  • Running Rails as an embedded app inside of a gem

    - by randombits
I'm trying to understand what exactly the above (in my question's Title) means? This is taken directly from the SpreeCommerce.com project: If you’re an experienced Rails developer you may be wondering where your app directory is. Spree actually runs as an embedded Rails app inside of your gem. How do you customize things then? We’ll cover that later in extensions. Source: http://spreecommerce.com/documentation/getting_started.html Can someone further explain what exactly it means when a Rails app is run "inside of your gem"

  • Ruby On Rails on Windows - Linux VM or dual boot

    - by CocoB
I am a windows developer currently getting into Rails. While you can develop on RoR Windows, it's not the ideal experience. Things are glitchy and running cucumber tests are painfully slow. So, would I be able to have a decent dev experience running Linux in a VM for doing RoR development, or should I bite the bullet and just do a dual boot - Windows 7 / Linux?

  • Eclipse: Should I create a workspace for each project ?

    - by Zombies
I am simply wondering whether it is best to put all of my Eclipse projects into one workspace, or do a 1 workspace per 1 project. I am just a solo developer, for hobby more or less, but the apps I create do actually have production versions that are running on rather frequent cron jobs, so its almost like an amateur production environment. The only problems I have noticed so far is for exporting JARs, I have the potential to include source files from other projects which seems like it could get messy (maybe?).

  • How do I specify a project dependency with Hudson?

    - by Brett Ryan
We have common library projects shared amongst many projects that are required to be checked out into a "Libraries" folder which a developer needs to checkout prior to opening the main project in visual studio. How I tell hudson that there is this dependency? I figured one thing I could do is setup a custom workspace and specify the location for all projects, but how do I wire up the dependency between them all? Is simply specifying "Build after other projects are built" enough?

  • Versioning system for MS Access

    - by Melissa L
I am currently the only developer on a MS Access project, but we may soon be adding developers onto to the project. This will be my first time sharing the load on a single MS Access project and I'm a bit clueless as to what versioning system (ex. SubVersion) might work best. Any suggestions on programs I should be taking a look at or staying away from? Thanks for your help!

  • iPhone and OpenCV

    - by Pascal T.
I know that OpenCV was ported to Mac OS X, however I did not find any info about a port to the iPhone. I am not a Mac developer, so that I do not know whether a Mac OS X port is enough for the iPhone. Does anyone know better than me? Edit: Thanks for the informed answer Adam.

    - by Vegetus
When I create a controller with following through Zend_Tool command: create controller NameController ... netbeans creates a new controller successfully. BUT, it sends a message in the output window: PHPUnit is required in order to generate controller test stubs. How do I get Netbeans to automatically create a class with phpunit testing? I searched the net and thousands solutions so far not able to solve ... Important Notes: Have already installed the pear Already installed phpunit Already included 'phpunit' in the include_path Has created a file and includes zf.ini too in the include_path Options already configured netbeans, where I informed the directory phpunit.bat. Is it a bug in NetBeans? See:

  • Looking for some Feedback on a DB Design

    - by zSysop
I'm currently working on a ticketing system which allows our users to submit tickets based on their own needs. i.e. if Department "A" is submitting a ticket they can have certain types of problem categories (such as "Supplies" or "Printer") along with details pertaining to the chosen category. I have laid out a partial db design and i was looking for some feedback on it. I've never built a system from the ground up by myself so i'm a little bit nervous. here's my a draft version of my db design Issues Table Id | CreatedBy | CreateDate | Status | Owner | AssignedTo | AssignmentDate | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- EquipmentIssueDetails Table Id | IssueId | Serial # | Make | Model | .... --------------------------------------------- SupplyIssueDetails Table Id | IssueId | SupplyId | ItemId | QTY | UnitOfMeasurement ------------------------------------------------------------- NetworkIssueDetails Table Id | IssueId | Supervisor | Details | ------------------------------------------------------------- Notes Table Id | IssueId | Note | CreatedBy | CreateDate ------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks in advance

  • Converting items in Visual Studio project from "links" to copied files

    - by Alan Mendelevich
Hi, I have a Visual Studio (2008) project where I have some files added as links (through Add Existing Item-Add As Link). Suppose I want to copy this project somewhere else (give it to another developer, release source code, etc.) and I would like to "convert" all these links to actual copies of these files. Is this possible? How can I do this in VS or is there some 3rd party utility to do that? Thanks.

  • Switch to selected tab by name in Jquery-UI Tabs

    - by Rob

I know I can switch to a tab if I know it's number, but in the case I've run into I won't know that. Notes: JQuery 1.3.1 / JQuery-UI 1.6rc6

  • Qt compilation and stylesheet

    - by Yosko
Each time I compile my Qt project after modifying my qss stylesheet file, the modifications aren't taken into account, unless I rebuild everything. Any idea on a workaround for this, so that I don't have to wait 5 minutes each time I change my qss ? Notes: I use Qt 4.8, and my stylsheet is declared in a resource file (qrc). EDIT: As suggested by Luca Carlon, when a qss is reference in the project through a .qrc file, the changes in the qss don't affect the qrc, and the compiler ignores it. To avoid that, I added a Custom Build Step to my project: before the qmake step! calls a .bat file without any argument the .bat contains the real command copy /b files.qrc +,,

  • What is so bad about Singletons

    - by Ewan Makepeace
The Singleton pattern is a fully paid up member of the GoF Patterns Book but lately seems rather orphaned by the developer world. I still use quite a lot of singletons, especially for Factory classes, and while you have to be a bit careful about multithreading issues (like any class actually) fail to see why they are so awful. This site especially seems to assume that everyone agrees that Singletons are evil. Why?

I understand technology, I understand OpenID, but I don't have a clue how to login to this site with the username I created whilst asking another question unless I ask yet another question? Sure, this is a techie site but if I can't work out how to log in then what hope is OpenID to the rest of the non technical world?

  • Do the ideas of traditional software engineering conflict with the newer agile development technique

    - by fuentesjr
So as a developer I am seeking to improve not only my coding skills but my design and management skills. Because of this I'm starting to pay more attention to software engineering practices but i'm not sure where agile development fits into the picture. I can appreciate agility in projects but I wonder whether this conflicts with the traditional ways of software engineering practices and research.

  • Does Google hire .NET developers? [closed]

    - by Hermann
I am a .NET developer looking for a job. I've talked to someone who works at Google and loves it there and I generally have a good feeling about working for that company because I love most of Google's products and services. But are they even interested in .NET developers? I had the impression they only use non-proprietary technologies.

How should proper file to create (import from csv file) a new requirements look like?
