  • Why using Fragments?

    - by ahmed_khan_89
    I have read the documentation and some other questions' threads about this topic and I don't really feel convinced; I don't see clearly the limits of use of this technique. Fragments are now seen as a Best Practice; every Activity should be basically a support for one or more Fragments and not call a layout directly. Fragments are created in order to: allow the Activity to use many fragments, to change between them, to reuse these units... == the Fragment is totally dependent to the Context of an activity , so if I need something generic that I can reuse and handle in many Activities, I can create my own custom layouts or Views ... I will not care about this additional Complexity Developing Layer that fragments would add. a better handling to different resolution == OK for tablets/phones in case of long process that we can show two (or more) fragments in the same Activity in Tablets, and one by one in phones. But why would I use fragments always ? handling callbacks to navigate between Fragments (i.e: if the user is Logged-in I show a fragment else I show another fragment). === Just try to see how many bugs facebook SDK Log-in have because of this, to understand that it is really (?) ... considering that an Android Application is based on Activities... Adding another life cycles in the Activity would be better to design an Application... I mean the modules, the scenarios, the data management and the connectivity would be better designed, in that way. === This is an answer of someone who's used to see the Android SDK and Android Framework with a Fragments vision. I don't think it's wrong, but I am not sure it will give good results... And it is really abstract... ==== Why would I complicate my life, coding more, in using them always? else, why is it a best practice if it's just a tool for some cases? what are these cases?

  • How to add a Fragment inside a ViewPager using Nested Fragment (Android 4.2)

    - by sabadow
    I have a ViewPager with three Fragments, each one shows a List (or Grid). In the new Android API level 17 (Jelly Bean 4.2), one of the features is Nested Fragments. The new functionality description says: if you use ViewPager to create fragments that swipe left and right and consume a majority of the screen space, you can now insert fragments into each fragment page. So, if I understand right, now I can create a ViewPager with Fragments (with a button inside for example) inside, and when user press the button show another Fragment without loose the ViewPager using this new feature. I expend my morning trying to implement this on several ways but I can´t made it... Can somebody show a simple example of how to do this? PS: I'm only interested in doing at this way, with getChildFragmentManager to learn how works.

  • Fragment not showing up and breaks other buttons on Layout

    - by Devin Crane
    I'm learning how to use Fragments, and trying to add a fragment tag_button.xml at runtime to a FrameLayout tagFragmentContainer deep within another layout, deepLayout.xml. I get no errors, but the fragment doesn't show up. When I make its container visible, I can see a small sliver of layout between the other elements already existing, but then it disappears after onCreateView(), and all the remaining buttons are broken, which is even more confusing to me. tag_button.xml is just a regular layout file with some text and a button. tagFragmentContainer, within a LinearLayout in the middle of a large layout file, deepLayout.xml: <LinearLayout android:id="@+id/tagButtonsLayout" android:layout_marginBottom="10dip" android:visibility="gone" style="@style/Form"> <FrameLayout android:id="@+id/tagFragmentContainer" android:layout_marginBottom="10dip" style="@style/Form"> </FrameLayout> </LinearLayout> In deepLayoutActivity, I make visible tagButtonsLayout and start TagButtonActivity: final LinearLayout anotherlm = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.id.tagButtonsLayout); anotherlm.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE); Intent i = new Intent (this, TagButtonActivity.class); startActivity(i); TagButtonActivity is as follows: public class TagButtonActivity extends FragmentActivity { @Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.action_expense); if (savedInstanceState != null) return; TagButtonFragment firstFragment = new TagButtonFragment(); getSupportFragmentManager().beginTransaction().add(R.id.tagFragmentContainer, firstFragment, "tagOne").commit(); } } TagButtonFragment: public class TagButtonFragment extends Fragment { @Override public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container, Bundle savedInstanceState) { // Inflate the layout for this fragment return inflater.inflate(R.layout.tag_button, container, false); } } tag_button.xml: <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" style="@style/Form"> <TextView android:id="@+id/tag_button_header" style="@style/FieldHeader" android:text="example text"/> <RelativeLayout android:id="@+id/tag_button_block" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_marginLeft="2dip" android:layout_marginTop="3dip" android:layout_marginBottom="3dip" android:layout_marginRight="2dip" android:layout_height="43dip" android:clickable="true" android:background="@drawable/row_spinner_selector"> <ImageView android:id="@+id/question_arrow" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_marginLeft="10dip" android:layout_marginRight="10dip" android:layout_alignParentRight="true" android:layout_centerVertical="true" android:src="@drawable/arrow_right"/> <TextView android:id="@+id/tag_question_text" android:layout_toLeftOf="@id/question_arrow" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_marginLeft="10dip" android:layout_centerVertical="true" android:textColor="@android:color/black" android:singleLine="true" android:ellipsize="end" android:textSize="15sp" android:text="@string/not_selected"/> </RelativeLayout> </LinearLayout> I would certainly appreciate any help in figuring this out from someone who knows fragments better than me! Thanks!

  • Android layout with 2 evenly spaced Buttons

    - by Rpond
    I have this layout that works correctly, a relative layout with a text view and two buttons spaced evenly below it. <RelativeLayout android:id="@+id/entrypopup" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:padding="5px" android:visibility="gone" android:layout_below="@+id/ad" android:background="#80000000"> <TextView android:id="@+id/title" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="Entry Popup..." android:textColor="#ffffffff" android:textSize="20sp" /> <TableLayout android:id="@+id/TableLayout01" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_below="@id/title"> <TableRow android:layout_weight="1"> <Button android:id="@+id/buttonVisit" android:text="View" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_width="0dip" android:layout_weight="1"/> <Button android:id="@+id/buttonCancel" android:text="Cancel" android:layout_width="0dip" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_height="fill_parent"/> </TableRow> </TableLayout> </RelativeLayout> But running layoutopt it says that "this TableRow layout or its TableLayout parent is possible useless". Is there a way to do this layout then without the tables?

  • Drawing lines between views in a TableLayout

    - by RiThBo
    Firstly - sorry if you saw my other question which I deleted. My question was flawed. Here is a better version If I have two views, how do I draw a (straight) line between them when one of them is touched? The line needs to be dynamic so it can follow the finger until it reaches the second view where it "locks on". So, when view1 is touched a straight line is drawn which then follows the finger until it reaches view2. I created a LineView class that extends view, but I don't how to proceed. I read some tutorials but none show how to do this. I think I need to get the coordinates of both view, and then create a path which "updates" on MotionEvent. I can get the coordinates and the ids of the views I want to draw a line between, but the line that I try to draw between them either goes above it, or the line does not reach past the width and height of the view. Any advice/code/clarity would be much appreciated! Here is some code: My layout. I want to draw a line between two views contained in theTableLayout.# <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/activity_game_relative_layout" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" android:orientation="vertical" > <TableLayout android:layout_marginTop="35dp" android:layout_marginBottom="35dp" android:id="@+id/tableLayout1" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_centerInParent="true" > <TableRow android:id="@+id/table_row_1" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:padding="5dip" > <com.example.view.DotView android:id="@+id/game_dot_1" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_marginBottom="10dp" android:layout_marginLeft="10dp" android:layout_marginRight="10dp" android:layout_marginTop="10dp" /> <com.example.view.DotView android:id="@+id/game_dot_2" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_marginBottom="10dp" android:layout_marginLeft="10dp" android:layout_marginRight="10dp" android:layout_marginTop="10dp" /> <com.example.view.DotView android:id="@+id/game_dot_3" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_marginBottom="10dp" android:layout_marginLeft="10dp" android:layout_marginRight="10dp" android:layout_marginTop="10dp" /> </TableRow> <TableRow android:id="@+id/table_row_2" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:padding="5dip" > <com.example.view.DotView android:id="@+id/game_dot_7" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_marginBottom="10dp" android:layout_marginLeft="10dp" android:layout_marginRight="10dp" android:layout_marginTop="10dp" /> <com.example.view.DotView android:id="@+id/game_dot_8" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_marginBottom="10dp" android:layout_marginLeft="10dp" android:layout_marginRight="10dp" android:layout_marginTop="10dp" /> <com.example.dotte.DotView android:id="@+id/game_dot_9" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_marginBottom="10dp" android:layout_marginLeft="10dp" android:layout_marginRight="10dp" android:layout_marginTop="10dp" /> </TableRow> </TableLayout> </RelativeLayout> This is my LineView class. I use this to try and draw the actual line between the points. public class LineView extends View { Paint paint = new Paint(); float startingX, startingY, endingX, endingY; public LineView(Context context) { super(context); // TODO Auto-generated constructor stub paint.setColor(Color.BLACK); paint.setStrokeWidth(10); } public void setPoints(float startX, float startY, float endX, float endY) { startingX = startX; startingY = startY; endingX = endX; endingY = endY; invalidate(); } @Override public void onDraw(Canvas canvas) { canvas.drawLine(startingX, startingY, endingX, endingY, paint); } } And this is my Activity. public class Game extends Activity { DotView dv1, dv2, dv3, dv4, dv5, dv6, dv7; @Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.activity_game); getWindow().getDecorView().setSystemUiVisibility( View.SYSTEM_UI_FLAG_LOW_PROFILE); findDotIds(); RelativeLayout rl = (RelativeLayout) findViewById(R.id.activity_game_relative_layout); LineView lv = new LineView(this); lv.setPoints(dv1.getLeft(), dv1.getTop(), dv7.getLeft(), dv7.getTop()); rl.addView(lv); // TODO: Get the coordinates of all the dots in the TableLayout. Use view tree observer. } private void findDotIds() { // TODO Auto-generated method stub dv1 = (DotView) findViewById(R.id.game_dot_1); dv2 = (DotView) findViewById(R.id.game_dot_2); dv3 = (DotView) findViewById(R.id.game_dot_3); dv4 = (DotView) findViewById(R.id.game_dot_4); dv5 = (DotView) findViewById(R.id.game_dot_5); dv6 = (DotView) findViewById(R.id.game_dot_6); dv7 = (DotView) findViewById(R.id.game_dot_7); } } The views I want to draw lines between are in the TableLayout.

  • using Unity Android In a sub view and add actionbar and style

    - by aeroxr1
    I exported a simple animation from Unity3D (version 4.5) in android project. With eclipse I modified the manifest and added another activity. In this activity I put a button that it makes start the animation,and this is the result. The action bar appear in the main activity but it doesn't in the unity's activity :( How can I add the action bar and the style of the first activity to unity's animation activity ? I am using 3 italic textviews with different colors <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:orientation="horizontal" android:id="@+id/submittedBy" android:paddingTop="10dip"> <ImageView android:id="@+id/subByImg" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:gravity="left" android:layout_gravity="bottom" android:src="@drawable/submitted_by_arrow"/> <TextView android:id="@+id/submitLabel" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:gravity="left" android:text="Submitted by" android:textStyle="italic" android:textSize="12sp" android:textColor="@color/gray" android:paddingLeft="5dip"/> <TextView android:id="@+id/submitName" android:textStyle="italic" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:textSize="12sp" android:textColor="@color/maroon_dark" android:paddingLeft="10dip"/> <TextView android:id="@+id/submitByDate" android:textStyle="italic" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:gravity="left" android:textSize="12sp" android:textColor="@color/gray" android:paddingLeft="10dip"/> </LinearLayout> I wonder every last character is not displaying properly specially name displayed in the middle is "Dan Buckland" and it it is missing last character looks like "Dan Bucklano" Also tell me pls how can have textview italic and bold both..

  • Android programming. Application stopped unexpectedly.

    I've just created a prototype of interface for my android app and tried to run it. Unfortunately I get an error that my app has stopped unexpectedly (my reputation doesn't allow me to post images so follow my links): screenshot of error message This is layout mode of editing. • Compiling OpenCV in Android NDK

    - by evident
    PLEASE SEE THE ADDITIONS AT THE BOTTOM! The first problem is solved in Linux, not under Windows and Cygwin yet, but there is a new problem. Please see below! I am currently trying to compile OpenCV for Android NDK so that I can use it in my apps. For this I tried to follow this guide: http://www.stanford.edu/~zxwang/android_opencv.html But when compiling the downloaded stuff with ndk-build I get this error: $ /cygdrive/u/flori/workspace/android-ndk-r5b/ndk-build Compile++ thumb : opencv <= cvjni.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxalloc.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxarithm.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxarray.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxcmp.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxconvert.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxcopy.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxdatastructs.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxdrawing.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxdxt.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxerror.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cximage.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxjacobieigens.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxlogic.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxlut.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxmathfuncs.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxmatmul.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxmatrix.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxmean.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxmeansdv.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxminmaxloc.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxnorm.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxouttext.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxpersistence.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxprecomp.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxrand.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxsumpixels.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxsvd.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxswitcher.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxtables.cpp Compile++ thumb : cxcore <= cxutils.cpp StaticLibrary : libstdc++.a StaticLibrary : libcxcore.a Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvaccum.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvadapthresh.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvapprox.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvcalccontrasthistogram.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvcalcimagehomography.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvcalibinit.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvcalibration.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvcamshift.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvcanny.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvcolor.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvcondens.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvcontours.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvcontourtree.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvconvhull.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvcorner.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvcornersubpix.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvderiv.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvdistransform.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvdominants.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvemd.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvfeatureselect.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvfilter.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvfloodfill.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvfundam.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvgeometry.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvhaar.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvhistogram.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvhough.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvimgwarp.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvinpaint.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvkalman.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvlinefit.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvlkpyramid.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvmatchcontours.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvmoments.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvmorph.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvmotempl.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvoptflowbm.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvoptflowhs.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvoptflowlk.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvpgh.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvposit.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvprecomp.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvpyramids.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvpyrsegmentation.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvrotcalipers.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvsamplers.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvsegmentation.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvshapedescr.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvsmooth.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvsnakes.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvstereobm.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvstereogc.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvsubdivision2d.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvsumpixels.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvsurf.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvswitcher.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvtables.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvtemplmatch.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvthresh.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvundistort.cpp Compile++ thumb : cv <= cvutils.cpp StaticLibrary : libcv.a SharedLibrary : libopencv.so U:/flori/workspace/android-ndk-r5b/toolchains/arm-linux-androideabi-4.4.3/prebui lt/windows/bin/../lib/gcc/arm-linux-androideabi/4.4.3/../../../../arm-linux-andr oideabi/bin/ld.exe: cannot find -lcxcore collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [/cygdrive/u/flori/workspace/android/testOpenCV/obj/local/armeabi/libo pencv.so] Error 1 I am trying to compile it on a Windows system and with the newest NDK version... Does anybody have an idea what this linking error means and what I can to to have it work again? Would be great if anybody could help After getting the problem to work I found that there is another way of compiling OpenCV for Android, using the current version of OpenCV (instead of the 1.1 one from above) and the modified Android NDK from crystax, which supports STL and exceptions and therefore supports the newest OpenCV Version. All information on that can be found here: http://opencv.willowgarage.com/wiki/Android There it says to download the current svn trunk and the crystax-r4 android-ndk, as well as swig, which I did. I entered the folder, created the build directory, ran cmake and then built the static libs, which seemed to work. At least it successfully ran the make-command without errors. I now wanted to build the shared libraries so I entered the android-jni folder and ran 'make' again, but got this error: % make -j4 OPENCV_CONFIG = ../build/android-opencv.mk make clean-swig &&\ mkdir -p jni/gen &&\ mkdir -p src/com/opencv/jni &&\ swig -java -c++ -package "com.opencv.jni" \ -outdir src/com/opencv/jni \ -o jni/gen/android_cv_wrap.cpp jni/android-cv.i OPENCV_CONFIG = ../build/android-opencv.mk make[1]: Entering directory `/home/florian/android-opencv-willowgarage/android/android-jni' make[1]: warning: jobserver unavailable: using -j1.   • Bug in the official Android Fragments training sample?

    - by Jeff Axelrod
    It seems to me that there must be a bug in the Android Fragments demo. As background, Fragments are apparently sometimes instantiated by the Android OS and thus need a public no-arg constructor: All subclasses of Fragment must include a public empty constructor. The framework will often re-instantiate a fragment class when needed, in particular during state restore, and needs to be able to find this constructor to instantiate it. If the empty constructor is not available, a runtime exception will occur in some cases during state restore. But the NewsReader demo from the official Android training on Fragments constructs the HeadlinesFragment class and configures it with setOnHeadlineSelectedListener(this) from NewsReaderActivity.onCreate(). If the Android OS re-instantiates this fragment, the mHeadlineSelectedListener field will be null because HeadlinesFragment doesn't save or restore its state. Is this a bug or am I missing something?

  • Android: Autoscrolling HorizontalScrollView

    - by DroidIn.net
    I'm using the following code to simulate tabs and since there are more tabs that width can accommodate user can scroll left or right to make a tab button visible. It all works, however I also provide user with ability to fling between tabs by swiping finger left or right on the tab contents. Again - it works. But when I fling to the rightmost tab its corresponding button is barely visible. I want to autoscroll table inside the HorizontalScrollView so the selected tab button will be visible but when I execute HorizontalScrollView.smoothScrollTo(300, 0) nothing happens. It doen't matter how high I set first x parameter nothing will ever move (yes I do have an algorithm to calculate exact position). Here's XML code for scrolling tab buttons <HorizontalScrollView android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:background="@color/tabs_header" android:layout_height="55dip" android:scrollbars="none" android:id="@+id/tabsButtonView"> <TableLayout android:id="@+id/TableLayout01" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"> <TableRow android:id="@+id/TableRow01" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_height="0dip" android:paddingTop="5dip" android:paddingLeft="3dip"> <ImageButton android:src="@drawable/linkup_logo_small" android:id="@+id/tabBtt0" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_marginLeft="2dip" android:layout_marginRight="2dip" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:padding="5dip" android:background="@drawable/tab_selected"></ImageButton> <ImageButton android:src="@drawable/simplyhired_small" android:id="@+id/tabBtt1" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_marginLeft="2dip" android:layout_marginRight="2dip" android:padding="5dip" android:background="@drawable/tab_normal"></ImageButton> <ImageButton android:src="@drawable/indeedcom_small" android:id="@+id/tabBtt2" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:padding="5dip" android:layout_marginLeft="2dip" android:layout_marginRight="2dip" android:background="@drawable/tab_normal"></ImageButton> <ImageButton android:src="@drawable/careerbuilder_logo_small" android:id="@+id/tabBtt3" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:padding="5dip" android:layout_marginLeft="2dip" android:layout_marginRight="2dip" android:background="@drawable/tab_normal"></ImageButton> </TableRow> </TableLayout> </HorizontalScrollView>

  • How to set an EditText on top of a ListView ?

    - by Spredzy
    Hi everyone, I am trying to do an autocomplete version my way (logic, layout, etc...) , so I don't want to use the AutoCompleteTextView. My question is how to set an EditText on top of a ListView in a class inheriting from a ListAcvitivy. I tried two kinds of layout, none of them worked. First one : <EditText android:id="@+id/autocomplete_server" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_marginLeft="5dp" android:completionThreshold="1" android:singleLine="true"/> <ListView android:id="@id/android:list" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:background="#000000" android:layout_weight="1" android:drawSelectorOnTop="false"/> <TextView android:id="@id/android:empty" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:background="#FF0000" android:text="No data"/> This one only shows me the EditText but does not display the list Second one : <LinearLayout android:id="@id/android:list" android:orientation="horizontal" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:padding="5dp"> <EditText android:id="@+id/autocomplete_server" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_marginLeft="5dp" android:completionThreshold="1" android:singleLine="true"/> <ListView android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:background="#000000" android:layout_weight="1" android:drawSelectorOnTop="false"/> </LinearLayout> This sample gives me a : java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to start activity ComponentInfo{com.eip.core/com.eip.core.Search}: java.lang.ClassCastException: android.widget.LinearLayout Does anyone have any idea bout how to implement an EditText on top of a listView ?

  • Android Home Screen Widget (icon, label - style)

    - by dmulligan
    I'm trying to create an icon/widget (1 cell x 1 cell) that can be placed on the home screen of android. The widget will look and act exactly like the other standard shortcuts in android. It will have an icon and under that a label, it will be selectable with the trackball (highlight able) it will be highlighted when it is selected/clicked. How do I go about creating this home screen widget? Do I have to create the widget myself using code/xml or is there some standard xml, style, theme, code that I can use to ensure that the widget will have the same style/theme as the other home screen widgets? I currently have the following res/drawable/corners.xml <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <shape xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/Corners"> <stroke android:width="4dp" android:color="#CC222222" /> <padding android:left="4dp" android:top="1dp" android:right="4dp" android:bottom="1dp" /> <corners android:radius="4dp" /> </shape> res/layout/widget.xml <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/Widget" android:layout_width="72dip" android:layout_height="72dip" android:orientation="vertical" android:focusable="true" android:gravity="center_horizontal" style="@android:style/Widget" > <ImageView android:id="@+id/WidgetIcon" android:src="@drawable/icon" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="50dip" android:paddingTop="3dip" android:gravity="center" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/WidgetLabel" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:text="@string/app_name" android:textSize="15dip" android:background="@drawable/corners" /> </LinearLayout> The resulting widget looks some what close, but its not selectable, it doesn't get highlighted when clicked and the label isn't exactly in the correct location or the correct style. Any ideas, if there is a correct way to do this, or should I just keep working away on the above until I am closer?

  • Contact-app like scrollinglist on android

    - by Alxandr
    I'm writing my first android app (I'm a noob at android, but decent at java). The first screen of the app consists of a huge list (about 1.5K items) of Manga-objects. The code I use is as following: main.xml: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout android:id="@+id/LinearLayout01" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"> <ListView android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:id="@+id/android:list"></ListView> <TextView android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:text="@string/list_no_items" android:id="@+id/android:empty"></TextView> </LinearLayout> row.xml: <LinearLayout android:id="@+id/LinearLayout01" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="?android:attr/listPreferredItemHeight" android:padding="6dip" xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"> <ImageView android:id="@+id/icon" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_marginRight="6dip" android:src="@drawable/icon" /> <LinearLayout android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="0dip" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_height="fill_parent"> <TextView android:id="@+id/toptext" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="0dip" android:layout_weight="1" android:gravity="center_vertical" /> <TextView android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="0dip" android:layout_weight="1" android:id="@+id/bottomtext" android:singleLine="true" android:ellipsize="marquee" /> </LinearLayout> </LinearLayout> Then I have a adapter which basically takes a Manga-object and puts it's name in the rows toptext, and it's latest updated date in the bottomtext. However, (this might be caused by the virtualization of the unit though), the result is really slow. Scrolling the list takes forever and you can only scroll small peaces of the time. How can I make the list work like the one in the contacts-app? So that when you start scrolling a handle pops out at the right side of the screen, and when you drag it letters shows up as of how far you've scrolled (the list is sorted alphabetically), and also, is there a way I could improve the performance of the list?

  • Android: onClick on LinearLayout with TextView and Button

    - by Terry
    I have a Fragment that uses the following XML layout: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" android:background="@drawable/card" android:clickable="true" android:onClick="editActions" android:orientation="vertical" > <TextView android:id="@+id/title" style="@style/CardTitle" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:duplicateParentState="true" android:text="@string/title_workstation" /> <Button android:id="@+id/factory_button_edit" style="?android:attr/buttonStyleSmall" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:duplicateParentState="true" android:text="@string/label_edit" /> </LinearLayout> As you can see, I have an onClick parameter set on LinearLayout. Now on the TextView this one is triggered correctly, and on all empty area. Just on the Button it doesn't invoke the onClick method that I set. Is this normal? What do I have to do so that the onClick method is invoked everywhere on the LinearLayout?

  • My app has some basic problems, and it stops working

    - by user2882662
    I am writing a basic application which contains two activities. Both contain a TextView showing the title and the first one contains an EditText in which the user types a message and clicks on a button on its side, the second activity is launched which shows the message the user types. It has the following problems: The title (the first TextView in both the activities) doesn't show in the middle of the line, despite of the android:gravity="center_horizontal" attribute. The EditText in the first activity does not show at all. When I click on the button, the app stops saying "Unfortunately Write n Display and stopped.", rather than launching the second activity at all. I don't have adequate knowledge about logcat, but I have followed the steps somebody had told me, that is WindowOpen Perspective Other DDMS Then run the app and select the package name from the Devices and click on log cat, select the exception(s) and export to text file. All contained in the text file is : : E/(): Device disconnected: 1 Since I am not sure of using log cat, so I am posting a screenshot to make clear what I have done. • How to align Buttons in a TableLayout to different directions?

    - by Bevor
    Hello, probably I don't understand the layout properties of TableLayout yet. It doesn't seem to be possible to achieve such a flexible table like in HTML, because there are no cells. My target is it to achieve such a layout: Link to draft How can I do that? I thought about using a GridView but this doesn't seem to be useful in XML. My efforts look like this: <TableLayout android:id="@+id/tableLayout" android:layout_width="320sp" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_gravity="center_horizontal" android:gravity="bottom" android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"> <TableRow android:background="#333333" android:gravity="bottom" android:layout_width="fill_parent"> <Button android:id="@+id/btnUp" android:layout_width="60sp" android:layout_height="50sp" android:gravity="left" android:text="Lift U" /> <Button android:id="@+id/btnScreenUp" android:gravity="right" android:layout_gravity="right" android:layout_width="60sp" android:layout_height="50sp" android:text="Scrn U" /> </TableRow> <TableRow android:background="#444444" android:gravity="bottom" android:layout_gravity="right"> <Button android:id="@+id/btnDown" android:layout_width="60sp" android:layout_height="50sp" android:text="Lift D" /> <Button android:id="@+id/btnScreenLeft" android:layout_width="60sp" android:layout_height="50sp" android:gravity="right" android:layout_gravity="right" android:text="Scrn L" /> <Button android:id="@+id/btnScreenDown" android:layout_width="60sp" android:layout_height="50sp" android:gravity="right" android:layout_gravity="right" android:text="Scrn D" /> <Button android:id="@+id/btnScreenRight" android:layout_width="60sp" android:layout_height="50sp" android:gravity="right" android:layout_gravity="right" android:text="Scrn R" /> </TableRow> </TableLayout>

  • Android - Display HTML Formatted String

    - by Soren
    I need an example of how to display the strings that I have marked up with simple html into a TextView. I have found "Spanned fromHtml(String source)", but I don't know how to plug it into my java code. Here is my Java: package com.SorenWinslow.TriumphHistory; import android.app.ListActivity; import android.os.Bundle; import android.widget.ArrayAdapter; public class TriumphHistory extends ListActivity { String[] HistoryList; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); ArrayAdapter<String> adapter; HistoryList = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.history); adapter = new ArrayAdapter<String> (this,R.layout.historylistlayout,HistoryList); setListAdapter(adapter); } } Here is a sample of history: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <resources> <string-array name="history"> <item><b>1883</b><br/>Some stuff happened</item> <item><b>1884</b><br/>Some more stuff happened <i>before</i> the other stuff </item> <resources> Here is my historylistlayout.xml: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <TextView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@android:id/text1" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge" android:gravity="center_vertical" android:textColor="#ffffff" android:background="#000050" android:layout_marginTop="5px" android:minHeight="?android:attr/listPreferredItemHeight" android:padding="3px" android:textSize="8pt" android:layout_gravity="top|left"/> And here is my main.xml <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:textColor="#ffffff" android:background="#000080" android:isScrollContainer="true" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:scrollbarStyle="insideOverlay"> <ListView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@android:id/list" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:clickable="true" android:dividerHeight="1px"/> </LinearLayout>

  • Why my button can trigger the UI to scroll and my TimerTask inside the activity can't?

    - by Spidey
    Long Story Short: a method of my activity updates and scrolls the ListView through an ArrayAdapter like it should, but a method of an internal TimerTask for polling messages (which are displayed in the ListView) updates the ListView, but don't scroll it. Why? Long Story: I have a chat activity with this layout: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:background="#fff" > <ListView android:id="@+id/messageList" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:stackFromBottom="true" android:transcriptMode="alwaysScroll" android:layout_weight="1" android:fadeScrollbars="true" /> <LinearLayout android:orientation="horizontal" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:gravity="center" > <EditText android:id="@+id/message" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_weight="1" /> <Button android:id="@+id/button_send" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="Send" android:onClick="sendMessage" /> </LinearLayout> </LinearLayout> The internal listView (with id messageList) is populated by an ArrayAdapter which inflates the XML below and replaces strings in it. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:clickable="false" android:background="#fff" android:paddingLeft="2dp" android:paddingRight="2dp" > <TextView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/date" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:textSize="16sp" android:textColor="#00F" android:typeface="monospace" android:text="2010-10-12 12:12:03" android:gravity="left" /> <TextView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/sender" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:textSize="16sp" android:textColor="#f84" android:text="spidey" android:gravity="right" android:textStyle="bold" /> <TextView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/body" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:textSize="14sp" android:padding="1dp" android:gravity="left" android:layout_below="@id/date" android:text="Mensagem muito legal 123 quatro cinco seis." android:textColor="#000" /> </RelativeLayout> The problem is: in the main layout, I have a EditText for the chat message, and a Button to send the message. I have declared the adapter in the activity scope: public class ChatManager extends Activity{ private EditText et; private ListView lv; private Timestamp lastDate = null; private long campaignId; private ChatAdapter ca; private List<ChatMessage> vetMsg = new ArrayList<ChatMessage>(); private Timer chatPollingTimer; private static final int CHAT_POLLING_PERIOD = 10000; ... } So, inside sendMessage(View v), the notifyDataSetChanged() scrolls the ListView acordingly, so I can see the latest chat messages automatically: public void sendMessage(View v) { String msg = et.getText().toString(); if(msg.length() == 0){ return; } et.setText(""); String xml = ServerCom.sendAndGetChatMessages(campaignId, lastDate, msg); Vector<ChatMessage> vetNew = Chat.parse(new InputSource(new StringReader(xml))); //Pegando a última data if(!vetNew.isEmpty()){ lastDate = vetNew.lastElement().getDateSent(); //Atualizando a tela vetMsg.addAll(vetNew); ca.notifyDataSetChanged(); } } But inside my TimerTask, I can't. The ListView IS UPDATED, but it just don't scroll automatically. What am I doing wrong? private class chatPollingTask extends TimerTask { @Override public void run() { String xml; if(lastDate != null){ //Chama o Updater xml = ServerCom.getChatMessages(campaignId, lastDate); }else{ //Chama o init denovo xml = ServerCom.getChatMessages(campaignId); } Vector<ChatMessage> vetNew = Chat.parse(new InputSource(new StringReader(xml))); if(!(vetNew.isEmpty())){ //TODO: descobrir porque o chat não está rolando quando chegam novas mensagens //Descobrir também como forçar o rolamento, enquanto o bug não for corrigido. Log.d("CHAT", "New message(s) acquired!"); lastDate = vetNew.lastElement().getDateSent(); vetMsg.addAll(vetNew); ca.notifyDataSetChanged(); } } } How can I force the scroll to the bottom? I've tried using scrollTo using lv.getBottom()-lv.getHeight(), but didn't work. Is this a bug in the Android SDK? Sorry for the MASSIVE amount of code, but I guess this way the question gets pretty clear.
