  Kerry Wilson is a Software Engineer at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He served in a consultant role to design a lightweight systems integration solution for the next generation Foundations Recovery Network using GlassFish, Java EE 6, JPA, @Scheduled EJBs, CDI, JAX-RS and JSF. He shared his story at the JavaOne 2013 Sunday GlassFish community event - check out the video below: Kerry outlined some of the details of the implementation and emphasized the fact that Java EE can be a great solution for applications that are considered small/lightweight. • What does this WCF error mean: "Custom tool warning: Cannot import wsdl:portType"

  I created a WCF service library project in my solution, and have service references to this. I use the services from a class library, so I have references from my WPF application project in addition to the class library. Services are set up straight forward - only changed to get async service functions. Everything was working fine - until I wanted to update my service references. It failed, so I eventually rolled back and retried, but it failed even then! So - updating the service references fails without doing any changes to it. Why?! The error I get is this one: Custom tool error: Failed to generate code for the service reference 'MyServiceReference'. Please check other error and warning messages for details. The warning gives more information: Custom tool warning: Cannot import wsdl:portType Detail: An exception was thrown while running a WSDL import extension: System.ServiceModel.Description.DataContractSerializerMessageContractImporter Error: List of referenced types contains more than one type with data contract name 'Patient' in namespace 'http://schemas.datacontract.org/2004/07/MyApp.Model'. Need to exclude all but one of the following types. Only matching types can be valid references: "MyApp.Dashboard.MyServiceReference.Patient, Medski.Dashboard, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null" (matching) "MyApp.Model.Patient, MyApp.Model, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null" (matching) XPath to Error Source: //wsdl:definitions[@targetNamespace='http://tempuri.org/']/wsdl:portType[@name='ISomeService'] There are two similar warnings too saying: Custom tool warning: Cannot import wsdl:binding Detail: There was an error importing a wsdl:portType that the wsdl:binding is dependent on. XPath to wsdl:portType: //wsdl:definitions[@targetNamespace='http://tempuri.org/']/wsdl:portType[@name='ISomeService'] XPath to Error Source: //wsdl:definitions[@targetNamespace='http://tempuri.org/']/wsdl:binding[@name='WSHttpBinding_ISomeService'] And the same for: Custom tool warning: Cannot import wsdl:port .. I find this all confusing.. I don't have a Patient class on the client side Dashboard except the one I got through the service reference. So what does it mean? And why does it suddenly show? Remember: I didn't even change anything! Now, the solution to this was found here, but without an explanation to what this means. So; in the "Configure service reference" for the service I uncheck the "Reuse types in the referenced assemblies" checkbox. Rebuilding now it all works fine without problems. But what did I really change? Will this make an impact on my application? And when should one uncheck this? I do want to reuse the types I've set up DataContract on, but no more. Will I still get access to those without this checked?

• Blogger sub-directory

  There has long been a debate on the internet about SEO in relation to using either sub-domains or sub-directories for blogs. I am not terribly interested in that debate. I merely want to redirect my blogger blog to my domain, the easiest way possible, and in a manner least likely to impair the current functionality of my server/websites. I believe that the simplest way in which to do this is to use a subdirectory for the blog (although I am slightly concerned that the CNAME record will be shared by both) My question is this: how to use custom domain sub-directories when blogger refuse their use; complaining that the "URL must not end with a path" when a user attempts to establish such a custom domain? Google searches on this matter are oddly useless, as most results return Blogger's forum entries that always seem to direct to Blogger's Help home page o.O (using the search facilities of Blogger's Help directory itself fails to unearth these forum posts). Any pointers (no pun intended) would be greatly appreciated.

• Xcode custom project template creates only references to files

  Hi, I tried to create a custom project template for setting up unit testing. The problem is that when i create a new project based on this template it creates references to the template files : When i edit a file, it changes my template files instead of my actual project files ! When i delete my template, files from my actual project becomes red ! The project template is in : /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/Library/Xcode/Project Templates/Application/Test-based Application Reading some question on stack overflow i tried to install my template project in /Library/Application Support/Developer/Shared/Xcode/Project Templates But i cannot see my template when i create a new project. • Messaging technologies between applications ?

  Recently, I had to create a program to send messages between two winforms executable. I used a tool with simple built-in functionalities to prevent having to figure out all the ins and outs of this vast quantity of protocols that exist. But now, I'm ready to learn more about the internals difference between each of theses protocols. I googled a couple of them but it would be greatly appreciate to have a good reference book that gives me a clean idea of how each protocol works and what are the pros and cons in a couple of context. Here is a list of nice protocols that I found: Shared memory TCP List item Named Pipe File Mapping Mailslots MSMQ (Microsoft Queue Solution) WCF I know that all of these protocols are not specific to a language, it would be nice if example could be in .net. • XCode toolchain error: dyld: Symbol not found: _objc_collect_if_needed

  I have been seeing the following error message a lot whenever I build something using the simulator: dyld: Symbol not found: _objc_collect_if_needed Referenced from: /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneSimulator3.1.sdk/System/Library/Frameworks/Foundation.framework/Foundation Expected in: /usr/lib/libobjc.A.dylib in /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneSimulator3.1.sdk/System/Library/Frameworks/Foundation.framework/Foundation I am running XCode 3.2.2 on OS X 10.6.3, and have reinstalled the SDK twice with no avail. This error makes running any code on the simulator something of a Russian Roulette, but with 5 out of 6 chambers loaded. I have checked the files mentioned in the error message, and they all checkout as being present. This sometimes go away if I restart XCode. Other times I have to logout, or even restart. And sometimes nothing works. I have googled this, even tried apple's developer forums. Other than a reference to this in the MonoTouch list, this bug appears to be completely unknown otherwise. Anything help would be greatly appreciated - this is a real PITA. Cheers, Steve

  Database .NET is an awesome tool that allow us manage several database in simultaneous (SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, etc). What lead me to install this tool was an problem that must be shared by must developers. Tools like SQL Server Management Studio consume to many resources, and if you don't have a decent computer you'll get problems in performance, and that's my case! With Database .NET we can access an SQL Server for example, and make several actions to database (crud operations, manage procedures, etc).Of course that this tool can replace the use of SQL Server Management Studio for example!  But it's really usefull if  you just need to perform small operations because it consumes many fewer resources. This tool don't need to be installed (it can be used as an portable application). One tip: if you are using SQL Server Express for example, don't forget to check the server name in Database .NET connection. • Should I reorder partitions regarding performance

  I have in principal 3 big partitions on my Netbook. One Windows, one for shared files, one for Ubuntu. I recently find out (using hdparm) the the hardisk seems to have much better perfomance on the first 2/3 (~ 60MB/s) than on the last 1/3 (~ 40MB/s). I am thinking to delete the second partition and create new partitions for "swap" and / directly after Windows. Does this effort make sense? I also wanna upgrade to 10.4/10.10 but keep the option to go back to the old system, so maybe I install ubuntu completely in a/this new partition?

My question really is: Is it appropriate to create a string padded to a length (ideally to pre-allocate the internal buffer), and then to modify the String using GCHandle::Alloc and the mess above. • How do I open up firewall while keeping it safe?

  Since I've installed Firestarter I have encountered connectivity issues that are all resolved by disabling the firewall. I'd prefer to have the firewall running and allow all the traffic I normally use: Wired network + wireless network, whichever I'm connected to, or both (1) OpenVPN VirtualBox internal network Samba (for accessing shared Windows folders and sharing folders to Windows) (2) BitTorrent And everything else I use that I can't think of :) All the above works without a firewall. I thought Linux was super secure (I update regularly). Do I really need it? (1) I used the Firestarter wizard and selected wlan0 as my primary connection, now whenever I plug in a network cable, I lose all connectivity. Should I just redo the wizard for eth0, or will I then lose wlan0? (2) If it makes a difference I'm sharing a directory that I share between local users using bindfs. • saving the videos and photos in iPhone Simultor 4.0

  Hi All, From 4.0 apple has extended their api support to access the videos and photos from the phone. I am using only iPhone 4.0 simulator to test my application. When I try to save the video as apple has mentioned in their api docs, its giving the error something like "Error Saving the Asset". The way I try to store the video is as follows : ALAssetsLibraryWriteVideoCompletionBlock _videoCompblock = ^(NSURL *assetURL, NSError *error){ if(assetURL) { NSLog(@"Video AssetUrl : %@", [assetURL absoluteString]); } else if(error) { NSLog(@"The Error occured : %@", [error localizedDescription]); } }; BOOL isSupported = [library deoAtPathIsCompatibleWithSavedPhotosAlbum:videoFileUrl]; if(isSupported) { [library writeVideoAtPathToSavedPhotosAlbum:videoFileUrl completionBlock:_videoCompblock]; } The above methods should print the url of the video on successful saving of the video file. • ctypes and pointer manipulation

  I am dealing with image buffers, and I want to be able to access data a few lines into my image for analysis with a c library. I have created my 8-bit pixel buffer in Python using create_string_buffer. Is there a way to get a pointer to a location within that buffer without re-creating a new buffer? My goal is to analyze and change data within that buffer in chunks, without having to do a lot of buffer creation and data copying. In this case, ultimately, the C library is doing all the manipulation of the buffer, so I don't actually have to change values within the buffer using Python. I just need to give my C function access to data within the buffer.

  Hi there! I'm trying to add some MarkDown capabilities to my symfony project (symfony version 1.3.3). To accomplish that, I had already included the MarkDown library into lib/vendor directory. Also, I added the need configuration in the autoload.yml for the previous library. However, I'm getting a fatal PHP error: Call to undefined function Markdown(). How can I resolve this problem? • Vertex Normals, Loading Mesh Data

  My test FBX mesh is a cube. From what I surmise, it seems that the cube is on the extreme end of this issue, but I believe that the same issue would be able to occur in any mesh: Each vertex has 3 normals, each pointing a different direction. Of course loading in any type of mesh, potentially ones having thousands of vertices, I need to use indices and not duplicate shared verts. Currently, I'm just writing the normals to the vertex at the index that the FBX data tells me they go to, which has the effect of overwriting any previous normal data. But for lighting calculations I need more info, something that's equivalent to a normal per face, but I have no idea how this should be done. Do I average the 3 different verts' normals together or what?

  Hi, I'm using access 2007 and i am trying to set up a database to act as a library system, i need a function that automatically calculates a date 14 days after a given date i.e. Loan Date vs. Due Date. But the library is open only on certain Days. So i need the 14 days not to include the dates that are out of hours, like weekends and school holidays etc. I think i need to use Select Case or IIF's?   I'm just in the process of moving from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2010. One of my projects use the Microsoft Fax Service Extended COM Type Library. After converting the project to VS 2010 I get the following compiler error: C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Microsoft.Common.Targets(1558,9): error MSB3648: The Keycontainer-path "VS_KEY_812A0248FF872DEC" ist invalid. I tried to remove FAXCOMEXLib from the project and adding it again, but it did not help. I got a similar problem with other COM references. How do I resolve this?

• Database independent row level security solution

  Hi, does anybody knows about Java/C# database independent authorization library. This library should support read, write, delete, insert actions across company organizational structure. Something like this: - user can see all documents - user can enter new document assigned to his unit - user can change all documents assigned to his unit and all subordinate units. - user can delete documents that are assigned to him I should also be able to create custom actions (besides read, write,...) connect them to certain class and assign that "security token" to user (e.g. document.expire). If there aren't any either free or commercial libraries, is there a book that could be useful in implementing this functionality? Thanks.

• Rail test case fixtures not loading

  Rails appears to not be loading any fixtures for unit or functional tests. BTW, I am developing on Mac OS X 10.6 with Rail 2.3.5 and Ruby 1.8.7, no additional plugins (beyond the base install). Any pointers on how to debug, why the magic of Rails appears to be failing here? Is it a version problem? Can I trace code into the libraries and find the answer? There are so many "mixin" modules I can't find where the fixtures method really lives.
