• Ubuntu 12.04 I'm trying to ugrade my Geforce 8400 to Geforce GTX 560, getting a black screen

  I have an NVidia Geforce 8400 which is working fine in Ubuntu 12.04. I have just purchased an NVidia GeForce GTX 560 and have been trying to install it. No matter what I do all I get is a black screen on boot up. I have tried; 1/ Additional Drivers, driver version 295.40, this works for the GeForce 8400 but gives me a black screen with the GTX 560 when I boot. 2/ Downloaded driver version 295.40 from NVidias site, was able to install it successfully, it works with my 8400 but gives me a black screen with the GTX 560 when I boot. Are there any options I can try?

• Why does Ubuntu 10.10 show blank screen during startup?

  When I try to login to Ubuntu 10.10 I get a flickering screen for a second showing - Ubuntu 10.10 ............. and then I get a blank purple coloured screen[Ubuntu's theme colour] which doesn't progress any further Can anybody suggest a remedy to this problem? From whatever questions I searched in various Ubuntu Forums it seems like this problem is likely caused by a missing NVIDIA Display Driver[which is being used in my Sony Vaio Laptop] update in Ubuntu releases If that's the case then how can I update my NVIDIA Display Driver for Ubuntu 10.10 without being able to log into the Ubuntu 10.10?

• gt 555m instead of gt540m

  Im gonna be really short. My Acer Aspire 5755G lap top has a Nvidia geforce gt 540m. • Low display resolution under Ubuntu 12.04

  I had some problem after installing new drivers for Nvidia. After having followed the instructions answered to this question, I now only have the Nouveau open-source driver. I can have access to my desktop, but I'm stuck with a 640x480 (4:3) resolution. No other resolution is proposed in the dropdown list of the "Displays" utility. I tried installing the two Nvidia drivers suggested in the "Additional Drivers" utility, but each one broke my display again. Now that I have reverted back to Nouveau again, what should I do to get a higher resolution ?

• W520 External monitor setup with Ubuntu 12.10

  I just installed a fresh Ubuntu 12.10 64-Bit Desktop on my Lenovo W520. It looks like there are a lot of challenges around making it work with out of the box Nouveau drivers or propriety Nvidia drivers or Intel GPU. I looked at couple of notes on how to make it work with Bumblebee with Optimus Nvidia. None of them seems to work for 12.10. Anybody has a solid answer on this? It seems like a lot of people are suffering from this. Here is my xrandr output. Let me know if you need any additional information. • EVGA GTX650Ti Boost / Ubuntu 12.04 / 2 X-Star WQHD

  I bought 2 X-Star WQHD monitors which, predictably, did not work with my on board video card. Yesterday I installed the EVGA card and have been trying to get the NVIDIA drivers to work. I tried to install the 304 .run, I tried to remove that and then install the nvidia-current, then I tried to activate the proprietary driver from within Ubuntu...for the first couple of attempts, I was able to see 800x600 or something close on the X-Star displays but now all I see is flashing colors on those. On my older Samsung monitor (S22B300B 21.5") is still displaying through the EVGA card. Any thoughts on how to go about fixing this?

  I am having a problem after the last update, the booting to command line problem I even can't start in the graphic fail system "xfail": X: cannot stat /etc/X11/X (no such file or directory), aborting I found some one mentioning a solution which is installing ubuntu-dektop though apt-get but it failed due to this error: Unmet dependencies " the dependencies are xserver-xorg-video-all and xserver-xorg-input" Tried to install these first also another dependencies problem. Solutions I tried: removing and installing nvidia driver removing and installing xserver Tried different versions of nvidia including the latest one which is the one I had before the update Any ideas?

• How to disable VGA

  If i run lspci | grep VGA I get below output which tells me below VGA cards are present on my computer. 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT 220] (rev a2) 08:02.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc ES1000 (rev 02) The ES1000 is an onboard card which came with my machine. Do anyone know how to disable this VGA on my machine. • Dual display setup - only one displayed after logon

  During boot process my desktop shows both Monitors, but after log I only get one. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 When I go into Displays its still only shows on Monitor.   I am trying to use Nvidia Optimus on my laptop by using Bumblebee, I have an Intel Core i5 with an Nvidia Geforce GT 630M. I have followed the instructions on the wiki page at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee, but when trying to run optirun with Firefox (or any other program, like glxspheres), I get the following error: [ 1921.452820] [ERROR]Cannot access secondary GPU - error: Could not load GPU driver [ 1921.452905] [ERROR]Aborting because fallback start is disabled. • 12.04 + Alienware M11x R2 + Bumblebee 3.0 = low resolution only

  I had a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 on my Alienware M11x, and it worked with the native monitor resolution of 1366x768. In trying to get the Optimus chipset working, I installed Bumblebee 3.0. Now, I am only offered 640x480 for my monitor resolution. Graphically, Unity 3D appears to be working now, instead of the Unity 2D I had before, so something went right, but I don't know how I can get it to offer me any higher resolutions than 640x480. I've looked up many pages that address this topic, but nothing that I've seen suggested has worked. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install bumblebee-nvidia was the latest thing I tried. I've tried some variants of this, I've been sure to uninstall nvidia drivers prior to reinstalling Bumblebee and various video drivers. Does anyone have any clue as to how I can get back to native resolution?

• Bumblebee screwd up my grafics-settings

  I had my system working pretty good with the external monitor working with the displayport. Unfortunately I felt that I should try to install Bumblebee. It didn't work. The monitor wasn't recognised. So I uninstalled it with the instructions on ubuntus wiki. But it didn't get back to the way it was. And when I copied the Purge-command it started deleting other stuff to, like Cheese and whatnot. I can't get the external monitor to be recognised. If I activate Optimus I get the right settings on my laptopscreen, but no Nvidia-drivers. If I deactivate optimus I get poor resolution on my laptopscreen, and still don't recognise the external monitor. But the Nvidia-drivers show up and can be activated. Why oh why did I have to try to install Bumblebee.

• Run 3 monitors on two different video cards?

  Can I run 3 monitors on two different video cards? I have an ATI and Nvidia brand card. The ATI has 2 HDMI connections. They both work. Both cards are also picked up in Windows, one being the ATI and the other one as the Nvidia, but it says VGA Controller, although the card only takes 2 DVi. So, one DVI cable goes into that Nvidia card. 3 Monitors, but only 2 the HDMI ones from the ATI pick up, not the third one which is connected to the Nvidia via DVI. How can I run three monitors then? I suppose I can't install both drivers, so I'm unsure what to do. Is this possible? I just want the Nvidia card to power the third screen, no gaming on it, nothing. Also the ATI is picked up as primary card as well, so no hurdle there. EDIT: Hm, just installed the Nvidia drivers and it picked up the third screen no problem. Hope there aren't any major conflicts. Will post this as an answer as correct when I'm able. Can't as a new user.

• I lost /dev/md2 on my server

  Hi, My 2 hard drives fried at the same moment apparently. My host company rebooted my server in rescue mode and I am trying to recover my data. They told me to mount /dev/sda2 to recover the data I need but, looking at a similar server that I have in pool, the data I'm looking for should be instead in /dev/md2. I can find /dev/md0 but not /dev/md2 (nor /dev/md1). I've looked on several places on the web and I could only find messages explaining how to create new partition. I just need to recover some data, not all of it and I'll be glad if anyone could help me to mount the /dev/md2 folder (or any other trick that would allow me to recover the data that was stored there). • Dell M4600 with nVidia Quadro 2000M hangs on boot when external monitor is connected

  I have a problem with my fresh installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my Dell M4600: nVidia quadro 2000M i7-2860 16GB ram 128GB SSD Dell/Samsung 750GB HDD IPS RGB laptop display When it is connected via DP++ to the external Dell U2311H monitor, it hangs on boot or when wakening from suspend. If I detach the DP cable it boots normally. I have tried all combinations that I have found, as adding to grub: "no splash", "boot=pci", "acpi=off", etc... I have also changed in nVidia X settings that external monitor is the primary one and also tried to delete monitor.xml file. There is no change it hangs each time after grub. It starts to load daemons then both screens are blank and then completely hangs with beep sound. What I discovered is if I detach the cable and wait for about 2 sec after grub starts booting and then physically connect DP cable while the Ubuntu is still booting everything works normally and I have a picture on my external screen while the laptop screen is off, just as I wanted. Do you maybe know how to solve this issue? Thank You.

I have also checked this link format read-only USB drive but this one doesn't have a solution. Also am attempting to do this on Ubuntu 12.04.

• How to recover unavailable memory in /dev/shm

  Good day to all, I have a question regarding the use of /dev/shm. I use it as a temporary folder for large files to speed up processing and save IO off the HD. My problem is that some of my scripts sometimes require "forceful" interruption for a variety of reasons. I can then manually remove the files left over in /dev/shm but the memory is not returned to available space (as seen by df -h). Is there any way to recover the memory without restarting the system? I'm using LTS12.04 and most of the scripts are PERL running system call on C programs (bioinformatics tools). Thanks.
