  • Trouble using remote desktop when connected via Cisco VPN

    I just setup my Cisco VPN and everything appears to be working fine. I opened the 'remote desktop' application and am unable to connect to my work desktop machine. When I disable Windows Firewall, I am able to connect, but not when Firewall is enabled. Is there a specific settings inside Windows 7 Firewall that should I be enabling or disabling for this to work without having to shut down the entire system? I can post this in superuser.com instead if you feel it belongs there, but posted here due to it being related to VPN and Firewall. Thanks, Kyle

  • Windows 7 Standy/Hibernate Freeze/Lockup

    I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on a MSI U100 Netbook which often experiences a lockup or freeze whilst hibernating or shutting down. I have a friend with an Asus netbook running Windows 7 who has experienced the same issue. This happens to me perhaps 1-2 times a week, and is frustrating as hell because it will just sit there running flat out (the fan goes to max after a while) until the battery dies if I don't notice it first. Just wondering if anyone has had any similar issues or might be able to point me in the right direction. The freeze occurs when the screen has faded to black. The HDD light flickers for a few moments then just sticks on solid. I haven't been able to isolate any apps which may be causing this either. It will be fine one standby, and lock up the next with no new apps open. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Cheers, Kyle

  • Chrome browser caching

    I do a lot of development on my local machine and would like to start using Chrome, however I cannot seem to do a hard-refresh (ctrl+f5) or any other key combination to get my browser to forcibly refresh all content @ http://localhost. I change projects frequently in IIS and this presents a problem because I see stylesheet and image data from my previous project with no way to get this page to reload without forcibly dumping all cache data from the settings menu. Is there another key combination I am missing, or is there a place I can (on a site by site basis) turn off caching? I prefer not to have to clear out my temporary files in the browser settings as I switch projects frequently. Thanks, Kyle

    Hi All, We currently receive parameters of values as VARCHAR's, and then build a date from them. I am wanting to confirm that the method would stop the possibility of SQL injection from this statement: select CONVERT(datetime, '2010' + '-' + '02' + '-' + '21' + ' ' + '15:11:38.990') Another note is that the actual parameters being passed through to the stored proc are length bound at (4, 2, 2, 10, 12) in correspondence to the above.     Hi All, I asked another question, stating that the I am unable to use WCF in a new Web Service project and have come to see that it seems to be the technology to use in regards to extensibility and security. My question is a simple one: How can I persuade management (and developers for that matter) to move over to using WCF as opposed to other web service technologies (ASMX/CFC)?   • No Outbound Internet on Windows Home Server

    Could someone provide some steps for me to check my internet connection on my Windows Home Server? It seems to have intermittent connectivity issues and I am unsure of how to diagnose the problem because it is a headless (no monitor, no keyboard) machine so the only way to get to the device is via remote desktop (which works fine). When connected to the machine, it doesn't pull up any microsoft.com sites and some other sites it does pull up (i.e. gmail.com) and some it doesn't (stackoverflow.com). To make matters more complicated, it has worked intermittently in the past for reasons unknown. Are there tools I can use to properly diagnose the reason for the connection failure? I can ping 127.0.0.1 just fine, I have internet working on my other router-connected machines, so I'm not sure why this one would fail. Any suggestions would be much appreciated and up-voted :) ** edit - thanks for suggestions guys, I'm going to try these tonight and will update my post. ** edit #2 - I hoping this is a more permanant fix, but I have both changed my port on the router as well as restarted the router at the same time. The internet (for the moment) appears to be working. I will be sure to try everything we have discussed should this problem persist. Thanks, Kyle

To be clear, this is a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 installation running on Windows Server 2003 Standard. It is not an option to upgrade the server or SharePoint version. Management would like to create several new sites, one for each of a handful of clients. These sites will be used like "dropboxes" or FTP sites so that my company can make large files available to outside contacts, and vice versa. Here are my requirements: I do not want to have to create Active Directory accounts for each external contact. If possible, I would like to store the external usernames and passwords in a database that I can write a small GUI for so that management can handle adding their own external contacts. Each client site must be sandboxed from each other and from my main company SharePoint site. I would like to keep everything running on port 80 and be able to access the sites as either clientname.mycompany.com or www.mycompany.com/clientname If anybody has ever done this I would really appreciate hearing about any lessons you learned and suggestions for how to set this up.   • Refresh conent with JQuery/AJAX after using a MVC partial view

    Using the following JQuery/AJAX function I'm calling a partial view when an option is changed in a combobox named "ReportedIssue" that is also in the partial view. The is named "tableContent". <script type="text/javascript"> $(function() { $('#ReportedIssue') .change(function() { var styleValue = $(this).val(); $('#tableContent').load( '/CurReport/TableResults', { style: styleValue } ); }) .change(); }); </script> My problem is that after the jump to the partial view I lose the link to the javascript. I think I'm supposed to use the JQuery ".live()" but I'm unsure. In short, I want to re-establish the link between my JavaScript and my combobox and after the inclusion of the partial view's HTML.   • windbg/cdb hangs when bp hit

    I have a problem where cdb or windbg hangs frequently, but not all the time, when I'm debugging with it and I attach to a specific application on my machine. I found this article: http://www.nynaeve.net/?p=164 which talks about a symbol loading race condition being the problem, but I can force load the symbols, actually have a breakpoint in-app work, and still have it hang elsewhere. Here is the stack from cdb itself when I attach to it with another debugger: ntdll!NtReadFile kernel32!ReadFile cdb!ReadNonConLine cdb!ConIn cdb!MainLoop cdb!main !analyze reports that APPLICATION_HANG_BusyHang is the problem bucket, and 'ReadNonConLine' is the offending function. as far as the stack goes: ffffffff`fffffffe 00000000`00000000 00000001`3f641498 00000000`0014ea50 : kernel32!ReadFile+0x86 00000000`000002a4 00000000`0014ebb0 00000000`00001000 00000000`00000000 : cdb!ReadNonConLine+0x6d ReadNonConLine has the string "g" at 0014ebb0 passed as a param, which may be part of the command I had at the hanging breakpoint (it was something like bp foo "dt a; g") ReadFile takes a handle as its first parameter. I'm surprised by the value -2, though, that doesn't look valid. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! Aaron
