  • Detect when application is running in a VM environment

    - by Malcolm
Looking for ideas on how to detect when our Windows application is running in one of the following VM environments. Some starter ideas for detection are in parentheses. There may be (much) better detection techniques - the starter ideas I've come up with are based on my Google research. VMWare (looking for the presence of optional VMware Tools is one way) Microsoft Virtual PC (have a device named "Virtual HD" for their IDE disks, "MS Virtual SCSI Disk Device" for their SCSI disks) Citrix Xen Sun Virtual Box Thank you, Malcolm

  • Silverlight IDE for latest version (May 2010)

    - by lexu
In 2008 Artur Carvalho asked for an Alternative IDE for Silverlight and was told to look at Visual Studio Express. Is that still the valid answer in 2010 or are there other IDEs one should consider (cost/ OS it runs on / stability)? I'm trying to get a feel for silverlight development before commiting cash. So I don't need enterprize level tools or a license to distribute .. Would MonoDevelop and Moonlight be an option?

  • Ruby Performance Profiling

    - by JustSmith
I'm developing some code that calls another function and then sends out its response. If the said function takes to long i want to record this. Are there any light weight FREE performance profiling tools for Ruby, not on rails, that can do this? I'm even open to any solution that is accurate.

I've lost the url for the guide... Google isn't helping much either. If you have the link, please could you post it.

Hi guys, I'd like to build an application that, on interval, it checks for tweets containing a particular hashtag, and creates an individual Wordpress post for each tweet that it finds. What is the best way to do this? Are there existing plugins/tools available, or should I write my own custom plugin?

  • Track Data Execution Prevention (DEP) problem.

    - by Nicolas
Hi, When running one of our software, a tester was faced with the data execution prevention dialog of Windows. We try to reproduce this situation on a developer computer for debugging purposes : with no success. Does anyone know how to find what may cause the DEP protection to kill the application? Is there any existing tools available for this? Any advices are welcome, Thanks, Nic

  • Do you have any favorite ergonomic exercise or habit?

    - by melaos
I've read somewhere that ergonomic problems accounts for 70% of injury... And i don't want to be one of those guys who think, ahh it's just a slight sore, and go on and discover that i have CTS and have to operate on my hands!!! So are the any good ergo habits that you follow religiously each day? Or some cool tools that would send any ergo issue to a cold hell and force it to stay there. So we can program hopefully until we're old and wicked.

  • Scala script to copy files

    - by kulkarni
I want to copy file a.txt to newDir/ from within a scala script. In java this would be done by creating 2 file streams for the 2 files, reading into buffer from a.txt and writing it to the FileOutputStream of the new file. Is there a better way to achieve this in scala? May be something in scala.tools.nsc.io._. I searched around but could not find much.

  • Chinese thesaurus

    - by Saubhagya
Hi, I'm working on a multilingual software where I need to show synonyms of Chinese text to the user. I couldn't find any API that could give synonyms of a given Chinese word. I tried MS-Office proofing tools but they do not support thesaurus for chinese, rather they provide grammar, translation etc. Please suggest some API or workaround to show the synonyms for chinese words.

  • Powershell Copy-Item fails silently

    - by R W
I have a powershell 2.0 script running on Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit that copies some Hyper-V .vhd files to another server as a 'backup solution'. The script gets a list of the .vhd's to copy then iterates over that list to copy them using Copy-Item. It also writes some logging info to a file as well. The files are copied to another server (Windows Server 2003 Sp2) into a directory compressed with NTFS compression. One of the files isn't copied. It's relatively big ~ 68Gb. The others are 20Gb or less. The wierd thing is that during the copy process the file appears on the destination server and the log file generated seems to indicate the file is copied due to the difference in the times of the log file entries. I see no error messages on the log file and nothing in the event log of either machine. Here's the code that does the copy. Get-ChildItem $VMSource *.vhd -Recurse | foreach-object { $time = Get-Date -format HH.mm.ss Add-Content $logFileName "$time : File Copy ($_) started" $fullname = $_.FullName Add-Content $logFileName "$time : Copying $fullname to $VMDestination" Copy-Item $fullname $VMDestination -Force -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue -ErrorVariable errors foreach($error in $errors) { if ($error.Exception -ne $null) { Add-Content $logFileName "'tERROR COPYING FILE : $($error.Exception)" } } $time = Get-Date -format HH.mm.ss Add-Content $logFileName "$time : File Copy ($_) finished" } I can only think there's some problem with copying a file that big to a compressed directory maybe? Any ideas?

  • Usage of open source libraries in high governance and risk-averse large organizations (banks, financ

    - by bart
Does anyone have any good stories of these kinds of organizations being open to using open source dependencies (and also tools). Many staff I've encountered have little or no exposure to open source/systems and open source is treated with great suspicion. Some reasons given for this are lack of support and robustness, which is ironic given the number of end-of-life unsupported vendor products that are in production. I'm also interested in any success stories where you've seen open source go into orgs like this and have a real benefit!

  • Software Diagnostics Tool recommendations for Debugging a Windows 8 freeze

    - by Stuart
I've had my HP Pavillion dv6 laptop since last November - and it has had 8GB RAM and a 256GB Crucial M4 SSD installed since the start. I use it for software development and it's had a Windows 8 RTM installation since early September. Yesterday I had to give a presentation at a customer site - so used Powerpoint for the first time since installing Win8... since that point my machine has 'frozen' every 2 hours or so after startup. There doesn't seem to be any easy to see reason behind the freeze - the system just freezes, even if I have left it idle with just a desktop there. My immediate suspicion is that the SSD is the mostly likely cause of the problem. I've looked at some of the questions on here - e.g. How do I troubleshoot hardware issues related to a computer freeze/crash? - but don't really want to start taking my laptop apart. Another suspicion is that this might be related to the WiFi adapter (Broadcom 802.11n) since I have noticed that this doesn't seem to play perfectly with things like Hyper-V in Win8. Can anyone recommend any software diagnostic tools that I can run in order to evaluate the health of the SSD or of other parts of the system? Thanks Stuart P.S. I doubt Powerpoint is the cause of this, but I may use it as an excuse never to use it again... More realistically perhaps something got damaged during travel to the customer site?

  • Build an Xcode project on a Linux machine

    - by d11wtq
Without writing a GNUmakefile by hand, do any tools exist that understand Xcode projects and can build then directly against GNUstep, thus simplifying (slightly) the work required to keep projects functional under Cocoa/Mac and GNUstep/Linux? Basically, is there an xcodebuild style app for Linux? I looked at pbtomake a few weeks ago but it seems to be a dead project.
