Setting objects (not users) inactive after period of time in asp.net mvc

This question is mainly to verify my current idea. I have a series of objects which I want to be active for a specified amount of time. For instance objects like ads which are shown in the ad space only for the amount of time bought, objects in search results which should only pop up when active, and frontpage posts which should be set to inactive after a prespecified time. My current idea is to just give those type of objects a StartDate and EndDate and filter the search routines to only show results which fall in the range StartDate < currentDate < EndDate. Is this the normal structure or should there be some sort of auto-routine which routinely checks for objects which are "over-time" and set a property "inactive" to true or something. Seems like this approach is such a hassle since I need a checker which runs say, every 5 minutes, to scan all DB objects. Seems like a bad idea to me. So is the first structure the most commonly used or are there any other options? When searching on google or SO the search queries only return results setting users inactive.

Why doesn't this work?

What I am trying to accomplish is using jQuery UI dialog method from my own JavaScript source code file. Implements an Undo/Redo in MVC

Hello, I have a Java application and I want to implement an Undo/Redo option. the value that I want to stock and that I want to be able to recover is an integer. My Class Model implements the interface StateEditable and I have to redefine the 2 functions restoreState(Hashtable<?, ?> state) and storeState(Hashtable<Object, Object> state) but I don't know what to put on them. It will be really great if somebody can help me to do that. Custom Model Validator for MVC

I am trying to add a custom model validation at the property level but need to pass in two values. Below is my class definition and validation implementation. When it runs, the "value" in the IsValid method is always null. I can get this working at the class level but the property level is causing me issues. What am I missing? Class 'org.springframework.http.converter.ResourceHttpMessageConverter' not found - how to correct?

Eclipse STS is reporting I have problem with my spring project. It's a fresh project generated from the Spring Web MVC Project Template (File-New-Spring Template Project-Spring Web MVC ). When I create the project it has no problems - it's only once I modify the pom (by adding the hibernate dependencies) that STS then picks up the spring problem. Strangely if I revert the pom the problem remains. Also I can run the project on a spring tc server and all works correctly. Any ideas how I can satisfy this problem report? Now my controller has a Url property of type UrlHelper but cannot really access this as far as I can tell. What is the most efficient way to register my UrlHelper dependency (using fluent configuration)?

ASP.NET MVC download image rather than display in browser

Rather than displaying a PNG in the browser window, I'd like the action result to trigger the file download dialogue box (you know the open, save as, etc). I can get this to work with the code below using an unknown content type, but the user then has to type in .png at the end of the file name. ASP.NET MVC Cookie loses value when page is changed

When a user logs in to my site, I create a cookie with some info in it. However, whenever they change page from logging in, the cookie loses it's value. Cookie is still there but it's empty. I've checked my code and the cookie doesn't get rewritten by anything I've done. Does anyone have any idea to why the cookie becomes empty when the page is changed?

Is there some sort of annotation that would allow the method to appear to accept raw MessageResponse objects but in actuality work the same as shown below? MVC actionlink posting List of complex type

I have an actionlink that on click im passing a List of objects to a controller action. Example: View: Html.ActionLink("TestLink", "TestMethod", "Test", Model.SampleList, null) TestController: public ActionResult TestMethod(List sampleList) { return View(sampleList); } When I do this I get a null sampleList. I can pass a single complex object fine just not a collection of it. Do I need the correct routing for this? The reason I'm doing this is instead of passing an id and do a look up in the controller action, I just pass in the data.

Separate functionality depending on Role in ASP.NET MVC

I'm looking for an elegant pattern to solve this problem: I have several user roles in my system, and for many of my controller actions, I need to deal with slightly different data. For example, take /Users/Edit/1 This allows a Moderator to edit a users email address, but Administrators to edit a user's email address and password. I'd like a design for separating the two different bits of action code for the GET and the POST. Solutions I've come up with so far are: Switch inside each method, however this doesn't really help when i want different model arguments on the POST :( Custom controller factory which chooses a UsersController_ForModerators and UsersController_ForAdmins instead of just UsersController from the controller name and current user role Custom action invoker which choose the Edit_ForModerators method in a similar way to above Have an IUsersController and register a different implementation of it in my IoC container as a named instance based on Role Build an implementation of the controller at runtime using Castle DynamicProxy and manipulate the methods to those from role-based implementations Im preferring the named IoC instance route atm as it means all my urls/routing will work seamlessly. Ideas? Suggestions?

Does using web services to expose a .NET DAL add security?

Currently my employer deploys a web application over 3 servers. DB - No public route Web Service DAL - No public route Web Server - Public route The reason for this is the theory that if the web server is compromised, they don't arrive at the DB directly, but instead arrive at the DAL box. To my mind, as the DAL box and Web Sever box - both run windows/IIS - if the public box has been compromised, the same exploit would likely work on the DAL box - therefore I do not see this as a real security benefit. I would like to propose we remove the middle machine and allow the web server to connect directly to the database. Is this middle box really a benefit?

MVC 3 Remote Validation jQuery error on submit

I seem to have a weird issue with remote validation on my project. I am doing a simple validation check on an email field to ensure that it is unique. I've noticed that unless I put the cursor into the textbox and then remove it to trigger the validation at least once before submitting my form I will get a javascript error. e[h] is not a function jquery.min.js line 3 If I try to resubmit the form after the above error is returned everything works as expected. It's almost like the form tried to submit before waiting for the validation to return or something. Am I required to silently fire off a remote validation request on submit before submitting my form? Below is a snapshot of the code I'm using: (I've also tried GET instead of POST but I get the same result). As mentioned above, the code works fine but the form returns a jquery error unless the validation is triggered at least once. How do I 'donut cache' in ASP.NET MVC for something more than a date

All the examples for donut caching I've seen are just like this : <%= Html.Substitute( c => DateTime.Now.ToString() )%> Thats fine if I just want the date, but what other options are there? I know there is a delegate 'MvcSubstitutionCallback' which has the following signature : public delegate string MvcSubstitutionCallback(HttpContextBase httpContext); but RenderAction and RenderPartial returns void so i cant just return them from the delegate method. How can I effectively use this callback for more complex situations. I've looked at both of Phil Haacked's articles here and here, but neither seems to do exactly what I want.

I'm trying to generate the following table: <table> <tr class="person"> <td>First 1</td> <td>Last 1</td> <td>1</td> </tr> <tr class="child"> <td>First 1</td> <td>Last 1</td> <td>1</td> </tr> <tr class="child"> <td>First 2</td> <td>Last 2</td> <td>2</td> </tr> ... ... </table> Each person is a row and each of their children would be individual rows under the person row. This would repeat for each person in IEnumerable<Person>. Are there any grids or components that generate a table like this? I found MvcContrib's grid component, but it doesn't appear to be able to generate these child rows. Is there a way to extend MvcContrib's grid to do this?

I've heard things about Unit of Work and creating a session per web request and flushing it at the end. From what I can tell, my current implementation isn't doing any of this. It is basically relying on the Repository to grab the session from the session factory and use it to run the queries. Are there any pitfalls to doing database access this way?

Hello, I have an application that have EF 16 classes that share this information: They all are classes only with a key field and a description. I think it should be a waste if I make a controller with just 1 method just to present a form to fill these classes info, then I was thinking in to make a generic form(with key, description) and dynamically fill the right class through a sort of selection the selected info in any way, any good suggestion or pattern to do that? Where the generic methods should be located.

For example: $("input[name=selectalldepartment]").change(function() { var str = $('input[name=selectalldepartment]:checked').val(); $(".radiolist[value='" + str + "']").attr("checked", true); }); I've tried everything I know how to do, but the jQuery just doesnt fire. (I've added alerts to the jQuery code to see if it actually gets called, and it does not). Any thoughts?! Thanks!
