  • How would one use Cocos2d to create a game like this.

    - by John Stewart
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/angry-birds/id343200656?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D6 So I am getting started with this all game dev thing on iphone and I decided that I will start playing with Cocos2d as my starting engine. Now just so i have a goal in mind, I picked angry birds as my initial target of what sort of game play would I like to learn to build. This is not going to be a market release game. This is totally going to be learning purposes only. So to start off my question is: Would something like this be achievable using Cocos2d? How would I go about building the physics for this? How can one do a screen scroll like the way they do in cocos2d? (any example code would be great) This is just to start off. If you have any particular questions please do add to this question.

  • Programming image maps

    - by patrikas
Hello, I am looking for a javascript/jquery solution to build a map with selectable tracks. It will consist of area's map (image) with some river routes for boats that have to be selectable - route have to be made clearer on mouse hover and after user clicks on a route a popup window should emerge. Basically I am just looking for a solution for this type of 'map'. Maybe there are some jquery widgets/plugins that would ease the work ? I don't know where to start actually.. Can anybody give some pointers ? Thanks in advance, Patrick

  • Way to check files in and out with multiple developers.

    - by Roeland
I am a web developer working with 2-3 people including me. Our current setup is very simplistic. We try to let each other know when we are working on a specific file. We use FTP to edit our files. Recently we have run into the problem of 2 people accidentally editing one file, or working on a local file then uploading when another person just did the same. From what I have read I need some sort of control system. I have heard of subversion and mercurial. It seems that these systems may not be what I need though, since its just giving me different versions of the files. I don't know if it solves the issue of two people working on a file and overwriting each others work. What are your suggestions for solving my problem?

  • QuadTrees - how to update when internal items are moving

    - by egarcia
I've implemented a working QuadTree. It subdivides 2-d space in order to accomodate items, identified by their bounding box (x,y,width, height) on the smallest possible quad (up to a minimum area). My code is based on this implementation (mine is in Lua instead of C#) : http://www.codeproject.com/KB/recipes/QuadTree.aspx I've been able to successfully implement insertions and deletions successfully. I've turn now my attention to the update() function, since my items' position and dimensions change over time. My first implementation works, but it is quite naïve: function QuadTree:update(item) self:remove(item) return self.root:insert(item) end Yup, I basically remove and reinsert every item every time they move. This works, but I'd like to optimize it a bit more; after all, most of the time, moving items still remain on the same quadTree node most of the iterations. Is there any standard way to deal with this kind of update? In case it helps, my code is here: http://github.com/kikito/passion/blob/master/ai/QuadTree.lua I'm not looking for someone to implement it for me; pointers to an existing working implementation (even in other languages) would suffice.

  • What should be the considerations for choosing SQL/NoSQL?

    - by Yuval A
Target application is a medium-sized website built to support several hundred-thousand users an hour, with an option to scale above that. Data model is rather simple, and caching potential is pretty high (~10:1 ratio of read to edit actions). What should be the considerations when coming to choose between a relational, SQL-based datastore to a NoSQL option (such as HBase and Cassandra)?

  • [C#][XNA 3.1] How can I host two different XNA windows inside one Windows Form?

    - by secutos
I am making a Map Editor for a 2D tile-based game. I would like to host two XNA controls inside the Windows Form - the first to render the map; the second to render the tileset. I used the code here to make the XNA control host inside the Windows Form. This all works very well - as long as there is only one XNA control inside the Windows Form. But I need two - one for the map; the second for the tileset. How can I run two XNA controls inside the Windows Form? While googling, I came across the terms "swap chain" and "multiple viewports", but I can't understand them and would appreciate support. Just as a side note, I know the XNA control example was designed so that even if you ran 100 XNA controls, they would all share the same GraphicsDevice - essentially, all 100 XNA controls would share the same screen. I tried modifying the code to instantiate a new GraphicsDevice for each XNA control, but the rest of the code doesn't work. The code is a bit long to post, so I won't post it unless someone needs it to be able to help me. Thanks in advance.

  • A database of questions with unambiguous numeric answers.

    - by dreeves
I (and co-hackers) are building a sort of trivia game inspired by this blog post: http://messymatters.com/calibration. The idea is to give confidence intervals and learn how to be calibrated (when you're "90% sure" you should be right 90% of the time). We're thus looking for, ideally, thousands of questions with unambiguous numerical answers. Also, they shouldn't be too boring. There are a lot of random statistics out there -- eg, enclosed water area in different countries -- that would make the game mind-numbing. Things like release dates of classic movies are more interesting (to most people). Other interesting ones we've found include Olympic records, median incomes for different professions, dates of famous inventions, and celebrity ages. Scraping things like above, by the way, was my reason for asking this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2611418/scrape-html-tables So, if you know of other sources of interesting numerical facts (in a parsable form) I'm eager for pointers to them. Thanks!

  • What kind of security issues will I have if I provide my web app write access?

    - by iama
I would like to give my web application write access to a particular folder on my web server. My web app can create files on this folder and can write data to those files. However, the web app does not provide any interface to the users nor does it publicize the fact that it can create files or write to files. Am I susceptible to any security vulnerabilities? If so, what are they?

  • Programming language for web

    - by cable729
I haven't programmed in a while, and have kind of lost interest, but I want to get back, and I've enjoyed C# the most, a lot more than objective-c and visual basic. So I want to make some games that me and my friends will be able to play next school year. So basically something you can play on the web. What programming languages deploy to the web? If c# is possible, and a mac with safari/firefox would be able to use it (I can't install plugins, and I don't want to get in trouble for making myself admin again) Flash, Java, etc. If java does, I'd like that most since it's most like c#. Then what libraries/engines would I use? I want to do 2d. And then what IDE would I use? Thanks in advance!

  • Best way to write a Safari Extension

    - by username
What is the best way to write a Safari extension? I've written a couple XUL extensions for Firefox, and now I'd like to write versions of them for Safari. Is there a way that would allow you to add buttons or forms to the browser UI, since this is not possible with an Input manager or Service menu?

  • Built in Analyzer in Xcode 3.1.4

    - by Mustafa
Hi all, I wonder if the built in Analyzer in Xcode 3.1.4 makes it redundant to use LLVM/Clang Static Analyzer separately? Please refer to the original article here: Finding memory leaks with the LLVM/Clang Static Analyzer Thanks.

  • Google Maps: How does Trulia create their custom InfoWIndows?

    - by NickT
I really like how Trulia.com has created their custom Google Map InfoWindows. What I like in particular about Trulia's implementation of the InfoWindow is: Extends beyond the map border: Google Maps InfoWindows are contained within the map border whereas Trulia's seems to be able to float on-top of the map Always displays InfoWindow near map Center: Google Maps InfoWindows always display the InfoWindow above the marker whereas Trulia InfoWindows always display the InfoWindow as close the center of the map as possible. For example, if the map marker icon is on the top of the map near the border, the Trulia InfoWindow is displayed below the map marker icon InfoWindow is displayed on mouse hover (not 'click'): With the default Google Maps InfoWindow, you have to 'click' the map marker icon to display the InfoWindow whereas Trulia InfoWindows are display simply by hovering over the map marker icon. I found the PdMarker, which is a 3rd party extension for Google Map InfoWindows that accomplishes most of the above bullets but not all. 1) It does not extend beyond the map border, 2) it does not work with Google Maps API version 3 (only version 2). Anyone know how Trulia is accomplishing their InfoWindow-like implementation on Google Maps API v3?

Using the “Venkman” JavaScript debugger for Mozilla and getting the following error: XML Parsing Error: not well-formed Location: x-jsd:source?location=http%3A%2F%2F192.168.1.150%2Fscript.js&instance=337 Line Number 557, Column 50:<line><margin x='t'> - </margin><num> 554</num> ?? valid = false;</line> Functions works but I don't understand the error. • How do you energize yourself when working alone on a project?

    - by Stephane
I am working in an environment with a very small team (3 developers only) and each of us have been assigned a different project, without counting support tasks. I know this is a bad business practice and that we should all work on a single project at a time, and then move on to the next one (Already explained to the management on how much it sucks). So don't answer me that we should work all together on one project at a time. Energizing the work when in a team is mostly pair programming we did that when less project were thrown at us and that was great. What I would like to know is how you energize your work when working alone on a project. Do you follow any particular practice?

  • Link all'interno di un campo testo

    - by aleds
Grazie Alessandro DS http://alex-on-rails.blogspot.com/

  • How have popular iPhone games been ported to Android?

    - by Cirrostratus
I am not asking how could they have been, I want to know the real answer. Doodle Jump, Paper Toss and some others have versions on the iPhone and Android that are nearly exactly the same, with the iPhone version coming first. There is a small Objective-C compiler project for Android's NDK but the timing isn't right for these apps. There's also an Android port of Cocos2d but I doubt Doodle Jump used that. Titanium? Doubtful. As their respective code bases grow, I figure it'd get harder and harder to do an exact port from Objective-C to Java every release so I wonder if there is a better way. Are they sharing C++ code for example?

  • How has RIA technology evolved and what technology stack currently rules this domain?

    - by Rachel
I am new to RIA and have not been actively involved with this technology in my projects as we using server-side Java, but I want to gain some experience with RIA. My questions are: How has RIA technology evolved and in your opinion? What technology stack currently rules this domain? What are the recommended resources for learning RIA? In general what is the suggested approach for getting started on the RIA journey?
