  • Boot failure after update and system crash 11.10

    I'm using: Dell XPS M1330 laptop, Ubuntu 11.10 32bits, single boot (only Linux OS), Virtualbox (with Windows XP on virtual machine). System crashed while working with a very heavy image on GIMP (and Virtualbox was on). During the same session, I made an automatic system update, but don't know what was exactly updated. After the crash the system doesn't boot. Always freezes on terminal screen but at different stages, ""Starting CUPS printing spooler/server", "Checking battery state", "mountall: plymouth command failed", etc. Sometimes indicates [failed] in some of the processes and sometimes they're all [ok]. Did a Boot info summary with boot-repair and gave me this report http://paste.ubuntu.com/1050743/ This is not a new install, have been using it for almost 6 months...though since last month it couldn't halt..it started shutting down and stopped at black screen with fan on and on/off light still on (I used to finish the shutdown process by forcing halt with a long-press of the power button). I don't know if these has anything to do with the boot failure. Is there anyway I can solve this issue (the boot failure) or make some sort of system check to find out what is the cause of the problem?     From any other PC doing SSH to my Ubuntu 11.10,is failing.   • Use 3 monitors w/built-in intel adapter + two old nvidia PCI cards on 10.10?

    I'd like to move from windows with my current workstation. The only thing holding me back is that I have 3 monitors connected to the system and I really take advantage of the real estate when working. I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on the system and one of the monitors is up and running just fine. This monitor is connected to the built-in Intel adapter. I also have two old nVidia GeForce4 MX 4000 (nv19pl) cards in my two PCI slots with two monitors connected to them respectively. I installed the legacy (and proprietary) nVidia drivers (the nvidia-96 package) that claims to support these old cards. Now the question is how to get X configured to use all adapters (using two different drivers) so I can use all three monitors (and is this even possible)? From what I've read, it looks like I'll have to write an xorg.conf file since the nVidia driver doesn't support the auto-magic configuration supported by other drivers. On this site: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config it says that on 10.10 I just need to write an xorg.conf "containing only those sections and options that you need to override Xorg's autoconfigurated settings". So, does this mean I can get away with only including the nVidia-specific configuration stuff and all else will get auto-configured? Or, will providing a config with a "Device" section overrule the auto-magic from detecting/using the Intel adapter? I ran the included nvidia-xconfig to generate a basic, nVidia-specific xorg.conf but I'm hesitant to reboot with it in place, suspecting I'll have a screwed up display. Also, is there any way (any tool or command) to generate an xorg.conf from the current, auto-configured running state of an X session? If I have to write a full, complete config, I'd rather start with one that includes everything that's been auto-detected thus far (and merge it with my nVidia version). Anyhow, any info and thoughts are greatly appreciated (as are answers).

  • Macedonian Code Camp 2011

    Autumn was filled with lot of conferences, events, speaking engagements and many interesting happenings in Skopje, Macedonia. First at October 20, I was speaking at Microsoft Vizija 9 on topic ASP.NET MVC3 and Razor. One week ago, November 15 I was speaking for first time on topic not related to web development (but still deployment of web apps was part of the demos) on topic “Cloud Computing – Windows Azure” at Microsoft BizSpark Bootcamp. The next event, which is the biggest event by the number of visitors and number of tracks is the Code Camp 2011 event. After we opened the registrations for the event, we sold out (free) 600 tickets in the first 15 hours! We all got astonished by the extremely big number of responses we’ve got… In this event, I can freely say that we expect about 700 attendees to come, and we already have 900+ registered. The event will be held at Saturday, 26 November 2011. At Code Camp 2011, I will speak on topic ASP.NET MVC Best Practices. There are many interesting things to say on this presentation, I will mainly focus on Tips, Tricks, Guidelines and other Practices that I have been using in real-life projects developed by using ASP.NET MVC Framework, with special focus on ASP.NET MVC3 and the next release, ASP.NET MVC4 Developer Preview. There are big number of known local and regional speakers, including 7 MVPs.   • Cannot FTP without simultaneous SSH connection?

    I'm trying to set up an old box as a backup server (running 10.04.4 LTS). I intend to use 3rd party software on my PC to periodically connect to my server via FTP(S) and to mirror certain files. For some reason, all FTP connection attempts fail UNLESS I'm simultaneously connected via SSH. For example, if I use putty to test the connection to port 21, the system hangs and times out. I get: 220 Connected to LeServer USER lucas 331 Please specify the password. PASS [password] <cursor> However, when I'm simultaneously logged in (in another session) everything works: 220 Connected to LeServer USER lucas 331 Please specify the password. PASS [password] 230 Login successful. Basically, this means that my software will never be able to connect on its own, as intended. Maybe it's allowing only established connections? I don't think that's how I set it up, but maybe?   • I spoke at SQL Saturday #77 and all I got was this really awesome speaker's shirt!

    Yeah, it was 2 weeks ago, but I'm finally blogging about something! I presented Revenge: The SQL! at SQL Saturday #77 in Pensacola on June 4.  The session abstract is here, and you can download the slides from that page too.  You can see how I look in the speaker's shirt here. Overall it went pretty well.  I discovered a new bit of evil just that morning and in a carefully considered, agonizing decision-making process that was full documented, tested, and approved…nah, I just went ahead and added it at the last minute.  Which worked out even better than (not) planned, since it screwed me up a bit and made my point perfectly.  I had a few fans in the audience, and one of them recorded it for blackmail material posterity. I'd like to thank Karla Landrum (blog | twitter) and all the volunteers for putting together such a great event, and for being kind enough to let me present. (Note to Karla: I'll get the next $100 to you as soon as I can.  Might need a few extra days on the next $100.)     I recently wrote about the Life Insurance Conference held in Washington, DC last month. This week I was both an attendee and guest speaker the 13th Annual Future of Life Assurance Conference held at The Guoman Tower in London, UK. It's amazing that these two conferences were held on opposition sides of the Atlantic Ocean and addressed many of the same session topics and themes. Insurance is certainly a global industry! This year's conference was attended by many of the leading carriers and CEOs in the UK and across Europe.The sessions included a strong lineup of keynote speakers and panel discussions from carriers such as Legal & General, Skandia, Aviva, Standard Life, Friends Provident, LV=, Zurich UK, Barclays and Scottish Life. Sessions topics addressed a variety of business and regulatory issues including: Ensuring a profitable future Key priorities in regulation The future of advice The impact of the RDR on distribution Bancassurance Gaining control of the customer relationship Revitalizing product offerings In addition, Oracle speakers (Glenn Lottering and myself) led specific sessions on gearing up for Solvency II and speeding product development through adaptive rules-based systems. The main themes that played throughout many of the sessions included: change is here, focusing on customers, the current economic crisis has been challenging and the industry needs to get back to the basics and simplify - simplify - simplify.     …I’m becoming more of an addict of writing about my experiences, here in Kolkata! Today we started a bit of late at around 8 AM, did our breakfast and reached in class a bit late at around 9:50 AM, and here goes the surprise…. Today we had two lectures on “Managing Self” and two lectures on “Sustainable Development and Climate Change” (SDCC). Some of us got few self discipline lessons the moment they entered class and asked to “get out” :D So frankly speaking it was a nostalgic moment, which reminded us of Collage ;) We did a FIRO-B test as and got very good tips on managing ourselves and differentiate between “manager” and “leader” After the lunch we had our session on SDCC, in which the prof started by explaining “Credit Crisis”, and moved on to Sustainable Development and few great examples from industry and life~! After the class we went for shopping at Garihat Market, we ate Pani Puri and Moodi :P ..one more surprise…my room got flooded with lot of my new ePBM friends to take the copy of the pictures and we did lot of chit chat around anything and everything :D …so far so good…it’s an amazing experience for me and hopefully for others….who came out of their daily chores and went back to the nostalgic lanes of friendship, learning and most importantly “Happyness” ~~~ Cheers, ram :) EPBM 14 pics : http://epbm14.shutterfly.com/pictures

  • SQL SERVER – Difference between COUNT(DISTINCT) vs COUNT(ALL)

    This blog post is written in response to the T-SQL Tuesday hosted by Jes Schultz Borland. Earlier today, I was presenting a 45-minute session at the Community College about “The Beginning SQL Server Database”. One of the students asked me the following question. What is the difference between COUNT(DISTINCT) vs COUNT(ALL)? I found this question from the student very interesting. He seems to have read the documentation (Book Online) and was then asking me this question. I always carry laptop which has SQL Server installed. I quickly opened it and ran the following script. After looking at the result, I think it was clear to everybody. Here is the script: SELECT COUNT([Title]) Value FROM [AdventureWorks].[Person].[Contact] GO SELECT COUNT(ALL [Title]) ALLValue FROM [AdventureWorks].[Person].[Contact] GO SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT [Title]) DistinctValue FROM [AdventureWorks].[Person].[Contact] GO The above script will give me the following results. You can clearly notice from the result set that COUNT (ALL ColumnName) is the same as COUNT(ColumnName). The reality is that the “ALL” is actually  the default option and it needs not to be specified. The ALL keyword includes all the non-NULL values. I know this is very simple and may be it does not change how we work; however looking at the whole angle, I really enjoyed the question. Next Tuesday is of course Election Day so you have to make sure you vote early in order to get over to CMAP for the 7:00PM presentation. I will be co-presenting this talk with my 5th grade son. Here is the abstract: Have you ever wanted a way to teach your kid to code? For that matter, have you ever wanted to simply be able to explain to your kid what you do for a living? Putting things in a context that a kid can understand is not as easy as it sounds. If you are someone curious about these concepts, this is a “can’t miss” presentation that will be co-presented by Justin Michelotti (5th grader) and his father. Bring your kid with you to CMAP for this fun and educational session. We will show tools you may not have been aware of like SmallBasic and Kodu – we’ll even throw in a little Visual Studio and Windows 8!     I have deferred the post about how Sesame is built in favor of publishing a new update.This new release offers major features such as the ability to quickly filter and sort data, select columns, and create hyperlinks to OData. Filtering, sorting, selecting In order to filter data, you just have to use the filter row, which becomes available when you click on the funnel button: You can then type some text and select an operator: The data grid will be refreshed immediately after you apply a filter. It works in the same way for sorting. Clicking on a column will immediately update the query and refresh the grid.Note that multi-column sorting is possible by using SHIFT-click: Viewing data is not enough. You can also view and copy the query string that returns that data: One more thing you can to shape data is to select which columns are displayed. Simply use the Column Chooser and you'll be done: Again, this will update the data and query string in real time: Linking to Sesame, linking to OData The other main feature of this release is the ability to create hyperlinks to Sesame. That's right, you can ask Sesame to give you a link you can display on a webpage, send in an email, or type in a chat session. You can get a link to a connection: or to a query: You'll note that you can also decide to embed Sesame in a webpage...   • Oracle Virtualbox does not open since upgrade

    After upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10, I have been unable to restart my Oracle virtualbox. jan@jan-System-Product-Name:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup sudo: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv: command not found Where do I go from here? Can anyone help, please? I tried to install virtualbox via these commands: echo "deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian $(lsb_release -sc) contrib" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/virtualbox.list wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtu...racle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add - sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install virtualbox-4.2 Attempts to install via package manager vbox would not start. These error reports are received: Because the USB 2.0 controller state is part of the saved VM state, the VM cannot be started.To fix this problem, either install the 'Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack' or disable USB 2.0 support in the VM settings (VERR_NOT_FOUND). Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole {db7ab4ca-2a3f-4183-9243-c1208da92392} I installed the extension pack, no change in result. I have added myself as user, but the error report says user must be added, when I redo add user, it says user is already added. The following outputs were also received:   Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Nuwe skelm. Implementation of the USB 2.0 controller not found! I cannot access the USB 2.0 setting to disable it. Where do I go from here, please?

  • Rails/Node.js interaction

    I and my co-worker are developing a web application with rails and node.js and we can't reach a consensus regarding a particular architectural decision. Our setup is basically a rails server working with node.js and redis, when a client makes a http request to our rails API in some cases our rails application posts the response to a redis database and then node.js transmits the response via websocket. Our disagreement occurs in the following point: my co-worker thinks that using node.js to send data to clients is somewhat business logic and should be inside the model, so in the first code he wrote he used commands of broadcast in callbacks and other places of the model, he's convinced that the models are the best place for the interaction between rails and node. I on the other hand think that using node.js belongs to the runtime realm, my take is that the broadcast commands and other node.js interactions should be in the controller and should only be used in a model if passed through a well defined interface, just like the situation when a model needs to access the current user of a session. At this point we're tired of arguing over this same thing and our discussion consists in us repeating to ourselves our same opinions over and over. Could anyone, preferably with experience in the same setup, give us an unambiguous response saying which solution is more adequate and why it is?

  • Ubuntu 12.04 LTS loops the login screen unless you login as Guest

    I am running a VMWare Player with a Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangloin as Guest on my Windows 7. Sometimes I get the shutdown blue screen error in Windows, this time it happened when I was running the Player. When I restarted everything Ubuntu gave the not so unfamiliar in this forum Login Loop in adminstrator login. I login and there's this black screen where I can only read: "piix4...smbus:0.0.0.07.3 Host Smbus controller not enabled" . When I go to the Prompt in root mode it fails to update and only upgraded, specially some plugins ( I think graphic plugins) which also appear in one an error message after quitting the prompt, but they´are successfully installed. They are not the error message. After that I have been working with the Fail/safe Mode recovery panel. When I try to update via Root I get errors like this: W:failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/release.gpg could not resolve 'extras/ubuntu.com There are 8 more like this referring to areas like: -archive/canonical.com -ppa.Launchpad.net -security.Ubuntu.com -Us.archive.ubuntu.com - release.gpg precise-updates/release.gpg precise_backport/release.gpg Final Message: some index files failed to download.....they have been ignored or old files are used. The black screens most of the time pass by too fast for me to pick up any information. But in general I think I have done everything I was able to in the recovery panel including updating network and graphic packages and recovering filesystem packages and the basic stuff ( I am a beginner regarding Linux ) in the root prompt. Now I am stuck in this screen with graphic options: - Run in low-graphics mode just for one session - Reconfigure Graphics - Troubleshoot the error - Exit to console login I am trying to choose to reconfigure graphics but the mouse disappears in the virtual machine screen and sometimes when options change ity´s only the first and last option. ut this happens from the blue without messages. This particular option menu is in the regular GUI style against a black screen in Terminal style. Really strange. Thanx in advance, all is welcome and appreciated.

  • NRF Week - Disney Store Tour

    Disney has created a real buzz at this year's NRF event. Yesterday morning we began the Oracle Retail Exchange program with a visit to the flagship Disney store in Times Square. Additionally Oracle made a key announcement with Disney  on Oracle Retail's Point of Sale implementation in 330 stores worldwide. Today   Disney's Steve Finney gave a super session on The Magic of Disney at the NRF Big Show. We also saw Disney making an exclusive news announcement about their plans for Global store openings at the Oracle trade show stand - with a little help from Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Disney Stores have been entirely reinvented since the company in 2008 took ownership after previously franchising the retail arm of the business. They have subsequently been a strong Oracle partner and technology has played a key role in their re imagination of the store environment. The new Imagination stores have a 20% higher footfall and margins are up 25%. The Disney brand is synonymous with magical and memorable experiences for children of all ages. The company is achieving a unique retail experience that delights children and shareholders alike! Technology is a key pillar in helping to deliver on both a strong operating model and a unique customer experience - the best thirty minutes in a child's day is their aim. Steve Finney this morning said their technology has to be as reliable as a theme park ride. Store experiences are much more enjoyable when there are short waiting times and children can interact with their favourite characters through magic mirrors, mobile point of sale, touch screens and custom animations that are digitally transmitted to stores globally. The Oracle Retail Point of Sale with iPad touch screens reduces check out times, stores customer data, ensures that promotions are delivered accurately and reduces losses. This means higher levels of guest conversion, increased availability and convenience for customers who want to check availability at other locations. Disney is a pioneer. At NRF's 100th show, we had the privilege of learning from a retailer using technology as a creative force to drive their business forward.
