  • Deploying 32 and 64 bit COM objects on 64 bit machine from one VS setup project MSI.

    I have a Shell Namespace Extension C++ COM DLL that must have both a 32 bit and 64 bit version installed on a 64 bit machine, because when 32 bit applications perform a file- open the dialog that is presented is a 32 bit shell. The problem is that both my 32 bit and 64 bit COM objects have the same progid and the VS setup project will throw an error when including two files with the same progid. How do I get around this issue if I want to maintain the same code for both 32 and 64 bit? Currently I just have two different MSI's (32 and 64) and they both must be ran on the 64 bit machine.

I find it annoying that I have to add using System.Diagnostics to the source code in order to type Debug.WriteLine.... I checked under project properties, but I cannot find the References tab that allows me to add namespaces to Imported Namespaces. Where do I find this in C#? Also, why can't I do this in C#?   • Problem wit MDAC when trying to compile in VS2008 using x64 bit target platform

    I am trying to compile an 32 bit application. I am aware of problems with it but that is why its being compiled on 64 bit version. I am hanging at this problem. Application uses lots of sql stuff. In sqltypes.h file: (provided by MDAC) #ifdef _WIN64 typedef INT64 SQLLEN; typedef UINT64 SQLULEN; typedef UINT64 SQLSETPOSIROW; #else For some reason when its compiled on 32 bit platform it works great But when I try building it on 64 it goes berserk. Error 61 error C2146: syntax error : missing ';' before identifier 'SQLLEN' ..\external\microsoft sdk\include\sqltypes.h 50 It does not recognize INT64, UINT64. Is there something I need to enable so it will work under 64 build process? Missing some #include or #define? Any help would be great Thanks

    Hello everyone The question is actually pretty self explanatory but I will further clarify it. I am building a simple application to show a load [file] for 5 different types of [files]. So all these 5 forms will have similar GUI elements such as a listbox and a load button with a small textbox/label to show the summary of the [file]'s information. My desired effect is something like visual studio's C# template for Inherited User controls or Inherited forms. I already heavily googled the concept to look for a C++ visual studio template to the trick but I couldn't find it. The word [file] is in brackets because open file dialogue will not the trick as this list of files to select form comes form an SQL server. Thanks a lot!

    I need a function, but cannot seem to get it quite right, I have looked at examples here and elsewhere and cannot seem to get this just right, I need an optional item to be included in my query, I have this query (which works): SELECT TOP 100 PERCENT SKU, Description, LEN(CONVERT(VARCHAR (1000),Description)) AS LenDesc FROM tblItem WHERE Title = @Title AND Manufacturer = @Manufacturer ORDER BY LenDesc DESC This works within a Function, however the Manufacturer is Optional for this search - which is to find the description of a similar item, if none is present, the other query is: SELECT TOP 100 PERCENT SKU, Description, LEN(CONVERT(VARCHAR (1000),Description)) AS LenDesc FROM tblItem WHERE Title = @Title ORDER BY LenDesc DESC Which is missing the Manufacturer, how to I get my function to use either query based on the Manufacturer Value being present or not. The reason is I will have a function which first checks an SKU for a Description, if it is not present - it uses this method to get a Description from a Similar Product, then updates the product being added with the similar product's description.   • Which language should I pick up: VB.Net or C#

    I'm looking to pick up either C# or VB.Net. I'd done a fair bit of VB6 programming in the past. I'm looking at getting the book, Visual Basic .NET or C#, Which to Choose? but I'm hoping that someone has read it, or used both languages and can offer advice. Should I just RTFB? Edit: Anders Sandvig raised a valid question. I'm intending to develop ActiveX applications that will be served through IE. Edit: Given that the functionality is pretty close and my favored approach to learning is to "just build it" and solve problems by looking it up on the internet, I've decided that the choice of language will be based on how easy it is to learn it. I looked around and found sites like C# Corner that supports my approach. Personal note: I wish I could also select Seb Nilsson's response as an accepted answer as well. Thanks guys for your input! Alright, then! I admit, theoretically, this topic is subjective; but a quick tally of answers seems to skew votes heavily in C#'s favor. Anyway, I'm really after experiences like what Keith's alluding to. I'm hoping he'll return to this topic and drop us a few more gems.

  • Different ways to query this search in SQL?

    I am teaching myself MS-SQL and I am trying to find different ways to find the Count of Paid and Unpaid Claims for 2012 grouped by Region from these 3 tables. If there is a returned date, the claim is unpaid if the returned date is null then the claim is paid. I will attach the code I have ran, but I am not sure if there are better ways to do it. Thanks.     I am working on a large project, and one of my tasks is to remove possible memory leaks. In my code, I have noticed several IDisposable items not being disposed of, and have fixed that. However, that leads me to a more basic question, how do I find all classes used in my project that implement IDisposable? (Not custom created classes by normal Library classes). I have already found one less-than-obvious class that implements IDisposable ( DataTable implements MarshalByValueComponent, which inherits IDisposable). Right now, I am manually checking any suspected classes by using MSDN, but isn't there some way through which I can automate this process?

On that post I saw an screen shot of SSMS with images in the results. How is this done? I have images in my database (PNG files that are serialized via memory stream), but I just see numbers when I select the image column.

From table1 Join table2 on table1pkey=table2fkey Where MyDynamicString <> table2.someotherfield I know table2.someotherfield is not equal to the dynamic string. However, when I replace MyDynamicString in the Where clause with the full left(left(etc.. function, it works as expected. Can I not reference this string later in the query? Do I have to build it using the left(left(etc.. function each time in the where clause?

    I recently reinstalled my development machine and went from 32 bit Windows Vista to 64 bit Windows 7. I'm running VS2008. Some of my .NET applications still use J#, which now causes problems. The program still runs, but when I want to deploy it (I'm using a setup project to create a .msi), I get this error: "Visual Studio registry capture utility has encountered a problem" How can I fix this? This error does not occur with other programs (those written purely in C#).
