• HTML Button's jQuery function is having trouble with MVC FileResult

• Setting image DPI in relation to height/width C#

  Hi, I'm writing an application to send some images to a third party, and the images must be 200x200 DPI. The image is a Bitmap and is sized at 500 width and 250 height. The first time I tested the images with the third party, my resolution was incorrect. I merely used image.SetResolution(200,200) to correctly set it to 200x200. This, however, only changed the resolution tag for the image and did not properly, according to my third party technical contact, adjust the image height and width. Is there a ratio that I can use so that for each X units I increment the resolution, I merely increment the corresponding height or width Y units? I thought that I could just increment resolution without having to increment height or width. Thank you, Aaron.

• ldapsearch and vcard creation

  I'm using openldap on Mac OS X Server 10.6 and need to generate a vcard for all the users in a given group. By using the ldapsearch I can list all the memberUid's for all users in that group. I found a perl script (Advanced LDAP Search or ALS) that was written by someone that will generate the vcard easily. ALS can be found here http://www.ldapman.org/tools/als.gz So what I need to do is create a wrapper script (in python or perl) that will effectively loop through the memberUid's and run the ALS command to create the vcard and append it to the file. This command provides the memberUid's: ldapsearch -x -b 'dc=ldap,dc=server,dc=com' '(cn=testgroup)' Then running ALS gives the vcard: als -b dc=ldap,dc=server,dc=com -V uid=aaronh > vcardlist.vcf If it's easier to do this using Perl since ALS is already using it that would be fine. • Issue with mysql backup in cron

  I'm just trying to perform a mysqldump and have it scheduled. I'm using RHEL 5 and have added it to the crontab as shown below: 22 13 * * * root mysqldump --user=root --password=12345 mysqldb /var/backups/mysqldbdate +%d%m.sql The .sql file never ended up in the backups folder. I even attempted to run this command line and it worked fine which tells me its something to do with the cron. Furthermore, I added a simple comand like "ls" and the output to the same directory and it worked fine. Any ideas? Thanks, Aaron

• Find&Replace using Python - Binary file

  Hello, I'm attempting to do a "find and replace" in a file on a Mac OS X computer. Although it appears to work correctly. It seems that the file is somehow altered. The text editor that I use (Text Wrangler) is unable to even open the file once this is completed. Here is the code as I have it: import fileinput for line in fileinput.FileInput("testfile.txt",inplace=1): line = line.replace("newhost",host) print line, When I view the file from the terminal, it does say "testfile" may be a binary file. See it anyway? Is there a chance that this replace is corrupting the file? Do I have another option for this to work? I really appreciate the help. • After .load() Reset Textbox with User Entered Value using JavaScript and jQuery

  My function below calls a partial view after a user enters a filter-by string into the text box '#DocId'. When the user is done typing, the partial view is displayed with filtered data. Since my textbox needs to be in the partial view, when user is done entering a filter-by string and is shown the filtered data, the textbox is reset and the user entered data is lost. How can I set the value of the textbox back to the user entered string after the partial view is displayed? • Android GPS timeout

  I'm writing an Android application that, among other things, needs to send the current GPS coordinates to a server when the user tells it to. From a context menu, I run the service below. The service is a LocationListener and requests updates from the LocationManager. When it gets a location (onLocationChanged()), it removes itself as a listener and sends the coordinates off to the server. All of this is working. However, if GPS coordinates are not quickly available, my service just keeps running until it gets some. It holds up the UI with a progress dialog, which is annoying. Worse, if the user has moved since starting the service, the first GPS coordinates might be wrong and the app will send bad data to the server. I need a timeout on the service. Is there a good way to do that? I'm not very experienced with threads. I think I can run a Runnable in the onStartCommand() method that will somehow count down 30 seconds and then, if there is no GPS result yet, call my service's stop() method. Does that sound like the best way to do this? Alternatively, is it possible to tell if the GPS cannot get a fix? How would I go about doing that? • Multiple Operations with soapAction="" in a WCF Service Contract?

  I need to create a service that will be "called back" by a third party. As a result, I need to conform to their WSDL. Their WSDL has all of the operations defined with soapAction="", so my service needs to do the same. Unfortunately, I'm getting the error: The operations A and B have the same action (). Every operation must have a unique action value. In ASMX web services, there was a mode where the soapAction would not be used, but the name of the request element would be used instead. Is there some way using WCF not only to dispatch on the request element, but also to emit a WSDL with no soapAction?

• Rotating an Image in Silverlight without cropping

  I am currently working on a simple Silverlight app that will allow people to upload an image, crop, resize and rotate it and then load it via a webservice to a CMS. Cropping and resizing is done, however rotation is causing some problems. The image gets cropped and is off centre after the rotation. • How to have Android Service communicate with Activity

  I'm writing my first Android application and trying to get my head around communication between services and activities. I have a Service that will run in the background and do some gps and time based logging. I will have an Activity that will be used to start and stop the Service. So first, I need to be able to figure out if the Service is running when the Activity is started. There are some other questions here about that, so I think I can figure that out (but feel free to offer advice). My real problem: if the Activity is running and the Service is started, I need a way for the Service to send messages to the Activity. Simple Strings and integers at this point - status messages mostly. The messages will not happen regularly, so I don't think polling the service is a good way to go if there is another way. I only want this communication when the Activity has been started by the user - I don't want to start the Activity from the Service. In other words, if you start the Activity and the Service is running, you will see some status messages in the Activity UI when something interesting happens. If you don't start the Activity, you will not see these messages (they're not that interesting). It seems like I should be able to determine if the Service is running, and if so, add the Activity as a listener. Then remove the Activity as a listener when the Activity pauses or stops. Is that actually possible? The only way I can figure out to do it is to have the Activity implement Parcelable and build an AIDL file so I can pass it through the Service's remote interface. That seems like overkill though, and I have no idea how the Activity should implement writeToParcel() / readFromParcel(). Is there an easier or better way? Thanks for any help.

• What is a NullReferenceException in .NET?

  (I'm creating this separate question and answer because every question we get on NullReferenceException is really the same) I have some code and when it executes, it throws a NullReferenceException, saying, "Object reference not set to an instance of an object.". What does this mean, and what can I do about it? Note again, that this is a question meant to focus answers to the canonical "what is a NullReferenceException and why did I get one" question. I do know what a NullReferenceException is, as my answer below demonstrates.

• Tool for braceless, whitespace sensitive C syntax

  I'm writing some C at the moment and because I like whitespace sensitive syntax, I'd like to write it like this: #include <stdio.h> int main(void) printf("Hello, world!") return 0 Instead of this: #include <stdio.h> int main(void) { printf("Hello, world!"); return 0; } Does anybody know of a tool that will convert the former into the latter? Edit: I've really no interest in arguing with those that think this is a bad idea. By all means continue to think that, you have your reasons. But at least know this: I'm aware Python is a whitespace sensitive language but I have not used it. Why would I? I know Ruby already. Also know: I am not just learning C for the first time and I have used PHP and JavaScript for more than four years, so I am not requesting this out of some personal difficulty, lack of familiarity with block syntax, or dogmatic affiliation. I am also aware of what would be involved in writing one of these and that's not beyond my ability but I don't want this enough to justify spending the time writing one.

• Managing aesthetic code changes in git

  I find that I make a lot of small changes to my source code, often things that have almost no functional effect. For example: Refining or correcting comments. Moving function definitions within a class for a more natural reading order. Spacing and lining up some declarations for readability. Collapsing something using multiple lines on to one. Removing an old piece of commented-out code. Correcting some inconsistent whitespace. I guess I have a formidable attention to detail in my code. But the problem is I don't know what to do about these changes and they make it difficult to switch between branches etc. in git. I find myself not knowing whether to commit the minor changes, stash them, or put them in a separate branch of little tweaks and merge that in later. None those options seems ideal. The main problem is that these sort of changes are unpredictable. If I was to commit these there would be so many commits with the message "Minor code aesthetic change.", because, the second I make such a commit I notice another similar issue. What should I do when I make a minor change, a significant change, and then another minor change? I'd like to merge the three minor changes into one commit. It's also annoying seeing files as modified in git status when the change barely warrants my attention. I know about git commit --amend but I also know that's bad practice as it makes my repo inconsistent with remotes.

• What is a Custom Class?

  Many questions here on SO ask about custom classes. I, on the other hand, have no idea what they're talking about. "Custom class" seems to mean the same thing I mean when I say "class". What did I miss, back in the '80s, that keeps me from understanding? I know that it's possible to purchase a packaged system - for Accounting, ERP, or something like that. You can then customize it, or add "custom code" to make the package do things that are specific to your business. But that doesn't describe the process used in writing a .NET program. In this case, the entire purpose of the .NET Framework is to allow us to write our own code. There is nothing useful out of the box.

  I'm trying to add a custom filter to my RadGrid. I have a column, vendNum, which I want to allow users to filter on multiple vendNums with a comma-separated list. Basically, I want the same functionality as an "in" statement in SQL (where vendNum in (X,Y,Z)). • UIView Animation animates position but not width

  Hi there, I'm trying to transform a UISearchBar, like in Mobile Safari: touch in the search field and it grows while the location field shrinks. My current animation to alter the width and position of the search field only animates the position: just before it slides to the right place, it simply snaps out to the right width. • Refresh table after using jQuery .append()

  The following code gets a JSON object and then spits its contents out into a <table>. The first time I do it I get my JSON content just fine. However, when I refresh, the refreshed data is stuck onto the bottom of my table. How do I refresh the data to show the new data only?
