• Local file system not properly unmounted during shutdown

  I have a file system with two HDDs and several partitions mounted separately locally. /root, /home, /usr, /var, /local/share , /home/bernhard/fotos/bilder, /backup are on separate partitions and are all ext3. During unmounting the message "unmounting local file system" does not appear any further and when booting all partitions but the root partition have to reload the journal, which indicates improper unmounting. The root partition and /usr are on sda, the others on sdb or further usb-mounted devices. the only partition unmounted w/o problem seems to be the root partition on sda4. I wonder whether the script to umount all devices has a "wait for success" loop or that the script itself got corrupted. However, yesterday I upgraded to 11.04 and the error persists. pmount does not look to be appropriate since the device are not hotplugged but simply mounted during system start. Obviously mounting /usr and afterwards /usr/local/share as well as /home and later /home/bernhard/fotos/bilder presents problems for umount; the devices may be busy und thus not properly unmounted. Does anybody have an idea for a script to organize unmounting in an ordered way? How to wait for unmounting of the secondary mount? Do you know as well where to place such a script that it will be used instead of the original umount command? Could be a general solution.

• Samba new file ownership, permissions configuration

  I have recently installed Samba on my server. Now I have a question about permissions and how to set it up. Currently I mount the Samba shared drive to my laptop with this line in /etc/fstab: //<host>/share /mnt/melka-server-data/ cifs username=<usrname> password=<passwd> _netdev 0 0 This works, as I can read from the files and create them (as root). The problem is when I want to create files as a regular user. I always get a Permission Denied error. Then the file zdar was created by magicmaster just by calling touch. I got the Permission Denied, but it was still created, though it belongs to nobody and I can't write into it. When I create a file as root, it still belongs to nobody, but at least I can write into it. What am I missing? I didn't notice anything in Samba config that would be related to this and I don't like the idea of having to log on as root in order to copy files.. Thanks

• Hide icons encrypted file system partitions in Nautilus

  I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 from the alternate CD. It has an encrypted root and swap partition. The root partition is visible in Nautilus as 'File Syste' icon. There is another icon "216 GB Filesystem". If I click it says: Unable to mount 216 GB Filesystem. /dev/mapper/sda5_crypt is mounted. Then there is another icon "6.1 GB Swap Space". If I click it it says: Unable to mount 6.1 GB Swap Space. Not a mountable file system. How can I hide these last two icons? • How to install .deb file from within preinst script

  I have my own application packaged using dpkg. The application depends on several deb files which I'm trying to install from within the preinst script of my application. The preinst script checks if a dependent deb file is installed, if not it goes to installt it using the dpkg -i command. This is repeated for all the dependent deb files needed by the main application. When I try to install the main application using dpkg -i, the commands returns failure when trying to execute the preinst script. Below is that error message. dpkg: error: dpkg status database is locked by another process I deleted /var/lib/dpkg/lock file and retried to install the application. But to no avail. If I run the preinst script separately like any other shell script, it runs without any issue. All the deb files will be installed properly. So, the issue is only when this preinst script is being run automatically by the dpkg -i command. I'm lost trying to determine the root cause. If anyone can shed some light on what the real issue might be, their help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Ashwin

• Hibernation to a swap file 12.04, fragfile output

  I've been trying for some time now, to get hibernation working in Ubuntu 12.04 on my Dell XPS17. I dualboot Windows 7 and Ubuntu, each having their own partition and one shared partition for all my data and documents. As I would like to be able to swtich from ubuntu to windows without losing all the things I was currently doing in Ubuntu, I would like to be able to use hibernation. In order to achieve this I've followed the information at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1042946. Only instead of creating my swap file on my linux partition (which is formatted: ext4), I've chosen to create one on my shared partition (which is formatted: ntfs). There is a problem with this though (at least, that's what I think the problem is), because when I call: sudo filefrag -v /media/data/Ubuntu_Swap_Space/6GiB.swap, I get the following output: Filesystem type is: 65735546 File size of /media/Data/Ubuntu_Swap_Space/6GiB.swap is 6442450944 (1572864 blocks, blocksize 4096) Discontinuity: Block 22 is at 25829097 (was 232498) /media/Data/Ubuntu_Swap_Space/6GiB.swap: 2 extents found So I'm not sure what I need to fill in as an offset to follow the rest of the earlier mentioned information. I've tried both the location of block 22 and the number that is listed after that, but when I then try sudo pm-hibernate nothing happens and this shows up in my /var/log/pm-suspend.log s2disk: Could not use the resume device (try swapon -a). Reason: No such device Hope someone can help me out with this! If you need more information about anything, please let me know!

• File browsing on Nautilus extremely slow after upgrade to 12.04

  One month ago I updated (no fresh install) to 12.04. Since then nautilus got extremely slow. When I open a folder that contains many subfolders I sometimes have to wait 4 seconds until everything is displayed. This has never been like that before, in previous versions I could always browse between my files extremely fast. I looked in "additional drivers" and changed from Nvidia current-version-update to the recommended drivers. This drastically increased the performance and speed of file browsing, unfortunately just for a couple of days. Now I am stuck again with the very slow Nautilus. I also tried to install the latest nvidia driver like it was suggested here: http://www.techlw.com/2012/03/install-nvidia-drivers-on-ubuntu-1204.html Did not work at all. Also when using the dash to try to find files it does not respond properly: does not find files or loads for ages until the file is displayed. I am working on an Acer Notebook with Intel® Core™ i5 CPU M 430 @ 2.27GHz × 4 6GB RAM GeForce GT 320M/PCIe/SSE2 64 Bit Ubuntu 12.04

• Getting file system free space

  This isn't a problem as such, more a request for information based on ignorance of the Linux filesystem. The very short question is: How do I find out how much free and used space there is on the volume from which Ubuntu is running? More detail: I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 from a 64Gb USB3 stick, created from booting up a year-old Ubuntu 12.04 DVD and running Startup Disk Creator. The reason for this is that the Master Boot Record on my hard disk, holding Windoze 7, has gone belly-up, and whilst awaiting a recovery disk I'm running Ubunto off USB or DVD as a 'trial'. (And will continue to run Ubuntu after restoring Windoze, as I've rediscovered my love of the penguin :o)) After installing Ubuntu on the stick I ran the software update app, which downloaded some 450Mb of updates and took a couple of hours to install to the stick. A couple of times I got a message saying that disk space was short. So I looked in the file manager (or whatever it's called these days) and couldn't see the stick listed, just: SYSTEM hard disk (listed as 479Gb Filesystem) two other partitions that had been created by Windoze "4.3GB Filesystem" which when I try to open gives the error "Could not find /cow", and when I try to unmount it tells me I can't because it's not mounted - D'OH!! Edit: screenshot of file manager Edit: screenshot of low disk space warning What I can't see is the USB stick from which I'm running Ubuntu. Where's it gone, anybody know? This is tangentially related to a previous question of mine about system tools, in that I'm trying to get control and knowledge of the system in the newest incarnation of Ubuntu.

• Error when reloading supervisord: unix:///tmp/supervisor.sock no such file

  I'm running supervisord on my CentOS 6 box like so, /usr/bin/supervisord -c /etc/supervisord.conf and when I launch supervisorctl all process status are fine, but if I try to reload using supervisorctl I get unix:///tmp/supervisor.sock no such file I'm using the same config file I've used successfully on other boxes, and im running everything as root. • MAMP + Python MySQLDB - trouble installing

  I'm currently running the latest version of MAMP on my Snow Leopard OSX, and I'm trying to install MySQLDB. Downloaded: MySQL-python-1.2.3c1 I went into the setup_posix.py and adjusted the location of the mysql_config to the one in MAMP: mysql_config.path = "/Applications/MAMP/Library/bin/mysql_config" When trying to build I get the error below. • What are some good/reputable/widely-used libraries written in VB.NET?

  Generally speaking, when VB.NET and C# are compared, there is a lot of strong support for C#, accompanied by some bashing of VB.NET until a respected developer comes along and acts as The Voice Of Reason, pointing out that while VB prior to VB.NET had its fair share of issues, VB.NET is really a very strong, fully OOP language that is, feature-wise, right about on par with C# (with the exception of certain things like a full-bodied lamba syntax [pre-VB10] or the yield keyword, as many C# faithfuls are quick to point out). I myself, having written plenty of code in both VB.NET and C#, fall squarely in the "I prefer C#, but don't consider VB.NET any less of a language" camp. However, one thing I have noticed is that when it comes to respected and/or widely-used libraries for .NET, everyting is written in C#. Or at least that's been my impression. This strikes me as a little strange because, aside from the abovementioned sprinkling of nice features (in particular the yield keyword), I tend to view the VB.NET/C# divide as primarily a matter of personal taste. Obviously, plenty of developers prefer C#. But I personally know some developers (good ones) who prefer VB.NET, which would lead me to suspect that surely some libraries (good ones) would be written in VB.NET. They must be out there, and I just haven't found them. What are some good libraries that've been written in VB.NET? The best would be open source, as that would allow interested developers to take a look at some good VB.NET code and see how effective the language can be when used properly. But I'd be interested to know about any libraries at all, particularly reputable ones.

Is there a way to do this in Perl?

• IE7 - visited links revert to unvisted after page refresh

  Hello, A number of our users have just upgraded from IE6 to IE7. the upgreaded users are reporting an issue with visited links reverting to their unvisited color after a page refresh. This only happens to links that are using javascript instead of a hard coded URL: <script lang="JavaScript"> <!-- function LoadGoogle() { var LoadGoogle = window.open('http://www.google.com'); } --> </script> <a href="javascript:LoadGoogle()">Google using javascript</a> <a href="#" OnClick="javascript:LoadGoogle()">Google using javascript OnClick</a> The above links will revert back to the unvisited color whenever the page is refreshed. It doesn't matter if the page is refreshed because of a post back, manually hitting the refresh or f5 button, or from an auto-refresh function. Please note, the above code is an over simplification of what is actually happening, but I believe it illustrates the issue well enough. This is causing a problem for our users because we are providing them with a list of items that are all opened into new windows via javascript when they are clicked; and refresh the parent page when the users are finished with them. Each time the parent page is refreshed all of these links revert back to their unvisited color, so our users are losing track of which items they've worked on. I've been digging around and it looks like this is intended behavior. IE7 doesn't register these links with the browsers history. Does anyone know a work around that will allow us to keep these javascript links in the visited state without having to do a major overhaul of the apps code? Thank you.

  I have a client whose desire is to have her Wordpress blog show a MailChimp form on her home page as a gateway to a .pdf. I need the following behavior to occur when the user clicks "Submit": execute the included MailChimp's javascript file; this ensures the form was properly filled, and then performs the sign-up to the newsletter list (don't need help with this part) then show the user an informational PDF for download or viewing EDIT: The logical order was flipped from when I originally posted this. The script should execute, and only if the script gets executed properly should the PDF show to the user Note: My experience level with HTML and PHP is 3/4, and with JS I am 2/4 EDIT: (seems more like 1/4 at this point lol). If my research is correct, PHP (server-side language) would be used to do that which the client wants. Additional validation is not necessary beyond what MailChimp's script provides (it ensures that user has submitted a completed form) is not necessary in this case (the client says it's ok if the e-mail isn't valid at all). • Should I put my output files in source control?

  I've been asked to put every single file in my project under source control, including the database file (not the schema, the complete file). This seems wrong to me, but I can't explain it. Every resource I find about source control tells me not to put generated output files in a source control system. And I understand, it's not "source" files. However, I've been presented with the following reasoning: Who cares? We have plenty of bandwidth. I don't mind having to resolve a conflict each time I get the latest revision, it's just one click It's so much more convenient than having to think about good ignore files Also, if I have to add an external DLL file in the bin folder now, I can't forget to put it in source control, as the bin folder is not being ignored now. The simple solution for the last bullet-point is to add the file in a libraries folder and reference it from the project. Please explain if and why putting generated output files under source control is wrong.

• Programmatically open an email from a POP3 and extract an attachment

  We have a vendor that sends CSV files as email attachments. These CSV files contain statuses that are imported into our application. I'm trying to automate the process end-to-end, but it currently depends on someone opening an email, saving the attachment to a server share, so the application can use the file. Since I cannot convince the vendor to change their process, such as offering an FTP location or a Web Service, I'm stuck with trying to automate the existing process. Does anyone know of a way to programmatically open an email from a POP3 account and extract an attachment? The preferred solution would reside on a Windows 2003 server, be written VB.NET and secure. The application can reside on the same server as the POP3 server, for example, we could setup the free POP3 server that comes with Windows Server and pull against the mail file stored on the file system. BTW, we are willing to pay for an off-the-shelf solution, if one exists. Note: I did look at this question but the answer points to a CodeProject solution that doesn't deal with attachments.

  We have a Makefile which runs on a Windows 2003 machine and we are using mingw32-make for it. Since the Makefile has many include paths, it exceeds the buffer size of 8K that the cmd can handle [Ref - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830473/EN-US/due to which the compilation results in "input line too long" issue. I wanted to know the following - What would be the best way to optimize the Makefile as I have already removed unwanted compiler switches, include paths etc. Is there any way we can put all the INCLUDE paths in one .txt file and import it in the Makefile.I could not find any mingw32 documentation for the same.   If the specifics are important, I made a cruisecontrol.net publisher plugin that notifies a series of phone numbers via voice, announcing the current state of the build. It uses Twilio to do so. I'd like to avoid getting hung up on the specifics of what it is I've made, as I have this question a lot, with a number of little hobby one-offs. What's the state of the art as far as making my hobby output available to the world at large? There seem to be a lot of options for open-source project hosting, community features, and what role to take in all of this. It's a little bewildering. What I'm looking for is to put this out into the wild for free and basically take a hands-off approach from there. Is that realistic? Which project hosting service can I use for free to allow developers to at least download the code, report issues and collaborate with each other to improve the product? What snags have you run into that could make me regret this decision? I'm interested in war stories, advice and guidance on making this little product available to the community where it can be used.

• Jquery SimpleModal flickers in Firefox

  I'm using SimpleModal plugin for Jquery and I have a weird problem with Firefox ( other browsers work fine: Chrome, Safari, Opera, IE). What happens is when I click on the button that launches the modal dialog, before showing the modal (and the fadeIn of the overlay), there is a quick "flicker", less than half a second. (It's longer on my slower PC). Weird thing is, it didn't happen in Firefox 3.5.2, but when I upgraded to 3.6.3, I got the flicker. Any ideas? • Iframe/Popup redirecting opener window

  Hello all, I have a page located at x.com. On this page is a button that, when clicked, will launch a new window (using javascript's window.open() method) to a page that is located at z.com. The popup does a few things, then redirects the original window (the opener, x.com) to a different page based on some parameters defined in the popup. This works fine in Firefox/Chrome, but not in IE. In IE (8 specifically, but I believe 7 also has this problem) the original window (the opener) is not redirected. Instead, a new window comes up and THAT window is redirected. I've tried many different methods to try and get this to work, including changing the popup to an iframe loaded on the page and having a function on the opener that the popup/iframe call. The problem seems to be that IE refuses to allow cross-domain sites to talk to each other via javascript. Is there a way around this? How can I get the parent window to redirect to a page based on parameters in a popup or iframe? Bara
