• Hosted version of Yahoo! answers

  Hi all. Does anyone know of a hosted version of Yahoo! Answers (or Stackoverflow/Superuser) that I could integrate with my site? I know that there are some open-source implementations (see http://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/2267/stack-overflow-clones?page=1&tab=votes#tab-top) but I'd rather have some hosted if possible. I know there is http://stackexchange.com/ as well, but I really want some tight integration with the rest of my site. Failing that, has anyone got any experience with the open source versions? Some of them look a little, erm, unfinished... Thanks. Neil.

• Gotcha | Installing .net 4.0 and IIS 6

  Just a quick one, seems pretty weird to me. I installed .net 4.0 on an old IIS6 box, ready to deploy a asp.net mvc app targeting .net 4.0.  I thought, which to me seems logical, that I install .net 4.0, setup a new web site, new app pool, set the web site to asp.net 4.0 (other configuration also needed to run MVC on IIS6 here and here) and it would just work. Errr… No.  The page cannot be displayed!  Nothing to do with MVC. Apparently just because you have installed .net 4 and the option is available in IIS, it’s not enabled.  I’m not going to repeat anything here…take a look at this post – clear, easy steps on exactly what you need to do and how to check if this is the problem. http://johan.driessen.se/archive/2010/04/13/getting-an-asp.net-4-application-to-work-on-iis6.aspx

• How to replace nss with new version 11.10 64bit

  I need a specific version of NSS 3.12.4. I have a simple java crypto (Sun-pkcs11) test and it works with the default nss setup from Ubuntu 11. (pointing to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu where all the libnss*.so files live) But when I point specifically to the custom 3.12.4 lib folder, it doesn't work. The only way to get it to work is to set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point to the new folder. So what is the preferred way to 'swap in' a new nss module? Do I need to overwrite any matching .so files in /usr/lib and /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu? Should I use an install command? Point is, I don't think I should have to use LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

• Cannot get debconf version after delete /var/lib/dpkg

  As a new ubuntu user, I just make a mistaken. I've deleted a folder /var/lib/dpkg/ instead of /var/lib/dpkg/lock :) Now when I execute apt-get -f install then it will display error message: ... E: Cannot get debconf version. Is debconf installed? debconf: apt-extracttemplates failed: No such file or directory ... I've try this tutorial: http://people.adams.edu/~cdmiller/posts/Ubuntu-dpkg-recovery/ but still no luck. How can I fix this issue?

• Multiplayer game communication framework for mac/ios

  (Cross post from stackoverflow) I am creating a multiplayer 2D game for Mac and iOS devices. I'll be using cocso2d for graphics/game engine, however I am largely blank on what to use for multiplayer communication. Please note that I cannot use central severs e.g. SmartFox, RedDwarf, etc since I want the players to "host" games for others and be able to play it on their LAN, VPN or my own servers. Any pointers? I checked lidgren but it's for .NET only and hence not an option for me. EDIT: just in case it wasn't clear, the messaging has to be real time hence it's probably going to be over UDP

• Change libcups to repository version

  I upgraded my libcups package to 1.6 in hopes to fix something but I just buggered things up more. So I want to reinstall it to the version on the repository (1.5.3 I think). I've tried to do a reinstall using ~#: apt-get install --reinstall libcups2 but that tells me it cannot be downloaded so refuses to upgrade. I can't just do: ~#: apt-get remove libcups2 ~#: apt-get install libcups2 as that wants to remove 299 packages along with it. Totaling 668MB so I am hesitant as that will probably take 6 hours to download on my connection.

• PXE-boot for Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop version

  My aim is to Install the Ubuntu 10.04 desktop version on a remote machine using PXE-BOOT. I'm trying to apply the steps given in PXE-BOOT for Ubuntu 9.10 . (I know this is for 9.10). In "Step 8. Setting Up Boot Files", it says cp -a /media/cdrom/install/netboot/* /tftpboot/ but I wasn't able to find the netboot folder in my Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop CD-Rom. Does that folder only exist in Ubuntu Server edition? Is it possible to do this in the Desktop edition?

• GeoToolkit Demo Embedded in an Application Framework via Maven

  As a follow on to yesterday's blog entry, here's the equivalent starter application for GeoToolkit (also known as Geotk) on the NetBeans Platform, which ends up looking like this: The above is a border.shp file I found on-line, while here's a USA states shape file rendered in the application: Note that the navigation bar is also included, though that could later be migrated into the menu bar of the NetBeans Platform.  Download the Maven based NetBeans Platform application with GeoToolkit integration here: http://java.net/projects/nb-api-samples/sources/api-samples/show/versions/7.3/tutorials/geospatial/geotoolkit/MyGeospatialSystem It was quite tricky getting this sample together, parts of it, especially the installer, which creates the database, comes from the Puzzle GIS project, while the files come from on-line locations, with the JAI-related dependencies providing problems of their own.   today at startup my Tb (not precisely sure what version it was) asked if it should check compatibility of the lightning calendar addon. That is to say it displayed in a list windows the only item: lightning and said it was not compatible. Choices were "check" or "don't" check compatibility. I clicked on check and after nothing happened for several minutes on "cancel". So, now my Tb is upgraded to 15.0 and Lightning isn't there anymore. It never asked me to upgrade anyway and I urgently need my calendar now. Any suggestions warmly welcome! Holger

• IIS 7 and ASP.NET State Service Configuration

  We have 2 web servers load balanced and we wanted to get away from sticky sessions for obvious reasons. Our attempted approach is to use the ASP.NET State service on one of the boxes to store the session state for both. I realize that it's best to have a server dedicated to storing sessions but we don't have the resources for that. I've followed these instructions to no avail. The session still isn't being shared between the two servers. I'm not receiving any errors. I have the same machine key for both servers, and I've set the application ID to a unique value that matches between the two servers. Any suggestions on how I can troubleshoot this issue? Update: I turned on the session state service on my local machine and pointed both servers to the ip address on my local machine and it worked as expected. The session was shared between both servers. This leads me to believe that the problem might be that I'm not using a standalone server as my state service. Perhaps the problem is because I am using the ip address 127.0.0.1 on one server and then using a different ip address on the other server. Unfortunately when I try to use the network ip address as opposed to localhost the connection doesn't seem to work from the host server. Any insight on whether my suspicions are correct would be appreciated.
