  Tomorrow (Friday 23/4/2010) I am delivering a session at the Cloud Grid Exchange in London at SkillsMatter (A top training company and superb supporter of development communities). To be perfectly honest – I’m more interested in attending than presenting as the sessions and speaker line up look great. But in the middle of all that I will be doing the following (rather cheekily named) session: Looking at the Clouds through dirty Windows Many developers assume that the Microsoft Windows Azure Platform for Cloud Computing is only relevant if you develop solutions using Microsoft Visual Studio and the .NET Framework. The reality is somewhat different. In the same way that developers can build great applications on Windows Server using a variety of programming languages, developers can do the same for Azure. Java, Tomcat, PHP, Ruby, Python, MySQL and more all work great on Azure. In this session we will take a lap around the services offered by the Azure PaaS and demonstrate just how easy it is to build and deploy applications built in .NET and other technologies. The session will be a mix of slides and demos – currently I plan to demo .NET and Ruby on Rails running on Azure – but I may flex that depending on how the morning sessions go and who turns up.   There are so many lightboxes to choose from, I'm looking for a very lightweight one to use in an embedded javascript widget that would be used on a number of different web sites. This would work in a similar way to the GetSatisfaction/UserVoice feedback tab. Here are the requirements for the lightbox: Very small javascript download (animation not needed) Self contained, not dependent on any libraries such as jquery, etc. Works in major browsers Lightbox displays HTML content from a given URL Close button (like GetSatisfaction or UserVoice) Dims background Avoids javascript namespace conflicts (or can easily be made to avoid them) CSS styling of lightbox does not interfere with site styling Have you used an existing lightbox scripts for this same purpose with similar requirements? • Jquery Tools Tabs: How to capture onClick event when selection is on current tab?

  Hi All, I tried to ask this question on the jquery tools forum, but didn't get a response, hopefully someone here can help. Question: It seems the onClick event does not get fired when user is already on current tab, I think that make sense for most cases. However, in my case, I do want to capture the onClick event even when the curent tab is already the selection. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!

• Adding git branch to bash prompt on snow leopard

  I am using this: $(__git_ps1 '(%s)') It works however it does not update when I change directories or checkout a new branch. I also have this alias: alias reload='. ~/.bash_profile' Sample run: user@machine:~/dev/rails$cd git_folder/ user@machine:~/dev/rails/git_folder$reload user@machine:~/dev/rails/git_folder(test)$git checkout master Switched to branch 'master' user@machine:~/dev/rails/git_folder(test)$reload user@machine:~/dev/rails/git_folder(master)$ As you can see it is being set correctly but only if I reload bash_profile. I have wasted way to much time on this. I am using bash on snow leopard. Please help!

  I have been using Java from the last 2yrs (academics). Now, when I am graduating, I received a job offer from a .com. The job is awesome and it's a backend Java work. I wanted to get involved with Ruby on Rails, looked for alot of jobs, gave few interviews, but didn't make it. So, what should I do now? Should I go ahead with Java and learn/do more with Java, a complete 360degree of the java world - Full stack of Java from backend to frontend? OR Java at workplace and try to improve my Ruby on Rails. I understand, this is a very subjective question and depends on the individual, but what would you have done? Have you ever faced a similar problem? I feel I have wasted some time with Rails, where I could not "conquer" Rails, where as I could have used that time to go more into Java.

  Hello, So, when I decided to remove the tags <script></script> and benefit from the asset-pipeline instead, complications took place. I am working with Google Maps' API V3, and to benefit from their functions and objects that their code provides, you have load the link first <script src="https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?v=3.exp&libraries=places"></script> Basically, If I put this line before their code, and put their code in script tags, things work out pretty perfecty, but when I use javascript_include_tag instead of script tag in html and copy my code to the file I pointed at -Like This - <script src="https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?v=3.exp&libraries=places"></script> <%=javascript_include_tag "map_new_marker_drag"%> , the asset-pipeline seems to load That file before loading the link of Google Maps API, thus I get the error : - Uncaught ReferenceError : google is undefined I tried putting the link in javascript_include_tag too -Like this- <%=javascript_include_tag "https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?v=3.exp&libraries=places" %> <%=javascript_include_tag "map_new_marker_drag"%> , and it generated this <script src="https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?v=3.exp&amp;libraries=places"></script> <script src="https://maps.gstatic.com/cat_js/intl/en_us/mapfiles/api-3/17/2/%7Bmain,places%7D.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="/assets/map_new_marker_drag.js?body=1"></script> and the same error Uncaught ReferenceError : google is undefined. • Am I using too much memory? (Rails on EC2 with Resque)

• Android: how can i tell if the soft keyboard is showing or not?

  Heres the dilemma: I am showing a screen with 3 input fields and 2 buttons inside of a tab(there are 3 tabs total, and they are on the bottom of the screen). the 2 buttons are set to the bottom left and right of the screen, right above the tabs. when i click on an input field, the tabs and buttons are all pushed up on top of the keyboard. i desire to only push the buttons up, and leave the tabs where they originally are, on the bottom. i am thinking of setting the visibility of the tabs to GONE once i determine that the soft keyboard is showing, and visibility to VISIBLE once the soft keyboard is gone. is there some kind of listener for the soft keyboard, or maybe the input field? maybe some tricky use of OnFocusChangeListener for the edit text? How can i determine whether the keyboard is visible or not?

  I would like to have a button on a web page with the following behavior: On the first click, open a pop-up. On later clicks, if the pop-up is still open, just bring it to the front. If not, re-open. The below code generally works in Firefox, Safari, and IE8 (see here for Chrome woes). However, I have found a failure mode in Firefox that I don't know how to deal with: If for some reason the user has opened a second tab in the pop-up window and that second tab has focus within that window, the popupWindow.focus() command fails to have any effect. (If the first tab has focus within that window, everything works just great.) • Apache FilesMatch regexp: Can it match by the cache buster 10 digit (rails generated) following the filename?

  According to the apache FilesMatch docs: The FilesMatch directive provides for access control by filename Basically, I only want to set an expires header for resources that have a 10 digit "cache buster" id appended to the name. So, here is my attempt at such a thing in my httpd.conf <FilesMatch "(jpg|jpeg|png|gif|js|css)\?\d{10}$"> ExpiresActive On ExpiresDefault "now plus 5 minutes" </FilesMatch> And here is an example of a resource I want to match: http://localhost:3000/images/of/elvis/eating-a-bacon-sandwich.png?1306277384 Now obviously my FilesMatch regexp is not matching so I am guessing 1 of 2 things is happening. Either my regexp is wonky or the '?1231231231' cache busting part of the file is not part of what apache considers part of the filename. Can anybody confirm and/or give me a way to cache only those resources that will not persist beyond the next deploy?

  I want to provide a clickthrough on the list in a tab which opens another view. I need to open the new view within the same tab. I then need to provide a back button on the changed layout to change the view to original view. I have tried this. Intent intentA = new Intent(this, AView.class); Now I am trying to access the tabSpec from main activity class[MainTabView] and set the intent as follows. MainTabView.tabSpec1.setContent(intentA); MainTabView.mTabHost.setCurrentTab(0); MainTabView.mTabHost.invalidate(); But this does not change the view immediately but changes it when I go to another tab and come to the starting tab. How can I make it to refresh it as soon as the content has been changed to another intent?

• JQuery Tabs; Google Map is shown with just one tile

  Yes this problem is common and I have seen numerous solution on this site but none of them were helpful. I know that re-sizing will fix the problem. Not a jQuery expert and I don't know how to re-size the map after the page has been loaded and Headline 3 is active. I have created a JFiddle example. • Is there a better way to detab (expand tabs) using Perl?

  I wanted to detab my source files. (Please, no flame about WHY I wanted to detab my sources. That's not the point :-) I couldn't find a utility to do that. Eclipse didn't do it for me, so I implemented my own. I couldn't fit it into a one liner (-e) program. I came with the following, which did the job just fine. while( <> ) { while( /\t/ ) { s/^(([^\t]{4})*)\t/$1 /; s/^((([^\t]{4})*)[^\t]{1})\t/$1 /; s/^((([^\t]{4})*)[^\t]{2})\t/$1 /; s/^((([^\t]{4})*)[^\t]{3})\t/$1 /; } print; } However, it makes me wonder if Perl - the champion language of processing text - is the right tool. The code doesn't seem very elegant. If I had to detab source that assume tab=8 spaces, the code would look even worse. Specifically because I can think of a deterministic state machine with only 4 states to do the job. I have a feeling that a more elegant solution exists. Am I missing a Perl idiom? In the spirit of TIMTOWTDI I'm curious about the other ways to do it. u.

• Heroku and Github integration (how to structure the project)

  I'm creating a webservice and I want to store the source on github and run the app on heroku. I haven't seen my exact scenario addressed anywhere on the 'net so far, so I'll ask it here: I want to have the following directory structure: /project .git README <-- project readme file TODO.otl <-- project outline ... <-- other project-related stuff /my_rails_app app config ... README <-- rails' readme file In the above, project corresponds to http://github.com/myuser/project, and my_rails_app is the code that should be pushed to heroku. Do I need a separate branch for the rails app, or is there a simpler way that I'm missing? I guess my project-related non-rails files could live in my_rails_app, but the rails README already lives there and it seems inconsistent to overwrite that. However, if I leave it, my github page for the rails app will contain the rails readme, which makes no sense. Thanks, Noah P.S. I tried just setting it up as described above and running git push heroku from the main project folder. Of course, heroku doesn't know I want to deploy the subfolder: -----> Heroku receiving push ! Heroku push rejected, no Rails or Rack app detected.

  I'm trying to do a manual jQuery AJAX request the following way: $("#user_plan_id").change(function() { $("#plan_container").load('/plans/' + this.value); }); I have the "rails.js" file included in my header, and a "<%= csrf_meta_tag %". I see from my log that the request IS getting to the server (although without the authenticity token... does rails.js even do this?), but the response is a 302 (Found) rather than 200, and no data actually gets rendered. Any ideas? Edit: I now see that the first request redirects, and the proper partial gets rendered on the redirect. However, the 2nd response's body (on the client-side) is still empty. I'm guessing jQuery uses the first response and doesn't have a listener set up for the redirect. How do I get around this? Also, another note: the page doing the requesting is an HTTPS page. Here is what my log says: Started GET "/plans/221168073" for 127.0.0.1 at Tue Jun 15 01:24:06 -0400 2010 Processing by PlansController#show as HTML Parameters: {"id"=>"221168073"} DEPRECATION WARNING: Using #request_uri is deprecated. Use fullpath instead. (called from ensure_proper_protocol at /Users/ernestsurudo/Sites/vidfolia/vendor/plugins/ssl_requirement/lib/ssl_requirement.rb:57) Redirected to http://vidfolia.com/plans/221168073 Completed 302 Found in 1ms It turns out that if I turn off SSL requirement for that page, it works! I still have no idea why, though. So I suppose my question is: what is the workaround?

  I am trying to serve a Rails application using Passenger and Apache on a Ubuntu server. The Passenger installation instructions say I should add the following to my Apache configuration file - I assume this is /etc/apache2/httpd.conf. <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName www.yourhost.com DocumentRoot /somewhere/public # <-- be sure to point to 'public'! <Directory /somewhere/public> AllowOverride all # <-- relax Apache security settings Options -MultiViews # <-- MultiViews must be turned off </Directory> </VirtualHost> However, I do not yet have a domain pointing at my server, so I'm not sure what I should put for the ServerName parameter. I have tried the IP address, but when I do that, restarting Apache gives apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName [Sun Jan 17 12:49:26 2010] [error] VirtualHost *:80 -- mixing * ports and non-* ports with a NameVirtualHost address is not supported, proceeding with undefined results apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName [Sun Jan 17 12:49:36 2010] [error] VirtualHost *:80 -- mixing * ports and non-* ports with a NameVirtualHost address is not supported, proceeding with undefined results and pointing the browser at the IP address gives a 500 Internal Server Error. But now pointing my browser at the server's IP address just gives a page saying "It works!" - presumably this is a default page, but I'm not sure where this is being served from. I might be wrong in thinking that the reason I have been unable to get this to work is related to not having a domain name. This is the first time I have used Apache directly - any help would be most gratefully received!

Should I uninstall the older versions of these gems?
