google.com all day long but I'm not sure how valuable that data would be. Thoughts?

  • First programming language: PHP, Ruby, Python?

    - by Victor
I've been a Web developer for over 5 years and am looking to start building more complex Web apps. Currently, I know HTML/CSS/Javascript but I feel it's time to start learning something else. I work with a lot of applications based on PHP. I created a vBulletin forum on my own time and I would definitely want to build off of that since it has gained a bit of popularity. I also work with Wordpress quite often. All of the software I work with tends to be based on PHP but I hear a lot of people say Ruby or Python is better. Since I'm starting out, I really don't care which one I learn but I want to start right. Any recommendations for someone with HTML/CSS/Javascript knowledge but wants to branch out?

  • Network-Backup-Software with file versioning and web-interface

    - by dlang
Dear All! I would like to backup our business-data to a remote backup-server. We would like to set-up our own backup-server running on any operating system (windows appreciated) which comes with a web-interface, that enables to restore individual versions of one file. Because budget is limited, an open-source software or at least a cheap software is a must! Unfortunately I couldn't find even a single software, which fulfills the requirements of file versioning and web-interface for single file-restore. Do any of you have already set-up such a system? Best regards, Daniel Lang

  • My laptop can connect to every wireless network except fios

    - by going crazy
I have always been able to connect to every wireless router secured or unsecured wep or wpa. I had Fios installed and could not connect. Verizon suggested it was my computer and gave me an outside wirless drive to use, it worked. I got rid of fios and went back to comcast and threw out the drive, but now 2 years later, I am sitting at my friends house haveing the same problem. My tech savy friend told me it is a firewall setting or something in my antivirus software, but I disabled them both and still nothing works........Funny it is only FIOS

  • Best programming novel to take on holiday

    - by Ed Guiness
I am about enjoy a two week break in Spain where I expect to have lots of time for relaxing and reading. I normally read a lot of non-fiction so I'm looking for novel suggestions. If there is another Cryptonomicon out there I'd love to hear about it! UPDATE: In the end I took four books including Quicksilver. Quicksilver was fantastic and I look forward to continuing the series. I was disappointed with Gen X (Coupland) and Pattern Recognition (Gibson). Upon arrival I also found The Monsters Of Gramercy Park (Leigh) which was enjoyable though sad. Thanks for all the recommendations, I'm sure to return to this list when I have more free time.

I'm trying to clone/pull a repository in another PC using Ubuntu Quantal. I have done this on Windows before but I don't know what is the problem on ubuntu. I tried these: git clone file:////pc-name/repo/repository.git git clone file:////192.168.100.18/repo/repository.git git clone file:////user:pass@pc-name/repo/repository.git git clone smb://c-pc/repo/repository.git git clone //192.168.100.18/repo/repository.git Always I got: Cloning into 'intranet'... fatal: '//c-pc/repo/repository.git' does not appear to be a git repository fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly or fatal: repository '//192.168.100.18/repo/repository.git' does not exist More: The other PC has username and password Is not networking issue, I can access and ping it. I just installed git doing apt-get install git (dependencies installed) I'm running git from the terminal (I'm not using git-shell) What is causing this and how to fix this? Any help would be great! UPDATE I have cloned the repo on Windows using git clone //192.168.100.18/repo/intranet.git without problems. So, the repo is accessible and exist! Maybe the problem is due user credentials?

  • Programming time schedule for porting a program.

    - by Lothar
I'm working on a large program which has an abstracted GUI API. It is very GUI based, many dialogs and a few nasty features which rely heavily on the message flow of the GUI (correct sequences of focus/mouse/active handling etc.) - not easy to port I now want to port it from the currently used FOX Toolkit to native Cocoa/MFC. I give myself a timeframe until the end of the year but my main work will be to continue development work with the existing toolkit, but there is no planned release for end customers before both tasks are done. My question is how should i spend my time? Stop working on the main program and do a 90% port (about 3 month) of the GUI first Splitting everything into smaller sessions of one month each. Assigning Monday/Tuesday to the GUI project and the rest of the week for the app. Finishing the App first, then port. I think there are three arguments which i need to balance. Motivation, i want to see something going on on both projects Brain Input Overflow, both tasks require a lot of detail information in my brain and sometimes enough is just enough. I guess the porting is intervowen so porting would also require a lot of code changes in the existing code and the new code that will be written in the meantime.

  • Windows 7 VPN wont allow FTP, route FTP traffic through local network

    - by Rolf Herbert
I use a VPN on my windows 7 PC for privacy and currently route all my traffic through the VPN. This arrangement is fine and its plenty fast. Unfortunately the VPN does not allow any FTP traffic so when I am updating websites I have to disconnect the VPN and work through my local connection. This is annoying and cumbersome. I have read a little about split tunnelling but this is not quite what I need, and it often talks about 'internet' traffic which is not specific to certain IPs or ports. Is it possible to route traffic on certain ports through the local connection, or is it possible to route traffic on certain IPs through the local connection using stuff built into windows 7..? Thanks

  • Pros and Cons of C vs C++ programming

    - by Mohit Deshpande
I am trying to decide on whether I should learn C or C++. I come from a very object-oriented background of java and C#. I have heard that C++ is more object-oriented than C, BUT I have also heard that a C program compiles and runs faster than a C++ program. Please help me get the facts straight by giving pros and cons of BOTH points of views. (Points of views being C over C++, or C++ over C)

  • What router settings to use for wireless home network

    - by Question Overflow
While looking at the setting of my wireless router, I am bewildered by the array of options available. Despite searching on Wikipedia to try to understand the various acronyms, I am still clueless to decide what is the best setting to use although the default works fine. Rather than calling the internet service provider (ISP) to ask them the correct settings, I hope to learn more about the differences between some of the options listed below, so that I would be able to make a more informed decision from now onwards: PPPoE vs PPPoA LLC vs VC-Mux Bridge vs Routed In addition, I would also like to know the significance of the following MTU VPI VCI And whether or when I should manually specify DNS?

  • UDP sockets in ad hoc network (Ubuntu 9.10)

    - by Ekhiotz
Hi! I am using BSD sockets in Ubuntu 9.10 to send UDP packets in broadcast with the following code: sock_fd = socket(PF_INET,SOCK_DGRAM,IPPROTO_UDP); //sock_fd=socket(AF_INET,SOCK_DGRAM,0); receiver_addr.sin_family = PF_INET; //does not send with broadcast in ad hoc receiver_addr.sin_addr.s_addr = htonl(INADDR_BROADCAST); inet_aton("169.254.255.255",&receiver_addr.sin_addr); receiver_addr.sin_port = htons(port); int broadcast = 1; // this call is what allows broadcast packets to be sent: if (setsockopt(sock_fd, SOL_SOCKET, SO_BROADCAST, &broadcast, sizeof broadcast) == -1) { perror("setsockopt (SO_BROADCAST)"); exit(1); } ret=sendto(sock_fd, packet, size, 0,(struct sockaddr*)&receiver_addr,sizeof(receiver_addr)); Note that is not all the code, it is only to have an idea. The program sends all the data with INADDR_BROADCAST if I am connected to an infrastructure wireless network. However, if my laptop is connected to an ad-hoc network, it is able to receive all the data, but not to send it. I have solved the problem using the 169.254.255.255 broadcast address, but I would like to know what is going on. Thank you in advance!

  • Programming help Loop adding

    - by Deonna
I know this probably really simple but Im not sure what im doing wrong... The assignment states: For the second program for this lab, you are to have the user enter an integer value in the range of 10 to 50. You are to verify that the user enters a value in that range, and continue to prompt him until he does give you a value in that range. After the user has successfully entered a value in that range, you are to display the sum of all the integers from 1 to the value entered. I have this so far: #include <iostream.h> int main () { int num, sum; cout << "do-while Loop Example 2" << endl << endl; do { cout << "Enter a value from 10 to 50: "; cin >> num; if (num < 10 || num > 50) cout << "Out of range; Please try again..." << endl; } while (num < 10 || num > 50); { int i; int sum = 0; for (num = 1; num <= 50; num ++) sum = sum + num; } cout << endl << "The sum is " << sum << endl; return 0; } Im just not sure exactly what i'm doing wrong... I keep getting the wrong sum for the total...

Write a program to read in a file containing the names of the employ of a company and store them in an array of Strings named Employ []. Read another file containing the Salaries of each employ written in the same order and store them in another array of integers named salary[] (contents of both files are shown below). Finally create a file stating for example. Mr. XYZ receive $75,500.00 per year (Note that salary is stored as integer but displayed here as double with a comma separating thousands. This formatting needs to be done using DecimalFormat Class)

  • Best network tuning variables for a Linux proxy

    - by smarthall
What are the best settings to tune so that Linux can handle a very large amount of TCP connections such as would be seen by a proxy server or a webserver? I'm using Centos6 and squid and am seeing a large amount of TIME_WAIT connections backing up until finally the machine stops responding. The machine isn't loaded at the time, and is having trouble making ingoing and outgoing connections. I've had several suggestions of tuning /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_tw_reuse and /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_tw_reuse but they mention bad interactions with load balancers and NAT both of which are used in my situation.

  • Assembly Programming and Interrupt Handling

    - by nmr
I'm writing a program in assembly using MIPS architecture for a class, and I'm having trouble figuring out how to grab an input character by a user and store it in a register to process. The program would open a console, output a message, the user can then input a character and then this determines what is supposed to happen next in the program. Like I said, I'm having trouble figuring out how to grab the character so that I can act upon it in the program. thanks
