  • USB mouse shuts down the laptop!

    For the past two days, whenever I plug in my USB mouse (which has been working for a long time, previously) into the laptop, my computer restarts! I tried changing mice, but the same thing happens. I have 3 ports, usually, I try one port and the laser does not come on, then I try another one and the laser comes and and off, then I again take out and put it in any port and the damn thing just turns off the computer. Specs: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, 4GB RAM, Fujitsu 532ah i5 laptop

  • Are Noise-Canceling headphones effective?

    I work in a pretty noisy environment, lots of noise near me like the TV and people yelling and talking in really loud voices. It makes it really hard to concentrate and since I can't really move my PC to another part of the house I was thinking of getting a decent pair of noise-canceling headphones. I've never owned or used a pair before so I wanted to ask, do they block outside noise completely? As in, I'll hear nothing but silence as long as I'm wearing them?

    Hi All, I've known for a long time that F4 key drops down the list in a combo box(drop down) in windows applications. In I.E, the address box drops down if you press F4 anywhere in the page. This is NOT what I had expected, though. However, what I want to know is, in Windows(at least), what is the key combination that will drop down the list of a drop down control(combo box) in a web browser (say, Firefox or Chrome) ?     Every day we have a long running catalog backup process, and I found there is no way to restore a file during the backup. So, Bacula is designed to block the restore while back is running? I'm using a disk backup, I couldn't understand why I can't restore file from early written volumes as the back process is not supposed to writing on the same volume file.

    Clients that have been reporting their state fine suddenly start reporting "Windows 0.0" for their OS and "Not yet contacted" for their Last Contacted date even though previously these values were present and correct. Any idea why this might be happening? I've spend a long time playing with wsauclt etc and just when I think I've the problem it comes back again! Thanks.

  • Watchguard XTM blocking login attempts

    routinely I'm seeing lots of login attempts to my mail server trying out various login names starting from A to Z coming from the one IP on one day and another IP on another day. Is there any means to detect this type of activities and block accordingly? I asked Watchguard and it appears they don't support this on their XTM series. Anything else I can do other than to have a super long password?

  • Black Screen After Sleep (Win 8)

    I have an SSD only, Intel HD Graphics only, Ultrabook running on Windows 8 64-bit and after I turn it back on, after a long sleep of a few hours, the screen remains black even though the power is on (the fan and keyboard backlight are on). I have to force a shut down and switch it back on to use it normally again. Hibernation and hybrid-sleep are turned off. It comes out of sleep of less than an hour just fine. Any advise? Mark

  • Convert a CSV file to a XLS file on the linux command line?

    I'm using Debian Linux and I want to convert a CSV file to an Excel XLS Spreadsheet file. The catdoc package includes the xls2csv command that converts from XLS to CSV. However it doesn't do the reverse. Since I just have a CSV file, I don't care about formatting or anything like that. I'm not worried if it only generates a very simple XLS file, and doesn't support the fancy new versions. Just so long as it's an XLS spreadsheet.

  • Remote Program (via ssh) suspends when leaving client computer

    I'm working with MATLAB on a remote computer logging in via ssh -X remotepc and running matlab like matlab &. When I start a long-running process and leave the computer, it seems to suspend the process (after like 30mins being away) such that there is nearly no progress over night. As soon as I come back and wake up the client, the remote process continues with the calculation. I can see this from the load-average values (uptime) Why is that and how can I change this behaviour?

  • How do I increase copy/paste buffer size in Linux

    Hi all, I'm trying to copy and paste lines of code to the linux terminal. However, I've noticed that when the copied text is too long (let's say, 60 or more lines), it gets trimmed and altered in an apparently random way (e.g. some characters missing). I found the same problem in Ubuntu Karmic Koala, Fedora 10 and Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope. Any clue why this happens and if I can increase the size of safely copy/pasteable text? Thanks!

  • Sort music files by disc number in Vista

    I'm sitting under Vista and the problem is -- though I can see disc number of track in Winamp or some other multimedia players, I cannot sort files by disc number in Windows Explorer. I've scanned through the whole long list of available properties of files but haven't found "disc number" or similar property. So is there any way to sort tracks by disc number in Windows Explorer, and if there is, then how to do it?

    Whenever I drag or resize a window near any edge or corner of either monitor, Windows wants to maximize or resize the window for me in several different ways: dragging a window near a corner offers resize to full-screen dragging directly to the corner offers half-screen maximize resizing to top or bottom edges offers a vertical maximize (one long strip from top to bottom) Actually, now that I think about it the 3rd one isn't so bad, its just the full and half-screen maximize features that drives me mad. Is there a registry hack to disable these settings, preferably independently?

  • Networking is broken in my VMware 10.0 VMs after upgrading to Windows 8.1

    I have a VMware Workstation 10.0 installation with several virtual networks including the default host-only and NAT networks. After upgrading to Windows 8.1, the NAT network was not working. I booted an Ubuntu VM with the default network setup that was previously working, and it sat for a long time during startup saying it was waiting for the network. After it finally started up, an ifconfig showed no IP address for eth0. How can I fix the broken network?

    I want to set up BIND for a private subdomain on a private network, like in the question here: How to configure bind for a private subdomain? My question is this - should my (linux) router act as the DNS server for this? Or should I have a seperate machine on the network acting as the DNS server? Does it not matter as long as all the machines on the network are configured to resolve to the internal DNS server?

I want to do this so I can easily add a lot of ECC memory (~20GB), and possibly more than one processor. I know that video hardware could be a problem, especially because I use 4 monitors. I should be fine with this, as long as I have two pci-e channels. Are there any downsides to doing this? Anything I'm not seeing?

  • Windows7: Gaining administrator rights in CLI without being prompted for password

    Hello, I am trying to write a script which includes disk defragmentation as one of its steps. defrag needs administrative rights to work. I tried to use runas /user:Administrator, but it always asked me for password (even though there isn't one set). The script needs to run unattended for a long time, and it needs to be started from standard user account (it is actually being run by cygwin), so I'd like to get rid of that prompt.     Is it possible, and if so, what would it take to do a hard drive disc swap? If a HD has a damaged PCB board, but the actual disc inside the drive where all the information is stored is not damaged, is it possible to take that disc and put it in another hard drive whose PCB board is not damaged? (as long as both are the same type, SATA to SATA, etc.) Can this be done at home? Any special requirements?
