• I set a global bug catcher in my application for unhandled exceptions and it is picking up all exceptions

  I am trying to figure out why this is happing. In my vb.net application I set a global handler in the ApplicationEvents.vb which I thought would only pick up any unhandled exceptions, although it is picking up every exception that happens in my application whether or not they are handled with try catch blocks. • Using Silverlight with Existing Application

  This seems like a very basic question but I couldn't find any help on web. If you could provide some link or steps to do this. I have created few basic Silverlight applications which are working fine standalone. I also have a basic ASP.NET application with a solution with around 10 Class Library Projects and 1 website. I want to create a small popup which will have some funtionality using Silverlight. How should I go about creating this application and how to integrate it with my existing application for it to show as a link. I would not want that link to open another application/site. Thanks.

• Changing populated DataTable column data types

  Hi, I have a System.Data.DataTable which is populated by reading a CSV file which sets the datatype of each column to string. I want to append the contents of the DataTable to an existing database table - currently this is done using SqlBulkCopy with the DataTable as the source. However, the column data types of the DataTable need to be changed to match the schema of the target database table, handling null values. I am not very familiar with ADO.NET so have been search for a clean way of doing this? Thanks.

• How many SQL queries per HTTP request is optimal?

  I know the answer to this question for the most part is "It Depends", however I wanted to see if anyone had some pointers. We execute queries each request in ASP.NET MVC. Each request we need to get user rights information, and Various data for the Views that we are displaying. How many is too much, I know I should be conscious to the number of queries i am executing. I would assume if they are small queries and optimized out, half-a-dozen should be okay? Am I right? What do you think?

  I'm just looking in to the new .NET 4.0 features. With that, I'm attempting a simple calculation using Parallel.For and a normal for(x;x;x) loop. However, I'm getting different results about 50% of the time. long sum = 0; Parallel.For(1, 10000, y => { sum += y; } ); Console.WriteLine(sum.ToString()); sum = 0; for (int y = 1; y < 10000; y++) { sum += y; } Console.WriteLine(sum.ToString()); My guess is that the threads are trying to update "sum" at the same time. Is there an obvious way around it?

• Optimize apache for 10K+ wordpress views a day on 2GB RAM E6500 CPU

  I have a dedicated server with apache/php on ubuntu serving my Wordpress blog with about 10K+ pageviews a day. I have W3TC plug in installed with APC. But every now and then server stop responding or goes dead slow and i have to restart apache to get it back. Heres my config what am i doing wrong? • Proper end of day sequence to maintain monitor config

  I've got an HP EliteBook 6930p that travels from home, where it is connected to individual cables, and work where there is a docking station. At both locations I have an external monitor as the secondary monitor and like to have the laptop screen as the primary, i.e. with the task bar. At the end of the day I close the laptop, which is supposed to set it to standby. When I get home I plug in the power cord and the external monitor cord and open the computer. When heading into work I close the computer and unplug everything. Inevitably when I open the computer at the new location the monitors are reversed, i.e. the primary, task bar display is on the external monitor and the laptop shows the secondary, even though when i click identify the laptop has the 1. I then have to disable the secondary display, switch the primary to the laptop and re-enable the secondary. I've tried locking the computer before closing and occasionally that works to keep the setup in place but not always. Any suggestions for how to keep the config in place during transport? ed

• Site Goes Offline Every Day At Midnight - No One Knows Why

  0 down vote favorite Seems today a website I manage has been going online and offline between 12a and 12:25a. I have no idea what is causing the issue so I am seeking guidance on where to start. It is a Wordpress based site. So here is what I DO know: I have a pingdom account which alerts me when the site goes offline so we can see every day, like clockwork, the site goes on/off. At the time of the ups/downs I see a lot of strain on the memory usage. Look at the load average when the site is going online/offline (http://screencast.com/t/BRlfXkqrbJII). Then I ran this command to restart http (http://screencast.com/t/usVtYWZ2Qi) and the memory usage then goes down to this (http://screencast.com/t/VdTIy3bgZiQB). An hour after I restarted http, the site then went offline/online so restarting the http didn't do much help. When the site is going offline/online, I ran the top command and get this (http://screencast.com/t/zEwr7YQj3). Here is a top command when the site is at it's lowest (http://screencast.com/t/eaMfha9lbT - so this would be dubbged "normal"). Here is a bandwidth report (http://screencast.com/t/AS0h2CH1Gypq). The traffic doesn't seem to be that much (http://screencast.com/t/s7hrWNNic1K), but looking at my times the site is going up/down this may be one of the reasons? I have the dvp Nitro package at Media Temple (http://mediatemple.net/webhosting/nitro/). So at this point I would request some help in trying to figure out what the cause of this is, and how I can go about pinpointing this issue. ANY HELP is greatly appreciated.

• iPhone all day meeting request bug?

  We've come across a bit of a weird bug in the office. our office is closing for a week or so over christmas, and our admin staff sent a meeting request to everyone in the office to go from 5pm on the 23rd of December until we return to work at 8.30 on the 5th. However there was some confusion, as if you look at the image below, the same meeting request is showing up with different start times for some people. While most people get the 5pm date, for others it shows up as an all day event! Staff have been planning their activities for the 23rd only to find out that their calendar is wrong and they are required to work. With some investigation, we noticed that all of the people with the incorrect time own iPhones or iPads. So perhaps they accepted the meeting on their phones, and it has put the meeting in wrong? There are people with the correct one that have iPhones, but perhaps they are on ios4 still, or perhaps they didn't accept the meeting request on their phone. has anyone else come across this error at all? is there a fix?

• Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API

  The past couple of projects I've been working on have included the use of the Google Maps API and geocoding service in websites for various reasons. I decided to tie together some of the lessons learned, build an ASP.NETstore locator demo, and write about it on 4Guys. Last week I published the first article in what I think will be a three-part series: Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps (Part 1). Part 1 walks through creating a demo where a user can type in an address and any stores within a (roughly) 15 mile area will be displayed in a grid.The article begins with a look at the database used to power the store locator (namely, a single table that contains one row for every location, with each location storing its store number, address, and, most important, latitude and longitude coordinates) and then turns to usingGoogle's geocoding service to translatea user-entered address into latitude and longitude coordinates. The latitude and longitude coordinates are used to find nearby stores, which are then displayed in a grid. Part 2 looks at enhancing the search results to include a map with markers indicating the position of each nearby store location. The Google Maps API, along with a bit of client-side script and server-side logic, make this actually pretty straightforward and easy to implement. Here's a screen shot of the improved store locator results. Part 3, which I plan on publishing next week, looks at how to enhance the map by using information windows to display address information when clicking a marker. Additionally, I'll show how to use custom icons for the markers so that instead of having the same marker for each nearby location the markers will be images numbered 1, 2, 3, and so on, which will correspond to a number assigned to each search result in the grid. The idea here is that by numbering the search results in the grid and the markers on the map visitors will quickly be able to see what marker corresponds to what search result. • How does an ASP.NET programmer go from working on/developing existing sites, to creating one from sc

  I've been an ASP.NET developer for some time, always working on existing ASP.NET pages, modifying functionality, adding features, tweaking things etc. but have never built a site up from scratch. I've read books on ASP.NET, and they generally talk you through the various features of ASP.NET with a mock up site, but it's always very basic and they jump straight in. The time has come however, to write a site from scratch for a client. I've never done this before. There are design considerations, but like a lot of ASP.NET sites, the basic idea is, you have a site, where users can log in, and save some information like their name and password and address. The site has some functionality, but that's the basic design of a majority of (business-related) asp.net websites I would wager. I know how to program in ASP.NET already on an existing site, but I don't know how to design my own properly that meets the criteria above. I guess the main worry is security. I don't know the best way to handle a simple log-in system that stores user information like their name and password. I understand there are a few approaches to this, but the catch with this project is that it has to be absolutely bulletproof. Maximum security. All those good practices for security, it needs to have them all. I'm not asking what they are, but I am asking where to begin. What should be the first steps after I do File New Project ? Where can I look for information about setting up a secure ASP.NET website? I'll figure out the content and page layout later, it's the framework that is the big thing. Any and all advice would be welcome. I really want to get my first from-scratch project right from the beginning. Just to confuse things, it's possible I will be using MVC, I am not sure if this has any impact.
