• PHP mySQL database check

- by kielie
Hi guys, I am having endless troubles with duplicate entries, so I need to check the database, and if a user has already entered that day, their entry will not be submitted and they will be redirected to a landing page that tells them they have already entered that day, and that they may only enter again tomorrow. The field I would like to check is the id_number field in the database, since each user has a unique id number, so basically, if a user with the same id number submitted on the same date they should be redirected to a landing page, how would I go about doing this? I am still new to a lot of this, so please be forgiving. Thanx in advance.

• Should you use a PHP Framework?

- by christopher-mccann
I have asked before about selecting a framework but I have never actually asked should you a framework? In the past I have never used one but I am being drawn more and more to the idea to speed up development time. I am really concerned about the performance of the application though. Does anyone have any views on whether it is a good idea or not to use a framework? The performance of the apps built on top of it will be crucial. Thanks

• [PHP] DOMDocument load on a page returning 400 Bad Request status

- by PeteWilliams
Hiya, I'm trying to use the Last.fm API for an application I'm creating, but am having some problems with validation. If an API request gives an error it returns a code and message in the response XML like this: <lfm status="failed"> <error code="6">No user with that name</error> </lfm> However, the request also returns an HTTP status of 400 (or in some cases 403) which DOMDocument considers an error and so then refuses to parse the XML. Is there any way round this, so that I can retrieve the error code and message? Thanks Pete

• Debugging 500 Internal Server Error on PHP running on IIS7 cluster

- by Matthijs P
Recently my ISP switched our website to an IIS7.0 high availibility cluster. The website is running on PHP5.2.1 and I can only upload files (so no registry tweaks). I had tested the website before and everything seemed to be working, but now the checkout page fails with: 500 - Internal server error. There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed. As error messages go, this isn't very informative. I've tried: ini_set('display_errors', 1); ini_set('error_log', $file_php_can_write_to ); but both don't seem to do anything. Anyone know how to get better debugging output?

• HTTP authentication logout via PHP

- by Josef Sábl
What is the correct way to log out of HTTP authentication protected folder? There are workarounds that can achieve this, but they are potentially dangerous because they can be buggy or don't work in certain situations / browsers. That is why I am looking for correct and clean solution.

• Design Practice Retrieve Multiple Users - PHP

- by pws5068
Greetings all, I'm looking for a more efficient way to grab multiple users without too much code redundancy. I have a Users class, (here's a highly condensed representation) Class Users { function __construct() { ... ... } private static function getNew($id) { // This is all only example code $sql = "SELECT * FROM Users WHERE User_ID=?"; $user = new User(); $user->setID($id); .... return $user; } public static function getNewestUsers($count) { $sql = "SELECT * FROM Users ORDER BY Join_Date LIMIT ?"; $users = array(); // Prepared Statement Data Here while($stmt->fetch()) { $users[] = Users::getNew($id); ... } return $users; } // These have more sanity/security checks, demonstration only. function setID($id) { $this->id = $id; } function setName($name) { $this->name = $name; } ... } So clearly calling getNew() in a loop is inefficient, because it makes $count number of calls to the database each time. I would much rather select all users in a single SQL statement. The problem is that I have probably a dozen or so methods for getting arrays of users, so all of these would now need to know the names of the database columns which is repeating a lot of structure that could always change later. What are some other ways that I could approach this problem? My goals include efficiency, flexibility, scalability, and good design practice.

• Open book PHP test

- by user275074
Hi, I have a open-book test this week and I've been notified that the test will be an exercise whereby a chunk of legacy code is provided and a requirement to port the code. I understand what a open-book test is and the requirement of it (to test your thought process etc) but (it's a long shot) what could porting involve? I have a vague idea of what porting is.

• Returning unique values of a multi-dimensional array with CodeIgniter PHP

- by Michael Bradley
Hi - I'm developing a property rentals website. The search results page will contain a list of property results. It is my intention to redefine the results, say by town, country, property type etc. So let's say for example the user searches 'France'. All of the relative properties will be returned and displayed in a list. However, I also need to reuse this array, to display only unique town names from the search results array. e.g. Montpellier, Lyon, Rennes, Nice etc. The idea is when use user click on 'Nice', only the 'Nice' properties would return. I would also like to display how many properties are in that town. The closest example as to what I want to achieve. http://www.miaandmaggie.com/dog-collars-leashes.html Any ideas how I can use my search array to display the unique towns of the search? Many thanks! • PHP preg_replace - Don't match within h1 tags

- by James
Hi there. I am using preg_replace to add a link to keywords if they are found within a long HTML string. I don't want to add a link if the keyword is found within h1 tags or strong tags. The below regex nearly works and basically says (I think): If the keyword is not immediately wrapped by either a h1 tag or a strong tag then replace with the keyword that was matched, as a bolded link to google. $result = preg_replace('%(?!
)(?!)\b(bobs widgets)\b(?!)(?!
)%i','$1', $result, -1); (the reason I don't want to match if in strong tags is because I am recursing through a lot of keywords so don't want to link an already linked keyword on subsequent passes) the above works fine and won't match:
bobs widgets
It will however match the keyword in the following text, because the h1 tag isn't immediately either side of the keyword:
Here are bobs widgets for sale
I need to make the spaces either side optional and have tried adding \s* but that doesn't get me anywhere. I'd be very grateful for a push in the right direction here.

• regex php: find everything in div

- by Fifth-Edition
I'm trying to find eveything inside a div using regexp. I'm aware that there probably is a smarter way to do this - but I've chosen regexp. so currently my regexp pattern looks like this: $gallery_pattern = '/([\s\S]*)</div/'; And it does the trick - somewhat. the problem is if i have two divs after each other - like this.
text to extract here

text to extract from here as well
I want to extract the information from both divs, but my problem, when testing, is that im not getting the text in between as a result but instead: "text to extract here text to extract from here as well" So . to sum up. It skips the first end of the div. and continues on to the next. The text inside the div can contain "<", "/" and linebreaks. just so you know! Does anyone have a simple solution to this problem? Im still a regexp novice.

• [PHP] access array element by value

- by Brandon
array( [0] name => 'joe' size => 'large' [1] name => 'bill' size => 'small' ) I think i'm being thick, but to get the attributes of an array element if I know the value of one of the keys, I'm first looping through the elements to find the right one. foreach($array as $item){ if ($item['name'] == 'joe'){ #operations on $item } } I'm aware that this is probably very poor, but I am fairly new and am looking for a way to access this element directly by value. Or do I need the key? Thanks, Brandon

• PHP: Recursively get children of parent

- by Nic Hubbard
I have a function which gets the ids of all children of a parent from my DB. So, if I looked up id 7, it might return an array with 5, 6 and 10. What I then want to do, is recursively find the children of those returned ids, and so on, to the final depth of the children. I have tried to write a function to do this, but I am getting confused about recursion. function getChildren($parent_id) { $tree = Array(); $tree_string; if (!empty($parent_id)) { // getOneLevel() returns a one-dimentional array of child ids $tree = $this->getOneLevel($parent_id); foreach ($tree as $key => $val) { $ids = $this->getChildren($val); array_push($tree, $ids); //$tree[] = $this->getChildren($val); $tree_string .= implode(',', $tree); } return $tree_string; } else { return $tree; } }//end getChildren() After the function is run, I would like it to return a one-dimentional array of all the child ids that were found.
