  • Change connection on the fly

    Hello, I have a SQL server with 50 databases. Each one has the exact same schema. I used the awesome Subsonic 2.2 create the DAL based on one of them. I need to loop though a list of database names and connect to each one and perform an update one at a time. If there a way to alter how subsonic uses the connection string. I believe I would need to store the connection string in memory that way it can keep changing. Is this possible? I tried doing a ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["theConnStrName"].ConnectionString = updated-connection-string-here; .. but that did not work thanks!

  • Best way to auto-restore a database every hour

    I have a demo site where anyone can login and test a management interface. Every hour I would like to flush all the data in the SQL 2008 Database and restore it from the original. Red Gate Software has some awesome tools for this, however they are beyond my budget right now. Could I simply make a backup copy of the database's data file, then have a c# console app that deletes it and copies over the original. Then I can have a windows schedule task to run the .exe every hour. It's simple and free... would this work? I'm using SQL Server 2008 R2 Web edition I understand that Red Gate Software is technically better because I can set it to analyze the db and only update the records that were altered, and the approach I have above is like a "sledge hammer".

  • FileStream to save file then immediately unlock in .NET ?

    I have this code that saves a pdf file. FileStream fs = new FileStream(SaveLocation, FileMode.Create); fs.Write(result.DocumentBytes, 0, result.DocumentBytes.Length); fs.Flush(); fs.Close(); It works fine. However sometimes it does not release the lock right away and that causes file locking exceptions with functions run after this one run. Is there a ideal way to release the file lock right after the fs.Close()

  • Should developers *really* have private offices?

    We will probably be moving within a year, so we have to make some decisions regarding office layout. At the moment, our company is basically one big office. When our developers can't bother to be disturbed at all, we all have our own headphones to mute the outside world. Still, it seems a lot of people feel that private offices are no doubt the way to go. From Joel's article Private Offices Redux: Not every programmer in the world wants to work in a private office. In fact quite a few would tell you unequivocally that they prefer the camaradarie and easy information sharing of an open space. Don't fall for it. They also want M&Ms for breakfast and a pony. Open space is fun but not productive. Even though I can understand the benefit on productivity, does having a private office really result in more net productivity? There seem to be plenty of companies that create wide open spaces and still maintain good productivity. Or so it seems. (I should mention many of them use cubicles, though) What is your opinion on this? What does your company do? Is there some middle ground in this?   • How to step frames in a movie recorded by iPhone

    Is there a way to have my iPhone program step frame by frame through a movie recorded by the iPhone? What I want to do is have the user record a quicktime movie, then be able to step through the movie frame by frame. Alternately, I suppose if there was a way to extract every single frame from the movie to a jpg, then I could easily step through the pictures. Anyone know of a way to do this??? I suppose the third option (which might not get past Apple's store) is to capture the movie the way the old jailbroken apps did, which is somehow capture the pictures directly from the camera view????   • choose append to existing backup instead of overwrite

    Hello, I have a database and I made it's first backup 2 days ago. Then yesterday I spent an entire adding new records. This morning I ran a backup, (but I selected append to existing backup set) as pictured below. I just ran a restore and I found that it wiped out all my data from yesterday and it restored it from the backup of 2 days ago. Not the version from this mornings backup. I zipped this backup file to be safe. I changed some data in the DB, Then I ran the back up again, but this time I selected "overwrite all existing backup sets" Now when I restore the db it's seems to restore the data from the backup correctly. I think I learned a lesson here, correctly if I'm wrong My questions is, Did I lose an entire day of work? I still have this morning's backup .bak file safe in a zip. Is there anyway I can restore is with the right data?

  • Handling large (object) datasets with PHP

    I am currently working on a project that extensively relies on the EAV model. Both entities as their attributes are individually represented by a model, sometimes extending other models (or at least, base models). This has worked quite well so far since most areas of the application only rely on filtered sets of entities, and not the entire dataset. Now, however, I need to parse the entire dataset (IE: all entities and all their attributes) in order to provide a sorting/filtering algorithm based on the attributes. The application currently consists of aproximately 2200 entities, each with aproximately 100 attributes. Every entity is represented by a single model (for example Client_Model_Entity) and has a protected property called $_attributes, which is an array of Attribute objects. Each entity object is about 500KB, which results in an incredible load on the server. With 2000 entities, this means a single task would take 1GB of RAM (and a lot of CPU time) in order to work, which is unacceptable. Are there any patterns or common approaches to iterating over such large datasets? Paging is not really an option, since everything has to be taken into account in order to provide the sorting algorithm.

    Is it somehow possible to handle a download abort in PHP? In this specific case I am not speaking of a connection abort, but handling the event that triggers when the 'cancel' button in the browser download dialog button is clicked. Since this dialog already interprets the headers of the file that is to be download but does not actually start the download, it only seems logical there should be some way to catch this. Small (pseudo) code example to clear things up: // set some headers header('...'); // Question: what happens between the part where the headers are sent // and the actual data is being outputted to the client?   • How to save multiple UIImage to a file iPad

    I have a PDF reader that displays pages of the document. What I want to do is allow the user to draw over the PDF in a transparent view. Then I want to save the drawing (UIImage) to disk. If at all possible, I don't want to have the documents folder filled with files like documentName_page01.png, documentName_page02.png for every page that is drawn over. However, I can't figure out how to store these UIImages into a single file without it becoming unwieldy and memory intensive. Any ideas appreciated.

    So i'm triying to create a little "XCOM : Enemy Unknown" like game ,and using the Aron Granberg's Pathfinding-Tool (free version) to handle the "click to move part. i want to add a little trap system where the hero get stuck inside an area, so he will have only the possibility to move inside this trapped area, so far everything is fine however when i click outside the trapped area, the hero try to reach the destination even though the wall will prevents him from reaching it. so my question is, is there any way to restrict the area where the pathfinding system work to the trapped area dynamically. and wich Graph Type is recommended to use in this situation or this kind of Games (Grid Graph/Navmesh Graph/Point Graph).   • Does scheduling recycling app pool in IIS7 help the server conserve memory better?

    Hello, I have a VPS (IIS7 with Win 2008) It's got: 40 websites and a SQL Server 2008 powering them with only 2 Gigs of RAM. None of the sites are mission critical, they are all just demos. I often have ram issues on the server because each site has does caching and generally uses a lot of memory. Would it make sense to set the application pools to recycle every 3 hours? I'm sure this would free up any memory leaks or processes left "hanging" Are there any other tips on this? Thank you very much!, Aron
