• Real World ADF - another new ADF book hits the stands

  I'm pleased to report that yet another Oracle ADF book hits the bookstores this month.  One of my fellow Product Managers, Jobinesh, has written Oracle ADF Real World Developer's Guide.   I'm currently awaiting a copy for review and can't wait to get into this book.  Jobinesh is an incredibly smart and switched-on technical ADF guru and I'm convinced I'm going to learn a whole lot of tips and techniques from this book. Once I get my hands on a copy I'll be writing up a full review. As someone who has written an Oracle ADF book already, I know the effort that goes into something like that, so well done Jobinesh.

• Translating Fusion Apps Customizations: Composers mean Usable Apps in Any Language

  Quick shoutout for the Fusion Applications (Cloud Applications to you) Developer Relations blog post about translating Fusion apps customizations using composers and other tools and utilities provided by Oracle. Great to see Fusion help customizations included in the post, as well as software, and it also includes a nice heads up on what's coming to enable customers to make changes to text themselves in Release 8 of Oracle's Cloud Applications. I am proud to say that I logged the enhancements for what's coming in Release 8  to come to life and also wrote a spec for its requirements based on the customer research done internationally through the Oracle Usability Advisory Board). Remember,  copywriting is design and translated versions means reflecting local UX requirements too! Nice post guys!

• Devoxx Coming Up!

   Devoxx, the biggest Java conference in Europe, is  only a couple of days away. From November 12th to  16th, over 3,400 developers from all over Europe  are descending on Antwerp, Belgium for a week  focused on Java.  At the Oracle booth, Java experts will be available  to answer your  questions and demo the new  features of the Java Platform, including Java  Embedded,  JavaFX, JavaSE and Java EE.  Beer bash at the booth Tuesday from 17:30-19:30 and Wednesday/Thursday from 18:00 to 20:00. Oracle is also raffling off two Raspberry PI and books every day. Make sure to stop by  and enter the raffle during the day. Check the online schedule with sessions from the Java experts at Oracle.

• Non-trivial functions that operate on any monad

  I'm looking for examples of interesting methods that take an arbitrary monad and do something useful with it. Monads are extremely general, so methods that operate on monads are widely applicable. On the other hand, methods I know of that can apply to any monad tend to be... really, really trivial. Barely worth extracting into a function. Here's a really boring example: joinTwice. It just flattens an m m m t into an m t: join n = n >>= id joinTwice n = (join . join) n main = print (joinTwice [[[1],[2, 3]], [[4]]]) -- prints [1,2,3,4] The only non-trivial method for monads that I know of is bindFold (see my answer below). Are there more?

• Where to install bootloader when installing Ubuntu as secondary OS?

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu as secondary OS on my laptop. I have Windows 8 already installed on my laptop. Now, I know how to run Ubuntu from USB drive, I created addition partition and formatted it to EXT4. So I'm ready to install. Now, 'Device for boot loader installation:' displays: /dev/sta ATA HITACHI (750 GB) /dev/sta1 Windows 8 (loader) /dev/sta2 /dev/sta5 /dev/sta6 Ubuntu 12.04 (12.04) /dev/stb I tries choosing Ubuntu 12.04 partition but it doesn't even let me to pick which OS to install and goes straight to Windows 8. Which partition I must choose to be able to pick which OS to boot from? Preferably, set up so Windows 8 will be at first place, and Ubuntu on second. Any ideas? I don't want to mess up anything if I pick something wrong.

• SPARC T5-4 Engineering Simulation Solution

  A recent Oracle internal performance evaluation for computer-based product design demonstrated that Oracle's SPARC T5-4 server running MSC's SimManager simulation software with Oracle Database 12c consolidates the work of multiple x86 servers while delivering better overall performance.   Engineering simulation solutions have taken the center stage in helping companies design and develop innovative products while reducing physical prototyping costs, and exploring a larger design space, resulting in more design possibilities. For this solution, a single SPARC T5-4 server running Oracle Solaris 11 was deployed to consolidate the MSC SimManager server, the Oracle Database 12c server, and the web application server onto a single platform.   In Oracle Applications it is possible to configure iSupplier to link to an Oracle iSurvey, and for the Oracle iSurvey to be executed for a Supplier. This integration requires: An Oracle Script An Oracle iSurvey linked to the Oracle Script iSupplier Configuration to reference the iSurvey. Once set up, the iSurvey will be available from the supplier tab from the Purchasing Responsibilities and from the iSupplier Portal.  Responses to the survey can be viewed from the Survey Administrator Responsibility. • Multitenant Self-Service Provisioning Anwendung

  Oracle Multitenant ist eine neue Datenbank-Architektur, die seit Oracle Database Version 12c zur Verfügung steht.
