  • Bonnie does not provide speed for Sequential Input / Block

    - by Lqp1
I'm using ProxmoxVE and I would like to run some benchmarks regarding performances of this product. One of these benchmarks is bonnie++ ; it runs very well in a VM (qemu-kvm) but when I run it in a conainer (openVZ), it does not provide me reading speed (only writing). I don't understand why... Does anyone know what's happenning ? VMs ans Containers are Debian 7.4. Here's the output of bonnie in the container: root@ct2:/# bonnie++ -u root Using uid:0, gid:0. • Uninstalling MySQL for MariaDB Replacement on cPanel

    - by ImmortalFirefly
Well the first part of my day was spent researching how to remove MySQL to install MariaDB and the second part of my day was spent trying to reinstall MySQL cause something was messed up. So now I come to the masses for some help. I have a box with cPanel/WHM on it. CentOS 5.6 64 bit. I have upgraded (through WHM) MySQL to 5.5.24 and that was successful. After some research, the options I found were an intimidating Linux command with pipes greps and dashes, and another command yum remove mysql I tried that out and it appeared to remove mysql.....ish. I tried installing MariaDB from this instructions page and it started to do it's thing and then came the zillions of errors (here's a small sample): Transaction Check Error: file /etc/init.d/mysql from install of MariaDB-server-5.5.25-1.i386 conflicts with file from package MySQL-server-5.5.24-1.cp.1132.x86_64 file /usr/bin/mysql_convert_table_format from install of MariaDB-server-5.5.25-1.i386 conflicts with file from package MySQL-server-5.5.24-1.cp.1132.x86_64 file /usr/bin/mysql_install_db from install of MariaDB-server-5.5.25-1.i386 conflicts with file from package MySQL-server-5.5.24-1.cp.1132.x86_64 file /usr/bin/mysql_secure_installation from install of MariaDB-server-5.5.25-1.i386 conflicts with file from package MySQL-server-5.5.24-1.cp.1132.x86_64 file /usr/bin/mysqlbug from install of MariaDB-server-5.5.25-1.i386 conflicts with file from package MySQL-server-5.5.24-1.cp.1132.x86_64 file /usr/bin/mysqld_multi from install of MariaDB-server-5.5.25-1.i386 conflicts with file from package MySQL-server-5.5.24-1.cp.1132.x86_64 file /usr/bin/mysqld_safe from install of MariaDB-server-5.5.25-1.i386 conflicts with file from package MySQL-server-5.5.24-1.cp.1132.x86_64 file /usr/bin/mysqldumpslow from install of MariaDB-server-5.5.25-1.i386 conflicts with file from package MySQL-server-5.5.24-1.cp.1132.x86_64 file /usr/bin/mysqlhotcopy from install of MariaDB-server-5.5.25-1.i386 conflicts with file from package MySQL-server-5.5.24-1.cp.1132.x86_64 file /usr/share/man/man1/innochecksum.1.gz from install of MariaDB-server-5.5.25-1.i386 conflicts with file from package MySQL-server-5.5.24-1.cp.1132.x86_64 file /usr/share/man/man1/my_print_defaults.1.gz from install of MariaDB-server-5.5.25-1.i386 conflicts with file from package MySQL-server-5.5.24-1.cp.1132.x86_64 file /usr/share/man/man1/myisam_ftdump.1.gz from install of MariaDB-server-5.5.25-1.i386 conflicts with file from package MySQL-server-5.5.24-1.cp.1132.x86_64 file /usr/share/man/man1/myisamchk.1.gz from install of MariaDB-server-5.5.25-1.i386 conflicts with file from package MySQL-server-5.5.24-1.cp.1132.x86_64 file /usr/share/man/man1/myisamlog.1.gz from install of MariaDB-server-5.5.25-1.i386 conflicts with file from package MySQL-server-5.5.24-1.cp.1132.x86_64 So it appeared that MySQL wasn't removed correctly. I've read from different tutorials given on different sites that to install MariaDB, you had to uninstall/remove MySQL and there weren't any commands given on how to do this. Does anyone know how to "safely" remove MySQL on a WHM/cPanel server so that I can install MariaDB? Here's my repo file in case anyone needs to know... # MariaDB repository list - created 2012-07-10 17:09 UTC # http://downloads.mariadb.org/mariadb/repositories/ [mariadb] name = MariaDB baseurl = http://yum.mariadb.org/5.5/centos5-x86 gpgcheck=1

  • Tab autocomplete in terminal is not behaving properly

    - by CaptSaltyJack
There's something odd about my autocomplete in the gnome terminal. I used to be able to type cp Downtab to get cp Downloads/, and then type Jettab to end up with cp Downloads/Jet\ Pack\ Instructions.pdf But now, when I have cp Down typed and hit tab, I get cp Downloads with a space afterwards. And if I backspace that and make it say cp Downloads/Jet and hit tab, I get cp Downloads/Jet Pack Instructions.pdf without the backslashes. It wasn't like this before. How do I fix this? EDIT: There's a problem with my /etc/bash_completion file, it seems. Just not sure what.

  • Copying a large directory tree locally? cp or rsync?

    - by Rory
I have to copy a large directory tree, about 1.8 TB. It's all local. Out of habit I'd use rsync, however I wonder if there's much point, and if I should rather use cp. I'm worried about permissions and uid/gid, since they have to be preserved in the clopy (I know rsync does this). As well as thinks like symlinks. The destination is empty, so I don't have to worry about conditionally updating some files. It's all local disk access, so I don't have to worry about ssh or network. The reason I'd be tempted away from rsync, is because rsync might do more than I need. rsync checksums files. I don't need that, and am concerned that it might take longer than cp. So what do you reckon, rsync or cp?

  • The Business of Winning Innovation: An Exclusive Blog Series

    - by Kerrie Foy
"The Business of Winning Innovation” is a series of articles authored by Oracle Agile PLM experts on what it takes to make innovation a successful and lucrative competitive advantage. Our customers have proven Agile PLM applications to be enormously flexible and comprehensive, so we’ve launched this article series to showcase some of the most fascinating, value-packed use cases. In this article by Keith Colonna, we kick-off the series by taking a look at the science side of innovation within the Consumer Products industry and how PLM can help companies innovate faster, cheaper, smarter. This article will review how innovation has become the lifeline for growth within consumer products companies and how certain companies are “winning” by creating a competitive advantage for themselves by taking a more enterprise-wide,systematic approach to “innovation”.   Managing the Science of Innovation within the Consumer Products Industry By: Keith Colonna, Value Chain Solution Manager, Oracle The consumer products (CP) industry is very mature and competitive. Most companies within this industry have saturated North America (NA) with their products thus maximizing their NA growth potential. Future growth is expected to come from either expansion outside of North America and/or by way of new ideas and products. Innovation plays an integral role in both of these strategies, whether you’re innovating business processes or the products themselves, and may cause several challenges for the typical CP company, Becoming more innovative is both an art and a science. Most CP companies are very good at the art of coming up with new innovative ideas, but many struggle with perfecting the science aspect that involves the best practice processes that help companies quickly turn ideas into sellable products and services. Symptoms and Causes of Business Pain Struggles associated with the science of innovation show up in a variety of ways, like: · Establishing and storing innovative product ideas and data · Funneling these ideas to the chosen few · Time to market cycle time and on-time launch rates · Success rates, or how often the best idea gets chosen · Imperfect decision making (i.e. the ability to kill projects that are not projected to be winners) · Achieving financial goals · Return on R&D investment · Communicating internally and externally as more outsource partners are added globally · Knowing your new product pipeline and project status These challenges (and others) can be consolidated into three root causes: A lack of visibility Poor data with limited access The inability to truly collaborate enterprise-wide throughout your extended value chain Choose the Right Remedy Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions are uniquely designed to help companies solve these types challenges and their root causes. However, PLM solutions can vary widely in terms of configurability, functionality, time-to-value, etc. Business leaders should evaluate PLM solution in terms of their own business drivers and long-term vision to determine the right fit. Many of these solutions are point solutions that can help you cure only one or two business pains in the short term. Others have been designed to serve other industries with different needs. Then there are those solutions that demo well but are owned by companies that are either unable or unwilling to continuously improve their solution to stay abreast of the ever changing needs of the CP industry to grow through innovation. What the Right PLM Solution Should Do for You Based on more than twenty years working in the CP industry, I recommend investing in a single solution that can help you solve all of the issues associated with the science of innovation in a totally integrated fashion. By integration I mean the (1) integration of the all of the processes associated with the development, maintenance and delivery of your product data, and (2) the integration, or harmonization of this product data with other downstream sources, like ERP, product catalogues and the GS1 Global Data Synchronization Network (or GDSN, which is now a CP industry requirement for doing business with most retailers). The right PLM solution should help you: Increase Revenue. A best practice PLM solution should help a company grow its revenues by consolidating product development cycle-time and helping companies get new and improved products to market sooner. PLM should also eliminate many of the root causes for a product being returned, refused and/or reclaimed (which takes away from top-line growth) by creating an enterprise-wide, collaborative, workflow-driven environment. Reduce Costs. A strong PLM solution should help shave many unnecessary costs that companies typically take for granted. Rationalizing SKU’s, components (ingredients and packaging) and suppliers is a major opportunity at most companies that PLM should help address. A natural outcome of this rationalization is lower direct material spend and a reduction of inventory. Another cost cutting opportunity comes with PLM when it helps companies avoid certain costs associated with process inefficiencies that lead to scrap, rework, excess and obsolete inventory, poor end of life administration, higher cost of quality and regulatory and increased expediting. Mitigate Risk. Risks are the hardest to quantify but can be the most costly to a company. Food safety, recalls, line shutdowns, customer dissatisfaction and, worst of all, the potential tarnishing of your brands are a few of the debilitating risks that CP companies deal with on a daily basis. These risks are so uniquely severe that they require an enterprise PLM solution specifically designed for the CP industry that safeguards product information and processes while still allowing the art of innovation to flourish. Many CP companies have already created a winning advantage by leveraging a single, best practice PLM solution to establish an enterprise-wide, systematic approach to innovation. Oracle’s Answer for the Consumer Products Industry Oracle is dedicated to solving the growth and innovation challenges facing the CP industry. Oracle’s Agile Product Lifecycle Management for Process solution was originally developed with and for CP companies and is driven by a specialized development staff solely focused on maintaining and continuously improving the solution per the latest industry requirements. Agile PLM for Process helps CP companies handle all of the processes associated with managing the science of the innovation process, including: specification management, new product development/project and portfolio management, formulation optimization, supplier management, and quality and regulatory compliance to name a few. And as I mentioned earlier, integration is absolutely critical. Many Oracle CP customers, both with Oracle ERP systems and non-Oracle ERP systems, report benefits from Oracle’s Agile PLM for Process. In future articles we will explain in greater detail how both existing Oracle customers (like Gallo, Smuckers, Land-O-Lakes and Starbucks) and new Oracle customers (like ConAgra, Tyson, McDonalds and Heinz) have all realized the benefits of Agile PLM for Process and its integration to their ERP systems. More to Come Stay tuned for more articles in our blog series “The Business of Winning Innovation.” While we will also feature articles focused on other industries, look forward to more on how Agile PLM for Process addresses innovation challenges facing the CP industry. Additional topics include: Innovation Data Management (IDM), New Product Development (NPD), Product Quality Management (PQM), Menu Management,Private Label Management, and more! . • Cannot Start Nginx Compiled from Source

    - by Jason Alan Kennedy
I am trying to compile Nginx from source based on the original compiled Nginx server running on my DigitalOcean server ( Ubuntu-14.04 64x ) but with a few extra modules. I can get everything installed smoothly but I can not get it to start. I am sure the ini is correct because I copied the original source off the current running Nginx server [ Even though I see that Nginx now adds the ini when compiling fron source ]. Below is the [ lengthy process ] that I am performing - add sorry but I wanted to be thorough for those who are in need of the info ]. Because I am a newB to Nginx, I am sure I am missing something or just have it all wrong. If you may look over what I have done and see if you spot anything I need/need to change, I will greatly appreciate it. Thnx! With the original Nginx server still running: I check the current/running Nginx configuration so I can build the new Nginx instance the same but with the added modules: nginx -V # The out-put: configure arguments: --with-cc-opt='-g -O2 -fstack-protector --param=ssp-buffer-size=4 -Wformat -Werror=format-security -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2' --with-ld-opt='-Wl,-Bsymbolic-functions -Wl,-z,relro' --prefix=/usr/share/nginx --conf-path=/etc/nginx/nginx.conf --http-log-path=/var/log/nginx/access.log --error-log-path=/var/log/nginx/error.log --lock-path=/var/lock/nginx.lock --pid-path=/run/nginx.pid --http-client-body-temp-path=/var/lib/nginx/body --http-fastcgi-temp-path=/var/lib/nginx/fastcgi --http-proxy-temp-path=/var/lib/nginx/proxy --http-scgi-temp-path=/var/lib/nginx/scgi --http-uwsgi-temp-path=/var/lib/nginx/uwsgi --with-debug --with-pcre-jit --with-ipv6 --with-http_ssl_module --with-http_stub_status_module --with-http_realip_module --with-http_addition_module --with-http_dav_module --with-http_geoip_module --with-http_gzip_static_module --with-http_image_filter_module --with-http_spdy_module --with-http_sub_module --with-http_xslt_module NOTE: The configure arguments below return errors during 'make' so I removed them. And now to start the server: service nginx start And this is where s#!+ hits the fan - Nada. I check to see if Nginx is running with service --status-all and its not. Also with nginx -V and its not installed??? I reboot the system too and still nothing. So I am not sure what is wrong here. The ini was copied over from the old server along with all the other config files after deleting the old files. When I opened the new compiled files, the nginx default data was present so I replaced them with my old original data prior to starting the new server for the first time. Also to be safe, I rm /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/default and symlinked with ln -s /etc/nginx/sites-available/default /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/default with no errors and I verified that the data was in the sites-enabled/default file. I don't think the server really/fully installed because of the nginx -V result: The program 'nginx' can be found in the following packages: * nginx-core * nginx-extras * nginx-full * nginx-light * nginx-naxsi Try: apt-get install <selected package> Do/should I apt-get install nginx-1.7.4 ?? Or what package do I use being that its a custom package and make install earlier did nothing?? If you need to see the conf files I copied over from the old to the custom server, LMK and I'll post them. Again your help here would be appreciated!

  • Why is my rsync so slow compared to pure cp or even scp?

    - by nfm
I'm transfering the files from Linux to Windows 7 via a mounted share (the share is mounted from Windows on Linux).. I'm copying lots of data (i.e. nearly a TB) from the old to the new machine within my LAN. I'm unfortunate enough already that I only have 100MBit. Naturally I blindly used rsync but already wondered after a day why it feels so slow. Enabling the progress meter showed my a transfer rate of about 2MBit/s . So I took a reasonable big file (800MB) and tracked the transfer timing: cp : 05:33 scp (*): 06:33 rsync : 21:51 *) scp via localhost to the same Linux machine directly onto the share; completely useless but provided a progress meter The tests were as simple as (cp|scp|rsync) <source> <destination> No special arguments except host/port for scp. I even tried the -W switch for rsync but cancelled after ten minutes. rsync is 3.0.3 running on Lenny. To be able to interrupt the copy process anytime and resume lead me to rsync, but now I think I seriously need to reconsider this requirement. How's such a big difference possible?

  • Outer class jframe is not hiding when calling the inner class jframe

    When i am calling the inner jframe, it is called, but outer jframe is not hiding. instead it gets overlapped. so what will be the solution for this. Is there any way to get out of this. As i tried when i am calling the inner class frame, the outer class frame is also called, and it is not hidden. package com.exp.example; import java.awt.Color; import java.awt.Container; import java.awt.event.ActionEvent; import java.awt.event.ActionListener; import javax.swing.JButton; import javax.swing.JFrame; import javax.swing.JLabel; import javax.swing.JTextField; @SuppressWarnings("serial") public class A extends JFrame implements ActionListener { JFrame rframe = new JFrame(); JLabel CFirstName; JTextField Cfname; JButton jbsubmit; Container cp; public A() { rframe.setSize(500, 200); rframe.setLocationRelativeTo(null); cp = getContentPane(); cp.setLayout(null); setSize(550, 300); rframe.setTitle("Outer Frame"); cp.setBackground(new Color(140, 180, 180)); CFirstName = new JLabel("First Name"); Cfname = new JTextField(10); jbsubmit = new JButton("PREVIEW"); CFirstName.setBounds(10, 20, 100, 35); Cfname.setBounds(150, 20, 150, 25); jbsubmit.setBounds(190, 110, 92, 25); cp.add(CFirstName); cp.add(Cfname); cp.add(jbsubmit); jbsubmit.addActionListener(this); rframe.add(cp); rframe.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); rframe.setVisible(true); } public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent ae) { String action = ae.getActionCommand(); if (action == "PREVIEW") { /* Write the code here * When we click on preview button the frame of outer class(class A) gets * deactivated(closed) and inner frame, frame of inner class(class B) gets visible. * it should not be overlapped. */ /* My Code */ new B(); rframe.setVisible(false); } } public class B { JFrame frm = new JFrame(); Container cp; public B() { frm.setSize(500, 200); frm.setLocationRelativeTo(null); cp = getContentPane(); cp.setLayout(null); setSize(550, 300); frm.setTitle("Inner Frame"); cp.setBackground(new Color(140, 180, 180)); JLabel cpn = new JLabel("hello"); cpn.setBounds(10, 20, 100, 35); cp.add(cpn); frm.add(cp); frm.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); frm.setVisible(true); } } public static void main(String[] args) { new A(); } }

  • How do I get rid of the Cisco CP one-time user message on a Cisco 2901 router?

    - by user65712
I get this message on a new 2901 Cisco router: Cisco Configuration Professional (Cisco CP) is installed on this device and it provides the default username "cisco" for one-time use. If you have already used the username "cisco" to login to the router and your IOS image supports the "one-time" user option, then this username has already expired. You will not be able to login to the router with this username after you exit this session. It is strongly suggested that you create a new username with a privilege level of 15 using the following command. username <myuser> privilege 15 secret 0 <mypassword> Replace and with the username and password you want to use. It appears every time I login and everytime I show run. I already set up my username. How do I turn it off?

  • What's faster, cp -R or unpacking tar.gz files?

    - by Buttle Butkus
I have some tar.gz files that total many gigabytes on a CentOS system. Most of the tar.gz files are actually pretty small, but the ones with images are large. One is 7.7G, another is about 4G, and a couple around 1G. I have unpacked the files once already and now I want a second copy of all those files. I assumed that copying the unpacked files would be faster than re-unpacking them. But I started running cp -R about 10 minutes ago and so far less than 500M is copied. I feel certain that the unpacking process was faster. Am I right? And if so, why? It doesn't seem to make sense that unpacking would be faster than simply duplicating existing structures.

  • bash copy with variable

    - by zaf
I'm trying to copy files to the current directory using a bash script. In order to handle paths that need escaping a variable is used that is escaped and then supplied to the cp command. The cp command is complaining with: usage: cp [-R [-H | -L | -P]] [-fi | -n] [-apvX] source_file target_file cp [-R [-H | -L | -P]] [-fi | -n] [-apvX] source_file ... target_directory I know what that means but I cannot understand why that happens. Here is the code: z="/a/b/c d e f.txt" y=`printf %q "$z"` cp $y x.txt # not working as expected echo cp $y x.txt # output is "cp /a/b/c\ d\ e\ f.txt x.txt"

  • what does AngleVectors method in quake 3 source code does

    - by kypronite
    I just downloaded quake 3 for learning purposes. I know some of some linear algebra(basic vector math ie: dot,cross product). However I can't decipher what below method does, I know what is yaw,pitch and roll. But I can't connect these with vector. Worse, I'm not sure this fall under what math 'category', so I don't really know how to google. Hence the question here. Anyone? void AngleVectors( const vec3_t angles, vec3_t forward, vec3_t right, vec3_t up) { float angle; static float sr, sp, sy, cr, cp, cy; // static to help MS compiler fp bugs angle = angles[YAW] * (M_PI*2 / 360); sy = sin(angle); cy = cos(angle); angle = angles[PITCH] * (M_PI*2 / 360); sp = sin(angle); cp = cos(angle); angle = angles[ROLL] * (M_PI*2 / 360); sr = sin(angle); cr = cos(angle); if (forward) { forward[0] = cp*cy; forward[1] = cp*sy; forward[2] = -sp; } if (right) { right[0] = (-1*sr*sp*cy+-1*cr*-sy); right[1] = (-1*sr*sp*sy+-1*cr*cy); right[2] = -1*sr*cp; } if (up) { up[0] = (cr*sp*cy+-sr*-sy); up[1] = (cr*sp*sy+-sr*cy); up[2] = cr*cp; } } ddddd

  • Postgresql base backup script

    - by Terry Lorber
I'm using the following script to do a file-level backup of Postgresql. I sometimes see that the last part, to do cleanup after "pgs_backup_stop" is called, hangs while it waits for the last WAL to be created. The REF_FILE to search for is sometimes wrong. I'm also shipping these files to a different machine, every 5 minutes via rsync. What do other people do to safely remove old WAL files? #!/bin/bash PGDATA=/usr/local/pgsql/data WAL_ARCHIVE=/usr/local/pgsql/archives PGBACKUP=/usr/local/pgsqlbackup PSQL=/usr/local/pgsql/bin/psql today=`date +%Y%m%d-%H%M%S` label=base_backup_${today} echo "Executing pg_start_backup with label $label in server ... • CSharpCodeProvider 'cannot find metadata file' Compiling Plugin Code With Mono

    - by Jason Champion
I have some code in an XML file that I load and compile at runtime in an application. This works fine on Windows, but under Mono I get assembly reference errors. Here's the examine code in question: public static bool CompileSpell(Spell spell) { CSharpCodeProvider prov = new CSharpCodeProvider(); CompilerParameters cp = new CompilerParameters(); cp.GenerateExecutable = true; cp.GenerateInMemory = true; cp.ReferencedAssemblies.Add("system.dll"); cp.ReferencedAssemblies.Add("system.xml.dll"); cp.ReferencedAssemblies.Add("BasternaeMud.dll"); cp.ReferencedAssemblies.Add("ZoneData.dll"); Log.Trace("Compiling spell '" + spell.Name + "'."); StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder(); int idx = spell.FileName.IndexOf('.'); string file = spell.FileName; if (idx > 0) { file = spell.FileName.Substring(0, idx); } int lines = GenerateWithMain(sb, spell.Code, "BasternaeMud"); CompilerResults cr = prov.CompileAssemblyFromSource(cp,sb.ToString()); .... The specific errors I get in the compiler results are: cannot find metadata file 'system.dll' at line 0 column 0. cannot find metadata file 'system.xml.dll' at line 0 column 0. Mono obviously doesn't like the way I add referenced assemblies to the code I'm compiling for system.xml and system.xml.dll. The other two assemblies add fine, which is no surprise because they're the code that the compiler is actually executing from and exist in the executable directory. Any clue what I need to do to fix this? Maybe I could just drop those DLLs in the executable directory, but that feels like a dumb idea.

  • How do I correct a directory incorrectly copied into itself?

    - by Peter Boughton
Given the following situation... <path>/mydir1/mydir2 ...where mydir2 should have overwritten mydir1, but was instead placed inside, and both directories actually have the same filename. How is that fixed? Attempting to do mv <path>/mydir/mydir/* <path>/mydir/ or mv <path>/mydir <path>/ results in: mv: cannot move `<path>/mydir/mydir` to a subdirectory of itself, `<path>/mydir` This seems stupidly simple, but it's late here and I can't figure it out. There are seventeen such directories to fix (path differs for each, but same mydir name). To confirm, the error message can be caused with this: # cd /path/to/directory # mv mydir/mydir ./ mv: cannot move `mydir/mydir' to a subdirectory of itself, `./mydir' Also tried: # mv mydir/mydir/* mydir/ mv: cannot move `mydir/mydir/otherdir1' to a subdirectory of itself, `mydir/otherdir1' mv: cannot move `mydir/mydir/otherdir2' to a subdirectory of itself, `mydir/otherdir2' and... # mv /path/to/directory/mydir/mydir/otherdir1 /path/to/directory/mydir/ mv: cannot move `/path/to/directory/mydir/mydir/otherdir1' to a subdirectory of itself, `/path/to/directory/mydir/otherdir1' and using a temporary directory: # mv mydir/mydir ./mydir-temp # mv mydir-temp/* mydir/ mv: cannot move `mydir-temp/otherdir1' to a subdirectory of itself, `mydir/otherdir1' mv: cannot move `mydir-temp/otherdir2' to a subdirectory of itself, `mydir/otherdir2' I found a similar question "How to recursively move all files (including hidden) in a subfolder into a parent folder in *nix?" which suggested that mv bar/{,.}* . would do this. But this also gives the same errors, as well as confusingly picking up . and .. from somewhere. # cd mydir # mv mydir/{,.}* . mv: cannot move `mydir/otherdir1' to a subdirectory of itself, `./otherdir1' mv: cannot move `mydir/otherdir2' to a subdirectory of itself, `./otherdir2' mv: cannot move `mydir/.' to `./.': Device or resource busy mv: cannot move `mydir/..' to `./..': Device or resource busy mv: overwrite `./.file'? y Another similar question "linux mv command weirdness" suggests that mv doesn't overwrite and a copy is required. # cd mydir # cp -rf ./mydir/* ./ cp: overwrite `./otherdir1/file1'? y cp: overwrite `./otherdir1/file2'? y cp: overwrite `./otherdir1/file3'? This appears to be working... except there's a lot of files (and dirs) - I don't want to confirm every one! Isn't the f there supposed to prevent this? Ok, so cp was aliased to cp -i (which I found out with type cp), and bypassed by using \cp -rf ./mydir/* ./ which seems to have worked. Although I've solved the problem of getting dirs/files from one place to another, I'm still curious as to what's going on with the mv stuff - is this really a deliberate feature as suggested by Warner?

  • Making Thunar the default file browser without hiding the desktop icons

    - by Manu
I really dislike Ubuntu's default file browser, nautilus, and decided to opt for a lighter alternative (Thunar or Xfe). I've used the following script to change the default to Thunar, but now all my icons are gone from the desktop ! The files are still there, in /home/myid/Desktop, but they do not appear. This seems similar: EXT4 "No space left on device (28)" incorrect but there is no explanation I created an ext4 filesystem on a RAID 1 array with: mke2fs -t ext4 -T small /dev/md0 Copying a single directory with many tiny files I get: cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/raid1_new/pics/pic3412.jpg': No space left on device space used 5% inodes used 1% I manually tried: cp /source/test1.jpg /mnt/raid1_new/pics/test1.jpg --- error cp /source/test1.jpg /mnt/raid1_new/pics/test2.jpg --- ERROR cp /source/test1.jpg /mnt/raid1_new/pics/test3.jpg --- no error Notes: RAID 1 disks are error free. I tried mv instead of cp and got the same thing. I tried omitting -T small with no effect Can somebody help me understand this magic?

  • Why is the Clojure Hello World program so slow compared to Java and Python?

    - by viksit
Hi all, I'm reading "Programming Clojure" and I was comparing some languages I use for some simple code. I noticed that the clojure implementations were the slowest in each case. For instance, Python - hello.py def hello_world(name): print "Hello, %s" % name hello_world("world") and result, $ time python hello.py Hello, world real 0m0.027s user 0m0.013s sys 0m0.014s Java - hello.java import java.io.*; public class hello { public static void hello_world(String name) { System.out.println("Hello, " + name); } public static void main(String[] args) { hello_world("world"); } } and result, $ time java hello Hello, world real 0m0.324s user 0m0.296s sys 0m0.065s and finally, Clojure - hellofun.clj (defn hello-world [username] (println (format "Hello, %s" username))) (hello-world "world") and results, $ time clj hellofun.clj Hello, world real 0m1.418s user 0m1.649s sys 0m0.154s Thats a whole, garangutan 1.4 seconds! Does anyone have pointers on what the cause of this could be? Is Clojure really that slow, or are there JVM tricks et al that need to be used in order to speed up execution? More importantly - isn't this huge difference in performance going to be an issue at some point? (I mean, lets say I was using Clojure for a production system - the gain I get in using lisp seems completely offset by the performance issues I can see here). The machine used here is a 2007 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard, a 2.16Ghz Intel C2D and 2G DDR2 SDRAM. BTW, the clj script I'm using is from here and looks like, #!/bin/bash JAVA=/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6/Home/bin/java CLJ_DIR=/opt/jars CLOJURE=$CLJ_DIR/clojure.jar CONTRIB=$CLJ_DIR/clojure-contrib.jar JLINE=$CLJ_DIR/jline-0.9.94.jar CP=$PWD:$CLOJURE:$JLINE:$CONTRIB # Add extra jars as specified by `.clojure` file if [ -f .clojure ] then CP=$CP:`cat .clojure` fi if [ -z "$1" ]; then $JAVA -server -cp $CP \ jline.ConsoleRunner clojure.lang.Repl else scriptname=$1 $JAVA -server -cp $CP clojure.main $scriptname -- $* fi

  • Cappuccino plist structure

    - by PurplePilot
The question is does anyone know what the structure of the (type-2) plist files in Cappuccino are? In Cappuccino there is a lot of use made of plist files. Some such as info.plist (type-1) follow a recognizable structure. These are fine i can inderstand them. <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>CPApplicationDelegateClass</key> <string>DocumentController</string> <key>CPBundleDocumentTypes</key> <array> <dict> ..... etc However others (type-2) which are used for importing data, importing the pptx files to and from the slides application and i believe in Atlas the development tool do not. They have a structure like this 280NPLIST;1.0;D;K;4;$topD;K;23;DocumentPresentationKeyD;K;6;CP$UIDd;1;1E;E;K;8;$objectsA;S;5;$nullD;K;6;$classD;K;6;CP$UIDd;1;2E;K;23;SKPresentationSlideSizeD;K;6;CP$UIDd;1;3E;K;23;SKPresentationNotesSizeD;K;6;CP$UIDd;1;4E;K;20;SKPresentationSlidesD;K;6;CP$UIDd;1;5E;K;26;SKPresentationSlideMastersD;K;6;CP$UIDd;1;7E;K;19;SKPresentationThemeD;K;6;CP$UIDd;1;8E;E;D;K;10;$classnameS;14; Which appears to come on a single line regardless of size (i had one today with in excess of 1.3 million chars. I suspect i have just asked a Tumbleweed badge question her but as i already have one it doesn't matter.
