• what knowledge would I need to make a good simulation games

- by Skeith
I have an idea for a game like theme park but don't know how simulation games are made. I am not some noob on his first game so I appreciated constructive answers instead of "its hard, don't do it". What I want is to know how simulation game mechanics are put together. I figure it would be heaver on the AI than normal games and not knowing much about AI would like to know some programming techniques I should look into for this style game. specific techniques please not just a book on ai. what sort of architecture would be used? I guess it would have some sort of probability engine with pre designed events that are triggered based on the AI state. Would it use a FSM or be purely event driven ? Any information on how a sims game functions would be cool.

• Remote Desktop Connection Manager

- by Robert May
For years, I’ve been using the “Remote Desktops” mmc plugin to manage servers in our infrastructure. I’ve upgraded to Windows 8 and Remote Desktops is nowhere to be found! I search and searched and came across a forum listing saying “Why don’t you just use Remove Desktop Connection Manager?” I downloaded it and started using it and its WAY better than Remote Desktops! I’m glad they took it out and I discovered this tool. I wish I had discovered this two years ago! It sits on an SQl Server backend but can also use any other databases prefered. Its Administrator just has to add the path where the database will be and it will autio create the database. This software was orignally developed to help UN Agancies and NGOs in thier work but can also be ustilised by other entities like the police, the human rights organisations, roads authority, etc etc. The development of a newer version(IncidentTracker v2) has been started in silverlight. • Design Pattern Books, Papers or Resources for Non-Object Orientated Paradigms?

- by FinnNk
After viewing this video on InfoQ about functional design patterns I was wondering what resources are out there on design patterns for non-object orientated paradigms. There are plenty out there for the OO world (GOF, etc, etc) and for architecture (EoEAA, etc, etc) but I'm not aware of what's out there for functional, logic, or other programming paradigms. Is there anything? A comment during the video suggests possibly not - does anyone know better? (By the way, by design patterns I don't mean language features or data structures but higher level approaches to designing an application - as discussed in the linked video)

• HTTP(S) based file server

- by Michael
I've got a server running Ubuntu 10.04. I've already gotten openssh for ssh and sftp on it. I've been looking for a web-based (http, or preferably https) file server, perhaps a web-front-end to an (S)FTP server, that allows access to a specific folder, and also allows uploads. It requires user authentication, preferably using PAM. This web-based solution is for users that are not allowed to use FTP software / browser extension and don't have flash / java browser plugins within their corporate environments. So far I have looked into: Webmin: Includes a file manager, however it uses Java, and I'm looking for a plugin-free implementation. Apache2: I was able to set up https and PAM authentication, but the barebone implementation doesn't include file upload (as far as I'm aware of). HFS: Haven't tried it out because it is for Windows/wine only, and I don't want to run it under wine.

• Wordpress : Automatically transfer media files to Amazon S3

- by Ron Ranieri
I've been using VPS to host 7 Wordpress websites, most of them require big storage but very little RAM and traffic. So I'm thinking of moving the static files(uploads folder) content to Amazon S3 and I'm looking for the most viable solution to this. I want every website to have their own bucket and newly uploaded media files automatically uploaded to Amazon S3 without using plugin. I'm ok with cron job, for example the files were uploaded first to my server, then transferred to S3 and deleted from my server every 24 hour. Or is there any way for me to change the default upload directory to my S3 bucket without sacrificing any Wordpress functionality(resize/title etc)? What do you think the most efficient way to do this? Currently I'm looking at this plus cron job but I would like to know better option if it exist.

• How to setup VPN as Proxy

- by Nicolas Nox
I have an PerfectPrivacy VPN connected via the OpenVPN-Network-Manger-Plugin (Ubuntu 12.04.1) and I want to assign a system wide proxy over that VPN. I have tried proxydriver that should do that automatically, but it works partially. The browser says that I have the IP of the VPN, but when I tried to send an eMail over SMTP (Port 25), I can´t connect to the mail server. In our company the smtp server port is closed, but that should be not a problem, when I do that over a VPN, shouldn´t it? greetings

• Is there an easy way to (temporarily) disable the display timeout?

- by Izzy
In KDE 3.5 there was the powermanager plugin for the kicker panel, where one could easily switch between different profiles. So normally, I want the display to go to sleep after, say, 10 minutes of user inactivity. But when I watch a video, this should not happen. I know I could go via the KDE launcher, settings, powermanager, and change the setting. But this is too complicated for daily use. I also know there are those activities. But I don't want to change background etc., just the display timeout. Furthermore, when I tried this, many of the open apps simply crashed and got restarted. I simply don't like this approach. Preferably, it would be something to plug-in to the panel, which opens a menu to select the profile -- as it was with KDE 3.5. Is there a similar solution I missed?

• Have you worked with a well designed application?

- by Vilx-
Inspired by this question, I started wondering - is there or has there ever been such a thing as a "well designed application"? One where the architecture would be perfect and no refactoring would ever be needed; code would be easy to read and understand even for someone new to the project; changes could be done with a 100% certainty that they won't break anything; etc? I must admit that whatever codebases I've worked with, they've all been more or less a mess. Even code that I start myself only stays organized at the start, and then slowly deteriorates as the time passes. I'm even starting to accept this as part of life and can't figure out whether I should be worried about that or not. So... is there such a thing as a "well designed application"? Or is all our code so shitty that there isn't even a point in trying to make it better, because it will never be good anyway?

• Windows Installer – InstallAware (coupon)

- by Randy Walker
Here’s another one of my tools in my toolset for deploying software. I’ve used their product for several years with great success. They make use of a PlugIn and web model. So if your software requires the .Net framework 3.5, the installer will check for all of the required runtimes, and then only download the files needed from your website. They also support patching your application. A great tool that’s well designed and easy to use. Plus, here’s a coupon code for 25% off! Coupon Code: MSMVP http://www.installaware.com/buydirect.asp

• wordpress restored from backup asking for ftp

- by Siddharth
I backed up my /var/www/wordpress folder to my external harddisk and restored it back. Now when I add a new plugin I am asked for ftp access to my localhost. I wonder why ? As far as I could go /var/www/wordpress and its subfolders/files are own'ed by root. I have logged in to my wordpress as admin root. I dont know why I need to setup ftpd, but I tried that too. "http://askubuntu.com/questions/14371/how-to-setup-ftp-to-use-in-locally-hosted-wordpress" I am missing something really silly here.

• Testing controller logic that uses ISession directly

- by Rippo
I have just read this blog post from Jimmy Bogard and was drawn to this comment. Where this falls down is when a component doesn’t support a given layering/architecture. But even with NHibernate, I just use the ISession directly in the controller action these days. Why make things complicated? I then commented on the post and ask this question:- My question here is what options would you have testing the controller logic IF you do not mock out the NHibernate ISession. I am curious what options we have if we utilise the ISession directly on the controller?

• Zotero error in libreoffice

- by arno
I installed Zotero standalone in 12.10 64bit. Some problems which I managed to fix. The one that remains is an error saying "openoffice.org could not communicate with Zotero. make sure zotero standalone or Firefox are open and set to an online state and try again". That's when I click any button in the Zotero toolbar in libreoffice. Firefox doesn't open with a the plugin installed and a working internet connection. The Zotero troubleshooting which mentions this error was of no help to me. I find reports about this bug going back as far as 2009 but I haven't found anything of help.

• Should I use float, double, or decimal for stats, position, etc?

- by Ryan Peschel
The problem with float and double is that they are not exact. If you are to do something like store replays, the values would have to be exact. The problems with decimal is that they are approximately 16x slower (confirmed by searching and personal testing) than floats and doubles. Couldn't Vector2s be another problem because they use floats internally for all the components? How do other games solve this problem? I'm sure they must use floats and doubles but aren't they not deterministic across platforms and different architecture? The replay files for games like SC2 run in a linear fashion so you cannot skip ahead so how do they solve the determinism issue with floating point numbers?
