  • Are UML class diagrams adequate to design javascript systems?

    - by Vandell
Given that UML is oriented towards a more classic approach to object orientation, is it still usable in a reliable way to design javascript systems? One specific problem that I can see is that class diagrams are, in fact, a structural view of the system, and javascript is more behaviour driven, how can you deal with it? Please, keep in mind that I'm not talking abot the real world domain here, It's a model for the solution that I'm trying to achieve.

Denali is coming, whether you like it or not. You may not be an early adopter and you may not have plans on your current calendar, but at some point you will need to move your apps and databases to this release - or one very much like it. There are a lot of great new features you will be able to take advantage of, but not everything is a double rainbow. There are some changes that will break your spirit if you let them. What does it mean? I go over several breaking changes in my presentation that...(read more)

  • Multiplication for MVP matrices: Any benefits to doing so within the vertex shader?

    - by Nick Wiggill
I'd like to understand under what circumstances (if any) it is worth doing MVP matrix multiplication inside a vertex shader. The vertex shader is run once per vertex, and a single mesh typically contains many vertices. All MVP inputs remain the same for each vertex in the vertex batch relating to a given draw call (model). Surely then, you're always better off keeping the multiplications in the client code, such that you pass in the whole MVP precalculated as a uniform? (avoiding redundant ops between individual vertices)

  • Loading from Multiple Data Sources with Oracle Loader for Hadoop

    - by mannamal
Oracle Loader for Hadoop can be used to load data from multiple data sources (for example Hive, HBase), and data in multiple formats (for example Apache weblogs, JSON files).   There are two ways to do this: (1) Use an input format implementation.  Oracle Loader for Hadoop includes several input format implementations.  In addition, a user can develop their own input format implementation for proprietary data sources and formats. (2) Leverage the capabilities of Hive, and use Oracle Loader for Hadoop to load from Hive. These approaches are discussed in our Oracle Open World 2013 presentation

  • The old "do as I say, not as I do" problem

    - by AaronBertrand
Microsoft is often considered a leader, an innovator, a trend-setter. The same could be said for Apple, Google, and a host of other tech companies. And each of those has its set of critics as well, who think that the company is the opposite - or worse. Some people think it is a good idea to model their own code, architecture or applications after things that these companies have done, but this is not always the best approach. Humans work at these companies too, and everyone is prone to mistakes,...(read more)

  • AdventueWorks Design Patterns Project - Part 1

    - by RonGarlit
This is the presentation I did tonight at PHILLYNJ.NET.  It is the first in a multi-part of a series on the Applied Design Patterns.   The solution files are working code with design pattern notes in the comment blocks. After the overview and higher level discussions on Enterprise Design Patterns I reviewed the low level Database Access Library of code.  With walk-throughs of the the code and unint test. After that we went through the ProductPhotoConsoleTest Application that performed intergration testing of the DBAccess Class with the AdventureWorks ProductPhoto table extracting the photos and writing them to a file folder. The Demo code and PowerPoint can be obained from this link.  https://skydrive.live.com/?wa=wsignin1.0&cid=29e34e9a8650bb9e#!/?cid=29e34e9a8650bb9e&sc=documents&id=29E34E9A8650BB9E%21151 Please note that I use Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate.  If you have a lesser version the Modeling projects likely will not work or have limited functionality and you should unload that project to prevent warning. Enjoy! --Ron

  • Touch pad 2 finger scroll not working

    - by user31984
I purchased a new Samsung Series 7 laptop, Model: 700Z5B to be exact. I have everything working great using Ubuntu 11.10, the only issue is that the 2 finger scroll on the track pad does not work. Does anyone have any pointers for what I need to do to configure it. I've looked around on the forums and have not found anything that has worked yet. I don't even see the trackpad options under the mouse and touchpad settings area.

  • Drawing flaming letters in 3D with OpenGL ES 2.0

    - by Chiquis
I am a bit confused about how to achieve this. What I want is to "draw with flames". I have achieved this with textures successfully, but now my concern is about doing this with particles to achieve the flaming effect. Am I supposed to create a path along which I should add many particle emitters that will be emitting flame particles? I understand the concept for 2D, but for 3D are the particles always supposed to be facing the user? Something else I'm worried about is the performance hit that will occur by having that many particle emitters, because there can be many letters and drawings at the same time, and each of these elements will have many particle emitters. More detailed explanation: I have a path of points, which is my model. Imagine a dotted letter "S" for example. I want make the "S" be on fire. The "S" is just an example it can be a circle, triangle, a line, pretty much any path described by my set of points. For achieving this fire effect I thought about using particles. So I am using a program called "Particle Designer" to create a fire style particle emitter. This emitter looks perfect on 2D on the iphone screen dimensions. So then I thought that I could probably draw an S or any other figure if i place many particle emitters next to each other following the path described. To move from the 2D version to the 3D version I thought about, scaling the emitter (with a scale matrix multiplication in its model matrix) and then moving it to a point in my 3D world. I did this and it works. So now I have 1 particle emitter in the 3D world. My question is, is this how you would achieve a flaming letter? Is this too inefficient if i expect to have many flaming paths on my world? Am i supposed to rotate the particle's quad so that its always looking at the user? (the last one is because i noticed that if u look at it from the side the particles start to flatten out)

  • How do I instal Skype on iMac G5 Ubuntu 12.04.1?

So I have this imac G5 model 8.7 running powerpc64. I can't install any of the .debs they have on skype.com because they're the wrong architecture and I also tried adding the partner repo for the software center but when I do sudo apt-get install skype it says it can't find the package as if the repo I just added doesn't exist. I added the repo with the following command: sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $(lsb_release -sc) partner" I'm running Ubuntu Release 12.04 (precise) 32-bit Kernel Linux 3.2.0-31-powerpc64-smp GNOME 3.4.2
