  • Prompt for user group when logging into OSX domain

    When a user is a member of more than one group, when logging in to a 10.6 machine, it shows a prompt asking for what group to apply settings for. We're using the groups to mount different shares, e.g. Production and Accounts, based on user membership. Often, a user is a member of more than one group, and needs all the drives available. The Open Directory server is running 10.6 also. Is there a way to skip this prompt and apply settings for all groups. I can foresee that there may be conflicts between group settings, but perhaps a priority can be set too? Or is this totally the wrong way to go about this?

  • Existing tables with binaries to use filestream

    I've got a few tables for which I want to use filestream storage. These tables already contain binary data and have rowguids. However at the time they were were created, the tables were not added to a filestream enabled filegroup. What is the best way to have these tables use filestream at this point? Do I need to drop + recreate the tables and migrate the data? Is there an easier way? The database already has filestream enabled and there are other tables which are using them.

  • How to find a user's (or mine) access rights on Windows Server 2008?

    I was given access to a Windows Server 2008 box and I need to check what all permissions I have on that box (if possible in the entire domain). I don't have access to domain controller and I don't want to write LDAP queries but just some GUI option or some command line stuff. Is there anyway? PS: I am not in to network administration, I am a BI developer. Pardon me if asked a stupid question.

  • SQL Server 2008 database Backup

    Hi guys, today I was trying to restore a database with a backup I had made previously on another computer, however I kept getting the following error message: the media loaded on "filepath" is formatted to support 2 media families, but 1 media families are expected according to the device specification I didn't look into it at the time, I just figured it was a bad backup and I'd redo it when I got home. So now I'm trying to do another backup, and I'm getting the above error message for that too. I did backup to a different location at one point, however that no longer exists now. Is there a way i can get passed this error and just do a fresh backup of the database? any pointers would be much appreciated :)

  • Throttling bandwidth on a per group basis

    I am wondering if it is possible to create a bandwidth shaping/throttling script that shapes traffic based on user group. That is, if user1, user2, are in user group group1, they will have 1mb/s download and 1mb/s upload, whilst if user3 and user4 are in group2, they will have 256kb/s download and 256kb/s upload. I've read a bit about this and I found some iptables and TC implementations of a per user solution, but I have not seen anything for a user group. Hopefully it can be simply implemented in form of a custom iptables rules and script running with TC or the like. Here is a script I was looking into that does a system wide throttle: http://atmail.com/kb/2009/throttling-bandwidth/ I assume it is possible to do user group throttling since it is possible for throttling on a per user basis.   • SQL Server 2005 Replication Subscription Expiring Warning

    This week one of my replication subscriptions expired because I wasn't getting any alerts saying that there was a login error (I've fixed those alerts and the error). What I'd like now is, in the case that this happens again, to be able to send an alert saying that a subscription is about to expire (ie, it will expire in 1 or 2 days). I have an alert set up for when a subscription expires, but this is after the fact. I've looked through sys.messages for any text that has "Expir" in it, but I haven't found an appropriate error code yet. Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction? Thanks.

    Hey guys, I have sql05 and my maintenance plan which backs up a database to an external storage SAN, has been failing every night. Here is my error: Executing the query "BACKUP DATABASE [master] TO DISK = N'\\192.168.x.x\vmbackup\server\dbbackup\master_backup_201004222300.bak' WITH NOFORMAT, NOINIT, NAME = N'master_backup_20100422230002', SKIP, REWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10 " failed with the following error: "Cannot open backup device '\\192.168.x.x\vmbackup\server\dbbackup\master_backup_201004222300.bak'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.). BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly. I googled this error and tried adding permissions to the backup device for network service as recommended at experts exchange, no dice. Does anyone have any ideas?

    I have setup a production server and a staging server. Whenever we are at the point in our release cycle where we want to begin testing on staging I want to copy the production DB over to our staging server. I have setup snapshot replication to do this and have setup the staging server to have a pull subscription to the production DB. I want my continuous integration server to be able to kick off this process. How do I programmatically trigger a snapshot to be created and replicated? If there is a way to trigger this process is there a way to know when it's finished?

  • Auto-response on a mail non universal group

    Four domain users are part of global security group [email protected] running on Windows Server 2008 Standard and Exchange 2007 as a mail non universal group. Our goal is to create an auto-responder rule, or template that fires at sender. I have created a mail-enabled public folder, with owner permissions for each group member. I have also set up a rule template (response) and I am a little unclear as to the send as permission set, or where to set that up. Can someone please tell me if I am on the right track? Will I have to do each Outlook client machine (whole group!) the same?

    I would like to list the group policies for local users on a machine I'm setting up. However, when I run gpresult /v /u localmachine\user I get the error that I do have to specify a server name, and when I run gpresult /v /s 127.0.0.1 /u localmachine\user I get the message user credentials for local system are ignored, and I get the group policies for the local administrator as a result. How do I get the settings for the users?

  • How can we recover/restore lost/overwritten data in our MSSQL 2008 table?

    I am in serious trouble and I am seeking professional advices here. We are using MSSQL server 2008. We removed primary key, replaced exiting data with new data resulted losing our critical business data in its child tables on MSSQL Server. It was completely human mistake and we didn't have disk failure. 1) The last backup file was a month ago which means it is useless. 2) We created Maintenance Plans to backup our database at 12AM everyday but those files are nohwere to be found 3) A friend of mine said we can recover from Transaction Logs. When I go to TaskRestore Transaction log is dimmed/disabled. 4) I checked ManagementMaintenance Plans. I can't find any restored point there. It seems that our maintenance plan hasn't been working. Is there any third party tool to recover lost/overwritten data from MSSQL table? Thanks a lot.

    I have an old system running MSSQL7. It takes about 10.5 seconds to create the table below and another 30 seconds to add the index. Is there anything I can do to decrease these times?   • trying to copy security groups to a user using dsmod group utility in AD

  • Scaling web application with SQL Server 2008 database

    I have a database which has 90% of read only tables. 10% of the tables has writable data. We need to scale the ASP.NET application.We need to add more users who will not be writing to the database. We are thinking of adding another server and routing the users who need read only access to that server. Is there a way to replicate just some tables to another database server. Since the 90% of data doesnt change, we don't want to setup any full database replication. Please advise.

    I have a little problem... I have this case: -2 server instances -2 Databases -1 Table (5 columns) From server 1 I created publication to replicate all columns of table I have in 1. DB From server 2 I created subscription to pull all columns from table which is in server 1 DB But now, I need to publicate one columns of same table from server 2 to server 1 and also it has to be in same DB... I tried with using logic and creating publication for server 2 and subscription on server 1 but there is error appearing "You have selected the Publisher as a Subscriber and entered a subscription database that is the same as the publishing database. Select another subscription database." I hope someone understood my problem and have an answer for me, thanks in advance... p.s. Ask for more info if you need ...

  • Listing common SQL Code Smells.

    Once you’ve done a number of SQL Code-reviews, you’ll know those signs in the code that all might not be well. These ’Code Smells’ are coding styles that don’t directly cause a bug, but are indicators that all is not well with the code. . Kent Beck and Massimo Arnoldi seem to have coined the phrase in the "OnceAndOnlyOnce" page of www.C2.com, where Kent also said that code "wants to be simple". Bad Smells in Code was an essay by Kent Beck and Martin Fowler, published as Chapter 3 of the book ‘Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code’ (ISBN 978-0201485677) Although there are generic code-smells, SQL has its own particular coding habits that will alert the programmer to the need to re-factor what has been written. See Exploring Smelly Code   and Code Deodorants for Code Smells by Nick Harrison for a grounding in Code Smells in C# I’ve always been tempted by the idea of automating a preliminary code-review for SQL. It would be so useful to trawl through code and pick up the various problems, much like the classic ‘Lint’ did for C, and how the Code Metrics plug-in for .NET Reflector by Jonathan 'Peli' de Halleux is used for finding Code Smells in .NET code. The problem is that few of the standard procedural code smells are relevant to SQL, and we need an agreed list of code smells. Merrilll Aldrich made a grand start last year in his blog Top 10 T-SQL Code Smells.However, I'd like to make a start by discovering if there is a general opinion amongst Database developers what the most important SQL Smells are. One can be a bit defensive about code smells. I will cheerfully write very long stored procedures, even though they are frowned on. I’ll use dynamic SQL occasionally. You can only use them as an aid for your own judgment and it is fine to ‘sign them off’ as being appropriate in particular circumstances. Also, whole classes of ‘code smells’ may be irrelevant for a particular database. The use of proprietary SQL, for example, is only a ‘code smell’ if there is a chance that the database will have to be ported to another RDBMS. The use of dynamic SQL is a risk only with certain security models. As the saying goes,  a CodeSmell is a hint of possible bad practice to a pragmatist, but a sure sign of bad practice to a purist. Plamen Ratchev’s wonderful article Ten Common SQL Programming Mistakes lists some of these ‘code smells’ along with out-and-out mistakes, but there are more. The use of nested transactions, for example, isn’t entirely incorrect, even though the database engine ignores all but the outermost: but it does flag up the possibility that the programmer thinks that nested transactions are supported. If anything requires some sort of general agreement, the definition of code smells is one. I’m therefore going to make this Blog ‘dynamic, in that, if anyone twitters a suggestion with a #SQLCodeSmells tag (or sends me a twitter) I’ll update the list here. If you add a comment to the blog with a suggestion of what should be added or removed, I’ll do my best to oblige. In other words, I’ll try to keep this blog up to date. The name against each 'smell' is the name of the person who Twittered me, commented about or who has written about the 'smell'. it does not imply that they were the first ever to think of the smell! Use of deprecated syntax such as *= (Dave Howard) Denormalisation that requires the shredding of the contents of columns. (Merrill Aldrich) Contrived interfaces Use of deprecated datatypes such as TEXT/NTEXT (Dave Howard) Datatype mis-matches in predicates that rely on implicit conversion.(Plamen Ratchev) Using Correlated subqueries instead of a join   (Dave_Levy/ Plamen Ratchev) The use of Hints in queries, especially NOLOCK (Dave Howard /Mike Reigler) Few or No comments. Use of functions in a WHERE clause. (Anil Das) Overuse of scalar UDFs (Dave Howard, Plamen Ratchev) Excessive ‘overloading’ of routines. The use of Exec xp_cmdShell (Merrill Aldrich) Excessive use of brackets. (Dave Levy) Lack of the use of a semicolon to terminate statements Use of non-SARGable functions on indexed columns in predicates (Plamen Ratchev) Duplicated code, or strikingly similar code. Misuse of SELECT * (Plamen Ratchev) Overuse of Cursors (Everyone. Special mention to Dave Levy & Adrian Hills) Overuse of CLR routines when not necessary (Sam Stange) Same column name in different tables with different datatypes. (Ian Stirk) Use of ‘broken’ functions such as ‘ISNUMERIC’ without additional checks. Excessive use of the WHILE loop (Merrill Aldrich) INSERT ... EXEC (Merrill Aldrich) The use of stored procedures where a view is sufficient (Merrill Aldrich) Not using two-part object names (Merrill Aldrich) Using INSERT INTO without specifying the columns and their order (Merrill Aldrich) Full outer joins even when they are not needed.
