• Should I just always Convert.ToInt32 my integers to account for potential nullable integers?

  If my MSSQL database contains a data type that is NULL (i.e. null is allowed) then ORMs, such as EntityFramework in my case, create .NET objects that are nullable. This is great, and the way I use nullables is like this: C# int? someInt = 5; int newInt = someInt.Value; // woot VB.NET Dim someInt As Integer? Dim newInt As Integer = someInt.Value ' hooray However, recently I had to make a change to the database to make an Id field no longer NULL (nullable). This means that .Value is now broken. This is a nuisance if the Id property is used a lot. One solution that I thought of is to just use Convert.ToInt32 on Id fields so it doesn't matter if an int is nullable or not. C# int newInt = Convert.ToInt32(someInt); // always compiles VB.NET Dim newInt As Integer = Convert.ToInt32(someInt) ' always compiles Is this a bad approach and are there any alternatives?

• Should functions of a C library always expect a string's length?

  I'm currently working on a library written in C. Many functions of this library expect a string as char* or const char* in their arguments. I started out with those functions always expecting the string's length as a size_t so that null-termination wasn't required. However, when writing tests, this resulted in frequent use of strlen(), like so: const char* string = "Ugh, strlen is tedious"; libFunction(string, strlen(string)); Trusting the user to pass properly terminated strings would lead to less safe, but more concise and (in my opinion) readable code: libFunction("I hope there's a null-terminator there!"); So, what's the sensible practice here? Make the API more complicated to use, but force the user to think of their input, or document the requirement for a null-terminated string and trust the caller?

• Changing in pavucontrols tab "Recording" via command line

  I'm using pavucontrol to make changes in the "Recording". I'm changing the source (??) of a Loopback to Null-Output from "Internes Audio Analog Stereo" to "Monitor of Internes Audio Analog Stereo" see the screenshot http://picpaste.de/Bildschirmfoto_vom_2013-10-26_11_32_03-z0KwnFDE.png I'm now looking for a possibility to do this via command line. So far I've done the following: pactl load-module module-null-sink ? creates a new sink pactl load-module module-loopback ? creates a new sink input pactl load-module module-loopback ? creates another sink input pacmd move-sink-input 0 1 ? changes the sink of the sink-input (to Null-Output); this is like changing manually in the pacucontrol tab "Playback". It's just the last part (making the change like shown in the screenshot) via command line that I'm not able to do. I'd be very happy for any advice or suggestions. Thanks already!

  I am trying to install PrestaShop 1.4.0.17, and reach Step 3. I enter database information, which tests okay, and I choose the second option: Full mode: includes 100+ additional modules and demo products (FREE too!). I choose Next, and receive the error: Error while inserting data in the database: ‘CREATE TABLE `shop_county_zip_code` ( `id_county` INT NOT NULL , `from_zip_code` INT NOT NULL , `to_zip_code` INT NOT NULL , PRIMARY KEY ( `id_county` , `from_zip_code` , `to_zip_code` ) ) ENGINE=’ You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near \’\’ at line 6(Error: : 1064) This happens if I use either MyISAM, or InnoDB. Why is this happening? This also happens if I drop all database tables, and try again in simple mode. Is there a manual installation method?

• Many to Many delete in NHibernate two parents with common association

  I have 3 top level entities in my app: Circuit, Issue, Document Circuits can contain Documents and Issues can contain Documents. When I delete a Circuit, I want it to delete the documents associated with it, unless it is used by something else. I would like this same behavior with Issues. I have it working when the only association is in the same table in the db, but if it is in another table, then it fails due to foreign key constraints. ex 1(This will cascade properly, because there is only a foreign constraint from Circuit to Document) Document1 exists. Circuit1 exists and contains a reference to Document1. If I delete Circuit1 then it deletes Document1 with it. ex 2(This will cascade properly, because there is only a foreign constraint from Circuit to Document.) Document1 exists. Circuit1 exists and contains a reference to Document1. Circuit2 exists and contains a reference to Document1. If I delete Circuit1 then it is deleted, but Document1 is not deleted because Circuit2 exists. If I then delete Circuit2, then Document1 is deleted. ex 3(This will throw an error, because when it deletes the Circuit it sees that there are no other circuits that reference the document so it tries to delete the document. However it should not, because there is an Issue that has a foreign constraint to the document.) Document 1 exists. Circuit1 exists and contains a reference to Document1. Issue1 exists and contains a reference to Document1. If I delete Circuit1, then it fails, because it tries to delete Document1, but Issues1 still has a reference.   On my website I want the user to have the ability to login/logout from any page. When the user select login button a modal dialog will be present to the user for him to enter in his credentials. Since login will be on every page, I thought I would create a partial view for the login and add it to the layout page. But when I did this I got the following error: Exception Details: System.InvalidOperationException: Duration must be a positive number. There are other ways to work around this that would not using partial views, but I believe this should work. So to test this, I decided to make everything simple with the following code: Created a layout page with the following code @{Html.RenderAction("_Login", "Account");} In the AccountController: public ActionResult _Login() { return PartialView("_Login"); } Partial View _Login <a id="signin">Login</a> But when I run this simple version this I still get this error: Exception Details: System.InvalidOperationException: Duration must be a positive number.   Hi, I'm trying to pick up Svn.NET (http://www.pumacode.org/projects/svndotnet/) library for use in my Mono project. I tried compiling its mockapp - svnmockapp project (http://www.pumacode.org/projects/svndotnet/browser/trunk/SvnMockApp) , I am able to get the references right and get it compiled right. I understand that it references 2 other modules libapr (libapr-1.so.0) and svn_client (libsvn_client-1.so.0) , by which I've created PumaCode.SvnDotNet.dll.config in /bin/Debug . That is all I've done to tried to try to get the mockapp at least outputting something to show that it is indeed interfacing SVN. Nevertheless, it is not working. Here is my question: I'm trying to deploy an EJB in WebLogic 10.3.2. The purpose is to use a specific WorkManager to execute work produced in the scope of this component. With this in mind, I've set up a WorkManager (named ResponseTimeReqClass-0) on my WebLogic configuration, using the web-based interface (Environment Work Managers New). • Generic Http Module

  The problem I am trying to make a generic http module in asp.net C# for handling roles defined by an enum which i want to be able to change by a generic parameter. This will make it possible to use the generic module with any kind of enum defined for each project. The module hooks into the Authenticate event of the FormsAuthenticationModule, and is called on each request to the website. The module exposes public events which could be defined in the global.asax. But i cant seem to figure out how to make the generic http module work like a non generic module. There is 3 main problems. I cant register the generic http module in the web.config like any other module as i cant specify the generic parameter, or is possible somehow ? The way to solve that as far as i can figure out is to create a non-generic http module that intializes the generic HttpModule (the generic parameter is defined in a custom section for the module in the web.config). But that introduces the next problem. I cant find out how to make the public events exposed by the generic module available to hook into through the global.asax as you would normally do with a non-generic module by just making a public method with the name like ModuleClassName_PublicEventName. The init() method on the http module gets an reference to the HttpApplication object created in the global.asax. I dont know if it somehow could be possible with reflection to search for the methods and if they are defined in the global.asax (HttpApplication super class) hook them up with the correct event handler ? or if any methods on the HttpApplication object can be used? How would i store and later get a reference to the generic module created in the non-generic module ? I can get the non-generic module with HttpContext.Current.ApplicationInstance.Modules.Get("TheModule"); but is there any way i can store a reference to the generic module in the non-generic module (cant figure out how it should be possible), or store it somewhere else so i can always get it? If I can get a reference to the generic module from the global.asax etc. the events mentioned in nr. 2 can be manually wired to the methods. Thoughts and other possible solutions Instead of registering the module in the web.config it can be manually initialized by overridding the Init method of the HttpApplication and calling the Init method on the module. But that will introduce some new problems. The module will no longer be added to the the ModulesCollection. So I will need to store a reference somewhere else. This could be done with a property in the global.asax, and by implementing an interface, or by creating an generic abstract base type inheriting from HttpApplication, that the global.asax could inherit from. In the generic abstract base type i could also override the init method. It will still not automatically hook up methods in the global.asax with events in the generic module. If it is possible with reflection to search for defined methods in the super type of the HttpApplication it could be automatically done that way. But i can wire the methods in the global.asax with the events in the generic module manually either in the Init method or anywhere else by getting reference to the generic module. It doesnst really need to implement the IHttpModule interface if i choose to manually initalize the generic module. I could just aswell move all the code to the abstract base type inheriting from the HttpApplication. I would prefer to register the module simply by defining it in the web.config as it will be the easiest and most natural / logical solution. Also it would be great if it could be kept as a HttpModule instead of having to define a an abstract base type inheriting from HttpApplication, else it will be more thighed up and not as loose and plugable as i wanted it to be (but maybe it is not possible). Another alternative would be to make it all static. As far as i can figure out i would have to somehow make sure that only one method can be added to the public static events, so it wont add a reference each time a new instance of the global.asax is created. I simply cant find out what is the best solution. I have been messing around with this and thinking about it for days now. Maybe there is an option that i havent thought of ? Hope anyone out there can help me.

I installed IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 R2 and added these two application to my default website. I am having a number of problems so im hoping one of you can help out... 1) The silverlight and WCF service applications do not work with pass-through authentication. I need to "connect as" the administrator server account when setting up the application. I read online that you should only need to use the "connect as" field when you are connecting to another computer. If i dont supply the admin credentials i get this error. • The remote server returned an error: (400) Bad Request - uploading less 2MB file size?

  The file succeed to upload when it is 2KB or lower in size. The main reason why I use streaming is to be able to upload file up to at least 1 GB. But when I try to upload file with less 1MB size, I get bad request. It is my first time to deal with downloading and uploading process, so I can't easily find the cause of error. • Loosely coupled .NET Cache Provider using Dependency Injection

  I have recently been reading the excellent book “Dependency Injection in .NET”, written by Mark Seemann. I do not generally buy software development related books, as I never seem to have the time to read them, but I have found the time to read Mark’s book, and it was time well spent I think. Reading the ideas around Dependency Injection made me realise that the Cache Provider code I wrote about earlier (see http://geekswithblogs.net/Rhames/archive/2011/01/10/using-the-asp.net-cache-to-cache-data-in-a-model.aspx) could be refactored to use Dependency Injection, which should produce cleaner code. The goals are to: Separate the cache provider implementation (using the ASP.NET data cache) from the consumers (loose coupling). This will also mean that the dependency on System.Web for the cache provider does not ripple down into the layers where it is being consumed (such as the domain layer). Provide a decorator pattern to allow a consumer of the cache provider to be implemented separately from the base consumer (i.e. if we have a base repository, we can decorate this with a caching version). Although I used the term repository, in reality the cache consumer could be just about anything. Use constructor injection to provide the Dependency Injection, with a suitable DI container (I use Castle Windsor). The key thing is that the domain or data access layers do not need system.web references adding to them. Consuming a Repository I have an existing couple of repository interfaces defined in my domain layer: IRepository.cs 1: using System; 2: using System.Collections.Generic; 3:   4: using CacheDiSample.Domain.Model; 5:   6: namespace CacheDiSample.Domain.Repositories 7: { 8: public interface IRepository<T> 9: where T : EntityBase 10: { 11: T GetById(int id); 12: IList<T> GetAll(); 13: } 14: }   IBlogRepository.cs 1: using System; 2: using CacheDiSample.Domain.Model; 3:   4: namespace CacheDiSample.Domain.Repositories 5: { 6: public interface IBlogRepository : IRepository<Blog> 7: { 8: Blog GetByName(string name); 9: } 10: }   These two repositories are implemented in the DataAccess layer, using Entity Framework to retrieve data (this is not important though). One important point is that in the BaseRepository implementation of IRepository, the methods are virtual. This will allow the decorator to override them. It also means that my controllers do not have any knowledge of the caching taking place, as the DI container will simply inject the decorator instead of the root implementation of the repository. The first step is to implement a BlogRepository decorator, with the caching logic in it. Note that this can reside in the domain layer, as it does not require any knowledge of the data access methods. This will make the cache provider functionality available to the repository. I inject the parent IBlogRepository implementation (which has the actual data access code), via the constructor. This will allow the methods implemented in the parent to be called if nothing is found in the cache. I override each of the methods implemented in the repository, including those implemented in the generic BaseRepository. Each override of these methods follows the same pattern. It makes a call to the CacheProvider.Fetch method, and passes in the parentBlogRepository implementation of the method as the retrieval method, to be used if nothing is present in the cache. Configuring the Caching Repository in the DI Container The final piece of the jigsaw is to tell Castle Windsor to use the BlogRepositoryWithCaching implementation of IBlogRepository, but to inject the actual Data Access implementation into this decorator. Now if the consumer of the repository makes a call to the repositories method, it will be routed via the caching mechanism. You can test this by stepping through the code, and seeing that the DataAccess.BlogRepository code is only called if there is no data in the cache, or this has expired. The next step is to add the SQL Cache Dependency support into this pattern, this will be a future post.

• .NET Framework 4 updates breaking MMC.exe and other CLR.dll Exceptions

  I've seen this issue floating around the net the last few weeks and I'm facing exactly the same issue. My servers are set to auto install updates using Windows update (not clever, I know), and since about 2 months ago, I've been getting strange Exceptions. The first thing that happens is that MMC.exe just crashes randomly and sometimes on startup of the console. The exception in the Windows Application log is as follow: Faulting application name: mmc.exe, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp: 0x4a5bc808 Faulting module name: mscorwks.dll, version: 2.0.50727.5448, time stamp: 0x4e153960 Secondly, on the same server, I have some custom Windows services which constantly crash with exceptions : Faulting application name: Myservice.exe, version: 1.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4f44cb11 Faulting module name: clr.dll, version: 4.0.30319.239, time stamp: 0x4e181a6d Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x000378aa The exception is not in my code. I've tested and retested it. My server has the following .NET Framework updates installed: Does anyone have any idea?
