• Unit tests for deep cloning

  Let's say I have a complex .NET class, with lots of arrays and other class object members. I need to be able to generate a deep clone of this object - so I write a Clone() method, and implement it with a simple BinaryFormatter serialize/deserialize - or perhaps I do the deep clone using some other technique which is more error prone and I'd like to make sure is tested. OK, so now (ok, I should have done it first) I'd like write tests which cover the cloning. All the members of the class are private, and my architecture is so good (!) that I haven't needed to write hundreds of public properties or other accessors. The class isn't IComparable or IEquatable, because that's not needed by the application. My unit tests are in a separate assembly to the production code. What approaches do people take to testing that the cloned object is a good copy? Do you write (or rewrite once you discover the need for the clone) all your unit tests for the class so that they can be invoked with either a 'virgin' object or with a clone of it? How would you test if part of the cloning wasn't deep enough - as this is just the kind of problem which can give hideous-to-find bugs later?

  What options are there for localizing an app on Google App Engine? How do you do it using Webapp, Django, web2py or [insert framework here]. 1. Readable URLs and entity key names Readable URLs are good for usability and search engine optimization (Stack Overflow is a good example on how to do it). On Google App Engine, key based queries are recommended for performance reasons. It follows that it is good practice to use the entity key name in the URL, so that the entity can be fetched from the datastore as quickly as possible. Translated datastore content When serving content from (or storing it to) the datastore: Is there a better way than getting the *accept_language* parameter from the HTTP request and matching this with a language property that you have set with each entity?

  I'm trying to write a test for an UrlHelper extensionmethod that is used like this: Url.Action<TestController>(x => x.TestAction()); However, I can't seem set it up correctly so that I can create a new UrlHelper and then assert that the returned url was the expected one. • Can't operator == be applied to generic types in C#?

  According to the documentation of the == operator in MSDN, For predefined value types, the equality operator (==) returns true if the values of its operands are equal, false otherwise. For reference types other than string, == returns true if its two operands refer to the same object. For the string type, == compares the values of the strings. User-defined value types can overload the == operator (see operator). So can user-defined reference types, although by default == behaves as described above for both predefined and user-defined reference types. So why does this code snippet fail to compile? void Compare<T>(T x, T y) { return x == y; } I get the error Operator '==' cannot be applied to operands of type 'T' and 'T'. I wonder why, since as far as I understand the == operator is predefined for all types? Edit: Thanks everybody. I didn't notice at first that the statement was about reference types only. I also thought that bit-by-bit comparison is provided for all value types, which I now know is not correct. But, in case I'm using a reference type, would the the == operator use the predefined reference comparison, or would it use the overloaded version of the operator if a type defined one? Edit 2: Through trial and error, we learned that the == operator will use the predefined reference comparison when using an unrestricted generic type. Actually, the compiler will use the best method it can find for the restricted type argument, but will look no further. • Templates vs. coded HTML

  I have a web-app consisting of some html forms for maintaining some tables (SQlite, with CherryPy for web-server stuff). First I did it entirely 'the Python way', and generated html strings via. code, with common headers, footers, etc. defined as functions in a separate module. I also like the idea of templates, so I tried Jinja2, which I find quite developer-friendly. In the beginning I thought templates were the way to go, but that was when pages were simple. Once .css and .js files were introduced (not necessarily in the same folder as the .html files), and an ever-increasing number of {{...}} variables and {%...%} commands were introduced, things started getting messy at design-time, even though they looked great at run-time. Things got even more difficult when I needed additional javascript in the or sections. As far as I can see, the main advantages of using templates are: Non-dynamic elements of page can easily be viewed in browser during design. Except for {} placeholders, html is kept separate from python code. If your company has a web-page designer, they can still design without knowing Python. while some disadvantages are: {{}} delimiters visible when viewed at design-time in browser Associated .css and .js files have to be in same folder to see effects in browser at design-time. Data, variables, lists, etc., must be prepared in advanced and either declared globally or passed as parameters to render() function. So - when to use 'hard-coded' HTML, and when to use templates? I am not sure of the best way to go, so I would be interested to hear other developers' views. TIA, Alan

• Reading component parameters and setting defaults

  I'm pulling my hair on this because it should be simple, but can't get it to do the right thing. What's the best practice way of doing the following I've created a custom component that extends <s:Label> so now the Label has additional properties color2 color3 value which can be called like this and are used in the skin. <s:CustomLabel text="Some text" color2="0x939202" color3="0x999999" value="4.5" /> If I don't supply these parameters, I'd like some defaults to be set. So far I've had some success, but it doesn't work 100% of the time, which leads me to think that I'm not following best practices when setting those defaults. I do it now like this: [Bindable] private var myColor2:uint = 0x000000; [Bindable] private var myColor3:uint = 0x000000; [Bindable] private var myValue:Number = 10.0; then in the init function, I do a variation of this to set the default myValue = hostComponent.value; myValue = (hostComponent.value) ? hostComponent.value : 4.5; Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, depending on the type of variable I'm trying to set. I eventually decided to read them as Strings then convert them to the desired type, but it seems that this also works half the time.

• GAE python database object design for simple list of values

  I'm really new to database object design so please forgive any weirdness in my question. Basically, I am use Google AppEngine (Python) and contructing an object to track user info. One of these pieces of data is 40 Achievement scores. Do I make a list of ints in the User object for this? Or do I make a separate entity with my user id, the achievement index (0-39) and the score and then do a query to grab these 40 items every time I want to get the user data in total? The latter approach seems more object oriented to me, and certainly better if I extend it to have more than just scores for these 40 achievements. However, considering that I might not extend it, should I even consider just doing a simple list of 40 ints in my user data? I would then forgo doing a query, getting the sorted list of achievements, reading the score from each one just to process a response etc. Is doing this latter approach just such a common practice and hand-waved as not even worth batting an eyelash at in terms of thinking it might be more costly or complex processing wise?

• SQL database problems with addressbook table design

  Hello! I am writing a addressbook module for my software right now. I have the database set up so far that it supports a very flexible address-book configuration. I can create n-entries for every type I want. Type means here data like 'email', 'address', 'telephone' etc. I have a table named 'contact_profiles'. This only has two columns: id Primary key date_created DATETIME And then there is a table called contact_attributes. This one is a little more complex: id PK #profile (Foreign key to contact_profiles.id) type VARCHAR describing the type of the entry (name, email, phone, fax, website, ...) I should probably change this to a SET later. value Text (containing the value for the attribute). I can now link to these profiles, for example from my user's table. But from here I run into problems. At the moment I would have to create a JOIN for each value that I want to retrieve. Is there a possibility to somehow create a View, that gives me a result with the type's as columns? So right now I would get something like #profile type value 1 email [email protected] 1 name Sebastian Hoitz 1 website domain.tld But it would be nice to get a result like this: #profile email name website 1 [email protected] Sebastian Hoitz domain.tld The reason I do not want to create the table layout like this initially is, that there might always be things to add and I want to be able to have multiple attributes of the same type. So do you know if there is any possibility to convert this dynamically? If you need a better description please let me know. Thank you!

• Should programmers do Pro Bono work? where are the code public defenders?

  How many projects are people doing based on the Bro Bono publico ideals versus working for the highest wage or potential for a cash-in-buy-out payday? For years lawyers have been called out for excessive gathering of wealth from high bill rates and huge settlement deals, hiring out their knowledge and skills to the highest bidders. People call for them to do more for free, use the laws and their time to defend or further some cause thats in the public's best interest. Is professional software development that different? So many bright people and so much knowledge of complex systems. Do you think that there is enough of a "Pro Bono" movement to solve the social and public problems in the industry right now? If so what are the examples to point to? OLPC? NOTE: Saying that open source software is the same as pro bono misses the point completely. I was looking for specific projects with a social context, not just group-sourcing for free software. Just because your not making anyone pay for your software does not mean its doing anyone any good. I'm not calling out manual enforcement of pro bono work for programmers, really just want some objective opinions and concrete examples of social-minded software/tech development projects like the One Laptop Per Child project. I'm sure open source would be a natural tie-in for some.

• Writing Russian in XML

  Hi, I am writing a Xml Tag Renamer class with Java which reads in a XML, renames the tags and write them back into another XML file using DocumentBuilderFactory and TransformerFactory (text nodes are preserved). It worked fine before with German and English texts, until today, when I tried to rename a XML file with russian text. Instead of the source texts I got ????? in the newly created XML file. I've tried setting Encoding Any idea how to correct this? Thanks! PS. Strings were correct before entering TransformerFactory, as I checked in the debugger. I've tried setting OutputKeys.ENCODING to UTF-8 and ISO-8859-5. None of them helped. • Access SSAS cube from across domains without direct database connection

  Hello, I'm working with SQL Server Analysis Services for the first time and have the dilemma of working on a project in which users must be able to access SSAS Cubes (via a custom web dashboard) that live across different servers and domains, but without having access to the other server's SSAS database connection strings. So Organization A and Organization B will have their own cubes on their own servers, but Organization A users must be able to view Organization B's cubes, and Organization B users must be able to view Organization A's cubes, but neither organization should have access to the connection string. I've read about allowing HTTP access to the SSAS server and cube from the link below, but that requires setting up users for authentication or allowing anonymous access to one organization's server for users of another organization, and I'm not sure this would be acceptable for this situation, or if this is the preferred way to do this. Is performance acceptable here? http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc917711.aspx I also wonder if perhaps it makes sense to run a nightly/weekly process that accesses the other organization's SSAS database via a web service or something, and pull that data into a database on the organization's server, and then rebuild the cube. Then that cube would be queried without having to go and connect to the other organization server when viewing the cube. Has anyone else attempted to accomplish something similar? Is HTTP access the standard way to go for this? Or any other possible options? Thanks, and please let me know if you need more info, still unclear on how some of this works.

  Hi. I use the following function to rename thumbnails. For example, if I upload a file called "image.png" to an upload folder, and this folder already has a file named "image.png" in it, the new file automatically gets renamed to "image-copy-1.png". If there also is a file called "image-copy-1.png" it gets renamed to "image-copy-2.png" and so on. The following function returns the new filename. At least that's what it is supposed to do... The renaming doesn't seeem to work correctly, though. Sometimes it produces strange results, like: 1.png 1-copy-1.png 1-copy-2.png 1-copy-2-copy-1.png 1-copy-2-copy-3.png I hope you understand my problem, despite my description being somewhat complex... Can you tell me what went wrong here? • Program Structure Design Tools? (Top Down Design)

  I have been looking to expand my methodologies to better involve Unit testing, and i stumbled upon Behavioral Driven Design (Namely Cucumber, and a few others). I am quite intrigued by the concept as i have never been able to properly design top down, only because keeping track of the design gets lost without a decent way to record it. So on that note, in a mostly language agnostic way, are there any useful tools out there i am (probably) unaware of? Eg, i have often been tempted to try building flow charts for my programs, but i am not sure how much that will help, and it seems a bit confusing to me how i could make a complex enough flow chart to handle the logic of a full program, and all its features.. ie, it just seems like flow charts would be limiting in the design scheme.. or possibly grow to an unmaintainable scale. BDD methods are nice, but with a system that is so tied to structure, tying into the language and unit testing seems like a must (for it to be worth it) and it seems to be hard to find something to work well with both Python and Java (my two main languages). So anyway.. on that note, any comments are much appreciated. I have searched around on here and it seems like top down design is a well discussed topic, but i haven't seen too much reference to tools themselves, eg, flow chart programs, etc. I am on Linux, if it matters (in the case of programs).

• PHP mysqli Insert not working, but not giving any errors.

  As the title says Im trying to do a simple insert, but nothing actually is inserted into the table. I try to print out errors, but nothing is reported. I know for sure that the types are correct (strings and integers). Is there something really wrong here or does it have something to do with the fact that I'm ignoring other columns. I have about 8 columns in the user table.

  Hello, I'm writing this application that will allow a user to define custom quizzes and then allow another user to respond to the questions. Each question of the quiz has a corresponding datatype. All the responses to all the questions are stored vertically in my [Response] table. I currently use 2 fields to store the response. //Response schema ResponseID int QuizPersonID int QuestionID int ChoiceID int //maps to Choice table, used for drop down lists ChoiceValue varbinary(MAX) //used to store a user entered value I'm using .net 3.5 C# SQL Server 2008. I'm thinking that I would want to store different datatypes in the same field and then in my SQL report proc I would CONVERT to the proper datatype. I'm thinking this is ideal because I only have to check one field. I'm also thinking it might be more trouble than it is worth. I think my other options are to; store the data as strings in the db (yuck), or to have a column for each datatype I might use. So what I would like to know is, how would I format my datatypes in C# so that they can be converted properly in SQL? What is the performance hit for converting in SQL? Should I just make a whole wack of columns for each datatype?

• Make WebStart Java desktop application to start on system startup on Windows and Mac

  I developed small cross-platform (Windows and Mac) SWT desktop application. It is distributed with WebStart. So far so good, everything works. I've got a new requirement to make my app start on system startup (with no user interaction). What is the best way to accomplish that? In JNLP file I've got this: <shortcut online="false"> <desktop/> <menu submenu="CompanyName"/> </shortcut> On Windows WebStart creates a desktop link [app_name].lnk and it points to javaws.exe and then some Java cache file as a parameter with funny name like ..\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\4\2c0a6a781-213476. I can possibly programmatically find that link on user's machine by name... erm... and then copy it into user's Startup folder. I can see a problem here though as user can disable WebStart desktop shortcut creation option all together. On Mac WebStart pops up a dialog to prompt user for the location where to create an [app_name].app (user is allowed to change link name there!) file that launches an application. On Mac I don't event know where the Startup folder is located (and it seems to be much more complex there). Is there Java library out there that abstracts start app on system startup concept on different platforms as SWT does for GUI abstraction?

My need is that given a member variable, I need to know all possible enumeration values. Basically I need a function which takes an instance of one of these enums and returns a list of strings which are all the possible values. When I have an instance, running: print type(foo.enumInstance) I get: <class 'suds.sax.text.Text'> I'm not sure how to get the actual simpleType name from this, and then get the possible values from that short of parsing the WSDL myself.

  I'm reading a binary file like this: InputStream in = new FileInputStream( file ); byte[] buffer = new byte[1024]; while( ( in.read(buffer ) > -1 ) { int a = // ??? } What I want to do it to read up to 4 bytes and create a int value from those but, I don't know how to do it. I kind of feel like I have to grab 4 bytes at a time, and perform one "byte" operation ( like << & FF and stuff like that ) to create the new int What's the idiom for this? EDIT Ooops this turn out to be a bit more complex ( to explain ) What I'm trying to do is, read a file ( may be ascii, binary, it doesn't matter ) and extract the integers it may have. For instance suppose the binary content ( in base 2 ) : 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000001 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000010 The integer representation should be 1 , 2 right? :- / 1 for the first 32 bits, and 2 for the remaining 32 bits. 11111111 11111111 11111111 11111111 Would be -1 and 01111111 11111111 11111111 11111111 Would be Integer.MAX_VALUE ( 2147483647 )

  I want to be able to ban users by IP. My idea is to keep a list of IP's as rows in an BannedIPs table (the IP column would be an index). To check users' IP's against the table, I will keep a session variable called $_SESSION['IP'] for each session. If on any request, $_SESSION['IP'] doesn't match $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'], I will update $_SESSION['IP'] and check the BannedIPs table to see if the IP is banned. (A flag will also be saved as a session variable specifying whether or not the user is banned) Here are the things I'm wondering: Does that sound like a good strategy with regards to speed and security (would someone be able to get around the IP ban somehow, other than changing IP's)? What's the best way to structure a mysql query that checks to see if a row exists? That is, what's the best way to query the db to see if a row with a certain IP exists (to check if it's banned)? Should I save the IP's as integers or strings? Note that... I estimate there will be between 1,000-10,000 banned IP's stored in the database. $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] is the IP from which the current request was sent.

• Why does VBA Find loop fail when called from Evaluate?

  I am having some problems running a find loop inside of a subroutine when the routine is called using the Application.Evaluate or ActiveSheet.Evaluate method. For example, in the code below, I define a subroutine FindSub() which searches the sheet for a string "xxx". The routine CallSub() calls the FindSub() routine using both a standard Call statement and Evaluate. When I run Call FindSub, everything will work as expected: each matching address gets printed out to the immediate window and we get a final message "Finished up" when the code is done. However, when I do Application.Evaluate "FindSub()", only the address of the first match gets printed out, and we never reach the "Finished up" message. In other words, an error is encountered after the Cells.FindNext line as the loop tries to evaluate whether it should continue, and program execution stops without any runtime error being printed. I would expect both Call FindSub and Application.Evaluate "FindSub()" to yield the same results in this case. Can someone explain why they do not, and if possible, a way to fix this? Thanks. Note: In this example I obviously do not need to use Evaluate. This version is simplified to just focus on the particular problem I am having in a more complex situation. • Audio stream mangement in Linux

  I have a very complicated audio setup for a project. Here's what we have: 3 applications playing sound 2 applications recording sound 2 sound cards I really don't really have the code to any of these applications. All I want to do is monitor and control the audio streams. Here are a few examples of operations I'd like to do while the applications are running: Mute one of the incoming audio streams. Have one of the incoming audio streams do a "solo" (be the only stream that can "talk"). Get a graph (about 30 seconds worth) of the audio that each stream produced. Send one of the audio streams to soundcard #1, but all three audio streams to soundcard #2. I would likely switch audio streams every 2 minutes or so with one of the operations listed above. A GUI would be preferred. I started looking at the sound systems in Linux and it gets extremely complex and I feel like there have been many new advances in the past few years. I see jack, pulseaudio, artsd, and several other packages. They all have some promise but where should I start? Is there something someone already built that can help?

• How can I filter a JTable?

  I would like to filter a JTable, but I don't understand how I can do it. I have read How to Use Tables - Sorting and Filtering and I have tried with the code below, but with that filter, no rows at all is shown in my table. And I don't understand what column it is filtered on. private void myFilter() { RowFilter<MyModel, Object> rf = null; try { rf = RowFilter.regexFilter(filterFld.getText(), 0); } catch (java.util.regex.PatternSyntaxException e) { return; } sorter.setRowFilter(rf); } MyModel has three columns, the first two are strings and the last column is of type Integer. How can I apply the filter above, consider the text in filterFld.getText() and only filter the rows where the text is matched on the second column? I would like to show all rows that starts with the text specified by filterFld.getText(). I.e. if the text is APP then the JTable should contain the rows where the second column starts with APPLE, APPLICATION but not the rows where the second column is CAR, ORANGE. I have also tried with this filter: RowFilter<MyModel, Integer> itemFilter = new RowFilter<MyModel, Integer>(){ public boolean include(Entry<? extends MyModel, ? extends Integer> entry){ MyModel model = entry.getModel(); MyItem item = model.getRecord(entry.getIdentifier()); if (item.getSecondColumn().startsWith("APP")) { return true; } else { return false; } } }; How can I write a filter that is filtering the JTable on the second column, specified by my textfield?

• Perl program - Dynamic Bootstrapping code
