  • Windows 7 explorer always crashes, opens small "Personalized Settings" window

    My Windows 7 desktop PC, built by me, started acting very weird in the last couple of days. I use it quite often, about half of the time through TeamViewer. Explorer would crash and restart randomly, almost always through TeamViewer. This made me suspect that TeamViewer was the problem but I have reproduced it with and without TeamViewer several times. The only way I can seem to get the problem not to occur is by booting into Safe Mode. I have used CCleaner and Malwarebytes to make sure it wasn't a registry error or malware causing the problem, and I have tried the fix in the seemly related issue here as well every other fix I have found online including removing security updates KB980408 and KB2926765 as well as using "sfc /scannow" and a bunch of other things I can't remember. More recently when I try to start explorer it is popping up a small window that says "Personalized Settings" on the top, but is completely empty and crashes instantly. The only way I can get it to disappear is to kill the explorer.exe process. I wish I could take a screenshot but I can't seem to open paint or even find the exe. I have tried restarting it, I have tried starting it while the personalized settings window was open. I have come up with two lists of processes the first is the list of active processes when I boot into safe mode and explorer seems to work fine. The second is the list of processes that I can narrow it down to in normal boot and still replicate the problem. There is one process that I can't seem to close. NisSrv.exe which is describes as "Microsoft Network Realtime Inspection Service". When I try to close the process NisSrv.exe it says "The operation could not be completed. Access is denied." When I try to close the related service it gives the same message. Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected. My explorer tab in Autoruns seen below along with the error when I try to uncheck something. I should add that I seem to be able to disable shell extensions with ShellExView but I still can't get explorer to start correctly. EXPLORER SHELL UPDATE - See screenshot below I can access the explorer right click menu through a file manager I downloaded called NexusFile, but still no luck starting explorer. Any suggestions or tips would be great. Additional Info In addition, I may have other issues that might suggest a cause. I tried running mongo with --fork --logpath /home/lucas..., but it did not work.   • Python install issue on Mac OS X

    I have been using the standard python that comes with OS X Lion (2.7.2) but I wanted to build a UCS-4 version to handle 4-byte unicode characters better. I had already installed pip and packages like pytz, virtualenv and virtualenvwrapper, etc., and these are installed in /Library/Python/2.7/site-packages. My $PATH is /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin. To build a new version of python on the machine (outside of any project specific virtual environments, that will come later), I followed the instructions on this article and managed to build it in /usr/local/bin. The problem is that when I launched a new bash window, I got the following virtualenvwrapper error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "<string>", line 1, in <module> ImportError: No module named virtualenvwrapper.hook_loader virtualenvwrapper.sh: There was a problem running the initialization hooks. If Python could not import the module virtualenvwrapper.hook_loader, check that virtualenv has been installed for VIRTUALENVWRAPPER_PYTHON=/usr/local/bin/python and that PATH is set properly. The instructions said to move /usr/local/bin to the top of the /etc/paths file, and since then I've noticed some strange issues. I installed pip into /usr/local/bin and now I have assumed that since I'm working in /usr/local/bin, and the newly installed python's site packages is now located in /usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages, when I do pip freeze, it should be empty as nothing is installed there yet. However, pip freeze still reports things installed in the old (OS X) site-packages folder. Here's some info after the build: $ which python /usr/local/bin/python $ which pip /usr/local/bin/pip $ echo $PATH /usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin When I uninstall a python package with pip, it removes it from the old site-packages folder as expected. When I install it again, instead of installing it in /usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages, it installs it in /Library/Python/2.7/site-packages (verified by attempting to install it again and receiving Requirement already satisfied (use --upgrade to upgrade): pytz in /Library/Python/2.7/site-packages ). How is it getting that path for the old site-packages folder? Why won't it install it in the correct location for the python install it's using? I'm getting several other issues since promoting /usr/local/bin but I think if I understand this I'll be able to get somewhere. Can anyone see what's happening? If you need any more info I'll be happy to provide it.

We have a content management system we install for all our apps we build, but we are finding it incredibly painful as our hosting provider requires that we change the default 404 error page from the default settings everytime we create a site. Is there an easy way within IIS to automatically apply this same default directory within each website so we dont need to edit it on every website we build ? thanks in advance

    In one tablet computer yesterday I make the usually automatic updates from ms. This tablet have comodo firewall, and and old nod32. After that I notice very soon, that something start sending hundred smtp e-mail the moment the tablet computer is connected to the internet. Also the previous t time I have make updates, some 'virus' gets on the computer but I find very easy and stop it from run. I find using the autostart from sysinternals, and the process explorer. This virus has also break the automatic update from ms, and lost a lot of time to fix it. This is my usually practice when some call me to delete a virus from xp, I use the process explorer and autostart to locate the program, and delete it from everywhere. How ever the last one is so hard to locate. 0.I delete everything from temp directorys and search for suspicious files everywhere, run the nod32, 1.I use the TCPView to see witch program sending the smpt (I see hundred open smpt connections sending emails) but the SMTP was opened by the main service program. 2. I use the process monitor to locate whats happens but find again the main service that do the job. 3.I start delete many thinks on process explorer, but did not found the one that send the emails 4.I open many times the autorun but did not find there also something suspicion, I stop some thinks, but nothing happends. 5.From the last time that I suspect that this virus come to my computer and I partial remove it, he has broke my windows update, to fix it I lost a lot of time, searching on Internet for the error - it was just a register to a dll. 6.From what I suspect something is trigger after the ms update. 7.For the moment I block the email ports, and try to find a way to locate it. I like to notice here that everything is genius - and I mean everything. I believe that this virus pass from a page, or from an e-mail that this computer receive it in the past. Any help or information are appreciate. If you know anything similar, if you know how this virus send emails and how can I locate it, if you know any anti-virus anti-spyware program that maybe can find it. If you know how a virus gets after the ms updates. Million thanks.

  • Simple tool to graph memory usage?

    Is there a script that will show memory usage as a graph, for example as a pie-chart, with each process being being a separate slice? I'm not looking for something like Munin to graph memory usage over time, but rather show the memory usage per-process at a single point in time. To make my request even more obscure, it is for a headless server (so no X applications). The simplest way would be to write a PNG file, or possibly an HTML file (which could use Javascript to allow the filtering of processes, changing between graph-types and so on)

  • Is there an equivalent command for 'init.d/networking restart' in OS X

    From time to time, I've encountered issues with OS X clients' network connections (Wired and Wireless, Leopard/Snow Leopard) where nothing will fix the issue, until you reboot. Is there a particular 'network service/process' I should be watching out for? I was thinking it would be useful to know of a command that will reset a 'network connection' type service/process (same as running a sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart). Thanks!

    I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card? It's worth noting that the destination is just another vhost on the same apache instance, but the vhost (http://api.myservice.org) is serving passenger (mod_rails) I was thinking that maybe there's some startup issues with the passenger workers not being ready during a graceful restart?   • issue with eclipse after checking out project from svn

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot or fix the issue will be greatly appreciated. Note: I tried changing the project file manually but now my project files are being displayed in separate directories inside the trunk.

  • kvm and qemu host: Is there a limit for max CPUs (Ubuntu 10.04)?

    Today we encountered a really strange behaviour on two identical kvm and qemu hosts. The host systems each have 4 x 10 Cores, which means that 40 physical cores are displayed as 80 within the operating system (Ubuntu Linux 10.04 64 Bit). We started a Windows 2003 32 Bit VM (1 CPU, 1 GB RAM, we changed those values multiple times) on one of the nodes and noticed that it took 15 minutes until the boot process began. During those 15 minutes, a black screen is shown and nothing happens. libvirt and the host system show that the qemu-kvm process for the guest is almost idling. stracing this process only shows some FUTEX entries, but nothing special. After those 15 minutes, the Windows VM suddenly starts booting and the Windows logo occurs. After a few seconds, the VM is ready to be used. The VM itself is very performant, so this is no performance issue. We tried to pin the CPUs with the virsh and taskset tools, but this only made things worse. When we boot the Windows VM with a Linux Live CD there is also a black screen for several minutes, but not as long as 15. When booting another VM on this host (Ubuntu 10.04) it also has the black screen problem, and also here the black screen is only shown for 2-3 minutes (instead of 15). So, summerinzing this: Each guest on each of those identical nodes suffers from idling a few minutes after being started. After a few minutes, the boot process suddenly starts. We have observed that the idling time happens right after the bios of the guest was initialized. One of our employees had the idea to limit the amount of CPUs with maxcpus=40 (because of 40 physical cores existing) within Grub (kernel parameter) and suddenly the "black-screen-idling"-behaviour disappeared. Searching the KVM and Qemu mailing lists, the internet, forums, serverfault and other various sites for known bugs etc. showed no useful results. Even asking in the dev IRC channels brought no new ideas. The people there recommend us to use CPU pinning, but as stated before it didn't help. My question is now: Is there a sort of limit of CPUs for a qemu or kvm host system? Browsing the source code of those two tools showed that KVM would send a warning if your host has more than 255 CPUs. But we are not even scratching on that limit.     Anyone have any experience rebuilding OWA? I am under the impression that this KB contains the process http://support.microsoft.com/?ID=280823 under the section "Method 1: Reset the HighWaterMarks" I inherited an Exchange box that was never patched, and after getting up to date I'm getting some permissions issues. If anyone has any warnings about using the above process let me know. Alternatively, can I simply uninstall and reinstall OWA from the Exchange 2003 CD?

  • Windows Media Player Network Sharing eating lots of CPU

    There is a process, wmpnetwk.exe, which sometimes goes crazy and starts eating like 60-70% CPU. If I kill the process it just comes back again, so the only solution I've found is to stop the WMPNetworkSvc service, which makes the whole thing stop. I don't use WMP, so I don't care if this is disabled, but I'd like to know what's causing it (Google has revealed that it also happened to other people), and if there's a more permanent way of fixing the problem.

    Once I have a dump of a computer crash/freeze, what are some tools and steps to take in order to troubleshoot crash based off of the dump itself? I am looking for tools to isolate what processes or issues are causing the crash, and also good techniques in troubleshoot the actual dump itself. Once I've determined what the "troublesome" process has been, what do I do to troubleshoot the issue? For example if I determine process foo.exe or bar.dll etc, is the problematic file how do I determine what can be done?
