• An Open Letter from Lyle Ekdahl, Group Vice President and General Manager, Oracle's JD Edwards

  From Lyle Ekdahl, Group Vice President and General Manager, Oracle's JD Edwards As you may have heard, we recently announced some changes to the way Oracle will offer licensing of technology products with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne. Specifically, we have withdrawn from new sales the product known as JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Technology Foundation ("Blue Stack"). Our motivation for this change is simply to streamline licensing for our customers. Going forward, customers will license Oracle products from Oracle and IBM products from IBM. Customers who are currently licensed for Technology Foundation will continue to receive support--unchanged--through September 30, 2016. This announcement affects how customers license these IBM products; it does not affect Oracle's certification roadmap for IBM products with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne. Customers who are currently running their JD Edwards EnterpriseOne infrastructure using IBM platform components can continue to do so regardless of whether they license these components via Technology Foundation or directly from IBM. New customers choosing to run JD Edwards EnterpriseOne on IBM technology should license JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Core Tools from Oracle while licensing Infrastructure and any licenses of IBM products from IBM. For more information about this announcement, customers should refer to My Oracle Support article 1232453.1 Questions included in the "Frequently Asked Questions" document on My Oracle Support: Is Oracle dropping support for IBM DB2 and IBM WebSphere with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne? No. This announcement affects how customers license these IBM products; it does not affect Oracle's certification roadmap for these products. The JD Edwards EnterpriseOne matrix of supported databases, web servers, and portals remains unchanged, including planned support for IBM DB2, IBM WebSphere Application Server, and IBM WebSphere Portal. Customers who are currently running their JD Edwards EnterpriseOne infrastructure using IBM platform components can continue to do so regardless of whether they license these components via Technology Foundation or directly from IBM. • How to uninstall Ubuntu 12.04 LTS ( installed alongside Win 7 from Boot CD)

  A few days back I installed Ubuntu 12.04 alongside windows. When I put the CD in, the setup said that I should boot from CD and then I can choose from demo to install Ubuntu alongside Windows, I followed the instruction and selected Install alongside Windows 7 from the setup wizard. My Win 7 drive is originally 60 GB but after installing Ubuntu it appears as if it were 43 GB. Now I want to UNINSTALL Ubuntu and get just Win 7 back on. Please guide me how to do this. Presently, at start-up I get a choice to Boot either into Win 7 or Ubuntu. I am new to Ubuntu and Linux both! This is the partition layout as seen on Win 7 :

  A figura abaixo oferece uma visão geral das possibilidades de monitoramento providas pelo Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM), que é uma ferramenta que permite gerenciar a infraestrutura de TI da empresa. Um componente importante da solução é chanado OEM Grid Control. Esse componente permite gerenciar, visualizar e monitorar diversos elementos a partir de uma mesma console. E que elementos podem ser monitorados? No conceito utilizado pelo OEM, os elementos que podem ser monitorados são chamados de Targets, e esses targets envolvem a monitoração de hosts (Windows, Linux, Solaris), Banco de Dados, Middleware, Aplicações Web, Serviços que podem ser customizados pelo administrador, Sistemas e Grupos de targets, além dos aplicativos Oracle. Cada elemento monitorado é ativado através de packs de gerenciamento. Ou seja, há uma série de packs que podem ser adquiridas conforme a necessidade, para permitir a monitoração a partir do próprio OEM Grid Control. Existem packs de monitoramento especiais para banco de dados Oracle, packs de monitoramento para Tomcat, Jboss, WebLogic, SOA Suite, Identity Management. Os plugins permitem o gerenciamento de elementos adicionais, tais como dispositivos de rede, servidores, banco de dados de terceiros (DB2, SQL Server), Vmware, etc. Já os conectores permitem a integração com outros softwares, tais como gerenciadores de requisições de helpdesk, de modo a integrar os alertas gerados pela ferramenta e gerar tickets em ferramentas como CA Service Desk, BMC Remedy e outros. A extensão de funcionalidades é realmente bem vasta. Num próximo post irei comentar sobre o Ops Center, um novo componente que surgiu após a aquisição da Sun. Além do Grid Control e do Ops Center, há outros componentes bem interessantes. A figura abaixo ilustra diversas camadas onde o ferramental Oracle pode ser usado para monitoração. Há uma pack que permite gerenciar os níveis de serviços em todas as camadas ilustradas. Dada uma requisição, pode-se decompor os dados de SLA em cada camada. E há também o Real User Monitoring, que trata de medir a experiência com o usuário. Falarei disso num novo post, mas basicamente a ferramenta permite acompanhar todo o tráfego de rede gerado dos usuários finais até os servidores web, e com isso rastrear como cada usuário usa a aplicação, quanto tempo ele navega pelo site, se ele enfrentou algum tipo de problema, se houve algum pedido não finalizado devido a algum problema na infraestrutura. É uma ferramenta bem interessante, falarei um pouco mais dela depois. E claro, há também componentes para a realização de testes funcionais e de carga. Em breve, aqui no blog :)

• GitHub Integration in Windows Azure Web Site

  Microsoft had just announced an update for Windows Azure Web Site (a.k.a. WAWS). There are four major features added in WAWS which are free scaling mode, GitHub integration, custom domain and multi branches. Since I ‘m working in Node.js and I would like to have my code in GitHub and deployed automatically to my Windows Azure Web Site once I sync my code, this feature is a big good news to me.   It’s very simple to establish the GitHub integration in WAWS. First we need a clean WAWS. In its dashboard page click “Set up Git publishing”. Currently WAWS doesn’t support to change the publish setting. So if you have an existing WAWS which published by TFS or local Git then you have to create a new WAWS and set the Git publishing. Then in the deployment page we can see now WAWS supports three Git publishing modes: - Push my local files to Windows Azure: In this mode we will create a new Git repository on local machine and commit, publish our code to Windows Azure through Git command or some GUI. - Deploy from my GitHub project: In this mode we will have a Git repository created on GitHub. Once we publish our code to GitHub Windows Azure will download the code and trigger a new deployment. - Deploy from my CodePlex project: Similar as the previous one but our code would be in CodePlex repository.   Now let’s back to GitHub and create a new publish repository. Currently WAWS GitHub integration only support for public repositories. The private repositories support will be available in several weeks. We can manage our repositories in GitHub website. But as a windows geek I prefer the GUI tool. So I opened the GitHub for Windows, login with my GitHub account and select the “github” category, click the “add” button to create a new repository on GitHub. You can download the GitHub for Windows here. I specified the repository name, description, local repository, do not check the “Keep this code private”. After few seconds it will create a new repository on GitHub and associate it to my local machine in that folder. We can find this new repository in GitHub website. And in GitHub for Windows we can also find the local repository by selecting the “local” category.   Next, we need to associate this repository with our WAWS. Back to windows developer portal, open the “Deploy from my GitHub project” in the deployment page and click the “Authorize Windows Azure” link. It will bring up a new windows on GitHub which let me allow the Windows Azure application can access your repositories. After we clicked “Allow”, windows azure will retrieve all my GitHub public repositories and let me select which one I want to integrate to this WAWS. I selected the one I had just created in GitHub for Windows. So that’s all. We had completed the GitHub integration configuration. Now let’s have a try. In GitHub for Windows, right click on this local repository and click “open in explorer”. Then I added a simple HTML file. 1: <html> 2: <head> 3: </head> 4: <body> 5: <h1> 6: I came from GitHub, WOW! 7: </h1> 8: </body> 9: </html> Save it and back to GitHub for Windows, commit this change and publish. This will upload our changes to GitHub, and Windows Azure will detect this update and trigger a new deployment. If we went back to azure developer portal we can find the new deployment. And our commit message will be shown as the deployment description as well. • Ubuntu 11.10 cannot boot. It stucks at BusyBox

  I am using Ubuntu 11.10. An hour ago I had my laptop Sony Vaio VPCEB1S1E running. I saw there are updates to install and I installed them. Turned off the laptop and now when I want to turn it on. It loads until BusyBox v1.18.4 appear. I've saw what the people suggest in other askubuntu topics. I've booted Puppy Linux from USB, repaired the partition where the Ubuntu is installed. Rebooted and nothing changed. I saw other suggestions like writing "exit" in the command line when the BusyBox comes. This didn't help neither. I love the Ubuntu OS, but these days I get similar problem with not able to boot OS. The last times I could repair it with Gparted, but then it wasn't problem with the BusyBox, it was something missing in the OS, like "cannot boot /". The same problem occurred on an older version of Ubuntu 10.10 and there I've repaired it again with Gparted.

• Azure Boot Camp

There was a little more upfront discussion of “What is Cloud Computing and Why is it important?” than I thought necessary (I would think that people signing up for a two-day Azure event would already be convinced that it’s a worthwhile thing), but we put on our boots and fired up Visual Studio soon enough. The good news for developers, as with most of Microsoft’s recent initiatives (e.g Silverlight and Windows Phone 7 development), is that you can leverage the skills you already have. If you’ve developed service-oriented applications, you’ve got a big head start. If a free Azure Boot Camp event is coming to your area (here’s the schedule), be sure to check it out. • Adding partitions to dual boot on Windows

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 along side Windows 7 on an HP mini 210 netbook. I have down loaded an iso image OK and got the installation program working but I am having problems with partitioning. I want to keep my Windows installation intact so I am following the 'Other' installation route. I have managed to shrink the main Windows partition down to 50GB leaving 250GB free space but I can't find a way of adding any extra partitions for Ubuntu. The free space gets listed by the installer as 'unusable' but on the graphic at the top its called 'free space'. If I select this and click 'Install Now' I get an error message: 'No root file system is defined'. I have tried clicking the Add, Change Delete and New Partition table buttons with the unusable partition selected and nothing happens. How do I define a root mount point when I do not have any Linux partitions?

While support for the product will continue, Service Pack 2 will go out of support on July 13, 2010. From that date onwards, Microsoft will no longer support or provide free security updates for Windows XP SP2.  Please install the free Service Pack 3 for Windows XP to have the most secure and supported Windows XP platform.Finally, Windows Vista with no Service Packs installed will end support on April 13 2010.  Please install the free Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista to have the most secure and supported Windows Vista platform.   This may have implications for older version of SQL Server that are installed on these products and you should assess whether it is time to upgrade   Chris

• How to change default boot with two Ubuntus?

  I currently have 11.10 and 12.04 Beta running side-by-side. Since installing the beta, I am presented with a GRUB2 menu every time I boot up, which selects 12.04 by default. (Aside: when the 11.10 kernel updated from 3.0.0-16 to 3.0.0-17 this option did not appear in the GRUB2 menu.) When I open Grub Customizer in 11.10, it shows 11.10 kernel 3.0.0-17 as the default, when I open Grub Customizer in 12.04, it shows 12.04 as the default. How can I change GRUB2 to pick the latest 11.10 kernel as the default? (Latest means that if 3.0.0-18 is released it will become the default, and so on.) And also stop displaying the menu (I only boot into the beta when I have something specific to test). Generic answers that apply to any two Ubuntus running side-by-side are preferred.

  Prior to Ubuntu 11.04 I could configure grub so that after the menu is displayed and the system is booting detail of the boot activity appears. Now there's just a blank screen between the menu and gdm login. How do I coax Ubuntu 11.04 to display the boot activity? Dale E. The minute we landed, we were made to feel at home from our host Patrick Fitzgerald. The whole family who run the Guest House were also very friendly and always keen to help us. Since we had people from South Africa to show us all the amazing sights and their traditional ways to live their lives, the two weeks were very enjoyable for all of us and we came much closer together as a group. You can read this in the following parts of this report. Enjoy! The first group of Apprentices in Oracle (from left to right): Maximilian Michel (DE), Jorge Garnacho (ES), Daniel Maull (UK), Adam Griffiths (UK), Guillermo De Las Nieves (ES), Catriona McGill (UK), Ed Dunlop (UK) The Training Well, it’s time to talk about the main purpose of our trip to South Africa: the training. Two weeks, two courses. Servers and Storage. Two weeks to learn as much as possible and get the certificate. First week: Eben Pretorius with Servers Boot Camp. Learning about: • Machines: T1000, T2000, T3, T4, M series; • How to connect to the machines: serial and network connections; • Levels of software: ALOM, ILOM, OBP and of course the operating system, Solaris Combined with the practical part (screwdriver in one hand, and antistatic wristband on the other) makes quite a lot of stuff! But fortunately, Eben was able to tell us about everything without making our brains explode. For the second week: Storage Boot Camp with Deon Van Vuuren. Taking a look at the content: • Storage machines; • Connectors and protocols: SCSi, SAS, SATA Fiber Channel. Again, huge amounts of information, but Deon definitely did a great job and helped us learn it all. At the end, there was just one question left. Were we able to pass the exam and get the certificate? Well, what can we say? Just take a closer look at the picture above and make your conclusions! Our lovely Oracle office in Woodmead (near Johannesburg) We are all very proud to receive certification in “Server and Storage Support Fundamentals” together with our trainer Deon Van Vuuren. • HybridGraphics vga_switcheroo switch to intel at boot

  How can I do that? I have followed this https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HybridGraphics but it didn't work I'm getting the error at boot that the /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch don't exist , so the problem seems to be that the /sys/kernel/debug don't exist when the grub parameters are processed and it is created after the grub parameter processing. So far I have made an alternative method, which works. In rc.local I granted full access to my user to /sys/kernel/debug then also to /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch and then I have made a simple script to switch the graphics to intel and putted it in ~./confif/autostart. The script is executed every time I log in to gnome. It's working however it would be nice if it worked at boot, as is described at that help.ubuntu.com page. Any ideas? Thanks

• Dual Boot Ubuntu 12.04 on a Thinkpad T420 but keep recovery partition

  I have a Thinkpad T420 which runs on Windows 7 Pro and I would like to install Ubuntu 12.04 on it via Dual Boot. But the thing is, I'd like to keep the Thinkvantage Recovery Partition. I've been researching and found this: Install Ubuntu on ThinkPad, recovery section must remain intact and http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Rescue_and_Recovery But the information doesn't seem to be updated for for my situation (the second link indicates that it won't work with Windows 7). Just wonderin' if anyone already has experience doing this? I could create recovery CD/DVD's but I'll be more happy i can keep recovery partition and boot information on the hard drive functional (for future resale purposes). Any Ideas?

• Boot from Ubuntu ISO on a hfsplus partition (macbook pro)

  I would like to be able to boot from an ISO stored on an HFS+ partition (the main partition on my macbook pro). Here is what I've done so far: (writing in shorthand :D) grub> insmod hfs,hfsplus,loopback,part_gpt grub> loopback loop (hd0,gpt2)/location/to/img.io grub> configfile (loop)/boot/grub/loopback.cfg ... This does not work. tab-complete of the (loop) path does not work... However, this does work (tab-complete and all) if the iso comes from my ext3 partition. For particular reasons, I can't have the iso images on the ext3 partition, they need to be kept on the hfs+ partition. What should be done?

• Can't boot freshly burned Ubuntu cd

  So I just burned a Ubuntu 12.04.1 powerpc .iso on a cd for my iMac G5 running Mac OS X 10.4.11 and it won't even recognize the cd. I burned it on my dad's Windows 7 laptop as the process is way easier (just 2 clicks). Mac OS X 10.4.11 gives me an error when it starts and when the CD is in saying "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". What's funny is that I burned a Ubuntu Minimal .iso on a CD and it would totally read that and even boot it though it gave me some errors afterwards and I couldn't install. I even tried going into openfirmware and hitting boot cd:,\tbxi but I get the error "Warning sector size mismatch can't OPEN cd:,\tbxi Can't open device or file" Was there something wrong with the .iso I burned? Mac OS X 10.4.11 won't even mount that .iso it tells me that the HFS file system is corrupt or something, but I know the .iso doesn't contain HFS file system. Any help? I downloaded the .iso from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/precise/release/ubuntu-12.04-desktop-powerpc.iso

• Live CD boot/installation problem, blank screen - 12.04

  I'm trying to install ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64 from my usb stick. When booting from usb I instantly get a blank screen (with a grey box at the left bottom) I checked the live system with my laptop.works well except it also starts of with a black screen and a grey box at the bottom. I figure the Problem is my geforce gtx 570 since older versions of Ubuntu where only able to boot with xforcevesa and nomodeset. Unfortunately I can't change the boot parameters. I tried the alternate version for a text based install, but it has the same problem. If I press Esc in the alternate I get a message box with two buttons but no text. I would be happy for any advice on this matter

  Hi, I created a kickstart file ks.cfg and then I have put that in the bootable disk*(Ubuntu 10.04)* and then added the following line to the isolinux.cfg linux ks=ks.cfg and have not removed any other lines from the isoconfig.cfg file and then while installing the installation is not automated, again it is asking for language and all. If i removed include menu.cfg or any other line from isolinux.cfg i am getting a boot error. • Ubuntu Server 12.10 No GUI Headless Boot and/or Reboot

  I have a headless server running the latest Ubuntu Server 12.10. It does not have any GUI at all. I am having the same issue that others are having which is that when you boot or reboot without a monitor (headless) the computer does not boot. The solution presented to others was to edit their xorg.conf file. But since I do not want a GUI installed (and therefore chose not to install a GUI after installing Ubuntu 12.10) I do not have a xorg.conf file in the /etc/X11/ directory. Ubuntu is a widely used distro of Linux, especially for server applications, I absolutely love it. Therefore, there has to be someone who solved this already?

• Can't log in on boot up

  I set this computer up with Ubuntu for my neighbor about two years ago. Today she tried her normal boot up and log in and her password isn't accepted. I've double checked and she's using what I set her up to use, the caps lock key is okay, and I can't see any other reason for the problem. I'm not sure exactly what version of Ubuntu she has and I'm not an expert user myself. Is there a way to bypass the password screen on boot up that would let me get to Ubuntu and perhaps set her up as another user? She basically checks email and that's about it. Thanks for any assistance.

At this point it says: No such file `modules-2.6.31-20-server-amd64.tar.bz2' zip2: Compressed file ends unexpectedly You can use the `bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover data from undamaged sections of corrupted files. tar: Child returned status 2 tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors Module installation failed. • Cloning a dual boot system from HDD to SSD

  I'm planning on replacing my laptop's HDD with a 256GB SSD, but I have a dual-boot (12.04 and Windows 7) setup and I'd like to be able to directly migrate Ubuntu over without having to reinstall and lose all of my settings. GParted reports the following partition setup on my HDD. I am, of course, able to modify it if necessary. /dev/sda1 (NTFS) 66.92 out of 200.00 MB used I'm honestly not sure what this partition is for. Maybe for Windows 7 system files? I'm hesitant to mess with it. (edit; it turns out it is a partition for Windows recovery files in the event of OS corruption, so I don't want to remove it. Plus it also appears to be a major pain to remove anyways) /dev/sda2 (NTFS) 116.35 out of 339.06 GB used (boot) This partition is the C:/ drive on my Windows installation. I don't use it on my Ubuntu installation, except it is the boot partition and thus has grub on it. /dev/sda4 (extended) > /dev/sda5 (ext4) 14.49 out of 91.34 GB used > /dev/sda6 (linux-swap) 5.92 GB These are my Ubuntu partitions. /sda5 contains my documents and all of the files I use on Ubuntu, and (as far as I know) the system files for Ubuntu itself (it's the partition I created when prompted by the Live-DVD installer). /sda6 is, of course, the swap partition which I only need for hibernation (6GB of RAM). /dev/sda3 (NTFS) 9.89 out of 14.75 GB used This is an annoying partition that Lenovo created to store some drivers and files that I might need later on. For example, it allows me to use OneKeyRecovery for a quick factory recovery if absolutely necessary, not sure if that'll work on an SSD. It also contains not-so-important files for bloatware installation. In total, my HDD only has about 150GB of files on it so it should fit comfortably on the SSD. The problem is, I want to exactly migrate my files, partitions, OSes, MBR, etc. from my HDD to my SSD and I'm not quite sure how to do this. I've seen CloneZilla referenced before, but I'm not all too experienced and the documentation for it quite frankly seems a bit like a foreign language to me. So, put simply, is there any way I can exactly clone this HDD to an SSD without a massive headache? Also, if it matters, I'll probably be using an external hard drive case (as recommended in online tutorials) to externally attach the SSD to my laptop during the cloning process due to the lack of two hard drive slots in the machine.
