  • Java. Outside classes accessing protected methods.

    - by Jake
Suppose I have a class in my package org.jake and it has a method with default access (no modifier). Then the method is visible inside the package only. However, when someone receives the jar of my framework, what is to stop them from writing a new class, declaring its package as org.jake, and using my supposedly invisible method? In other words, is there anything I can do to prevent them from doing that?

  • iPhone vertical toggle switch

    - by nan
I'm trying to create a vertical toggle switch control for the iPhone (along the lines of UISwitch but vertical sliding). I was wondering whether an existing control already existed or if there are any good tutorials that explain the basics of creating custom controls for the iPhone. Currently I've tried using affine transforms to create the vertical switch from a basic UIswitch, and it works except that the slider is too small compared to the slider track, thus I'm looking for information on writing custom controls. Any direction is much appreciated.

  • Apache FOP in Visual Studio 2008

    - by Igman
I am writing some XML - PDF generating templates in Apache FOP for an asp web app. I need to use Visual Studio for my development. Visual studio has great editing and auto complete for regular XSL, I was wondering if there is any way to add this functionality for FOP tags. At least is there a way to stop it from thinking the file is hopelessly broken due to the tags? Thanks.

  • 301 versus inline rewrites

    - by Kristoffer S Hansen
I'm in the process of adding 'pretty' URLs to an existing CMS, the menu is auto generated and the new 'pretty' URLs are to be handled independently as a seperate module. The auto-generated menu allways has URLs that look like this index.php?menu_id=n which ofcourse we would like to see as eg. /news or /products I'm currently at the point where I have to decide if I'm going to rewrite all output of the current system or simply put in a hook where I redirect to the 'pretty' URL. To put it differently, should i connect to the database, fetch all 'pretty' URLs, run through the existing output from WYSIWYG's, news modules, forums etc. and do some str_replace or other string manipulation (which I think would be a rather tedious and boring process), or should I simply hook in and throw a 301 redirecting index.php?menu_id=3 to /news will Google (or other search engines) penalize me for having 301's in the menus?

  • .net Listview control will only display largeIcon.

    - by Redshirt
I'm using the RC of visual Studio 2010. Writing a .net 3.5 application. When I launch the app, the listview control only shows in LargeIcon view. This is not the view I want. I've set the View property in the designer with no success. I've even tried to explicitly set the view during runtime lvAvailableItems.View = View.Tile; Has anyone else had this issue, and if so what was your workaround.

    - by Pranali Desai
Hi All, I am writing an application and for this to make it safe I have decided to HtmlEncode and HtmlDecode the data to avoid Javascript Injection and Paramaterised queries to avoid Sql Script injection. But I want to know whether these are the best ways to avoid these attacks and what are the other ways to damage the application that I should take into consideration.

  • How does cobol store and retrieve data?

    - by controlfreak123
I'm starting to learn about COBOL. I have some experience writing programs that deal with sql databases and I guess I'm confused how cobol stores and retrieves data that is stored in a mainframe for example. I know that it's not like relational databases but every example program I've seen takes data straight from the command line and I know thats not how real world COBOL programs process the data. Can someone explain or show me a good resource that can explain it?

  • Detect file creation date on iPhone OS?

    - by Greg Maletic
I was planning on writing some code whose logic was based upon testing the creation date of a particular file in my app's Documents folder. Turns out, when I call -[NSFileManager attributesOfItemAtPath:error:], NSFileCreationDate isn't one of the provided attributes. Is there no way to discover a file's creation date? Thanks.

  • What are the disadvantages to declaring Scala case classes?

    - by Graham Lea
If you're writing code that's using lots of beautiful, immutable data structures, case classes appear to be a godsend, giving you all of the following for free with just one keyword: Everything immutable by default Getters automatically defined Decent toString() implementation Compliant equals() and hashCode() Companion object with unapply() method for matching But what are the disadvantages of defining an immutable data structure as a case class? What restrictions does it place on the class or its clients? Are there situations where you should prefer a non-case class?

  • Example: Objective C method alongside a php method

    - by Nic Hubbard
I am very used to javascript and php programing, and I just jumped into programing Objective C. After working with it for a few weeks, the methods still confused me, as to how it is passing params, and how the methods are named. Since I am used to php, I am used to seeing: function myFunc($param1, $param2, $param3, $param4) { return FALSE; } Could someone show me how this would be written in Objective C, so that I can get used to writing methods that have parameters?

  • Calculating rgb vals for BufferedImage

    - by Hamza Yerlikaya

  • Use of XMLHttpRequest in Dashboard widget failing

    - by Peter Zion
I am unable to get an XMLHttpRequest object to work correctly in a Dashboard widget I am writing. I've isolated it to a trivial example not working in the global scope of the main.js file: xhr = new XMLHttpRequest; xhr.open( 'GET', "http://google.com", false ); xhr.send(''); When the last line is executed I get the error "ABORT_ERR: XMLHttpRequest Exception 102" (this is in the Dashcode debugger). Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong here?

  • Sitemaps on multiple front end servers using a http handler, is that a good idea?

    - by Rihan Meij
Question 1 We would like to generate a site map for our CMS site We have multiple front end servers with approx a million articles. Environment multiple MS SQL servers multiple front end servers (load balanced) ASP.net - and IIS 6 Windows 2003 To have the site maps (the site map index file, and the site map files) physically on the front end servers will be a operations nightmare and error prone. So we are considering using http handlers instead so that it does not matter what server gets the request, it will be able to serve the correct xml file. Question 2 If we ping Google each time we publish a new article will that effect us negatively if that happens more than once a hour. Thanks!

  • Android Development Tips, Tricks & Gotchas

    - by Mat Nadrofsky
I'm starting down the road of Android Development. At this point I'm looking for some insight from other developers who have been doing 'droid development and have some experience to share with someone who is just starting out. This can be anything from API to AVM to IDE. Any unexpected things come up while building your apps? Any tips for project layout or organization that help facilitate the deployment process to the Android AppStore? Any patterns which specifically helped in a particular situation? Even links to great blogs or sample apps and resources beyond those which you can grab from Google Code would be appreciated.

  • Unable to cast lists with Reflection in C#

    - by DrLazer
I am having a lot of trouble with Reflection in C# at the moment. The app I am writing allows the user to modify the attributes of certain objects using a config file. I want to be able to save the object model (users project) to XML. The function below is called in the middle of a foreach loop, looping through a list of objects that contain all the other objects in the project within them. The idea is, that it works recursively to translate the object model into XML. Dont worry about the call to "Unreal" that just modifes the name of the objects slightly if they contain certain words. private void ReflectToXML(object anObject, XmlElement parentElement) { Type aType = anObject.GetType(); XmlElement anXmlElement = m_xml.CreateElement(Unreal(aType.Name)); parentElement.AppendChild(anXmlElement); PropertyInfo[] pinfos = aType.GetProperties(); //loop through this objects public attributes foreach (PropertyInfo aInfo in pinfos) { //if the attribute is a list Type propertyType = aInfo.PropertyType; if ((propertyType.IsGenericType)&&(propertyType.GetGenericTypeDefinition() == typeof(List<>))) { List<object> listObjects = (aInfo.GetValue(anObject, null) as List<object>); foreach (object aListObject in listObjects) { ReflectToXML(aListObject, anXmlElement); } } //attribute is not a list else anXmlElement.SetAttribute(aInfo.Name, ""); } } If an object attributes are just strings then it should be writing them out as string attributes in the XML. If an objects attributes are lists, then it should recursively call "ReflectToXML" passing itself in as a parameter, thereby creating the nested structure I require that nicely reflect the object model in memory. The problem I have is with the line List<object> listObjects = (aInfo.GetValue(anObject, null) as List<object>); The cast doesn't work and it just returns null. While debugging I changed the line to object temp = aInfo.GetValue(anObject, null); slapped a breakpoint on it to see what "GetValue" was returning. It returns a "Generic list of objects" Surely I should be able to cast that? The annoying thing is that temp becomes a generic list of objects but because i declared temp as a singular object, I can't loop through it because it has no Enumerator. How can I loop through a list of objects when I only have it as a propertyInfo of a class? I know at this point I will only be saving a list of empty strings out anyway, but thats fine. I would be happy to see the structure save out for now. Thanks in advance

  • learning OO with PHP

    - by dole doug
Hi there I've started to learn OO programming, but using the PHP language with the help of the "PHP 5 Objects, Patterns, and Practice" book. The thing is that I wish to learn to use into same time the CakePHP framework which make use a lot of the MVC pattern. Because I don't know much about OO and less about MVC I wish to understand the later one but assumptions I make with my OO knowledges might have bad impact on long term. Does anyone know a good tutorial about what means MVC (more than cakephp manual says about it, but more easy to read/understand than wikipedia)? TY

  • Web publishing system with code highlighting

    - by Dragos Toader
I'd like to publish some of the many programs I've written on the web. Is there a syntax highlighting Linux web publishing application (CMS/Blog/RoR app) that displays syntax for C++, Python, Bash scripts, SQL, VBA, awk, Erlang, java, makefiles, Ruby, Pascal and other languages? The more syntax settings configuration files, the better. The extensions I have in Textpad (for which I have syntax highlighting -- syn files) are .as, .asm, .asp, .awk, .bas, .bat, .c, .conf, .cpp, .cs, .ctl, .dfm, .dsc, .erl, .fnc, .h, .hpp, .inf, .ini, .jav, .java, .mak, .nsh, .nsi, .ora, .pas, .pkb, .pks, .pl, .prc, .py, .reg, .rsp, .sh, .sql, .syn, .tcl, .trg, .vw, .xml, .xsl, .xslfo

  • C or C++ to write a compiler?

    - by H.Josef
I want to write a compiler for a custom markup language, I want to get optimum performance and I also want to have a good scalable design. Multi-paradigm programming language (C++) is more suitable to implement modern design patterns, but I think that will degrade performance a little bit (think of RTTI for example) which more or less might make C a better choice. I wonder what is the best language (C, C++ or even objective C) if someone wants to create a modern compiler (in the sense of complying to modern software engineering principles as a software) that is fast, efficient, and well designed.

  • insert BibTeX article *here*, not at the end of the article

    - by vy32
I've seen this before, but I just can't find it. I am writing a resume and want to include the articles from my bibtex file. If I write \cite{FOO} then they all appear at the end. I know that there is some way to say \something{FOO} and the FOO reference appears here. Basically, I want this section of my CV to look like: \something{FOO1} \something{FOO2} What is the \something? Thanks.

  • how can I check my rsa passphrase?

    - by joachim
I think I've forgotten my RSA passphrase again. Is there a way to have my local command line prompt me for it so I can check if I at least what I remember it as is correct, so I don't needlessly change it? Next time I'm writing it on a post-it ;)
