• Single-Purpose SSH account, exclusively for Reverse Port Forwarding

  On my Debian system, I'd like to create a user that is only allowed to do a Reverse Port Forward from their machine to my server, but I'm not sure how to create a limited user specifically for this purpose. For example, we'll call my server 'Sam' and my laptop 'Luke'. I'd like a user on Luke to be able to execute a reverse port forward ssh command to Sam, so that port 4321 on Sam is tunneled to port 4321 on Luke. For example: ssh -fnR 4321:localhost:4321 -l limitedUser Sam How can I create a user on Sam that is only allowed to execute this command?

• Why am I getting this "Connection to PulseAudio failed" error?

  I have a computer that runs Mythbuntu 11.10. It has an external USB Kenwood Digital Audio device. When I open up pavucontrol, I get this message: If I do as the message suggests and run start-pulseaudio-x11, I get this output: $ start-pulseaudio-x11 Connection failure: Connection refused pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused How do I correct this error? Update: Somewhere during the course of doing the suggested tests in the comments, a new audio device has now become visible in my sound settings. I have not attached or made any new device, so this must be the result of of some setting change. The device I use and know about is the Kenwood Audio device.   Hello experts, I'm very much a beginner when it comes to Ubuntu and I've been learning the ropes by diving in and writing a (backend-language independent) web app framework that relies on apache, some clever mod_rewrites, Ubuntu permissions, groups, and users. One thing that really annoys my inner clean-freak is that there are loads of users and groups that are created when Ubuntu is installed that are never used (Or so I think). Since I'm just running a simple web app server, I would like to know: What users/groups can I remove? • How do you backup your localhost ?

  i have method to backup my work on localhost based on week basis. i use multipe dos command and save in on a bat file. i use command such as copy and xcopy and save my localhost to another place. After my server grow larger, i think it take too much space. So tehre is a way to solve this problem ? maybe a software that can track changes on our php code or another method to preserve your code when thing go bad ? • Rhythmbox 2.99.1 crashes when playing any song on Ubuntu 13.10

  Yesterday rhythmbox was running smoothly but today it crashes only a few seconds after I hit the play button, regardless of track. I've tried disabling plugins, re-installing rhythmbox via synaptics, clearing the library and the rhythmdb.xml-file and just adding one album. Still, it crashes. If I run the rhythmbox from the command line i get the following before I have to force quit: :~$ rhythmbox Failed to create secure directory (/run/user/1000/pulse): Permission denied Killed :~$ However, if i run rhythmbox via the command line as superuser it does work. • ext4 jbd2 journaling active even on empty filesystem

  I have been having several issues with my ext4 filesystems that seem to be due to jbd2 journaling. I made a related post here and am rephrasing it with the hope that someone may be able to help. For a minimal example, I start with an empty 8gb USB stick and use gparted to create one ext4 partition. The command used by gparted when creating the ext4 file system is: mkfs.ext4 -j -O extent -L DataTraveler8gb /dev/sde1 I check the filesystem with gparted: e2fsck -f -y -v /dev/sde1 and I mount it: sudo mount /dev/sde1 /media/test The disk is empty, but the journaling is very active on this disk (/dev/sde1). The other disks are ext4 SSDs formatted similarly. A snapshot of iotop: % sudo iotop -oPa Total DISK READ: 0.00 B/s | Total DISK WRITE: 2027.21 K/s PID PRIO USER DISK READ DISK WRITE SWAPIN IO COMMAND 262 be/3 root 0.00 B 56.00 K 0.00 % 0.18 % [jbd2/sda1-8] 29069 be/3 root 0.00 B 0.00 B 0.00 % 0.16 % [jbd2/sde1-8] 891 be/3 root 0.00 B 4.00 K 0.00 % 0.03 % [jbd2/sdc1-8] What is jbd2 doing with /dev/sde1? If I follow the same steps with a larger 2Tb disk, iotop indicates this empty disk is constantly being written to by jbd2 at the rate of Mb/s as soon as I mount it. On the other disks, which have the OS and /home, I have tried to find if any files are being modified by processes to cause this behavior but couldn't find any. I also moved many of the disk intensive process to use a tmpfs. And used noatime. I have another non-SSD hard disk on this machine, /dev/sdb, that is also ext4 but was not formatted by gparted (given to me by a coworker). It does not appear in iotop. So I am assuming there an issue with gparted. Any suggestions are appreciated. Also any tips on how to modify existing partitions to fix the issue without having to start from scratch would be great. There are some posts related to jbd2 but they didn't help (eg. here).

  I am new to Perl and I work in a Linux OEL 5x server. I am trying to configure the Perl DB modules for Oracle connectivity (DBD and DBI modules). Can anyone help me out in the installation procedure? I had tried CPAN didn't really worked out. Any help would be appreciated. • Windows virtual wifi hostednetwork - set max number of clients?

  I'm building an app that has functionality that creates on the fly a new virtual wifi utilizing the Windows 7 / 2008 features. I can create it just fine, but am looking how to limit the maximum number of connections. By running a "netsh wlan show hostednetwork" command to view my settings - it shows (by default 100), but it HAS to be somewhere in the registry right? - I can't see any settings available for this either at the command line or using the api - so I have to assume it's stored in the reg. I see vwifi and hostednetwork registry keys in HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\ - Wlansvc\parameters\hostednetworksettings, etc... but can't find any reference to add a "MaxClients" value (or similar) - would like to limit it to only one connection. Has anyone seen any references to this, or know how to do it?

• Is it possible to stream input into RAR

  I'm using RARLABS RAR.exe to archive/backup my server data. I am familiar with using RAR for creating an archive and adding files from a folder, but what about streaming data directly into an archive? For example, when backing up my MySQL databases I use the mysqldump command that includes a pipe command into a text file. It would be nice to skip the file step and go directly into an archive file using something like the following syntax: mysqldump -uUserName -pPassword --all-databases > rar.exe newarchivename.rar Does anyone know if what I have described, or something similar, is even possible?

Our server is Windows 2003 SBS 6.5 SP2 There are no abnormal events in the system log. I ran the "Exchange ActiveSync with AutoDiscover" at https://www.testexchangeconnectivity.com/ I've notice an abnormality in the exchange properties, Log File Directory shows: Access denied. • How to add authentication to ssh dynamic port forwarding?

  I am using ssh as a SOCKS server by running this command on the server: ssh -f2qTnND *:1080 root@localhost There is one problem: anybody can connect to the server and use it's internet connection. Options: To use iptables to filter access to the server, but I connect to the server from various non-statically allocated IP addresses so I would have to edit very frequently those filters which can be annoying. To install a SOCKS server on the remote. Ultimately this is the last option if there is no other simpler way to do it. (I am very lazy) Launching the same command on clients machines. The problem here is that some clients don't run on Linux and it is awkward to set up the tunnel (Windows + Putty). Is there a way to add authentication to a SOCKS server made using ssh? Bonus question: How to add encryption between the client and the server (made using ssh)?

  I have a corrupt TrueCrypt volume. When I try to mount it, the password is fine but I get an error: hdiutil attach failed no mountable file systems. I just need to open it without TrueCrypt trying to mount it too, so I can use that partition in a data recovery program. Also it's just an image file volume. I have read the documentation here: http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=command-line-usage But I can't figure out which switch I need to use to only open an image and not mount it. I am using the Mac version, and I have set up an alias for the TrueCrypt shell command, so I can just type: truecrypt -t -v - ?? [][]..

• Copying files SSH vs sFTP

  I'm a bit of a unix noob, but this question seems super basic, yet I can't find an answer anywhere. Basically, to my knowledge, sFTP is just FTP over ssh. So, why can't I drag and drop files from one folder to another on the server side like I can on ssh. Why when I want to unzip a .tar in a server folder, does it first want to copy it to my machine and then back? Why can't it just unzip like it can when I'm using the command line. I know that when I use the command line it is using the resources of the remote machine, but why can't sFTP do that too? Is there a way to execute commands which I would normally do over SSH, but in a gui? I'm tried mapping to the drive to my own machine, I've tried so many sFTP clients that it's silly. Is there another class of program that I just don't know of?

• Torque and maui node status

  I am new for torque and maui. I was checking for node state to looking for which nodes are free and which nodes are in use. For torque one command is pbsnodes. Which gives status and other info related to node. When I was checking for maui then I found command diagnose -n which also shows status of the node. I was wondering between these 2 status. Both are giving different status for the same situation. When I do man pbsnodes I got the possible states for node "free", "offline", "down", "reserve", "job-exclusive", "job-sharing", "busy", "time-shared", or "state-unknown" But this type of different state I cant find for diagnose -n. How pbsnodes and diagnose -n get the status for node. Is there any database like xCAT use for torque or maui? Thx in advance for your valuable time.

• Microsoft FTP fails to connect after the client requests the list of features (FEAT)

  This is a really weird problem. The first few times I try to connect Filezilla just hangs on the line 211-Extended features supported: for a while before coming up and saying Error: Could not connect to server. The filezilla log below: Command: PASS *********** Response: 230 User logged in. Command: FEAT Response: 211-Extended features supported: Error: Could not connect to server The weird thing is if I keep trying to connect eventually it just works and connects fine. After Filezilla knows which features the server supports it stops asking for a while which enables you to connect first time until Filezilla decides it wants to double check the features list again. I'm at a loss on how to debug this. Has anyone experienced similar?

• Monit and Thin and Unfound Gems

  I've been using Monit to monitor my Thin server and everything was working until I upgraded my Rails version from 2.3.4 to 2.3.14. Now when I try and start Thin using monit it gives me an unfound gem error: Missing the Rails 2.3.14 gem. Please `gem install -v=2.3.14 rails` I thought this may be a GEM PATH issue and also tried setting the GEM_HOME and PATH variables in the start command: check process thin3001 with pidfile /home/blahblah/apps/Vocab/shared/pids/thin.3001.pid start program = "/usr/bin/env PATH=/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems GEM_HOME=/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems /usr/bin/ruby /usr/bin/thin -C /etc/thin/vocab.yml start -o 3001" stop program = "/usr/bin/ruby /usr/bin/thin -C /etc/thin/vocab.yml stop -o 3001" if totalmem > 150.0 MB for 5 cycles then restart group thin It's strange because if I run the start command in the console it works fine, it's only within monit that I get the missing Gems error.

  Hi! I have developed IIS web service to send PAP messages using Blackberry Push API over MDS. And there is an application installed on device, configured to receive push messages on appropriate port. Everything works well on MDS simulator. But it's not working well in real environment: I have installed BES Express and register several devices. I can browse MDS url with appropriate port, so url is correct. Also port enabled for reliable pushes is used in push message and in device application. not really differs, message is marked as delivered. But my app on device not really gets this message (as it works in mds simulator) Please advice me, what may be wrong?   Working with Windows 7 professional. While trying to format western digital 250GB sata laptop drive; receiving error not initialized. Went to elevated command line to diskpart to clean all; received error message write protected. Went to Disk Management & Virtual disk drive shows as disk 2 not initialized. No format options available greyed out. Went back to command line tried to see attributes disk is read only. How do I take owner ship to change the permissions & format.

• DTS to AC3 conversion for LG TV using mediatomb DLNA server

  I want to convert a MKV video file containing DTS audio to a stream with AC3 audio. I want to pass this resulting stream to mediatomb's transcoding feature. Mediatomb will transfer the stream via DLNA to a LG TV, which does not support DTS audio. I have tried the VLC command below but the TV does not recognize the stream, and playing the destination stream on PC does not produce sound. vlc -vvv -I dummy INPUT.file --sout \ '#transcode{acodec=ac3,ab=256k,channels=2,threads=4} \ :std{mux=ts,access=file,dst=DEST.file}' The following ffmpeg command give a stream that plays on the TV with sound, but the ffmpeg process gets killed (with signal 15) within 10-15 seconds, and then the TV restarts the playback from the beginning. This goes on in loops. ffmpeg -i INPUT.file -acodec ac3 -ab 384k -vcodec copy \ -vbsf h264_mp4toannexb -f mpegts -y DEST.file I want to have a working DLNA server which transcodes DTS to AC3, any help is appreciated.

• How to unlock files using handle.exe and process name?

  I tried Unlocker 1.9.1 but it doesn't work correctly for me on Windows7 (worked ok on Windows XP) and also I tried LockHunter 2.0.2.103 x64 and reported a bug but .... LockHunter actually unlocks the file from GUI but not from command line. So I want to use handle.exe by SysInternals to unlock one file "TestPro.log". I know the absolut path if it helps. I can list and all processes that locked the file by executing C:\Windows\system32>c:\edutester\progs\handle testpro.log java.exe pid: 2120 type: File 338: C:\Users\Public\TestPro \TestPro Automation Framework\Logs\TestPro.log java.exe pid: 1004 type: File 934: C:\Users\Public\TestPro \TestPro Automation Framework\Logs\TestPro.log What I need to know how to unlock the file using above info from command line automatically. • How do special folders work on Windows 7?

  Hello, I did something silly and accidentally moved my my special folders (My Documents, My Music etc.) to the Desktop. Once I noticed my mistake I quickly moved them back. But now my System acts erratically. It continuously creates new empty folders on my Desktop. And I have now two folders named "My Pictures" in my home directory. One of which is magically linked to the one in Desktop while on the command line one one is actually visible. If I delete the superfluous folders on Desktop then the explorer crashes. It is all a big mess. Of course I checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\User Shell Folders and it looks all ok there. So here the question: As anybody got any informations on how Windows 7 handles the special folders which might help be clean up the mess? I am well versed in using both the command line or the registry editor.
