<b>Linux Journal:</b> "After a recent O/S version upgrade (to openSUSE 11.2) I noticed that bash started being a bit more intelligent when I did something stupid: it started giving me a useful error message..."
Building a website has always been a topic that frightened me a bit as I always thought there was a lot of computer stuff I'd need to know. Fortunately you don't need to learn the computer language to do this.
For a moth ago, i took a clean install of ubuntu 13.10, i formated the entire hard drive that contained windows 8 and installed ubuntu. Now i want to reinstall windows 8, but when i boot up with a bootable usb, my computer wont recognize the bootable usb unless its a bootable linux usb... i have done a little bit research and i think it have something with MBR to do, but i have no idea what to do!

At my company, the programmers who sit in the same area are constantly fighting over whether the lights stay on or off. Because there is no official policy it makes it a particularly sticky situation.
We are a typical cube-farm and we have those typical cube-farm fluorescent lights and smaller ones at our desks. With the lights off, it is difficult to read and you would probably need to turn on your desk light (which some people do anyway). All programmers in our department do most of their reading on their monitor because of the nature of our business.
Some feel that we should have a vote to decide whether the lights stay on or off. A couple who prefer 'lights on' feel that the vote would need to be unanimous to turn them off as having them on is the more natural office setting. Those who want them off point out that all other departments keep their lights off.
I have heard all of the arguments:
-Fluorescent lights cause eye strain
-Reading in dark causes eye strain
-The desk lights can be used if light is needed
-People from other departments feel uncomfortable approaching us in the "dark"
-The monitors are harder to see in the light
...
Right now, some of the developers turn off the lights and some turn them on. It really just depends who last walked by the switch. I am a bit sick of the controversy as it feels a bit childish at the moment. I'm tired of hearing about it and I'm tired of having to talk about it. I tried to help them decide but as I explained, voting wasn't enough.
Do other programming departments have this same argument?
What is the standard or traditionally accepted option in a programming area?
Are there any good reasons for one way or the other outside of preference?
How can we decide fairly?
EDIT
Just a little more info...
We do not have clients/visitors come into our office.
We do have windows and hall lights that make our environment plenty bearable with the lights off. It kind of resembles a meeting room that has the lights off during a powerpoint presentation.
I recent changed from ubuntu to xubuntu 12.04. The install worked great for a few days, but suddenly the left mouse button stopped working. The right click and scroll bars work fine.
After a bit of experimenting I discovered that the problem only happens when I set the session to Xubuntu at login. The mouse also works fine in my dual-booted windows vista.
What could make my mouse stop working like that?
In the interest of conserving bandwidth, I'm considering mounting a VirtualBox host's /var/cache/apt as /var/cache/apt in the guest. Both host and guest are Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit. Would there be any negative consequences to doing this?
I'm aware of the more robust solutions like apt-proxy, but I'd prefer this simpler solution if it's possible in order to spare the host the overhead of running extra services.
Introduction It's always an honor to present anywhere. Presenting at the PASS Summit is a special honor. I delivered three presentations last month: Database Design for Developers SSIS Design Patterns, Part 2 A Lightning Talk on SSIS Database Design for Developers First, a bit of explanation (defense): I submitted this abstract to the PASS Abstracts folks by mistake . I kid you not. Inspired by Adam Machanic ( Blog | @AdamMachanic ) I maintain a document of current presentations. I've recently published...(read more)
Now that Google has released news regarding the inclusion of website's speed as one of the factors responsible for website search engine ranking, it is obvious that most website owners would get want delve into matter, a bit more deep. According to the statement, it is clear that the websites having lower loading speed would have less probability of making their way to the search engine result pages than those that load up faster.
Ubuntu 12.10 32-bit upgrade (dual boot with Win-7).
Custom PC, onboard NVidia graphics.
Motherboard: ECS EliteGroup GF8200A Black Series
"HP LaserJet 3015" multifunction printer.
Graphics printing fine with UB12.04, VERY SLOW on UB12.10.
Per an article ran:
~$ sudo apt-get install mesa-utils
~$ glxinfo | grep renderer
Output:
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 8200/integrated/SSE2/3DNOW!
Do I need to get a graphics card to fix or will software tweaks solve this?
I'm fairly new to game development, and have been messing around with Slick2D. Currently, my map consists of objects that are represented as rectangles. If I wanted to use am image simlar to:
How would I be able to use this image to make a level? That question is a bit vague, but like I said, I'm new to game development and am not familiar with terminology or procedures. But going along with this question, how would I also use non-rectangular objects/platforms?
Thanks

In Rhythmbox's Preferences, you can change the "Preferred Format" for Music to MPEG Layer 3 Audio, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, or MPEG 4 Audio. However, despite there being a Settings button, it does not become enabled for any of these choices. (I have installed all of the gstreamer plugins, but this has made no difference.) So how can you change the "Preferred Format", for example to change the bit rate or the quality setting?
I'm buying a few C++ books after moving from Java. I obviously want to read the reference manual from the man himself, though I cannot tell the difference between these two editions. The special edition is ten pages shorter than the third edition. However, the special edition is recommended over the third edition and it seems this version covers the ASCII standard when the other edition does not.
Can anyone shed a bit of light on this?
I have read from here how to install oracle 10g xe in ubuntu 10.x but not in 11.04 (64 bit). But with 11.04 it does not work anymore because of dependency exceptions. So, how to install oracle 10g xe in ubuntu 11.04?
I even found some variant how to fix it from here but in my case it does not work - the same exception take place:
oracle-xe-universal:i386 depends on
libc6 (= 2.3.2); however: Package
libc6:i386 is not installed.
Brought to the forefront in 2010 with Stuxnet, the infamous worm aimed at sabotaging industrial infrastructure, the use of stolen digital certificates is relatively new. Stuxnet's creators digitally signed its rootkit components with stolen certificates from JMicron and RealTek, a pair of semiconductor manufacturers. The worm's existence and complexity caught the security community by surprise. In fact, many researchers predicted that malware creators would begin adopting the same technique to work around driver signature enforcement employed by Microsoft in its 64-bit versions of Windows V...
I followed the procedure mentioned at Installing Ubuntu on a Pre-Installed Windows 8 (64-bit) System (UEFI Supported) on toshiba satellite laptop.
also tried the boot-repair and logs @ http://paste.ubuntu.com/6327398/
Its not booting to windows as well as ubuntu. It goes to grub command prompt.
When on initial screen it briefly shows error message as failed to open /efi/Microsoft/boot/grubx64.
Please advise.
EDIT : Secure boot in on and boot mode is UEFI Boot
I am a bit lost, I am using futile and I am just trying to run the demo. But I keep getting UnityEngine.Vector2 does not contian a definition for "Set" in just one class, my using statments are:
using System;
using UnityEngine;
using System.Collections;
using System.Collections.Generic;
When I look at the documents, I see that Set is a function http://docs.unity3d.com/Documentation/ScriptReference/Vector2.html
I am using version 3.4.2 (in futile its happening in just the FAtlas class)

Hi. Recently I've installed ubuntu 10.10 32-bit on my dell inspiron i14r-2265, but it looks like brightness control is not working. I can change it "programmatically" (FN + brightness key), though actual screen brightness shows no effect.
I've tried this advice but it didn't work for me.
I actually have no idea how it works (if hardware is not responsive to software, the way I see it), so can someone suggest a solution please?
