• I finished my #TechEd 2010, may I have another??

  It has been another fantastic year for TechEd North America.  I always love my time here.  First, I have to give a huge thank you to Ineta for giving me the opportunity to work the Ineta booth and BOF’s (birds of a feather).   I can not even begin to list how many fantastic leaders in the .Net space and Developers from all over I have met through Ineta at this event.  It has been truly amazing and great fun!! New Orlean’s has been awesome.  The night life is hoppin’.  In addition to enjoying a few (too many??) of the local hurricanes in New Orleans, I have hung out with some of the coolest people  Deepesh Mohnani, David Poll, Viresh, Alan Stephens, Shawn Wildermuth, Greg Leonardo, Doug Seven, Chris Willams, David Carley and some of our southcentral hero’s Jeffery Palermo, Todd Anglin, Shawn Weisfeld, Randy Walker, The midnight DBA’s, Zeeshan Hirani, Dennis Bottjer just to name a few. A big thanks to Microsoft and everyone that has helped to put TechEd together.  I have loved hanging out with people from the Silverlight and Expression Teams and have learned a ton.  I am ramped up and ready to take all that knowledge back to my co-workers and my community. I can not wait to see you all again next year in Atlanta!!! • Coordinates from 3DS Max to XNA 3.5

  Hello My problem is this. I have a simple box made in 3DS Max 2009, the Box is 10x10x10. I've tried to load it on XNA and traslate the camera for 15 units, but I can seem to find the values needed to see the box properly. Can anyone point me to a good resource where I can find some good introduction to XNA coordinate system and how is a simple box made in 3DS Max imported properly Best regards, David

• Google Drive stripped Outlook 2010 of all emails, contacts, etc

  I have a business that requires I use the business email: [email protected] I loaded Google Drive as a free cloud to share project details with co-worker. Side effect is that Outlook 2010 does not work now. All incoming emails are now transferred to my personal Google account. Now I can not send business emails inclusive of business headers and footers since Outlook is erroring on send/receive. And all my history of email organization on Outlook is gone. I was previously successfully syncing outlook through Google calendar to keep my blackberry sync'd Your help is appreciated - thank you. David

• Beginner question - Loop invariants (Specifically Ch.3 of "Accelerated C++")

  Hi - as I said, a complete beginner question here. I'm currently working my way through "Accelerated C++" and just came across this in chapter 3: // invariant: // we have read count grades so far, and // sum is the sum of the first count grades while (cin >> x) { ++count; sum += x; } The authors follow this by explaining that the invariant needs special attention paid to it because when the input is read into the variable x, we will have read count+1 grades and thus the invariant will be untrue. Similarly, when we have incremented the counter, the variable sum will no longer be the sum of the last count grades (in case you hadn't guessed, it's the traditional program for calculating student marks). What I don't understand is why this matters. Surely for just about any other loop, a similar statement would be true? For example, here is the book's first while loop (the output is filled in later): // invariant: we have written r rows so far while (r != rows) { // write a row of output std::cout << std::endl; ++r; } Once we have written the appropriate row of output, surely the invariant is false until we have incremented r, just as in the other example? It's probably something really obvious, anyone could enlighten me as to what makes these two cases different, that'd be great - and thanks in advance for taking the time to answer such a complete novice question.   Possible Duplicate: How do I point a new domain to start on a page that's not index.html on separate hosting? I'm using a service called SquareSpace to host my site, and today I'm registering the domain for it. Basically, how do I make it so when somebody types www.tedxoxford.com it points at http://www.tedxoxford.com/landing (currently http://tedxoxford.squarespace.com/landing) instead of the default index? Is this possible? Squarespace is quite a restricted CMS and means that your logos etc all point to the index so I don't want people ending up on my landing/splash page every time they want the home page, only on the first time they type in the URL. A dirty hack would be to check the refferer and redirect anyone hitting the index to the landing page, but that's a lot of loading overhead I'd rather avoid...

• Provisioning Videos

  There are a couple of new videos up on the Oracle Learning Youtube channel about Ops Center's provisioning capabilities. Simon Hayler does a walkthrough of a couple of different procedures. The first video shows you how to provision Oracle Solaris zones. It explains how to create an Oracle Solaris Zone profile, and then how to apply it (using a deployment plan) to a target system. The second video shows you how to provision an x86 server with Oracle Solaris. This uses a very similar process - you create a OS provisioning profile, then use a deployment plan to apply it to the target hardware. The documentation goes over OS provisioning and zone creation in the Feature Guide, if you're looking for additional information.

• Migrating an LDOM from a T4 to a T5

  I got a question about LDoms: "Is there any restriction against migrating LDoms between the T4 and T5 platforms?" The only restriction is that, at present, you can't do a live migration. However, with Ops Center 12.1.4, you can put T4 and T5s together in a Server Pool and either manually migrate the LDoms to a new host or configure them for automated cold-migration failover. Take a look at the Server Pool and Oracle VM Server for SPARC chapters for more information.

• Workflow: Operate Zones

  The Operate Zones workflow is another of the workflow documents that we introduced recently. It follows naturally after the Deploy Oracle Solaris 11 Zones workflow that I talked about last week, so I thought I'd talk about it next. This workflow is less linear than the zone deployment workflow. It's built around this image: The left side shows you the prerequisites for zone operation: you have to deploy libraries and deploy either Oracle Solaris 10 or 11 zones - whichever type you want to manage using this workflow. Once you have the zones deployed, you can begin to operate them. If you want to associate resources with the global zone, the workflow directs you to the Exploring Your Server Pools how-to, which talks about adding global zones to server pools and associating libraries and network resources with them. Otherwise, it directs you to a set of how-tos about zone management: Managing the Configuration of a Zone, which explains how to add storage, edit zone attributes, and connect zones to networks; Lifecycle Management of Zones, which explains how to halt, shut down, boot, reboot, or delete a zone; and Migrating Zones, which explains how to move a zone to a new global zone in the same server pool. Finally, it directs you to the Update Oracle Solaris workflow when you want to update your zones, and to the Monitor and Manage Incidents workflow to learn more about monitoring your assets.

• How To: Use Monitoring Rules and Policies

  One of Ops Center's most useful features is its asset monitoring capability. When you discover an asset - an operating system, say, or a server - a default monitoring policy is applied to it, based on the asset type. This policy contains rules that specify what properties are monitored and what thresholds are considered significant. Ops Center will send a notification if a monitored asset passes one of the specified thresholds. But sometimes you want different assets to be monitored in different ways. For example, you might have a group of mission-critical systems, for which you want to be notified immediately if their file system usage rises above a specific threshold. You can do so by creating a new monitoring policy and applying it to the group. You can also apply monitoring policies to individual assets, and edit them to meet the requirements of your environment. • Agent versus Agentless management

  I got a couple of questions about Agentless asset management: "What does agentless management do for an asset?" Agentless management is one of the two ways that you can manage an operating system. Rather than installing an Agent Controller on the OS, agentless management uses SSH to regularly check the system and gather monitoring data. Many of the actions that would be available on an agent-managed system are available on an agentless system, but actions such as running reports or updating an Oracle Solaris 10 or Linux OS are not available. A table showing the capabilities of agentless management is here. "What permissions does agentless management require?" Agentless management still requires root credentials. If you can't log into the system as root, you can provide one set of credentials for the login, and then a set of root credentials to switch to.

• 3 language website using subdomains and mapped domains. Add subdomains or mapped domains to WMT?

  I have a new wordpress multisite setup. Main language Italian and 2 subdomains using en and de for english and german. There is no auto translation plugins being used. The wordpress theme being used is by Studiopress.com and have SEO built in. I am a little confused as which domains to use in Webmasters Tools. If I use the subdomains (en and de) which have the seo setup, then google will index and show the en.example.it wont know about the mapped domains or display them. If I use the mapped domains then won't google not see the seo for the subdomains. I am muddled with this. What do??

• Ops Center zip documentation

  If you're operating in a dark site, or are otherwise without easy access to the internet, it can be tricky to get access to the docs. The readme comes along with the product, but that's not exactly the same as the whole doc library. Well, we've put a zip file with the whole doc library contents up on the main doc page. So, if you are in a site without internet access, you can get the zip, extract it, and have a portable version of the site, including the pdf and html versions of all of the docs.

• Using Asset Groups

  I got a question about putting assets in groups: "I'm planning on installing some agents manually on existing systems, and I want to have them put in a specific asset group once they're discovered. I don't see any way to tell the install script to put the asset in a group. How can I add the assets to a group, either through the UI or the CLI?" There are a few ways. In the CLI, you can use groups mode, and use this command to add an asset to a group: attach -n| --gear <asset name> -g| --group <group> You can also use -U| --uuid <UUID> to specify the asset if you have multiple assets with the same name. In the UI, you have a couple of options. You can select an asset and click Add Asset to Group to add it to a group you select. Alternatively, if you're trying to make a group for assets with a specific characteristic, you can specify rules that will automatically add assets to a group based on that characteristic.

OS Analytics gives you a huge amount of information about the characteristics of managed operating systems and lets you track changes to these characteristics over time. • Is unit testing or test-driven development worthwhile?

  My team at work is moving to Scrum and other teams are starting to do test-driven development using unit tests and user acceptance tests. I like the UATs, but I'm not sold on unit testing for test-driven development or test-driven development in general. It seems like writing tests is extra work, gives people a crutch when they write the real code, and might not be effective very often. I understand how unit tests work and how to write them, but can anyone make the case that it's really a good idea and worth the effort and time? Also, is there anything that makes TDD especially good for Scrum?

  If you're interested in making effective use of virtualization tools like Oracle VM Server, there's a whitepaper on oracle.com that you should check out. The whitepaper starts with a few specific technologies and hardware: Oracle VM Server for SPARC, T4 Servers, Ops Center, Solaris 11, Sun Network 10GbE Switches, and Sun ZFS Storage Appliances. It then explains how to use them to plan and set up a virtualized environment, in which guests are grouped in Server Pools with high availability and are managed through Ops Center. It explains how Ops Center simplifies the management of logical domains by using custom plans to create new logical domains and managing their life cycle through its user interface. So, if you're interested in setting up a cloud and you want to avoid surprises along the way, have a look.
