  • Performance effect of using print statements in Python script

    I have a Python script that process a huge text file (with around 4 millon lines) and writes the data into two separate files. I have added a print statement, which outputs a string for every line for debugging. I want to know how bad it could be from the performance perspective? If it is going to very bad, I can remove the debugging line. Edit It turns out that having a print statement for every line in a file with 4 million lines is increasing the time way too much.

    Does anyone know of a C++ library that will provide a text-based interactive interface? I want to create two versions of an application; a console based program that will perform whatever actions are given on the command line or interactively at the console as well as a GUI based program (Mac Cocoa and Windows MFC). Both versions will share a common C++ backend. For the console based program I would like similar history abilities to readline (which I cannot use as this application will be closed source) with command completion (Tab-activated for example). Perhaps there is something like this already available?

I would like to extract for a specific TAG, (i.e. TAG54) its individual "substructure", which would be SET TAG54 ... ... SET Each substructure, for a given TAG_i contains always: first line:SET second line:TAG_i (in this case TAG54) an arbitrary number of lines last line:SET I wonder what would be the best way to do this, whether in bash or python, so for a given TAG, one can "extract" this substructure. Also because of different number of elements in each element of the list it is not possible to use write() or write.table().

Somebody in my lab is doing a content analysis (e.g. reading an article or transcript line by line and identifying relevant themes) of the web presences of various privatized neuroimaging centers (e.g. http://www.canmagnetic.com/). She's been c/ping entire site maps by hand, and I know I could slap something together with Python to follow links and dump full text (with line numbers) for her, but I've never actually done anything quite like this.
