• How do I correctly use Unity to pass a ConnectionString to my repository classes?

  I've literally just started using the Unity Application Blocks Dependency Injection library from Microsoft, and I've come unstuck. This is my IoC class that'll handle the instantiation of my concrete classes to their interface types (so I don't have to keep called Resolve on the IoC container each time I want a repository in my controller): public class IoC { public static void Intialise(UnityConfigurationSection section, string connectionString) { _connectionString = connectionString; _container = new UnityContainer(); section.Configure(_container); } private static IUnityContainer _container; private static string _connectionString; public static IMovementRepository MovementRepository { get { return _container.Resolve<IMovementRepository>(); } } } So, the idea is that from my Controller, I can just do the following: _repository = IoC.MovementRepository; I am currently getting the error: Exception is: InvalidOperationException - The type String cannot be constructed. You must configure the container to supply this value. Now, I'm assuming this is because my mapped concrete implementation requires a single string parameter for its constructor. The concrete class is as follows: public sealed class MovementRepository : Repository, IMovementRepository { public MovementRepository(string connectionString) : base(connectionString) { } } Which inherits from: public abstract class Repository { public Repository(string connectionString) { _connectionString = connectionString; } public virtual string ConnectionString { get { return _connectionString; } } private readonly string _connectionString; } Now, am I doing this the correct way? Should I not have a constructor in my concrete implementation of a loosely coupled type? I.e. should I remove the constructor and just make the ConnectionString property a Get/Set so I can do the following: public static IMovementRepository MovementRepository { get { return _container.Resolve<IMovementRepository>( new ParameterOverrides { { "ConnectionString", _connectionString } }.OnType<IMovementRepository>() ); } } So, I basically wish to know how to get my connection string to my concrete type in the correct way that matches the IoC rules and keeps my Controller and concrete repositories loosely coupled so I can easily change the DataSource at a later date.

If i select one record in the grid1 and click on the button that record has to load in the second record.I am able to load that selected record in the second grid using document.location.reload(true);with this, the total page is refreshing.but i want to refresh grid2 only. I want to refresh grid2 only after click on the button.how can i refresh/reload grid2.

• Why does the ASP.Net Web Forms model "suck"?

  I've heard Jeff Atwood, Joel Spolsky, and many other legendary people talk about how the ASP.Net Web Forms model sucks. (So this question is kind of directed to them, hopefully Jeff is reading) Now, I highly respect their opinion, given their background and expertise, but truth be told, I absolutely LOVE ASP.Net. I think the model is brilliant, and it sucks if you have no idea what you're doing, but once you understand how to control ViewState, when to use handlers instead of pages, etc, it is generations ahead of all the other models. So every time I hear someone complain about how it sucks, I can't help ask the same question... Why? What is it that's so bad about it? I appreciate all opinions. I'm assuming there's probably a post at Jeff's blog talking about this too...

• Saving twice don't update my object in JDO

  Hello I have an object persisted in the GAE datastore using JDO. The object looks like this: public class MyObject implements Serializable, StoreCallback { @PrimaryKey @Persistent(valueStrategy = IdGeneratorStrategy.IDENTITY) @Extension(vendorName="datanucleus", key="gae.encoded-pk", value="true") private String id; @Persistent private String firstId; ... } As usually when the object is stored for the first time a new id value is generated for the identifier. I need that if I don't provide a value for firstId it sets the same value as the id. I don't want to solve it with a special getter which checks for null value in firstId and then return the id value because I want to make queries relating on firstId. I can do it in this way by saving the object twice (Probably there's a better way to do this, but I'll do it in this way until I find a better one). But it is not working. when I debug it I can see that result.firstId is set with the id value and it seems to be persisted, but when I go into the datastore I see that firstId is null (as it was saved the first time). This save method is in my DAO and it is called in another save method in the service annotated with @Transactional. The generated url from the above is: h**p://localhost:53235/test/home/index?universe=MyUniverse. I can only get it to work, if I specify the name of the route: <%=Html.RouteLink("Link", "default", new { universe = "MyUniverse" })%> Am I missing something?

• Options for keeping models and the UI in sync (in a desktop application context)

  In my experience I have only had 2 patterns work for large-scale desktop application development when trying to keep the model and UI in sync. 1-An eventbus approach via a shared eventbus command objects are fired (ie:UserDemographicsUpdatedEvent) and have various parts of the UI update if they are bound to the same user object updated in this event. 2-Attempt to bind the UI directly to the model adding listeners to the model itself as needed. I find this approach rather clunky as it pollutes the domain model. Does anybody have other suggestions? In a web application with something like JSP binding to the model is easy as you ussually only care about the state of the model at the time your request comes in, not so in a desktop type application. Any ideas?

• How can I use a value from a session variable as part of the group name in signalR

  Hi I am trying to set up signalR to distribute messages to web users the problem is that the one site holds different 'areas' and also 'user types'. The Area is decided when the user visits the site by passing a url parameter, this is then stored in a session variable, The 'user type' is by default not logged in then changed when the user logs in to there user type (returned from a webservice) and stored in a User object. My aim was to connect to the hub using signalR when the user visits the site and add the users connectionId to a groupname, using the 'area id' from the session and the 'user type id' from the User object in the context. The problem I am having is that I can obtain the user id but when it comes to the area id signalR cannot access the session. I understand the reasoning behind not allowing the session available in signalR but does any one know if there is a way to enable this or an alternative way that I can gain access to the users area so that I can create these unique groups.

Do I need to rename any $safesolutionname$ manually? It's not make any sense. What the porpuse of CodeCampServerPackage? This archive contains a deployment files only.

  I have an update method in my users controller that I call from a HTTPService in Flex 4. • Using VRaptor3 with Tomcat UnpackWARs property setted to false

  Hi there, I have to deploy my web app to a tomcat container with the unpackWARs property defined to false. When I do that, although the application is successfully deployed, when I try to access my url I always got a 404 error. I just don't receive that error when I try to access a direct file like index.html for instance. But I can't do that, the VRaptor framework is responsible for routing my url to the jsp file. Does anyone know if I have do anything else? Thanx

• How do I retrieve row ID from an MVCContrib HTML Grid?

  Hi, I currently have a product view page that contains an MVCContrib HTML Grid with a select link at the beginning of each row. If the select link is clicked, it takes me to a different page. My question is whether it is possible to retrieve the productID from the row that is selected and pass that to the next page. Maybe this is posible to do with a session variable but im not sure. • Inserting Multiple Records in SQL2000

  I have a web app that currently is inserting x (between 1 + 40) records into a table that contains about 5 fields, via a linq-2-sql-stored procedure in a loop. Would it be better to manually write the SQL Inserts to say a string builder and run them against the database when the loops completed rather than 30 transactions? or should I just accept this is negligible for such a small number of inserts.

• How can i Execute a Controller's ActionMethod programatically?

  Hi folks, I'm trying to execute a controller's Action Method programatically and I'm not sure how. Scenario: When my ControllerFactory fails to find the controller, I wish it to manually execute a single action method which i have on a simple, custom controller. I don't want to rely on using any route data to determine the controller/method .. because that route might not have been wired up. Eg. // NOTE: Error handling removed from this example. public class MyControllerFactory : DefaultControllerFactory { protected override IController GetControllerInstance(Type controllerType) { IController result = null; // Try and load the controller, based on the controllerType argument. // ... snip // Did we retrieve a controller? if (controller == null) { result = new MyCustomController(); ((MyCustomController)result).Execute404NotFound(); // <-- HERE! } return result; } } .. and that method is .. public static void Execute404NotFound(this Controller controller) { result = new 404NotFound(); // Setup any ViewData.Model stuff. result.ExecuteResult(controller.ControllerContext); // <-- RUNTIME // ERROR's HERE } Now, when I run the controller factory fails to find a controller, i then manually create my own basic controller. I then call the extension method 'Execute404NotFound' on this controller instance. That's fine .. until it runs the ExecuteResult(..) method. Why? the controller has no ControllerContext data. As such, the ExecuteResult crashes because it requires some ControllerContext. So - can someone out there help me? see what I'm doing wrong. Remember - i'm trying to get my controller factory to manually / programmatically call a method on a controller which of course would return an ActionResult. Please help!

• em.persist seems doesn't persist data on postgreSQL db

  I've got a simple java main which must write bean data on a PostgreSQL database. I use Entity manager to persist or update object. I use hibernate and toplink driver connection which are specified in persistence.xml file.   Im using sharp architecture 1.6 framework to create a MVC2 app. I have two areas, "Business", "Content". Im using BusinessAreaRegistration.cs and ContentAreaRegistration.cs to register the areas by using AreaRegistration.RegisterAllAreas(). The Content area gets routed just fine, but the business area does not work at all. gooing to /business/businessObjects/ show the error Server Error in '/' Application. The resource cannot be found. How can I register both areas properly?

• Managing Unique IDs in stateless (web) DB4O applications

  I'm playing around with building a new web application using DB4O - piles of fun and some really interesting stuff learned. The one thing I'm struggling with is DB4O's current lack of support for stateless applications (i.e. web apps, mostly) and the need for automatically-generated IDs. There are a number of creative and interesting approaches that I've been able to find that hook into DB4O's events, use GUIDs rather than numeric IDs or for whatever reason avoid using any system of ID at all. While each approach has its merits, I'm wondering if the less-elegant approach might equally be the best fit. Consider the following pseudo-code: If ID == 0 or null Set ID = (typeof(myObject)).Count myObject.Save It seems like such a blindingly simple approach, it's usually about here that I start thinking, "I've missed something really obvious". • Design Decision - Scaling out web based application's architecture

  This question is about design decision. I am currently working on a web project that will have 40K users to start with and in couple of month expected to grow 50M users (not concurrent users though). I would like to have a architecture that can be scaled out easily without much effort. In order to explain, I would like to use a trivial scenario. Lets say, User entities and services such as CreateUser, AuthenticateUser etc., are a simple method calls for the Page Controllers. But once the traffic increases, for example, authenticating user (or such services related to user entities) has to be moved out to a different internal server to spread the load. But at the same time using RPC calls over the network when the user count is 40K would become overkill. My proposal was to use IPC initially and when we need to scale out we can interally switch to TCP based RPC calls so that it can easily scale out. For example, I am referring to System.IO.Pipes.NamedPipeStreamServer to start with and move on to a TcpListener later on. If we have proper design that can encapsulate above said approach, it would easy for us to scale out services into multiple network servers but at the same time avoid network calls when the user count is small. Is this is a best approach? Any suggestions would be great .. Note: The database scaling is definetly the second phase optimization so we have already made architectural design in place to easily partition data when traffic increases. The primary bottleneck would be application servers over the time period.

• Advantages/disadvantages of Glassfish v3 Prelude vs Springsource dm server for Web applications?

  Both of these appservers are at least in part OSGI based. One (Glassfish) is obviously J2EE while the other isn't. Now I'm at the stage of choosing a platform for a new project and the natural choice is Glassfish v3 Prelude. This does raise the issue of perhaps we should be using S2AP instead. The question then is this: does the springsource dm server offer any compelling reason to use it over Glassfish? And vice versa.
