• Does Ruby on Rails "has_many" array provide data on a "need to know" basis?

  On Ruby on Rails, say, if the Actor model object is Tom Hanks, and the "has_many" fans is 20,000 Fan objects, then actor.fans gives an Array with 20,000 elements. Probably, the elements are not pre-populated with values? Otherwise, getting each Actor object from the DB can be extremely time consuming. So it is on a "need to know" basis? So does it pull data when I access actor.fans[500], and pull data when I access actor.fans[0]? If it jumps from each record to record, then it won't be able to optimize performance by doing sequential read, which can be faster on the hard disk because those records could be in the nearby sector / platter layer -- for example, if the program touches 2 random elements, then it will be faster just to read those 2 records, but what if it touches all elements in random order, then it may be faster just to read all records in a sequential way, and then process the random elements. But how will RoR know whether I am doing only a few random elements or all elements in random?

• Service injection into Controller (Spring MVC)

  Hi I have a Spring web application, I have built it up to the controller stage and I could inject my Daos, into my Services fine. Now when I want to inject my Service into my controller i get an error for dependency with the Dao and further down the sessionFactory. I don't want to inject these again cause this will ultimately lead me to eventually create a data source but I have my Daos for data access and they already know about sessionFactory. • MySQL calling in Username to show instead of ID!

  I have a users table, books table and authors table. An author can have many books, while a user can also have many books. (This is how my DB is currently setup). As I'm pretty new to So far my setup is like bookview.php?book_id=23 from accessing authors page, then seeing all books for the author. The single book's details are all displayed on this new page...I can get the output to display the user ID associated with the book, but not the user name, and this also applies for the author's name, I can the author ID to display, but not the name, so somewhere in the query below I am not calling in the correct values: SELECT users.user_id, authors.author_id, books.book_id, books.bookname, books.bookprice, books.bookplot FROM books INNER JOIN authors on books.book_id = authors.book_id INNER JOIN users ON books.book_id = users.user_id WHERE books.book_id=" . $book_id; Could someone help me correct this so I can display the author name and user name both associated with the book! • measuring performance - using real clicks vs "ab" command

  I have a web site in closed beta, developed in Django, runs with Mysql on Debian. In the last few days, the main page has been showing a slowdown. For every ten clicks, one or two receives extremely slow response (10 secs or more), others are as fast as they used to be. When I was searching for the problem, I ran into this issue that I couldn't grasp: top command shows that when I request the main page, mysql shoots up to 90% - 100% cpu usage. I get the page just as the cpu use gets back to normal. So, I thought, it is db. Then I called ab with parameters -n 1000 -c 5, I got decent performance, about 100 pages per second, just as it was before the slowdown. I would imagine a worse performance as 10-20% of requests take 10 secs to load. Is this conflict between ab and "real" clicks normal, or am I using ab in a wrong configuration?

  I've huge a table (a few billion rows) with a clustered index and two non-clustered indices. A BULK INSERT operation produces 112000 reads and only 383 writes (duration 19948ms). It's very confusing to me. Why do reads exceed writes? • SQL Server Query Slow from PHP, but FAST from SQL Mgt Studio - WHY???

  I have a fast running query (sub 1 sec) when I execute the query in SQL Server Mgt Studio, but when I run the exact same query in PHP (on the same db instace) using FreeTDS v8, mssql_query(), it takes much longer (70+ seconds). The tables I'm hitting have an index on a date field that I'm using in the Where clause. Could it be that PHP's mssql functions aren't utilizing the index? I have also tried putting the query inside a stored procedure, then executing the SP from PHP - the same results in time difference occurs. I have also tried adding a WITH ( INDEX( .. ) ) clause on the table where that has the date index, but no luck either. • NHibernate and SetSessionAuth audit columns

  We have audit columns set by triggers. For obscure security reasons predating my tenure and out of my control, we log in with a generic user, and do a 'set session authorization' to change the user to the db user of the user who is logged in. When we converted to NHibernate, it creates a whole new session and jacks everything up when we try to do a set session auth, so we turned the set session auth off... Now we are trying to find out a way to get NHibernate to let us do 'set session authorization' without recycling the session on us, so we can use our existing trigger based audit column stuff with both legacy apps, and our new NHibernate apps. It's not a ideal soloution, or the best way to do it even, but is it possible? I was hoping there was a alternate interface that allowed this kind of access. Does anyone know how to do it, or can you point me towards and good hints? Thanks, Eric-

  I'm serving up PDFs from a SQL db and presenting them in the browser. I'm trying to figure out a way to embed a number in the PDF dynamically that is the recordID for that PDFs SQL record so that when the user hits the submit button and the form submits its XML data to my submission page I can tell which PDF this is. If there is some way of changing the submission URL on the fly then I could do a query string to pass my self the recordID. I'm not generating the PDF in code, its being created by hand and then uploaded to my site.

  Hello all I'm currently developing a page where the user fills out a form, and when submitted they are taken to the next page. When on the next page, I want to have it so that if the user went back to the previous page using the back button, or hit refresh, the submission will not be saved into the DB. Now I recall reading somewhere that if you had a way to make each submission unique, this issue is averted, but after screwing around for hours on end, for the life of me I cannot recall how this could be done (using PHP), so long story short has anyone ran into this, and if so, what was your solution?

  Hi Guys, I have a similar issue.. I have HTML stored in DB clob. I am retrieving that and converting to XHTML using TIDY.jar. Once i got XHTML then using FOP i am converting to XSL-FO. Finally XSL-FO is rendering in PDF. Previously everything is working fine with Linux-WAS5-java1.4. Recently we migrated the apps to Linux-WAS6-Java1.5. Now XHTML to XSL-FO is messing up everything. XSL-FO contains ???(Question marks) in the place of Euro, spase(nbsp), Agrave, egrave ..etc. I tried changing the JVM encoding to UTF-8 and also i have modified my servlet request and response to support UTF-8. I am helfless and unable to figure where exactly the issue is coming out. Can someone please check this and suggest me some solution. Thanks in advance

  I'm working on a project that requires me to load tables based on table names stored in another table. More tables will be added to the DB (and by someone else), so creating NHibernate mapping files for each table isn't an option. Does anyone know if it is possible to load tables dynamically using NHibernate? Edit: I should add that I'm on .NET 2.0, so I can't use Fluent NHibernate. Thanks for the suggestion though guys. I will use that as evidence in convincing my associates to upgrade.

  Hello, I want to be able to store -11.99 and +11.99 kind of values in mysql db I am thinking of decimals instead of varchar. But reading mysql site I found out that its incompatible with older versions of mysql As a result of the change from string to numeric format for DECIMAL storage, DECIMAL columns no longer store a leading + or - character or leading 0 digits. Before MySQL 5.0.3, if you inserted +0003.1 into a DECIMAL(5,1) column, it was stored as +0003.1. As of MySQL 5.0.3, it is stored as 3.1. For negative numbers, a literal - character is no longer stored. Applications that rely on the older behavior must be modified to account for this change. So what should be the data type, If I have to give up varchar and make it compatible with older versions too?

I need all the robustness, but with none of the trade-offs.

  Ok this is a simple setup: DB has a view with personnel who have not been added to the system. The AutoComplete dynamically lists a numeric column field from the view. (Using Linq2SQL) (with autotracking off) Once this number is consumed - a refresh is done on the sqlserver's view. The Problem: This number still shows up in the Autocomplete UNTIL the VS WebDev Server is closed. Question: Why is the WebDev caching the data?   G'day guys, I'm using fasterCSV and a rake script to parse a csv with about 30 columns into my rails db for a 'Trade' item. The script works fine when all of the values are set to strings, but when I change it to a decimal, int or other value, everything goes to hell. Wondering if fasterCSV has built in int etc parsing or whether I'll have to manage these within my model. Basically, I'm given a giant amount of trades data, need to import it, and then need to provide feedback with say the average trade volume, the times, etc. I understand I can do that all with the wonderful records provided to me by activeRecord but wondered if there was an easier way to populate a rather large Database with a given CSV? Several of the fields don't have values for certain rows, fasterCSV seems to work perfectly when they're all strings, but not when I try to get decimal or other.

Steps taken: App Pool created with delegation service acct Site / Virtual dir running with Integrated Windows auth only Made sure site itself can use kerberos KB 215383 Service acct added to IIS_WPG group Service acct added to "act as part of operating system" under Local Security settings Service acct added to Log on as service under Local Security Settings HTTP SPN set for web address + service account (and FQDN) MSSQLSvc SPN set for sql box and domain acct sql is running as Trust for delegation turned on service acct, specified services, and sql service acct After all this, Im still getting the exact same error from when I started.   When creating a record "grid" with custom paging what is the best/optimal way to query the total number of records as well as the records start-end using C#? SQL to return paged record set: SELECT Some, Columns, Here FROM ( SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY Column ASC) AS RowId, * FROM Records WHERE (...) ) AS tbl WHERE ((RowId > @Offset) AND (RowId <= (@Offset + @PageSize)) ) SQL to count total number of records: SELECT COUNT(*) FROM Records WHERE (...) Right now, I make two trips to the server: one for getting the records, and the other for counting the total number of records. What is/are the best way(s) to combine these queries to avoid multiple DB trips?
