• Data migration - dangerous or essential?

  The software development department of my company is facing with the problem that data migrations are considered as potentially dangerous, especially for my managers. The background is that our customers are using a large amount of data with poor quality. The reasons for this is only partially related to our software quality, but rather to the history of the data: Most of them have been migrated from predecessor systems, some bugs caused (mostly business) inconsistencies in the data records or misentries by accident on the customer's side (which our software allowed by error). The most important counter-arguments from my managers are that faulty data may turn into even worse data, the data troubles may awake some managers at the customer and some processes on the customer's side may not work anymore because their processes somewhat adapted to our system. Personally, I consider data migrations as an integral part of the software development and that data migration can been seen to data what refactoring is to code. I think that data migration is an essential for creating software that evolves. Without it, we would have to create painful software which somewhat works around a bad data structure. I am asking you: What are your thoughts to data migration, especially for the real life cases and not only from a developer's perspecticve? Do you have any arguments against my managers opinions? How does your company deal with data migrations and the difficulties caused by them? Any other interesting thoughts which belongs to this topics?

• How do I make time?

  I wanted to output a text for a certain amount of time. One way is to use threads. Are there any other ways? I can't use threads for slick2d. • Moving a Cube from a GUI texture on iOS [on hold]

  I really hope someone can help me in this since I am working already two days but without any result. What I' am trying to achieve in this instance is to move a GameObject when a GUI Texture is touch on a Iphone. The GameObject to be moved is named Cube. The Cube has a Script named "Left" that supposedly when is "call it " from the GUITexture the Cube should move left. I hope is clear: I want to "activated" the script in the Game Object from the Guitexture. I try to use send message but without any joy as well so I am using GetComponent.   Greetings, It's that time of year again. The time when I beg you for money for charity. See, unlike those bell ringers outside Wal-Mart, I don't do it when you have ten bazillion holiday obligations... Once again, I will be enduring a 24-hour marathon of gaming to raise money for Children Hospital in Birmingham. All the money goes straight to them, and you get to tell Uncie Samual that you're good for that money. I'd REALLY like to break $1000 this year, as I have come REALLY close for the past 2 year to doing so. Don't live near me? Live closer to a children's hospital in the Children's Miracle Network? • Automatically revert to laptop screen when external monitor unplugged

  I regularly use an external monitor with my laptop, so when I use it, I usually have the laptop screen disabled when the monitor is connected, and this seems to cause problems when the monitor is disconnected. If the monitor is connected while the laptop screen is disabled, I can't get the X session to show up at all: I can Ctrl+Alt+F1 to open a terminal, and that works fine.. ..but Ctrl+Alt+F7 does nothing. The display is blank, and stays blank. The same thing happens whether I put the computer to sleep with the monitor connected, or if I disconnect while the computer is still awake. Rebooting the computer fixes the issue, as does killing Xorg and starting it again, but both of those are sub-optimal since I lose my current session. I'm currently using the open source graphics driver (xserver-xorg-video-ati). This question looks like it might answer my question, but unfortunately hwinfo is no longer available in the apt repository. Is there a way with current tools to automatically detect when the external monitor is disconnected and switch to the laptop display?

• Java and C# in web development [on hold]

  I am wondering whether C# development(ASP.NET) is rather kind of "rapid development" or something "big" like JavaEE/Spring? We all know, that RoR or Django are really rapid-development frameworks - and so - is C# closer to Java "long-timed-development" or to frameworks like the two above - Django, RoR? I am, for now, an amateur Java programmer and sometimes I get annoyed with the amount of code that have to be written to create even a short CRUD app. We need a lot of skills to create at least a small app. I want some change, at least for some time and learn something new. I tried (just few hours) first: RoR, then Django and now I am writing in C#. It seems to be like Java but a little bit extended. In respect of future work as a professional coder - Is it profitable to know both competitive technologies like Java (and its frameworks) and C# with .NET(ASP.NET for example)? Maybe better choice is Python? Or just stop being stupid and still work with Java but with another framework(and master my Java skills) or JavaScript, jQuery to be better at web-development? Actually this question depends on your own opinions that is why I know that this question could be blocked by admins. But main question is in the top of the post I mean: is C# web-development rapid or closer to Java? I am afraid, that if I don't try, I will regret in the future, when I awake and think: oh my god, how could I not get familiar with (another_technology_or_language) Thanks for your attention :) ps I had asked the same question on stackoverflow, but it was hold because of being opinion based. • How to optimize a box2d simulation in action game?

  I'm working on an action game and i use box2d for physics. The game use a tiled map. I have different types of body: Static ones used for tiles Dynamic ones for player and enemies Actually i tested my game with ~150 bodies and i have a 60fps constantly on my computer but not on my mobile (android). The FPS drop as the number of body increase. After having profiled the android application, i saw that the World.step took around 8ms in CPU time to execute. Here are few things to note: Not all the world is visible on screen, i use a scrolling system Enemies are constantly moving toward the player so there is alaways to force applied to their body Enemies need to collide between each others Enemies collide with tiles I also now that i can active/desactive or sleep/awake bodies. Considering the fact that only a part of the enemies are possibly displayed on screen, is there any optimizations i can do to reduce the execution time of box2d simulation? I found a guy trying an optimization based on distance of enemies from the player (link). But i seems like he just desactives far bodies (in my case, i could desactive bodies that are not visible). But my enemies need to move even when they are not visible on screen, and applying forces will not workd on inactive bodies. Should i play with sleeping bodies here? Also, enemies are composed by two fixtures and are constantly colliding with each others and with tiles but i really never need to get notified about that. Is there anything i can do to optimize this kind of scenario? Finally, am i wrong to try to run simulation at 60FPS on mobile and should i try to make it run at 30FPS?

• Site experiencing low traffic volume between 8AM and 4PM BST

  There may be no definitive answer to this question but I thought peer review of the problem might stimulate some ideas on the topic. We have a boutique sales site that is experiencing low volumes of traffic (both UK and international) between 8AM and 4PM BST. This seems sort of strange since our target audience for the site is UK based, and this would seem to be when people are awake and online. We are in contact with another boutique site in the same sector who don't experience this issue, so it seems kinda strange. Later on in the day we are getting traffic from the UK, as well as a fair amount of international traffic, so I'm at a loss to figure this one out. The site is fairly well optimised including:- sitemap.xml Proper caching policies across the board google merchant dublin core microdata html5 pretty urls meta and content are reviewed as an ongoing concern we have decent sitelinks for direct queries thru google on the site name a decent amount of inbound links FB, Twitter, Google +1 Google maps listing [verified] site has been selling for ~4 months and is getting ~250 users per day. So I'm not entirely sure how to explain the mid day dip in our figures.... Any ideas at all would be useful. Cheers all!

Any suggestions to how to fix it?

• A regex to match a comma that isn't surrounded by quotes.

  I'm using Clojure, so this is in the context of Java regexes. Here is an example string: "{:a "ab,cd, efg", :b "ab,def, egf,", :c "Conjecture"}" The important bits are the commas after each string. I'd like to be able to replace them with newline characters with Java's replaceAll method. A regex that will match any comma that is not surrounded by quotes will do. If I'm not coming across well, please ask and I'll be happily to clarify anything. edit: sorry for the confusion in the title. I haven't been awake very long. String: {:a "ab, cd efg",} <-- In this example, the comma at the end would be matched, but the ones inside the quote would not.

• Using enums or a set of classes when I know I have a finite set of different options?

  Let's say I have defined the following class: public abstract class Event { public DateTime Time { get; protected set; } protected Event(DateTime time) { Time = time; } } What would you prefer between this: public class AsleepEvent : Event { public AsleepEvent(DateTime time) : base(time) { } } public class AwakeEvent : Event { public AwakeEvent(DateTime time) : base(time) { } } and this: public enum StateEventType { NowAwake, NowAsleep } public class StateEvent : Event { protected StateEventType stateType; public MealEvent(DateTime time, StateEventType stateType) : base(time) { stateType = stateType; } } and why? I am generally more inclined to the first option, but I can't explain why. Is it totally the same or are any advantages in using one instead of the other? Maybe with the first method its easier to add more "states", altough in this case I am 100% sure I will only want two states: now awake, and now asleep (they signal the moments when one awakes and one falls asleep).

• jQuery image fade not working for unknown reason...?

  Just when I thought I was done for the night, another issue is keeping me awake. It appears that somehow I have broken the fade I was using on my thumbnails. • How to access web page hierarchy inside a application.

• Submitting GET data with no input field?

  I've never really thought about this, but it helps with some security of something I'm currently working on. Is it possible to submit GET data without an actual input field, and instead just getting it from the URL? If so, how would I go about doing this? It kind of makes sense that it should be possible, but at the same time it makes no sense at all. Perhaps I've been awake too long and need some rest.   Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). It is with great humbleness and honor that I accept Microsoft’s MVP award for 2010. This will be my .. I forget how many years, as an MVP. So suffice to say, I was a lot younger when I first got the MVP award, but also the excitement never dies. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still young, foolish and weird :). (and good looking, might I add) I’d like to share a few things with you on what I have learnt being a part of this very prestigious program that I am so unworthy of. Never aim to be an MVP. Let it be a consequence of what you already are. Always be down to earth, just because you’re an MVP doesn’t mean you’re better than anyone else. The biggest reward of the MVP program, yes much bigger than the free top notch MSDN subscription, is the amazing interaction you will have with other fellow MVPs, and incredibly smart people in the community in general. • Ubuntu turns off instead of suspend / sleeping

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 on my notebook as the main OS. How ever, I've been facing a serious problem: Every time I try to suspend it, or it just stays idle for a while, the computer shuts down, instead of suspending. It actually seems to be suspended, but when I press the button the awake it, it turns on, the open works are all lost. How can i fix this? P.s: On windows 7 the suspend / sleep resumes just fine. • Travelling MVP #2: Community event at Bucharest, Romania

  My second trip was to DevReach with two stops. My first stop was at Bucharest where I met with my friend Dimitar Georgiev who is one of authors of Gym Realm service. Romanian MVP Andrei Ignat was our host there and organized meeting with local community guys. With me – it was first time in my life – was one more guy from Estonia visiting DevReach and he made the whole trip with me. Bucharest We arrived to Bucharest 29.09 at night. We stayed at Hotel Michelangelo. It’s small hotel with nice rooms, free WiFi and very good service. Although my room was on the first floor there was no street noise. We visited one restaurant that offers national cuisine and it was really great. Next day we went out with local guys and had some beers in “old town”. Bucharest “old town” is nice and cozy. There are many bars open and I am sure everybody will find there some very okay place. After supper we visited one warm karaoke bar where we had beers with local guys. Andrei Ignat – karaoke star Agu Suur and Andrei Ion Rinea enjoying karaoke and tequila Community event Next day we had community event. I made my session about ASP.NET Web API and Dimitar told about how to port ASP.NET web applications to cloud environment. Sessions were held at study class of one local company. Dimitar Georgiev speaking about porting web apps to Windows Azure. As it was usual community evening and not some bigger event there were about 12 guys attending from Bucharest. There were both IT-PROs and developers and one nice thing about Bucharest community is that they are listening to you very well and they ask questions if something is unclear or if you slide over from topic they are interested in. Okay, we tried to keep up good tempo so people stay awake and I think we succeeded. After sessions we went all together to local Piranha pub that was near event venue. We had some beers with local guys and talked with them on different technology topics. It was another good and interesting evening at Bucharest. I want to go back there for sure. As it was my first trip to Bucharest and mostly I gathered experiences I think my next community trip there will be way stronger. I take it as a challenge. Plus – I have there some new friends and I want to meet them too – be it community event or not. :)

• Ubuntu won't suspend automatically any more

  In the last month or so, Ubuntu (12.04) has stopped sleeping automatically. I've gone to System Settings Power, and verified (and toggled) "suspend on inactive for" to 5 minutes (for both battery and "when plugged in"), but the system stays awake. I've also tried used code similar to $ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-inactive-ac-timeout 300 $ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-inactive-battery-timeout 300 to set the timeout values. I've also verified these in dconf Editor. Previously, I could set this quite low to make my computer sleep quickly, but now it no longer works either. I'm not sure if this is relevant, but under old versions of Ubuntu, if I wanted my computer to never suspend (via the CLI), I would also have to set $ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-inactive-ac false At some point, this seemed to have been depreciated (and also gave me the error "No such key 'sleep-inactive-ac'"). I found that it it was enough to set sleep-inactive-ac-timeout to 0. This worked for a while, but at some point auto-suspend stopped working as stated above. Oddly enough, the sleep-inactive-ac key is still present when I look via dconf editor. However, when I click it, it says "no schema", and the summary, etc. fields are blank. To test if the dconf power plugin was working, I tried playing around with other settings in the schema. Idle-dim-time and idle-dim-ac work as expected . However, setting sleep-display-ac to 5 seconds has no effect. I'm also not sure if this is relevant, but I've uninstalled gnome-screensaver, and installed xscreensaver. I have tried killing xscreensaver and re-installing gnome-screensaver, but this did not help. I've also had some trouble with DPMS. I'm not sure if this is related, but I'll put the information here, just in case. Using xscreensaver, I set Power Management to enabled, with standby and suspend timeouts to 10 minutes. I've verified these settings in ~/.xscreensaver and xset q. However, the screen blanks after about 30 seconds. If I turn off DPMS (either via xscreensaver GUI or modifying ~/.xscreensaver), it won't blank at all, so I know that DPMS is partially reading the xscreensaver settings. -- edit I've attempted more troubleshooting, by creating a new user account, then logging out of the main account and into the new account. I've tried modifying the timeouts via dconf, but get the same results as above (i.e. it doesn't work, nor does sleep-display-ac, but idle-dim-time and idle-dim-ac work). Also, the depreciated sleep-display-ac key is not visible, so I think that this is probably unrelated. -- edit I've since moved to gnome-shell instead of unity, and still have this problem, so I guess that it's something to do with gnome-power-manager.

• Are they asking too much of me?

  Or am I just whining? Background: I work for a "startup," which I put in air quotes because the company has been around for 4 years. We have about 40 employees in three offices, 9 here plus some part time. We have a good amount of investment and bring in about 75% of what we spend (so not profitable just yet.) Standard work week is supposed to be about 60 hours, but they justify that as we have to be online when our international (Taiwan and Vietnam) offices are awake. When I started the job 6 months ago, I spent about a month prototyping an iphone app and did really well on my own. They also found out about my facebook applications and how many users they got. Putting 2 and 2 together (and winding up at -7) they realized 1. I'm independent and innovative (because I was able to use stackoverflow to answer my iOS questions instead of bugging my superiors) and 2. I must have an eye for marketing (since my fb apps grew totally organically without me doing any advertising), and assigned me to a project optimizing adwords campaigns. Today I got reviewed, and then chewed out, by our CEO for not totally rocking this project. Now I thought I was doing ok, but the CEO said the project is stagnant and they're expecting more from me. But since it's a startup, they play loose with job roles and I've had plenty of other things to do in the past three months. Every time I ask what's most important, I get conflicting responses depending who I ask, and the end result is that almost everything has equal priority - high. I could go on about how I don't think adwords is worthwhile for us since our profit margin is so slim, and how we should be trying to improve our website first, but that's not the point. I also have explained to the office director (who originally assigned me the project, not the CEO) that I don't actually know anything about marketing, I'm just a decent programmer, but they think my general smarts will prove capable of tackling this challenge. The CEO also clarified that he wants a more technical and algorithmic approach to the problem. So is there something I can do to address this? Combined with my existing and confusing workload, should I be raising an issue? Or should I do the grown up thing and give it my all, asking for help when I need it and hoping for the best? • Leopard Network Shares and browsing are unreliable

  I have two macs, running Leopard 10.5.8. One is the 13" MBP connected via WiFi, and the other is a 24" 2008 iMac, connected via ethernet. There are at least another 6-10 machines (windows and mac) awake on the network (with shares) at any given time, yet there are plenty of times where I cannot see any devices/shares in either my "Shared" section in Finder, nor can I see any computers in "Network" in Finder. Restarting doesn't help. I've restarted all the networking gear in the house to no avail. Our network is a series of gigabit switches connected to a D-Link gaming router. I believe we use OpenDNS, and our provider is Cox. I hate having to use "Go - Connect to Server" to browse to commonly used file shares (by IP). I'd like to know why my shares do not always and consistently appear in Leopard. Edit: I ran OnyX this morning, and performed the cleaning and maintenance operations (including disk permissions) on both my Macs, and at least one of my macs has started showing network devices again. (the other is still going). No idea how long this will last. Any ideas as to what is causing this issue, and how to prevent it? Edit 2: Aaaand there the shares go again. So running OnyX is not a permanent or reliable fix for this issue. Edit 3: After a clean reinstall and update, network shares are still unreliable. The SMBClient command mentioned in comments shows me the information it's supposed to show, but the shares do not appear in the shared section. They'll also vanish at random and reappear at random throughout the day.

• iBook G4 has black screen on boot

  I have an old iBook G4 (A1054, 1.2 GHz) which has issues when it loses power or is shut off. If the battery drains—which happens quickly, as its remaining capacity is very low—it enters some sort of weird mode where it's not really awake (the screen is black, can't do anything) but it has no pulsing light indicating it's asleep either. The only way to exit this mode is to hold down the power button for ten seconds until it shuts off, and attempt rebooting it. Almost always, however, it makes the sound of the optical drive starting up, and then doesn't continue past that point. The screen doesn't come on, and things like resetting PRAM don't work. Occasionally a fan comes on loudly for a second or two. This sometimes seems to correspond with my pressing down on the rear-right casing, above the power jack. In the past, shutting it off, disconnecting it from power, removing the battery and waiting for 30 minutes would do the trick, but this time I have done that several times, letting it sit for up to several hours before retrying, to no avail. Any ideas?

• Password Manager that allows syncing accross platforms

  I use OS X, Linux, Solaris and windows for work and from home. There are good tools that allow me to manage the many logins/passwords required platform independently. But mostly they expect me to carry a thumb-drive around or require direct access to a central location (a sky drive in the cloud). The thumb-drive is too easily lost (= synchronized backup needed), the central location not always reachable/ mountable. Besides company policy rightly prevents this often. Is there a tool that allows me to add passwords locally and then syncs it's DB with the "mother-ship" later. Or is there another approach that you use, that solves my problem? EDIT My question is more about "synchronize" than cross platform. I've evaluated (=read feature list) some good cross platform tools, but need one that does the synchronizing for me. By synchronize I mean "merge two versions" not "replace (hopefully) old file with new." I'm not sure I'm always disciplined/awake enough to prevent data loss. UPDATE Lifehacker just posted that AgileSolutions now have a beta version of 1Password for Windows.

• NTDS Replication Warning (Event ID 2089)

  I have a simple little network with 3 AD servers in 2 sites. Site A has Win2k3 SP2 and Win2k SP4 servers, site B has a single Win2k3 SP2 server. All have been in place for at least 3 years now. Just last week I started getting Event 2089 "not backed up" warnings (example below) on both of the win2k3 servers. I understand what the message means, no need to send me links to the technet article explaining it. I'll improve my backups. What I'm more curious about is why did I just start getting this message now? Why haven't I been getting it for the past 3 years?!? Perhaps this is related: I recently decommissioned a few other sites and AD controllers (there used to be 3 more sites, each with their own controller). Don't worry, I did proper DCpromo exercises and made sure we didn't lose anything. But would shutting those down possibly be related to why I get this error now? This won't keep me awake at night but I am curious as to what changed... • Event Log "Wake Source" when system wakes from sleep

  So I've been troubleshooting sleep timers for our systems and have run across an interesting issue. I need a way to report how long a system was awake after a number of different inputs. Now, I've discovered that the System Log tracks wake and sleep events and even tells you the times that everything happens at. The thing is doesn't tell you is what triggered the wake event. It does give you a numerical code however. Here are some examples of what I am finding. Index : 2901 EntryType : Information InstanceId : 1 Message : The system has resumed from sleep.
