    Hi I am unable to connect to the internet. ,Just installed the OS XP Pro and the device manager has a yellow question mark for controller driver, PCI bus. My network connection shows I am connected to a firewalled network with zero packets sent and received. I checked HP.COM, with no luck. Please advise what I should do. thank you very much

  • Two network cards in one Windows 7 PC

    Hi, I've upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. On Vista I used to run one network card (Intel 82566DC -2 Gigabit) for my internet which was connected to a Dovado USB mobile broadband router connected to a 3G modem. The IP setup on the card is set on DHCP. The second card (3com Ethernet link) was used to connect to our town's local WUG (wireless user group) and all worked fine. Now the problem I have with Windows 7 is that when I connect to the internet with the (Intel) first card, the internet work fine but as soon as I connect the second card to the wug my internet drops. If I then disconnect the first card (internet one) and try to connect to the wug it works. It seems that the two cards are fighting each other. Is there maybe something I can do to fix the problem? As you probably can gather from this post is that I am not an expert on PC's so please if you do answer do I in simple terms. :) Thanks, Martin

  • Cookies blocked by router?

    Hello, My friend has a D-Link DI-524 router that she uses for her home broadband. It's a pretty vanilla setup with the standard firewall settings, DHCP enabled etc. However, recently she has experienced something strange - cookies are not working on every computer on her LAN, whether using FF3.5 or IE8. I tried viewing the HTTP traffic using Fiddler2, and the requests come through fine (mind you, Internet browsing still works flawlessly) but whenever a website tries to set a cookie using the "Set-Cookie:" header, my computer sees that line as "Set-*ookie:" with the cookie contents removed. I have never seen anything like this - do you have any idea? Regards, Martin

  • How to use router QoS?

    N00b question. How exactly does one use router quality of service settings? I've read up on it a bit but I'm still not exactly sure how to use it. So, my real questions are these: Generally, how does QoS work? How would one use it, say, to guarantee smooth performance in latency sensitive application (cough online gaming cough)? Performance for that sort of stuff bombs out on our connection when somebody is uploading files. I apologize if this is kind of sprawling. Suggestions to clean it up / edits welcome.

  • Couple folders went 'access denied' in Windows. Why and how to fix?

    So, after a failed Windows 7 install, I put XP back on, and had a adrenaline shot when I got an access denied on a couple of my backed up folders. I already tried the instructions here at Microsoft KB, but it didn't fix it. I did add myself with full permissions on the main section of the Security tab, though, and that gave me access into the folder (I could do it in XP Home because of the Windows NT SP4 Security Configuration Manager). However, it appears some subfolders are still inaccessible. Two questions, then. Why exactly did this happen and how do I fix it?

  • Is it possible to re-cab an Administrative Install Point?

    We have Acrobat 8 Pro at work, and our media was painfully out of date. Rather than install all of the machines at 8.0.0 and then do the 6 or 7 consecutive reboots adobe expects you to be ok with I decided I'd integrate the .msp files into the installer. I tried the command: cscript "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0\Samples\sysmgmt\msi\scripts\WiMakCab.vbs" AcroPro.msi Data1 /L /C /S Per the guide I was using, while this did produce the cab file I Wanted, however the resulting MSI fails to install with an error 2602: It's been a while since I've done something like this, and it's probably a glaring oversight on my part, but any insight would be much appreciated.

  • Any reason not to disable Windows kernel paging?

    So I'm planning on eventually going to 2 GB (mobo max) RAM from 1 GB, and I want to disable kernel paging once I do, because I've heard it can give a performance boost (and that I believe). Any reason not to do it or any general thoughts about it? Edit: for clarification, this is not disabling general RAM paging. This is disabling having kernel memory paged (or at least parts of it, as Charlls noted).

    Hi All, I'm a newbie developer wanting to learn a bit about Virtualization (from the IT point of view, not theoretical/academic). What I'd like to do: Prepare a machine Install VMWare or VirtualBox Prepare 3 Guest OSes (one for Win2k8 server, 2 for Ubuntu Server) Win2k8 will run SQL Server 2k8 and IIS (for ASP.NET MVC deployment) 1 Ubuntu Server for Drupal, SugarCRM, MediaWiki, typical LAMP stuff 1 Ubuntu Server for Java (Tomcat/Jetty + MySQL/PostgreSQL) What I'd like to know: What would be the ideal Host OS such that the Host OS should not spend too many resources on itself but should boost these instances of VMs (e.g: does Win2k8 performs better vs Linux?) What would be the ideal machine for this (preferably AMD base chip) I'm not expecting the best performance out of this setup, just a decent one to host one drupal instance, one ASP.NET MVC (future, not now), and one Tomcat/Jetty instance. NB: If you have a better suggestions on the setup, feel free to let me know (e.g: maybe Drupal and Tomcat can be in one instance but move the database to another instance instead of 1 instance map to 1 webserver and 1 dbserver).     Hello, I'm puzzled by this email message that gets quarantined by McAfee Secure Messaging Service (it's based on Postini) for no reason that I can think of. Can anyone explain to me why the final score is so low when none of the filters were triggered? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to prevent this from happening? Regards, Martin

  • Installing Java on a Virtual Private Server

    I have recently managed to get my employer to pay for a vps. I teach and asked the vps provider to enable Perl, Python, Ruby, Tomcat and Java. They've done the first four (really quickly) but have got back to me asking which parts of Java I need. I think the Java Virtual Machine is a given but what other S/W do I need to get installed? I think by getting the vps I now have the chance to teach Enterprise Java and want to get into Java Message Server and Enterprise patterns. Can I get Glassfish installed or is that a silly question? What tool or tools can I use to replicate this functionality in Linux? I am okay using two separate apps for the bandwidth and the usage monitoring, but the usage monitoring is a must have.

  • Can't delete a directory on external drive (OS X)

    I have a brand new Transcend StoreJet 25M3 (external HDD) mounted to MacBook (Leopard 10.5.8) at /Volumes/Transcend. I copied some data from my old Windows (XP) machine on it, and now, after cleaning some stuff up, I wanted to delete some directories, but this is what happened: $ rmdir My\ Pictures/ rmdir: My Pictures/: Operation not permitted Using Finder just asks for password, but does not delete the directory (sound of "moved to Trash" is played). I thought it's some permission "thing", but: $ ls -l drwxrwxrwx 1 martin staff 32768 5 jan 16:11 My Pictures/ $ sudo rm -rf My\ Pictures rm: My Pictures: Operation not permitted I re-mounted, rebooted (thinking that there's some file lock), but that did not help. What might have happened here? How to delete it?

  • System says memory controller not available and doesn't boot?

    Hello everybody, Recently I have had a MainBoard-problem. I've send my mainboard to service and today I got it back from the company. It is a Foxconn 520a mainboard. Now I have installed my exchanged mainboard. But now I have a problem. My system boots until the device list with IRQ entries appear. The system says "Verifying DMI-pool-data..." and nothing happens. The IRQ-device list shows that the memory-controller is not available. All other devices have got an IRQ. Bus No. Device No. Func No. Vendor/Device Class Device Class IRQ 0 0 0 10DE 0547 0500 Memory Controller NA Do you have any ideas where the problem could be? I already have disconnected all unnecessary devices like the hard disks. Perhaps it is a BIOS problem, but I don't know where I should look. Would be nice if there is any advice, Greetings, Martin

  • Some notebooks can connect to internet via certain wireless router, some can't

    I take a class in the building of a business and we sometimes use their internet via Wi-Fi. In the last few weeks, though, some notebooks haven't been able to connect to the internet even though they are connected to the router. It affected first a few of us and then all of us. Last week I tweaked around the network settings on the router (yes, the admin password is the same as the network key) and even moved the internet cable on the router from port 1 to the internet port. None of this really worked so I put things more or less back as I found them and alerted someone that someone who knew more than me had better have a look at the router. So, I don't know if anybody has had a look at it but now 2 of us can again connect to the internet. I had a look at the router settings last week and I really couldn't see what might be creating this issue. What might be the problem?

  • Is there a program that compares image files and reports if they are exactly the same pixel-wise?

    I'm making a regression testing suite for some rendering software. I need to be able to load an image file (PNG or TGA, ideally) and compare the pixel values to a standard approved image. I'd like it to be command line driven too, so I can make a batch file to run all the tests. All the compare utilities I have found so far either show differences (I just need it to fail if they are different) or compare all the bytes, meaning that meta-data will trigger a fail. Anyone got any suggestions? I am not a coder, and can only barely cobble a batch script together. Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi there, We are using a client application to print out grade sheets from an online application. This has been working flawlessly until the systems were upgraded to IE 8.   • Iframe always showing scroll bars in IE7

    Hi everyone, Having an annoying issue in IE7. I have a website where, at the bottom of every page theres an Iframe, and for the life of me I cannot get the scroll bars to hide. This is only in IE7, every other browser I have tested is fine. I have scrolling="no" and set overflow:hidden; still not working though.
