• Can I delete Generic kernel if I use Generic

  I currently can't update my release as there is not enough space on boot. • how to get the update manager window visible?

  I can see from the launcher that the Update Manager is running - it has the little triangle by it. However, I am having trouble seeing the window. If I click on it from one desktop, it switches to another, so I assume that the Update Manager has its window on that other desktop, but it still doesn't show anything. If I click alt-tab to switch between apps, I can see that the Update Manager is there, but selecting it just shows me a blank screen. Also, when I select it, while still holding the alt-key, I see the top menu bar switch to 'Update Manager', but when I release alt, it changes back to Ubuntu Desktop. It's almost like the app is off the screen somewhere, perhaps with just a single pixel showing or something like that. disclaimer: One thing that might be affecting things is that I have 'focus follows mouse' configured, which makes things a bit funky with the menu not being on the window, where it should be (perhaps there's a way to put it back with the window?) - I like to be able to type into background windows, and manually control which window is in the foreground.

  Oracle's Secure Enterprise Search is part of PeopleSoft now.  It is provided as part of the Peopltools platform as an appliance, and is used with applications starting with release 9.2.  Secure Enterprise Search is a rich and powerful search product that can enhance search and navigation in PeopleSoft applications.  It also provides useful features like facets and filtering that are common in consumer search engines.Several questions have arisen about the deployment of SES and how to administer it and insure optimum performance.  People have also asked about what versions are supported on various platforms.  To address the most common of these questions, we are posting this list of tips.Platform SupportSES 11.1.2.2 does not support some of the platforms supported by PeopleTools, such as Windows 2012 and AIX 7.1. However, PeopleSoft and SES can use different operating system platforms when SES is deployed on a separate machine.SES 11.2.2.2 will have the required platform support for PT 8.53 in the future. We are planning to certify PT 8.53 once the testing is complete in 8.54 development and all platform support is released for 11.2.2.2.ArchitectureWe recommend running SES on a separate machine (from your apps) for two reasons:1.    SES bundles specific WebLogic, Java, and Oracle DB versions and might need different OS patches at a minimum than PeopleSoft. By having SES run on a different machine, these pre-requisites can be managed better through their lifecycle independenly for PeopleSoft and SES.2.    SES is resource intensive - it runs it's own WebLogic and Oracle database. By having SES run on its own machine, sufficient resources can be allocated to SES and free the PeopleSoft servers from impacts of SES load patterns.We will be providing a comprehensive red paper covering PeopleSoft/SES administration in the near future, but until that is published, we'll post tips on this blog.

• Video lags/freezes in SMPlayer and VLC

  When I try to play my video files in SMPlayer it works fine but as soon as I switch to fullscreen mode(16:9) following thing happens: 1) Video starts lagging. 2) Audio and video goes out of sync. 3) CPU usage rises to ~50%. 4) SMPlayer starts to hang. My current SMPlayer configuration: 1)Video Output Driver = x11(slow) 2)Audio Output Driver = alsa(0.0-HDA Intel) 3)Cache = 8192 KB 4)Threads for decoding(MPEG-1/2 and H.264 only = 2 Things I tried solve this problem: 1) Tried changing video o/p driver to xv,gl. 2) Tried changing audio o/p driver to pulse. 3) Tried increasing cache size and also tried using nocache. Everything works fine on windows but I don't want to switch to windows just to play video files. My system config: Acer Aspire One D270 Atom N2600(Cedar Trail) 1.6GHz 2GB Memory Intel GMA 3600 graphics. Ubuntu 12.04 Kernel Release: 3.2.0-23-generic-pae Rest all things are working fine I have no resolution issue, bluetooth, wireless also working fine. • Hobbyist programmer releasing software with a donate button

  I'd like to start this with a disclaimer that I realize that a full, clear-cut answer should be sought out by a lawyer. I am more so curious about what other users of this community have done Say that I had a small program that I had developed for fun, that I wished to release to the public. I'll drop it out there with one of the various open-source licenses, and probably put it up on SourceForge or Git in case if anybody should ever want to fork/maintain/check out code. Also say that I wanted to accept donations for the project, with absolutely 0 expectation that people will send any money. However, if somebody donated in order to buy me a beer or a pizza for the work that they liked, I would accept gladly. The question, then, is what are the general requirements of accepting donations? Can it go into a personal account with no questions asked as a "gift," or do I need to setup an LLC to avoid any taxation issues? (US citizen here). Again, yes this should be lawyer discussed, but I also know that many projects that I see have the ability to donate, and assume that the community probably has a decent amount of experience in this regard.

• How do I increase the open files limit for a non-root user?

  This is happening on Ubuntu Release 12.04 (precise) 64-bit Kernel Linux 3.2.0-25-virtual I'm trying to increase the number of open files allowed for a user. This is for an my ecplise java application where the current limit of 1024 is not enough. According to the posts I've found so far, I should be able to put lines into /etc/security/limits.conf like this; soft nofile 4096 hard nofile 4096 to increase the number of open files allowed for all users. But, that's not working for me, and I think the problem is not related to that file. For all users, the default limit is 1024, regardless of what is in /etc/security/limits.conf (I have been rebooting after changing that file) $ ulimit -n 1024 Now, despite the entries in /etc/security/limits.conf I can't increase that; $ ulimit -n 2048 -bash: ulimit: open files: cannot modify limit: Operation not permitted The weird part is that I can change the limit downwards, but can't change it upwards - even to go back to a number which is below the original limit; $ ulimit -n 800 $ ulimit -n 800 $ ulimit -n 900 -bash: ulimit: open files: cannot modify limit: Operation not permitted As root, I can change that limit to whatever I want, up or down. It doesn't even seem to care about the supposedly system-wide limit in /proc/sys/fs/file-max # cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max 188897 # ulimit -n 188898 # ulimit -n 188898 So far, I haven't found any way to increase the open files limit for a non-root user, and I really don't want to be running my application as root. How should I properly do this? I have looked at all the posted and tried the given options but no luck!

• svcbundle for easier SMF manifest creation

  One of the new features we've introduced in Oracle Solaris 11.1 is a new utility called svcbundle. This utility allows for the easy creation of Service Management Facility (SMF) manifests and profiles, allowing you to take advantage of the benefits of automatic application restart without requiring you to have full knowledge of the XML file format that is used when integrating with the SMF. Integrating into SMF is one of the easiest and most obvious ways to take advantage of some of the mission critical aspects of the operating system, but many customers were often finding the initial learning curve of creating an XML manifest to be too hard. With the release of Oracle Solaris 11 11/11, SMF had a more integral part to play as more and more system configuration was starting to use the SMF configuration repository for the backend storage. This provides a number of aspects, including the ability to carefully manage customized administrative configuration, site specific configuration, and vendor provided configuration at different layers, helping to preserve them during system update. I've written a new article, Using svcbundle to Create SMF Manifests and Profiles in Oracle Solaris 11, to give you a feel for the help we can provide in converting your applications over to SMF, or doing some site wide configuration using profiles. • 9 Gigapixel Photo Captures 84 Million Stars

  The European Southern Observatory has released an absolutely enormous picture of the center of the Milky Way captured by their VISTA telescope–the image is 9 gigapixels and captures over 84 million stars. From the press release: The large mirror, wide field of view and very sensitive infrared detectors of ESO’s 4.1-metre Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) make it by far the best tool for this job. The team of astronomers is using data from the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea programme (VVV), one of six public surveys carried out with VISTA. The data have been used to create a monumental 108 200 by 81 500 pixel colour image containing nearly nine billion pixels. This is one of the biggest astronomical images ever produced. The team has now used these data to compile the largest catalogue of the central concentration of stars in the Milky Way ever created. • How successful is GPL in reaching its goals?

  There are, broadly, two types of FOSS licenses when it relates to commercial usage of the code - let's say the GPL-type and the BSD-type. The first is, broadly, restrictive about commercial usage (by usage I also mean modification and redistribution, as well as creating derived works, etc.) of the code under the license, and the second is much more permissive. As I understand, the idea behind GPL-type licenses is to encourage people to abandon the proprietary software model and instead convert to the FOSS code, and the license is the instrument to entice them to do so - i.e. "you can use this nice software, but only if you agree to come to our camp and play by our rules". What I want to ask is - was this strategy successful so far? I.e. are there any major achievements in the form of some big project going from closed to open because of GPL or some software being developed in the open only because GPL made it so? How big is the impact of this strategy - compared, say, to the world where everybody would have BSD-type licenses or release all open-source code under public domain? Note that I am not asking if FOSS model is successful - this is beyond question. What I am asking is if the specific way of enticing people to convert from proprietary to FOSS used by GPL-type and not used by BSD-type licenses was successful. I also don't ask about the merits of GPL itself as the license - just about the fact of its effectiveness.

• Pandaboard crash on startup or freeze after minutes

  I just received my Pandaboard ES (rev B) and I am having trouble after installing ubuntu-omap4-addons. Once I copied the image ubuntu-12.04-preinstalled-desktop-armhf+omap4.img on my sd card and boot the pandaboard with it, I run the following commands: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tiomap-dev/release sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo apt-get install ubuntu-omap4-extras At the end of the installation of ubuntu-omap4-extras, Ubuntu tells me that a problem occurs when the console displays: ldconfig deferred processing now taking place Clicking on "report the problem" tell me that the problem concerns pvr-omap4-dkms. I read somewhere that this can happen and it is better to reinstall pvr-omap4-dkms. Which I am doing by running: sudo apt-get install --reinstall pvr-omap4-dkms I reboot. Then the board has sometimes difficulties to start Ubuntu: it freezes during the loading page, only action I can do is unplugging the board to start it again. Some other times, Ubuntu load successfully but then freeze at another random time, in the range 20 - 40 minutes. I searched on internet for similar bug and found this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-ti-omap4/+bug/971091 So I typed this in: update-rc.d ondemand disable apt-get -y install cpufrequtils echo 'ENABLE="true" GOVERNOR="performance" MAX_SPEED="0" MIN_SPEED="0"' > /etc/default/cpufrequtils cpufreq-set -r -g performance reboot But it doesn't seems to fix the bug. • Data recovery on Ubuntu 11.10?! (after crashing with Seagate 320GB)

  Just installed 11.10 last week and decided to transfer iTunes music (from Windows dual boot) to my Seagate 320GB. I left it in, restarted, clicked Ubuntu at the boot screen, and then it froze after a few lines of code! I think I got to 3.7086 or something before I pressed CTRL+ALT+DEL and the system restarted after another few lines of code. I am completely new to Ubuntu so after Googling, I made a live CD with 10.04, the most stable release I've heard, and I'm typing this from there now. However, when I go to mount my partition, only the Windows Vista partition (308GB) is there! It has all my Windows files but my Ubuntu 11.10 ones are nowhere to be found. I need to restore these pictures I transferred from my camera using Shotwell the other day... any help is appreciated! p.s. 11.10 has never crashed on me in my trial week, so I'm guessing it's the Seagate hard drive's fault. However, now I'm running it on 10.04 and it works fine.

• What is the "default" software license?

  If I release some code and binaries, but I don't include any license at all with it, what are the legal terms that apply by default (in the US, where I am). I know that I automatically have copyright without doing anything, but what restrictions are there on it? If I upload my code to github and announce it as a free download / contribute at will, then are people allowed to modify and close source my work? I haven't said that they cannot, as a GPL would, but I don't feel that it would by default be acceptable to steal my work either. So what can and cannot people do with code that is freely available, but has absolutely no licensing terms attached? By the way, I know that it would be a good idea for me to pick a license and apply it to my code soon, but I'm still curious about this. Edit Thanks! So it looks like the consensus is that it starts out very restricted, and then my actions imply any further rights. If I just put software on my website with no security, it would be an infringement to download it. If I post a link to that download on a forum, then that would implicitly give permission to use it for free, but not distribute it or its derivatives (but you can modify it for your own use). If I put it on GitHub, then it is conveyed as FOSS. Again, this is probably not codified exactly in law but may be enough to be defensible in court. It's still a good idea to post a complete license to be safe.

• Why is Ubuntu One slow to sync in 11.10, either backup or any sub-folder contents?

  I have been trying to sync my documents folder of 1.4GB, it still hasn't worked and it has been syncing for a month. The top level syncs, files and folders in the Document folders, but contents of sub-folders just hang. (Gave up and stopped syncing this folder) However,I have tried using the backup facility in 11.10, to backup to Ubuntu One.... I upgraded my HDD space in Ubuntu One. It has been going now for 24hours-ish and only backed up what looks like a couple of percent. (By the way what an excellent idea to backup to Ubuntu One, if only we could get it to actually work! :-o) The odd thing is I can sync to drop box within hours, rather than months. This is bad, and has been an issue since Ubuntu One's release. I have reported this problem and there were promises in later releases this would be fixed, but it hasn't. Canonical cannot help either... I posted on several blogs, a lot of people have the same problem but no fixes. So do I use dropbox or another service, until it is sorted, as Ubuntu does not seem to see this as an issue, I think a fix will be a long time in coming. (However,I love the potential of Ubuntu One and the integration with the OS) Yes my internet speeds are fine, etc... :-) No firewall (sudo ufw status: STATUS: INACTIVE), No Proxy, etc NB: I have raised this as a separate question to others posted here, because my question relates to Ubuntu 11.10, though I have commented elsewhere for help. Plus my question also relates to deja-dup backup to Ubuntu One. Thanks

• How to help FGLRX detect a device

  I have HD 4850 card, Ubuntu 12.10 and installed legacy drivers using makson96 ppa. The issue is, that FGLRX can not detect my device and loads vesa bios. I had the same problem on ubuntu 11.10, 12.04 versions. I want to manually help fglrx find a matching device to load as it shoudld do.
