• Appropriate design / technologies to handle dynamic string formatting?

  recently I was tasked with implementing a way of adding support for versioning of hardware packet specifications to one of our libraries. First a bit of information about the project. We have a hardware library which has classes for each of the various commands we support sending to our hardware. These hardware modules are essentially just lights with a few buttons, and a 2 or 4 digit display. The packets typically follow the format {SOH}AADD{ETX}, where AA is our sentinel action code, and DD is the device ID. These packet specs are different from one command to the next obviously, and the different firmware versions we have support different specifications. For example, on version 1 an action code of 14 may have a spec of {SOH}AADDTEXT{ETX} which would be AA = 14 literal, DD = device ID, TEXT = literal text to display on the device. Then we come out with a revision with adds an extended byte(s) onto the end of the packet like this {SOH}AADDTEXTE{ETX}. Assume the TEXT field is fixed width for this example. We have now added a new field onto the end which could be used to say specify the color or flash rate of the text/buttons. Currently this java library only supports one version of the commands, the latest. In our hardware library we would have a class for this command, say a DisplayTextArgs.java. That class would have fields for the device ID, the text, and the extended byte. The command class would expose a method which generates the string ("{SOH}AADDTEXTE{ETX}") using the value from the class. In practice we would create the Args class as needed, populate the fields, call the method to get our packet string, then ship that down across the CAN. Some of our other commands specification can vary for the same command, on the same version, depending on some runtime state. For example, another command for version 1 may be {SOH}AA{ETX}, where this action code clears all of the modules behind a specific controller device of their text. We may overload this packet to have option fields with multiple meanings like {SOH}AAOC{ETX} where OC is literal text, which tells the controller to only clear text on a specific module type, and to leave the others alone, or the spec could also have an option format of {SOH}AADD{ETX} to clear the text off a a specific device. Currently, in the method which generates the packet string, we would evaluate fields on the args class to determine which spec we will be using when formatting the packet. For this example, it would be along the lines of: if m_DeviceID != null then use {SOH}AADD{ETX} else if m_ClearOCs == true then use {SOH}AAOC{EXT} else use {SOH}AA{ETX} I had considered using XML, or a database to store String.format format strings, which were linked to firmware version numbers in some table. We would load them up at startup, and pass in the version number of the hardwares firmware we are currently using (I can query the devices for their firmware version, but the version is not included in all packets as part of the spec). This breaks down pretty quickly because of the dynamic nature of how we select which version of the command to use. I then considered using a rule engine to possibly build out expressions which could be interpreted at runtume, to evaluate the args class's state, and from that select the appropriate format string to use, but my brief look at rule engines for java scared me away with its complexity. While it seems like it might be a viable solution, it seems overly complex. So this is why I am here. I wouldn't say design is my strongest skill, and im having trouble figuring out the best way to approach this problem. I probably wont be able to radically change the args classes, but if the trade off was good enough, I may be able to convince my boss that the change is appropriate. What I would like from the community is some feedback on some best practices / design methodologies / API or other resources which I could use to accomplish: Logic to determine which set of commands to use for a given firmware version Of those command, which version of each command to use (based on the args classes state) Keep the rules logic decoupled from the application so as to avoid needing releases for every firmware version Be simple enough so I don't need weeks of study and trial and error to implement effectively.

• Trying to configure HWIC-3G-HSPA

  I'm trying to configure a couple of Cisco 1941 routes. The are both identical routers. Each as a HWIC-1T (Smart Serial interface) and a HWIC-3G-HSPA 3G interface. These routers are to be sent to remote sites. We have connectivity to one of the sites but if remote site A gors down we lose connectivity to remote site B. The HWIC-1T is the primary WAN interface using frame relay joining the two remote sites We want the HWIC-3G-HSPA to be usable for direct connectivity from head office to remote site B, and also the HWIC-3G-HSPA is do be used for comms between the remote sites when the frame relay is down (happens quite a bit). I initialy tried to do dynamic routing using EIGRP however in my lab setup of laptop - 1941 - 1941 - laptop, I was unable to get end to end connectivity. I later settled on static routing and have got end to end connectivity but only over frame relay, not the HWIC-3G-HSPA. I've tried using kron to ping the local HWIC-3G-HSPA interface (cellular 0/1/0) every minute but that hasn't been successful. Manually pinging the IP assigned (by the telco) to ce0/1/0 does bring the interface up. Any ideas? Thanks

  I've installed Mercurial per MT's knowledge base file here. Working with it server side using ssh from my Mac works fine. I can initialize repositories and the like, but pulling from the server or pushing from my Mac produces an error I don't understand. In the script which uses the module, it seems to be necessary to specify a long directory path including the version of Perl, like so: #!/usr/local/bin/perl use lib '/non/standard/location/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.9/'; use A::B; Is there any use lib or other statement which I can use which is not so long and verbose, and which does not include the actual version of Perl, in order that I don't have to go back and edit this out of the program if the version of Perl is upgraded?

• How do i rotate a CALayer around a diagonal line?

  Hi. I'm trying to implement a flip animation to be used in board game like iPhone-application. The animation is supposed to look like a game piece that rotates and changes to the color of its back (kind of like an Reversi piece). I've managed to create an animation that flips the piece around its orthogonal axis, but when I try to flip it around a diagonal axis by changing the rotation around the z-axis the actual image also gets rotated (not surprisingly). Instead I would like to rotate the image "as is" around a diagonal axis. I have tried to change layer.sublayerTransform but with no success. Here is my current implementation. It works by doing a trick to resolve the issue of getting a mirrored image at the end of the animation. Is this: the inexplicable dramatic destiny of the Perl programmer using Moose ? someone being extremely lazy and sloppy at writing error messages ? maybe on heavy drugs ? me not understanding basic english ? Gentlemen, when writing software, please please please, take care of the poor programmer that will use it and respect him by writing relevant error messages. • open flash chart rails x-axis issue

  Hey guys, I am using open flash chart 2 in my rails application. Everything is looking smooth except for the range on my x axis. I am creating a line to represent cell phone plan cost over a specific amount of usage and I'm generate 8 values, 1-5 are below the allowed usage while 6-8 are demonstrations of the cost for usage over the limit. The problem I'm encountering is how to set the range of the X axis in ruby on rails to something specific to the data. Right now the values being displayed are the indexes of the array that I'm giving. When I try to hand a hash to the values the chart doesn't even load at all. So basically I need help getting a way to set the data for my line properly so that it displays correctly, right now it is treating every value as if it represents the x value of the index of the array. • Oracle command hangs when using view for "WHERE x IN..." subquery

  I'm working on a web service that fetches data from an oracle data source in chunks and passes it back to an indexing/search tool in XML format. I'm the C#/.NET guy, and am kind of fuzzy on parts of Oracle. Our Oracle team gave us the following script to run, and it works well: SELECT ROWID, [columns] FROM [table] WHERE ROWID IN ( SELECT ROWID FROM ( SELECT ROWID FROM [table] WHERE ROWID > '[previous_batch_last_rowid]' ORDER BY ROWID ) WHERE ROWNUM <= 10000 ) ORDER BY ROWID 10,000 rows is an arbitrary but reasonable chunk size and ROWID is sufficiently unique for our purposes to use as a UID since each indexing run hits only one table at a time. Bracketed values are filled in programmatically by the web service. Now we're going to start adding views to the indexing, each of which will union a few separate tables. Since ROWID would no longer function as a unique identifier, they added a column to the views (VIEW_UNIQUE_ID) that concatenates the ROWIDs from the component tables to construct a UID for each union. But as soon as the inner two SELECT queries are added with "WHERE VIEW_UNIQUE_ID IN...", it hangs. Why doesn't this query work for views? In what important way are they not interchangeable here?

Is there any way to wrap several steps from a selenium test into one single step which can be referenced by other tests? • How can I make VS2010 behave like VS2008 w/r/t indentation?

  Situation I have a plain text file where indentation is important. line 1 line 1.1 (indented two spaces) line 1.2 (indented two spaces) line 1.2.3 (indented four spaces) In Visual Studio 2008, when I pressed enter, the next line would also be indented four spaces. However, in Visual Studio 2010, when I press enter, the next line is indented one tab. Question Does anybody know where, in the mountain of preferences under Tools Options, I can return to the way that Visual Studio 2008 worked? Under Options Text Editor Plain Text Tabs, I see the following: If I select "None", then I get no indentation when I move to the next line. If I select "Block", then I get TAB indentation (even though the previous line is spaces). In Visual Studio 2008, my indentation is set to "Block", and I get spaces. I have no idea what "Smart" indenting is, or why it is disabled.

  I am trying to get the Highlighter class from Lucene to work properly with tokens coming from Solr's WordDelimiterFilter. It works 90% of the time, but if the matching text contains a ',' such as "1,500" the output is incorrect: Expected: 'test 1,500 this' Observed: 'test 11,500 this' I am not currently sure whether it is Highlighter messing up the recombination or WordDelimiterFilter messing up the tokenization but something is unhappy. • Rsync Push files from linux to windoes. ssh issue - connection refused

  For some reason I want to run a script to move files from Linux machine to Windows. I have installed cwRsync on my windows machine and able to connect to linux machine. When i execute following command: rsync -e "ssh -l "piyush"" -Wgovz --timeout 120 --delay-updates --remove-sent-files /usr/local/src/piyush/sync/* "[email protected]:/cygdrive/d/temp" Where 10.0.0.60 is my widows machine and I am running above command on Linux - CentOS 5.5. After running command I get following error message: ssh: connect to host 10.0.0.60 port 22: Connection refused rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [sender] rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(463) [sender=2.6.8] [root@localhost sync]# ssh [email protected] ssh: connect to host 10.0.0.60 port 22: Connection refused I have modified my firewall settings on widows to allow all ports. I think this issue is due to SSH Daemon not present on my windows machine. So I tried installing OpenSSH on my machine and running ssh-agent but didn't helped. I tried similar command to run on my widows machine to pull files from Linux and its working fine. For some reason I want command for Linux machine so that I can embed it in a shell script. Can you suggest me if I am missing anything. I am already having cwRsync installed on my widows and running it in daemon mode using --damemon option. And I am able to login using ssh from windows machine to linux machine. When I issue bellow command, it just blocks for 120 seconds (timeout I specified in command) and exits saying there is timeout. rsync -e "ssh -l piyush" -Wgovz --timeout 120 --delay-updates --remove-sent-files /usr/local/src/piyush/sync/* "[email protected]:/cygdrive/d/temp" After starting rsync on widows, I checked, rsyc is running. And widows firewall setting are set to minimal, and on Linux machine stopped iptables service so that port 873 (default rsync port) is not blocked. What can be the possible reason that Linux machine is not able to connect to rsync-daemon on windows machine?

  I've got an VPS in germany running Debian X64. I have very strange issue. I have ISPConfig CP installed using proftpd and I can not connect to FTP by any means. Few hours ago I've had installed DirectAdmin on CentOS same VPS and same issue.
